This series is focused on Harold Begbie's book Life Changers. Published in 1922 it describes key elements in Frank Buchman's program of radical change from which AA drew so much. Studying the source material for the 12-Steps can give us insights into the transformation process the Group was trying to achieve both in individuals and in nations. These can prove invaluable to anyone whose recovery has lost its “zing” or to individuals unable to recover because of a “watered down” recovery approach. Fr. Bill focuses on chapter two of Begbie's book describing the founder of the Oxford Group as a “soul surgeon”- a man capable of cutting out anything that keeps a person from a full recovery. Joe & Adam are diving back into the Danny Boyle cinematic well — this time with T2 Trainspotting (2017), the long-awaited sequel to the iconic Brit flick. The whole gang is back - Spud, Sick Boy, Renton, and Begbie - and so is Boyle's stylish storytelling. Our hosts break down the film, debate Ewan McGregor's hit-or-miss filmography, and (for once) actually talk about the movie more than usual. Plus, Joe's homegrown Kevin Bacon game makes a triumphant return, alongside the classic Box Office game and the all-important Picking Next Week's Film game. Got a film you forgot you forgot? Hit us up at moviesyouforgotyouforgot@gmail.com with your thoughts, episode suggestions, or just some light praise. The best picks make it onto the sacred Communal List - and who knows, one day, fate (or our deeply flawed selection process) might smile upon yours. You can also follow Adam on Letterboxd; he rates and reviews the films he watches. The comments section is a very cool place to be. Also, be a pal: tell your chums, rate us, review us, shout our name into the void - whatever helps spread the word.

Acting great Robert Carlyle joined Bush to talk all about his new Netflix TV show, Toxic Town. Plus, Bush made sure to ask Robert about some of his most iconic roles... cue Begbie & Trainspotting chat.
Begbie himself, and surely a frontrunner for British cinema's scariest man (on screen only, we might add), is our guest this week—it's Robert Carlyle. This time he's playing staunchly moral councilor Sam Hagen in new Netflix drama ‘Toxic Town'. Penned by Jack Thorne (of course), and with a cracking cast of Jodie Whittaker, Aimee Lou Wood, Rory Kinnear and more alongside Carlyle, it tells the true story of the Corby poisonings. Following the closure of the town's steelworks, mismanagement of toxic waste begins to affect the health of local mothers and their babies—who are dismissed by the council and must fight for justice. Robert unpacks his character, and gives us the screen zinger of the year that had us reaching for the birdsong button... Mark reviews ‘Toxic Town', as well as Indian feelgood flick ‘Superboys of Malegaon'. The Hindi language film follows a gang of amateur filmmakers whose shoestring budget spoofs of their favourite Bollywood hits become a cult phenomenon. Plus, Gia Coppola's ‘The Last Showgirl'--the story of a Las Vegas dancer's fading glamour, starring Pamela Anderson in a critically acclaimed comeback performance. In Episode 66 of For the Record, the opening discussion focuses on a recent economic forum that took place at the Anvil Center. While organizers are applauded for their efforts, a local entrepreneur (who wants to remain anonymous) speaks out about why downtown New West lost out on becoming the regional headquarters for his international business! 45 well paying jobs will be staying in Port Moody after several board of directors paid a visit to Columbia Street. Were we really compared to Prince Albert, SK?A report in the 'consent agenda' of the Feb 10th New West Council meeting outlines how a new illicit drug inhalation center is set to open up in downtown New West. The report was only made public a few days ago and is likely to get the support of a majority of Council when it comes up for a vote of Feb 10th. But with only a few days in the public realm, have local residents been provided with enough time to weigh in on whether they want this latest harm reduction service to be added into their neighbourhood?Queen's Park residents have spoken and many of them are none to happy about the prospect of 'rewilding' or 'naturalizing' both the 5th Street and 2nd Street boulevards. A portion of the 5th Street boulevard has already had the special biodiversity treatment and it's not going over well with local residents who are organizing a 'grassroots' campaign to put a halt to all of this. Yes, pun intended! The latest Councillor Cafe featuring retired architect Michael Geller was a huge success. Just under 100 people attended the event that focused primarily on the proposed Columbia Square redevelopment. If approved, it will jam 7,500 new residents on to a postage