Eric asked you you voted for an episode about Uncaught Serial Killers! Tonight Eric runs down some of the most mysterious serial killers of the past 50 years. This may not be cases that grabbed headlines around the world, but they are unnerving and worthy of attention just the same. Tonight we'll discuss: 1) The Doodler, a killer known for sketching his victims before killing them 2) The I-70 Killer who would shoot women he found working alone 3) Charlie Chop-Off who made a habit of cutting off his victims...well, you'll figure it out. 4) The New Bedford Highway Killer with a list of colorful suspects who all seem pretty plausable spookyas.com facebook.com/spookyas Music by Occultic Overtones
Tonight Eric tells the tale of alleged serial killer Joseph Metheny. Metheny was convicted of two murders and a third attempted murder, but the wilder aspects of his story didn't come to light until many years after his arrest. In a confession supposedly written by Metheny, he claims to have killed at least 7 people. Some, he claimed, we butchered and served as hamburgers at his roadside sandwich stand. These claims have never been verified, and Eric has his doubts about their factualness, but...it does make for one hell of a story! All this plus Eric discusses one thing he is truly afraid of: vacation! spookyas.com facebook.com/spookyas Music by Occultic Overtones
Tonight Eric is going over the history of what just may be the most famous means of execution: The Guillotine! Despite its gruesome reputation, the guillotine was actually invented as a more humane form of capital punishment. In fact, the man who it's named after, Dr. Guillotine, was against the idea of capital punishment and was not very pleased that the devise became so closely linked to his name. The French first made use of the guillotine in the 1790's and used it right up until 1977! In all that time, one question remained: was the guillotine actually any more humane than other forms of execution? All this plus Eric discusses his Halloween season and describes the differences between Sleepy Hollow and Salem...again. Tonight Eric welcomes his broth Dan Dwinnells back to the show as they talk about Devils and Demons. Sure, we all have a loose idea of what these evil creatures are and we're pretty sure we know who runs the show down in Hell...but it turns out the way most of us think of it is totally wrong! We'll dive into detail about the differences between THE Devil, devils and demons. Lucifer was the leader of the rebellion against God in Heaven. He is the number one fallen angel...but does that mean he is THE Devil? If so...who is Satan? Or Beelzebub? Tonight we'll get into all that plus discuss some of the better and lesser known members of the evil army. We'll also try to pick our patron devil! Long before Tales from the Crypt, The Twilight Zone or even Inner Sanctum, horror had a home on television. Tonight Eric goes old school to discuss Lights Out; television's original horror anthology series. But Lights Out didn't start with television. In fact, TV is basically the end of the story! Long before television, Lights Out was a hugely popular radio show making it's debut in 1934. It was not the first horror-themed radio program, but it was the nastiest. This was thanks in large part to the show's creator/head writer, Wyllis Cooper who had a taste fore gore and a twisted sense of humor. When he left the show, an up and coming young writer named Arch Oboler took over and brought the show to even greater heights. This is what Spookaroos of the 30's and 40's had as their doorway to horror. One particular episode was so memorable that it left lasting impressions on bth disgraced comedian Bill Cosby and novelist Stephen King...beware The Chicken Heart! spookyas.com facebook.com/spookyas Music by Occultic Overtones
Eric welcomes guest cohosts Olivia and Mackenzie, hosts of the true crime podcast Death By Champagne! Tonight Eric, Liv and Mack will cover the case of The Smiling Widow, Jessie Costello. Jessie was accused of poisoning her husband in 1933. Her trail received little fanfare...until the press started to focus on Jessie's looks. Suddenly, she was transformed into a bewitching enchantress who was able to capture the heart of any man she wished...including the jury at her trial! Jessie became infamous and she loved the spotlight being cast upon her. She posed for picture in her cell and even received flowers from her jailers. Tonight Eric welcomes Back Lilith Beest (aka Lil' Beesty) to talk about Halloween 2018 (the movie, not the holiday). Eric and Lil are both huge fans of Halloween 1978, but will they share the same passion for the latest entry? Spoiler: No, they will not. One will love it, one will tolerate it. They'll also give their thoughts on Jamie Lee Curtis, the motivations of Michael Myers and the sad state of the mental health profession as represented by all Halloween movies. spookyas.com facebook.com/spookyas Music by Occultic Overtones
Tonight Eric welcomes back returning guest host Emily Ferguson to talk about the horror-themed video games Chiller and Night Trap! We begin with Chiller, a 1988 arcade game which is still surprisingly gory and violent even by today's standards...and that's really saying something! The point of the game is to shoot a gun at helpless torture victims trapped (and naked) in a haunted house! What?!?! Then we move on to the 1987/1992 classic, Night Trap! This full motion video game let's you choose your own adventure (kind of) as you control security cameras in a house where teens are being murdered by mysterious creatures known as Augers and a clan of vampires! It's campy 80's fun and in 2017, the game was made available for ps4 in a special 25th anniversary addition so let's play! Plus Eric and Emily discuss the sexy and dangerous allure of arcades in the 1980's, New Hampshire's own Fun Spot, creepy men who like to hide in bushes, boobs AND butts, 80's hair, and the often overlooked terror of minimalist set dressing! And yell at our speakers as Eric and Emily try to remember the names of two pretty famous people! Spookyas.com facebook.com/spookyas Music by Occultic Overtones
