In this episode of The Open Door, panelists Thomas Storck, Andrew Sorokowski, and Christopher Zehnder interview Christopher Villiers on his book Versing the Mystery: Poems (December 11, 2024)This collection of poems verses the mystery of God and Creation. Exploring the stories and characters of Scripture, Classical history and myth, the reader confronts the glory of God and is plunged into the depths of the human condition. This work deals with the sacred and the profane, the sublime and the ridiculous. Twenty-first century readers are confronted by their own needs and greeds reflected in the foundations of western civilisation. There are also more directly personal poems, of love, hate, success and failure, rooted in the life of a rhyming sinner inhabiting an English village near the sea. And if none of that appeals to you, then at least there are also owls campaigning for political office.Versing the Mystery
What does it mean when we call God our Redeemer? Seeing Boaz in action in Ruth 4 gives us a small glimpse of what Jesus has done for us, and the joy he takes in our rescue.

E140: Have you ever heard the saying “If Johnny jumped off a bridge would you do it too?” or felt pressure to have to do things just because your neighbor or someone from work had or did something? Of course we all get these feelings but today I speak to some things I'm noticing from how social media has blown this feeling out more than we've ever experienced and it's happened so fast I don't think we understand it in full yet. Social media where we all connect and live so much of our lives now has made a new version of keeping up with the joneses that isn't healthy. I believe we now see mostly just the things want us to see or what to show and not nearly as much of the how it happened to truth behind it to provide the context we need. Let talk about ways social media is good but we can limit it's power on our day. On this episode Dave talks through thoughts on this concept and brings in context, stories, and things that have and haven't worked for him combatting this feeling. In This Episode We Cover How mindset issues can stop creative How social media is affecting us Issues with content algorithms How the human mind has been created verses how fast we have changed our environments Limiting social media to control your day Keeping focus in the morning Saving time waste from social Versing yourself instead of others “How” it's happening, fake indicators of success Quotes “Now it's escalated, on every social media platform at all times we can see what they are up to. On social media we can post only what's good in our lives all the time and keep all the bad hidden all the time.” - Host Dave Swillum “We often don't have time to know if what we are introducing into our lives and way of life is good or bad because it's moving so fast.” - Host Dave Swillum “That's the hardest race to win, when you're versing yourself. That's something I'm much more interested in winning.” - Host Dave Swillum Resources Noted In This Podcast Episode Keeping Up With The Jone's Definition Cited https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keeping_up_with_the_Joneses The Social Dilemma Documentary https://www.netflix.com/title/81254224 Newsfeed Eradicator Chrome Plugin To Block Social https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/news-feed-eradicator/fjcldmjmjhkklehbacihaiopjklihlgg?hl=en Waking Up From Work Podcast Links IG / Tik Tok / Clubhouse / Twitter / HiHo Follow & DM Me! @davewakeup Merch To Support Us! https://wakeup.itemorder.com/sale?fbclid=IwAR30nyVXdpFaax0mN0CRcC_mVjNzafbMo0spds82eoG-GMo01HG6Uq0dvzw Patreon (If you want to support the show check out our sweet offers for you) https://www.patreon.com/wakingupfromwork Facebook Community to connect to creatives https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakingupfromwork/about/ Email wakeupfromworkpodcast@gmail.com Youtube Channel & Series https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJeddF25VuWn8Eg3Fhy13fQ?view_as=subscriber For audio advice and more in depth music content from Dave www.crawlspaceaudio.com Dave's Indie Band Broadwing https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/broadwing/tennessee

This week I start by giving Tom shit about his cryptic late night Twitter posts. Then we both come down with a severe case of verbal diarrhea, splattering on about how streaming music services do “brutal backdoor things” to musicians, the importance of backing up your data, how I still prefer to buy physical CDs, how @hollcampagna should be our in-studio fact checker, how a giant solar flare could wipe out all of our digital existences, band beefs, and that Tom needs to work on his flams. I reveal a weird thing I used to do as a kid, and inquire if Tom also was told to put plastic bags over his socks to go out in the snow when he was a kid. We spend an absorb anent amount of time talking about how insanely large the planet is while Tom obsesses via Google Maps over tiny islands in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, while maintaining that the earth is flat, and suggests that were an apocalypse to happen he could Jet Ski across the Great Lakes, possibly while running drugs? Also, shout out to @DaveAttell, and @MarcMaron; I reference an old joke of Marc’s that hit home with me.#offkilter #ashleysimpson #vegas #worldslargestprairiedog #marcmaron #daveattellFollow Tom on Twitter @tomisalive, and on Instagram @TomFalconeApartmenta3pod.com, Apartment A3 Podcast on YouTube, @apartmenta3pod on twitter, Nick2late on Instagram