stamp lot on the western part of our downtown that is already facing numerous challenges with traffic and transportation. What does a sold out Burger and Beer at Begbie's mean for the future of civic politics in New West? Is the NWP momentum continuing to build in time for the 2026 civic election? It would appear so.Will a motion to approve two new Remembrance Day commemorative crosswalks get the green light from Council on Feb 10th? The discussion focuses on why our veterans deserve this special tribute in 2025.The next NWP event is at the Taverna Greka on April 15th. In this latest episode Coun. Paul Minhas appears as part of the regular Council Roundup feature. A number of topics were on the table including an interesting debate regarding the placement of a new public toilet at the corner of Begbie and Front St next to the Interurban building. Is the toilet still being installed, or isn't it?The more things change, the more they stay the same. It was StatusQuo2.0 at "Club41" aka Metro Vancouver this week as they chose their new chair of the Board. He is none other than Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley. The Chair didn't bother to let the public (aka Metro Vancouver shareholders) that he was running until minutes before his name was put on the ballot - thus conveniently avoiding any media scrutiny. He also made some interesting comments about a 'review' to take place regarding the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant financial debacle.Metro Vancouver was also making headlines this week for all the wrong reasons. News media were reporting that the CAO for Metro Vancouver was paid over $700K in compensation and benefits in 2023. That's after the Board provided him with a hefty pay raise. How will that sit with taxpayers struggling to make ends meet? Will 2025 be the year New Westminster gets its Canada Day fireworks back? Or will it be a special drone show over the Fraser River. We discuss a motion coming to New West Council that aims to kickstart a discussion. In 2026 FIFA will be in our region and New West will be participating in the party. As part of that discussion, Council agreed to purchase up to two large outdoor digital screens to use in the community. Is it possible that sponsorships or grants can be used to offset the costs? Minhas moved a motion to explore that opportunity. What is SOFI? It's a report that outlines all of the expenditures at the City of New West. Interestingly well over $200,000 in transition allowances for several former elected officials was paid out in two separate calendar years. We explore what might be behind that move.In our look ahead segment, we talk about two motions coming to Council on July 8th in support of Community Safety Officers and a restriction on international travel for elected officials. We also discuss June 30 as Indigenous Survivors Day in New West.As always, the podcast is packed with great information and commentary. It's available for download on all major platforms.
Susannah Begbie grew up in rural New South Wales on a sheep farm and is now a GP who has worked all over Australia. She is the winner of Hachette's Richell Prize for 2022. The Deed is her first novel. Tom Edwards has spent most of his life running the farm by himself. He's not well pleased that his kids never came back to take their place on the land as he wanted. Tom's also dying and so he's come up with a plan. His kids will return to the farm and build him a coffin, in four days no less. They build him a coffin and they'll do it right, or he'll disinherit the lot of them. Jenny is the first back to Ellersly. She never really left the area and is the one to find Tom's body. Christine is reliably prompt, Dave hurries because as the only son he thinks he's getting it all and Sophie gets there, as she always does in her own time. The conditions on Tom's will at first puzzle then infuriate the siblings. Worse, the local lawyer stands to benefit from their disorganization and works to sow confusion in the ranks. The Deed is a tremendous family drama that variously shocks, delights and intrigues the reader with the machinations of the town of Coorong. The novel is told from the varying and contradictory points of view of the four Edwards siblings and their father Tom. Tom's view is hard bitten and uncompromising. He feels he never got any favours and so he's not about to start handing them out himself. As we flit between each of the children we see what this has meant through their lives. Jenny as eldest feels almost invisible and just wants someone who can see her for herself. Dave's role as the only son ultimately drove him away from the pressure. Christine feels noone ever appreciated her work keeping everything together, a role she's continued in her own family. And Sophie as youngest