Tonight Eric takes a trip into the bayou as he tells us about The Haunting of Manchac Swamp! This Louisiana swamp is not only haunted by the vengeful spirit of a long dead voodoo priestess, it's also said to be the hunting grounds of the rougarou or cajan werewolf! Julia Brown was a local faith healer known for her healing abilities and her powers of prophesy. But her seemingly unearthly knowledge caused her neighbors to fear her. Soon, they had convinced themselves that she was a voodoo priestess in league with dark forces. Soon enough, Julia began to predict that on the day she died, the whole town would suffer...and she was right! The rougarou is a werewolf-like creature said to be native to this area of the world. It especially enjoys the case of naught children and lapsed Catholics. It is very similar to a werewolf, though there are some key differences in how the cures is placed and how it can be removed. All this PLUS an important update about Eric's hometown haunt, John Stones Inn (aka Stone's Public House). spookyas.com facebook.com/spookyas Music by Occultic Overtones
It's that time of year again! Time to gather 'round that chimney where the stockings are hung with so much care...and tell ghost stories! In England, Christmas Eve was considered the prime night for telling ghost stories and we see no reason why that tradition should have fallen by the wayside; so we're bringing it back! Tonight Eric reads Charles Dickens' The Signalman. It concerns a signalman working at a lonely remote train station who is haunted by a strange faceless apparition that sees to be a harbinger of doom! Will he discover the phantom's meaning in time to prevent the next horror? Tune in tonight and find out for yourself! spookyas.com facebook.com/spookyas Music by Occultic Overtones and Rochmaninoff
This month marks the 50th anniversary of the release of The Beatles (White Album). Aside from all the great music on the album, it reminds all true crime fiends of The White Album's connection to Charles Manson and The Manson Family Murders. In the late 60's, cult leader Charles Manson told his followers that a race war was coming and The Family would have to hide in a secret underground city. Then, when the war was over, The Family would return to the surface and rule the world. But what proof did Charlie have of this prophecy? He cited two main sources: The Bible and The Beatles! Tonight Eric will break down the messages Manson allegedly took from both sources and explain how they tied into The Manson Family's plan to commit murder and start the war that Manson called "Helter Skelter". We'll also hear from Charles Manson himself and we'll hear what Beatle John Lennon has to say about Manson and hidden messages in Beatles music. spookyas.com facebook.com/spookyas Music By Occultic Overtones
Happy Halloween, Spookaroos!!! Eric rushed this episode to be sure to have it ready for you in time for Halloween so please forgive any little mistakes that may have been left in. Yes, host Eric Dwinnells is back to tell you about all the things he did to make the most of this year's Halloween season including a visit to The Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast, Gallows Hill Theater, and The Rebecca Nurse Homestead. He'll also tell you his thoughts on the new Halloween film. Don't worry: no spoilers. But also on this episode, Eric dives into the history of the infamous Ben Cooper Halloween Costume Company. If you're over 30, chances are pretty good that you owned at least one Ben Cooper costume in your childhood. They were those cheep boxed costumes that came with those thin plastic masks and (usually) plastic smocks with the licensed character's name on them. And what licensee they had! Pretty much every major movie, cartoon or TV was represented with a Ben Cooper costume of varying artistic quality and accuracy. Tonight Eric ponders the past and possible future of the iconic Ben Cooper costumes and tells you about a recent interview he did with the Iconography podcast. spookyas.com facebook.com/spookyas Music by Occultic Overtones
Eric Dwinnells, The Witchfinder General of Salem Massachusetts, has many thoughts about the city in which he carries out his work. So does guest cohost Brian Toney. Tonight they sit down without notes to discuss their true thoughts, feelings and theories about Witch City: Salem, MA. If you know anything about Salem, it's probably because of the witchcraft trials that took place there in 1692. Ultimately, at least 20 people were executed as a direct result of the witch trials and in the over 300 years that have followed, the city has grabbled with how to deal with this national tragedy. How can you both acknowledge the terror of the tragedy and yet still market it to millions of tourist? Salem is widely considered the Halloween capital of the world and with good reason: every day in Salem is Halloween. But in October, the city ramps up to a whole new level.Tonight Eric and Brian will talk about what makes Salem so special...and some ways in which (witch?) it could be better! spookyas.com facebook.com/spookyas Music by Occultic Overtones
