The Umpqua River was calling us over the 4th of July. Somehow we all made it to the pick up point after a wild afternoon of river floating. Come chat with us about the importance of sharing moments, making great memories and nurturing a healthy bond with your family. Providing a safe and secure home to foster physical and emotional safety of children is probably the single most important responsibility of parents to ensure a healthy future of society.

Smallmouth bass can be found in rivers throughout Oregon. The fish is an invasive species and has a big appetite for salmon smolt. Smallmouth bass have been disturbing ecosystems and compete with other species for food and habitat. The Native Fish Society will host two events on Saturday to raise awareness about the problem. The “bass bashes” will happen on the Molalla River and the Umpqua River. Attendees are encouraged to catch as many smallmouth bass as they can, and the event includes a cookout full of the freshly caught fish. Kirk Blaine and Liz Perkin are the southern and northern Oregon coordinators, respectively, of the Native Fish Society. They join us with more details about the smallmouth bass and the events.

This week I'm visited by Kirk Blaine & Jim McCarthy again as we discuss the continuing effort to get the Winchester Dam removed from the Umpqua River. We discuss the unfinished repairs and it's added danger to the dam, the State's seriousness and proposed action, the many violations the dam's owners face, the lack of Federal action despite the infractions at that level, the pitiful salmon returns on this run due to the dam, the speed at which removal can return the river to it's natural state, and what the public can do help. For more information please head to WaterWatch.org

Tonight Brian features an interview that he co-hosted with Daniel Barnett from the UK. They got to sit down and have a very candid conversation with The Skeptical Scientist from Finding Bigfoot, Ranae Holland. Research Biologist Ranae Holland was born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. There, she was first introduced to the Bigfoot craze in the 1970's by her father. They forged a special connection while watching movies and televisions shows, and reading about Bigfoot. In 2011, Ranae became a co-host of the Animal Planet show, "Finding Bigfoot". Though Ranae is not a member of the BFRO and does not believe in Bigfoot, she is fascinated by the phenomenon, and is excited to have found a way to combine her scientific knowledge, fieldwork skills, and love of the wilderness to investigate alleged sightings. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences at the University of Washington, where she was selected for and worked with the distinguished Alaska Salmon Program. For over a decade, Ranae has conducted fisheries research throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Ranae continues with her efforts as a dedicated field biologist, and she regularly works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), as well as private entities. Her most recent field research efforts are focused on steelhead behavior in the Umpqua River basin in South Central Oregon. In keeping with her enjoyment of the outdoors, Ranae spends her free time Spey and fly fishing, hiking, camping and kayaking. She also enjoys teaching and lecturing to students about critical thinking, science, conservation, and, of course, her search for Bigfoot.Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Book Sasquatch Unleashed The Truth Behind The LegendLeave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsVisit Hangar 1 PublishingFactor Meals Use Code ODYSSEY50 At CheckoutBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

Derrick spends 3 days with Jody Smith Guide Service hunting a blacktail deer deep in the logging country of Western Oregon just 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Jody's family moved to the area as German immigrants in the 1840s via the National Land Claim and he was born and raised hunting and loving firearms with his father and grandfather. Jody said he hosts a lot of clients who are trying to complete their hunting slams and still need a blacktail deer or a Roosevelt elk. He's a hunting or fishing guide year round based on the seasons and specializes in Roosevelt elk, blacktail deer, and Rio turkey as well as salmon, sturgeon and smallmouth fishing on the Umpqua River. Derrick and Jody talk about how times have changed just since the 1970s and how 5th grade Jody bought a rifle from an older fellow on the school bus for $25 and then had his principal hang onto it for him until he could pick it up for his school bus ride home. Towards the end and in true Oregon fashion, Derrick and Jody get rained on as Jody tells heartfelt and emotional stories about learning gun safety from his grandfather as well as his most memorable client who was dying from cancer and was blessed with a successful Roosevelt elk in the most perfect of circumstances. Derrick lived in western Oregon for 2.5 years and never had the chance to harvest a good representation of a blacktail buck. This trip fulfilled that dream and Jody and Derrick share the adventure. . . . . .On The Horizon episodes brought to you by:Horizon FirearmsTexas Ammunitioniota OutdoorsStiller22 Creedmoor Join us on InstagramJoin us on FacebookVideo version available on Horizon Firearm's YouTube Channel On The Horizon podcast: Founder of Horizon Firearms Derrick Ratliff gathers guests to share and discuss outdoor industry expertise and memorable hunting adventures. Laurel Braitman grew up in nearby Santa Paula and attended Thacher School before embarking on a circuitous and peripatetic career that led her to the faculty at Stanford School of Medicine where she is the Director of Writing and Storytelling. She just published her memoir, "What Looks Like Bravery," about her family and journey through grief, loss, growth and love. She previously wrote the New York Times best-seller "Animal Madness." Braitman's father, a prominent cardiac surgeon in Ventura County, was diagnosed with cancer when Laurel was three, and he endured brutal treatments one after another with the purpose of teaching her and her brother everything they needed to know about life. When he died, Braitman blamed herself for not being able to heal him herself, and lived in denial for years, leading to one misadventure after another, especially in the partner department. "Bravery" takes us along on her road to redemption, with stops along the Umpqua River in Oregon, the Aleutian Islands, Lake Como in Italy, the high desert of New Mexico and the Bay Area. With lots of familiar Ojai references. She faced one tragic loss after another, trying to find meaning amid the devastation. The book will inevitably be compared to Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat, Pray, Love" and Cheryl Strayed's "Wild," but it holds a more poignant and hopeful tone and ends with a twist that sums up the hard-earned wisdom found along the way. We talked about Ojai in the good old days, steelhead fishing, growing up country and how death haunts us all. We did not talk about Jimmy Piersall's battle with depression, the collected sketches of Monty Python's Flying Circus or Darwin's finch collection at the British Museum & Library. Look for her book tour - she will be giving a reading on Saturday, March 18th at the Deer Lodge from 3 to 6 p.m.

Stan gives us a history of the fish abundance in the South Umpqua River, and the alarming low numbers this year. Both Coho and spring chinook seem to be on the brink of extension in the south Umpqua, following summer steelhead that are already extent.Restoration activities include putting large wood in streams, because Oregon law required large wood to be removed from steams to protect bridges and other infrastructure. Thus, all the fish habitat created by large wood was removed, and now needs to be replaced.Beavers can help put wood in streams, but beavers were almost extirpated in Oregon and also need some restoration help. There is a 2019 Beaver Conference in Canyonville. See link below for that.Stan also talks about logging practices damaging to fish, herbicide use damaging to all wildlife, and which fire-management practices are good and which are not.For more information, see:http://surcp.org/South Umpqua Rural Community Partnershipandhttp://stateofthebeaver.org/2019 Beaver Conference, Canyonville Oregon.