always tried to keep Tom smiling and perhaps never learned that she could be serious. The interplay of the siblings and the obvious tension arising from the reading of the will lights the fuse that plays out in a kind of battle between allies. As readers we are poised to choose sides but ultimately root for the four to come together and overcome. It's an interesting tension and hard to escape that for many people managing wealth transfer following the death of a parent is a macabre journey into bitterness and avarice. The conceit of building the coffin is brilliantly set to allow us to discover something of the landscape around Ellersly. For mine I had no idea about how this might be achieved and still imagine a rough hewn box not unlike the pencil boxes we all made at school writ large. The journey itself is set up to trouble the power dynamics and drive forward the characters. The Deed is a strange journey that is carried by the strength of its characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the pacing and energy of the narrative opening up parts of greater Australian life outside of my day to day. Loved this review? Mike Burton is not only the creator and host of Genuine Chit-Chat and Star Wars Comics In Canon podcasts, a great friend and supporter of the show, but he's picked our movie to review for this week, Trainspotting from 1996. Trainspotting, directed by Danny Boyle, was a bold and innovative endeavor that brought Irvine Welsh's acclaimed novel to the screen. Boyle, known for his dynamic filmmaking style, collaborated with screenwriter John Hodge to adapt Welsh's darkly comedic yet harrowing exploration of heroin addiction. The film's production faced challenges in translating the novel's intense and visceral narrative to the screen, particularly in depicting the gritty and hallucinatory aspects of addiction. The casting of a talented ensemble, including Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, and Robert Carlyle, contributed to the authenticity of the characters and the film's overall impact. Boyle's kinetic direction, combined with the pulsating soundtrack featuring tracks from iconic bands like Underworld and Iggy Pop, added an electrifying energy to the film. The production team skillfully captured the gritty urban landscapes of Edinburgh, enhancing the raw and immersive quality of the storytelling. "Trainspotting" achieved critical acclaim for its uncompromising portrayal of addiction, its dark humor, and its visual inventiveness. The film's success marked a turning point in British cinema, and its cultural impact endures, solidifying its place as a seminal work of the 1990s and a defining film of the British new wave. David Begbie Orsu And Orsa by Kent Creative
Begbie and Sean embark on a new era of the podcast 'fixing the world with fitness'. Here they discuss Physical Education (PE) at school and some suggestions for making kids more active.
What does music mean? Most people today, without realizing it or giving much of a second thought, think of music and art along the lines of 18th-century philosopher David Hume, who wrote: Beauty is no quality in things themselves: It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them; and each mind perceives a different beauty. One person may even perceive deformity, where another is sensible of beauty. Beauty, in other words, is in the eye of the beholder, and nothing more. Therefore, Hume continued in words that resemble a teenager telling mom and dad to get off his back: “Every individual ought to acquiesce in his own sentiment, without pretending to regulate those of others.” Rejecting notions of objective truth and universal morality, many in the modern world assume that beauty is not a category of reality that exists outside of the human mind but is entirely a subject of individual taste. Music can be fun, edgy, or distracting. It might even carry therapeutic benefits. But it isn't rooted in anything transcendent, eternal, or objective. Recently on the Upstream podcast, my colleague Shane Morris discussed music and meaning with Dr. Jeremy Begbie, a theologian at Duke Divinity School and the University of Cambridge. Dr. Begbie, whose work centers on the intersection of music and theology, argued that music is in fact not neutral. Rather, it is a function of the way we are made by God and ultimately points to deep truths about God and about ourselves. Here's Dr. Begbie: I was speaking to an atheist musicologist, a very distinguished musicologist not so long ago. And he said that music, he believes, ultimately, is about tuning us in to each other and to the physical world at large. It's about belonging, you see. ‘Oh, how interesting,' I said. It's interesting that Christianity has a little bit to say about that. It's not primarily our job in the world ... to