Tonight Eric looks back on his religious upbringing and realizes everything he thought he knew about the christian afterlife was wrong! Using his natural-born curiosity, Eric has come to find Ghost in The Bible! What does the bible really say about ghost? What's so bad about talking to the dead? What did Jesus do when he came upon a possessed man? And both The Bible and Eric agree that you should steer clear of psychics and mediums, but they have a difference of opinion as to why! We'll also touch on what The Bible says will really happen to you when you die and what will happen at the end of the world as we know it. Oh, and we'll talk about The Witch of Endor! No, not THAT Endor. But still cool. spookyas.com facebook.com/spookyas Music by Occultic Overtones
Tonight Eric uses Google Voice to welcome another true-blue Spookaroo on to the show, Jeffrey Bergeron! Jeffrey is a history teacher and he chose tonight's subject: The Witchcraft Trial of Urbain Grandier! Grandier was a catholic priest in France during the 17th century. He was known as being something of a playboy despite his priestly vow of celibacy. This, plus some unkind remarks he'd made about his superiors in the church made him a lot of enemies. Enemies who would like to see him gone...one way or another! Eventually, the nuns at the local convent began to claim they were possessed by demons who stole into their bedrooms at night. Mother superior claimed to know who sent these demons: Urbain Grandier! And so the stage was set for a catholic priest to face charges of witchcraft against a convent of nuns and a slew of powerful enemies. We always love a good witchcraft trial and this one doesn't fail to deliver. Was Grandier really in league with the Devil? Was he the victim of a political conspiracy? Or can it really all be reduced to the vengeance of a woman scorned? All this and more on tonight's Spooky A S! spookyas.com facebook.com/spookyas Music by Occultic Overtones
Eric Dwinnells travels to one of his favorite places, Concord, MA to visit a haunted inn. But this isn't any old haunted inn, this is one which Eric already has a bit of a salty history with! Tonight Eric returns to The Colonial Inn, an 18th century inn and restaurant said to haunted by numerous friendly (mostly) ghost! Learn about the role the inn played in The American Revolution and how it is so perfectly located for history tourist. Of course we'll discuss the ghost including the little girl, the wounded patriot, and the murdered mistress! You'll also get a review of Eric's lunch; what a bonus! spookyas.com facebook.com/spookyas Music by Occultic Overtones
As the Witchfinder General of Salem, MA, many tourist stop host Eric Dwinnells which in-town attractions he'd recommend. If you are a monster fan, then without a doubt you must visit Count Orlok's Nightmare Gallery, Salem's one and only monster museum! Of course Salem is a lovely historic city, but let's face it...it's also a tourist trap filled with sub par offerings. But Count Orlok's is different: it's essentially a "wax museum"/haunted house created for monster fans by a monster fan. His name is James Lurgio. Tonight Eric sits down with James in the newly relocated and just re-opened Count Orlok's Nightmare Gallery for an in-depth interview where we'll learn all about the museum and a bit about James himself. We'll learn what turned James into a "monster kid" and how he transformed that love into a business. We'll discuss the celebrities that have come to visit as well as some of the regular weirdos that pass through. And James will definitively answer many fans' one criticism of the museum; the much maligned no photos policy! Eric had never met James before this interview (aside from a few emails to set it up) and this is not a paid endorsement. Eric just appreciates quality attractions in Salem and right near the top of that list is Count Orlok's Nightmare Gallery! You can find the Nightmare Gallery on FB HERE spookyas.com facebook.com/spookyas Music by Occultic Overtones
Tonight Eric takes a good look at the strange goings on at Bohemian Grove. There is no question that the Bohemian Club and it's summer camp is a real thing...but what is it exactly? If you ask the club its self, they would probably tell you it is a private club for distinguished gentlemen who like to blow off a little steep for two weeks in July away from the eyes of the press. But, if you ask conspiracy theorist like Alex Jones, he would be more likely to tell you the Bohemian Grove is a place where rich republicans world leaders meet to plot to control the world and practice strange occult rituals possibly including human sacrifice! So which is true? Well, several people, including Mr. jones, have successfully infiltrated the camps at Bohemian Grove and tonight we'll dig through a few of them to try and separate fact from fiction. We'll also take a look at the infamous Cremation of Care ceremony that Jones caught on film and try to determine if its footage of an actual human sacrifice or more like a poorly produced Disneyland stage show. We'll also discuss rumors of wild orgies, non-stop drinking, secret meetings, and the music Bohemian's listen to. We'll also discuss who makes up the membership of the bohemian club and how much membership costs, what two former presidents had to say about it, if Alex Jones qualifies as a garbage person, and Eric will give some suggestions on how The Bohemian Club could improve the festivities through better production! Eric wonders if he'd qualify as "a man of talent"? spookyas.com facebook.com/spookyas