be individuals who simply express themselves or simply get things off their chest, so to speak. God has made us for each other and has made us to live in harmony with this physical world in which we're set. And for me, therefore, it makes wonderful sense to say that this is what music is about. Indeed, it's what language is about. It's what hundreds of things are about—just this kind of worldview. Historically, many philosophers—from Plato to Aristotle to St. Augustine—reflected on the “three transcendentals”: goodness, truth, and beauty. Christian thinkers argued that these are attributes of God and therefore clues to the meaning of life. In this view, beauty is an objective reality, grounded in the nature and work of God Himself. This explains why beauty can make such a meaningful impact on human beings. Even those who reject the idea of universal truths and are cynical about our ability to truly know anything cannot help but wrestle with the pull of beauty. Joseph Pearce explained it this way in a recent article in The Imaginative Conservative, “What … is the role of good art? … The answer is to be found in the power of beauty to touch heads that have forgotten how to think and hearts that have forgotten how to love.” Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky famously suggested that “Beauty will save the world.” Dostoevsky's friend, 19th-century philosopher Vladimir Soloviev, explained why he believed this: In his convictions he never separated truth from good and beauty; in his artistic creativity he never placed beauty apart from the good and the true. And he was right, because these three live only in their unity. The good, taken separately from truth and beauty, is only an indistinct feeling, a powerless upwelling; truth taken abstractly is an empty word; and beauty without truth and the good is an idol. For Dostoevsky, these were three inseparable forms of one absolute Idea. This is not to suggest that there is no room for subjective experience and interpretation of beauty. Expressions of art, including music, must be perceived by those with tastes and preferences shaped by experiences, culture, knowledge, and various degrees of virtue. We might disagree on whether a Bach concerto carries more or less aesthetic value and technical excellence than a modern rock ballad. Still, that both can be distinguished from meaningless chaos, says something about order and design in the world. As does the fact that music is more than mere stimulus-response. Even if we don't know why, musical beauty points us beyond ourselves and offers a clue about the meaning of the universe and the God who made it and us. A deadly cybernetic organism is charged with protecting John Connor, the future leader of the...wait, no, it's not that T2, but the long-awaited sequel to the 1996 film Trainspotting (which we she-watched last month). Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie are back, albeit with grown-up names and grown-up grudges. Hot take - could this be that rarest of beasts - a sequel that is better than the original? Join us as we choose controversial opinions, favourite scenes and, of course, life.

First they were addicted to heroin, now they're addicted to *nostalgia* (but also still heroin)! Danny Boyle returns to the squalid Scottish world of Renton, Sick Boy, Spud, and Begbie for T2: Trainspotting, and Scott Aukerman and Sprague (aka the Artist Formerly Known as Shaun Diston) join us to talk about this under-seen legacy sequel. How did Danny Boyle and Ewan McGregor's real-life feud influence this film? Is Spud's arc in this basically just Bubbles' arc in season 5 of The Wire? Which is the better “much-later sequel starring Ewan McGregor in an iconic role” - this, or the Obi Wan Kenobi series on Disney+? Here we are in 2022 navigating cancel culture, Brexit, identity politics, war in Europe. How did we get here? Did we miss something? Robert Carlyle, who played the wildcard Begbie in the '90s hit Trainspotting, is here to show us that we did. That the world we live in was shaped by the forgotten decade: the 1990s. From Hong Kong to Moscow, Cool Britannia to No Frills flights, we travel back in time to key moments in the '90s that reverberate today in unexpected ways. Episode 1. Cool Britannia As government ministers promote the Levelling Up agenda, redistributing investment from London and the South East to the North and Midlands we return to the capital in the 1990s when 'Swinging London' started to become a symbol of unequal Britain. Cultural and economic forces converged as London reinvented itself in the '90s. Britpop, Young British Artists, fashion designers, gastro pups, coffee culture all propelled the capital into what Vanity Fair coined "Cool Britannia". Robert guides us through this tumultuous decade when competing visions were unleashed about what the cities and the country should become. Episode 2: Russia Robert Carlyle reveals how talks between Russia and the West in 1990 about Germany's re-unification has lead to the war in Ukraine. Was President Gorbachev really promised that NATO would not move one inch east, as Vladimir Putin recently claimed ? We hear from historians Margaret MacMillan and Mary Sarotte, author of Not One Inch, and from eye-witness Bob Zoellick, former United States Deputy Secretary of State. Episode 3: Gender When Harry Styles donned a dress for the cover of Vogue Magazine it caused a storm in an online teacup. Some commentators said it was the end of masculinity as we know it. Pretty much the same thing was said when David Beckham wore a sarong in public in 1998. Robert Carlyle asks if gender politics has changed much in three decades, as he takes us back to the era of the New Lad and Ladette. Along the way he hears from journalist Sean O'Hagan, who coined the term New Lad, Natasha Walter, author of The New Feminism and Professor Helen McCarthy. Episode 4: Internet As a new bill goes through parliament that hopes to ensure online safety, Robert Carlyle takes us back to a time when the internet seemed like a force for good, an online utopia where friends could re-unite. But, as he reminds us, the 90s was also the decade that witnessed the first prosecution for cyberstalking and when the term trolling was coined. Professors Helen McCarthy and John Naughton take us back to the days of AltaVista, Ask Jeeves and the cyber-cafe. We hear from Keith Teare, one of the people behind the world's first cyber-cafe called Cyberia, who explains why they never made a profit, despite having coffee shops across the world and online dating site. Episode 5: Tech Robert Carlyle uncovers a conflict in the 90s that we may not have been aware of – the crypto-wars between the so-called cypherpunks and the United States government. The fight was over online privacy and it was won by a computer programme called Phil Zimmermann, who faced four years in jail for releasing software called Pretty Good Privacy. As Jamie Bartlett, the author of The Missing Cryptoqueen explains, if it wasn't for Phil, we wouldn't be able to communicate securely online today. This unleashed a civil war in the Conservative Party which has echoed down the ages and arguably resulted in Brexit. David Davies MP was in the thick of that battle as Chief Whip to Prime Minister John Major. Racially motivated attacks increased, the British National Party won its first ever election, and the enquiry into the murder of Stephen Lawrence concluded that the Metropolitan Police was institutionally racist, something that many Londoners already knew. Dr Allan Kennedy on Gilderoy the Highland bandit and the truth behind Highland outlaws, not the handsome bare-chested warriors of the covers of romance novels but actually more like Begbie from 'Trainspotting' in a kilt. Ally Heather on Andy Coogan his grandad who was a POW in Japan working in a forced labour camp thirty miles from Nagasaki when the second atom bomb dropped and his experiences when he began his return home through the devastated city. Marenka Thompson Odlum is a PhD researcher on slavery connections to Glasgow's museum connections. She also led Black history walks around the city and was always struck by the David Livingstone statue panels - one of the few depictions of people of colour on public art in Glasgow. When you stop to look at them, they tell a story of everyday racism.

In this episode of Conversations on Hope, I sit down with Professor Jeremy Begbie to talk about hope, music, emotions, and worship. Begbie is the Thomas A. Langford Distinguished Professor at Duke Divinity School, Duke University, where he directs Duke Initiatives in Theology and the Arts. His primary research interest is the correlation between theology and the arts, in particular the interplay between music and theology. he is also an Affiliated Lecturer in the Faculty of Music at the University of Cambridge. In our conversation, Begbie proposes that emotions have to rightly directed and appropriately proportionate. Music has the power to evoke emotions, a power that must be stewarded well but not feared or avoided. Words, however, are needed to aim and direct our affections. Finally, we discussed how musicians and worship leaders keep our hearts fresh in worship.
"Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face..." according to Mike Tyson. But does it hurt to have a plan in the event that you run into another hunter who may be a bit aggressive, a landowner who has mistaken the property lines, or even a murderous clown in the woods? Chris and Kyle weigh in on some different scenarios and talk about how they plan to handle the different situations.
