In this episode, we're talking about something that still shows up in lots of parenting advice - the idea that “just a little slap” is harmless, helpful, or even necessary. We explore: Why physical punishment (yes, even a slap on the hand) isn't just ineffective — it can be harmful What the research tells us about physical discipline and long-term outcomes for children What respectful, effective discipline can look like How we support children's behaviour without shame, fear, or force Whether you were smacked as a child and want to do things differently, or you're deep in the trenches and looking for a better way - this episode is for you. You are not alone, and you don't have to figure this out without support. Parenting support and education:

I have released this episode out of my usual rhythm because the day of release is a significant day in Aotearoa New Zealand. On this day, July 24, 2024, the Royal Commission of inquiry into Abuse in State and Faith-based Care released their final report. This report, which took six years to compile, details the abuse of thousands of New Zealand children and other vulnerable people while in the care of the state or faith based organisations. The report estimates that between 1950 and 1999, over 200,000 people suffered abuse while in the care of these organisations. Ken Clearwater, is himself a survivor of sexual abuse, and has been made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his 30 years of supporting other male survivors of abuse, and advocating for legislative change. He was one of those who regularly called for the government to launch a royal commission of inquiry, and we talk both about Ken's own journey, and the inquiry itself. He has spoken at the United Nations about the work he is involved in in Aotearoa. Obviously there are things in this conversation that may be challenging to listen to, including mention of rape, sexual assault, and suicide. Please take care of yourself and stop listening or take breaks if you need to. Please use your own support structures, and make use of the links in the show notes to seek help if you need to. While there are some hard truths in this episode, it is ultimately an episode of hope. It is a conversation with a man who has grown something powerful from the evils he was put through. It is the story of how men have supported other men, and how goodness can thrive, even in the face of great evil. Find Ken's Ted Talk here. They say that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” but I'm not sure this one passed the vibe check. When my creative director Grant Furness showed me the twitter jokes circulating around in late-May about Swift Lifestyle, I thought can you imagine the conversation that brand owner had with his design agency…or most likely the international freelancer on Fivver. It's like “Hey Bro! I want my sports nutrition brand to look like GHOST Lifestyle…you know one of the most recognizable companies in the industry that I'm about to compete in. Yeah…just literally copy it, but to make it more swifty by tossing in an aggressive looking bunny rabbit…maybe just use one that looks like another sport nutrition brand called Sneak.” Which if you really think about that decision…it's very meta IYKYK. I discovered a strategy that has allowed me to attract customers to the tune of over 100 each day (all on autopilot) AND I realized that it's possible for EVERYONE to do. We've all been there. You've lost count of all the “Hey Girl!” or “Hey Bro!” messages to strangers on social media or the nonstop pitching of your products and services just to make a sale. You don't even want to recall how many times you've been ignored. At this point, you're starting to wonder if you're ever going to land more sales. As a home business owner of a multi-7-figure influencer brand, I have learned that attracting an endless pool of perfect customers is EVERY entrepreneur's dream. I know this because I used to be glued to my screen 24/7 trying to start conversations with complete strangers that often lead to zero sales and lots of frustration. This strategy, that I talk about on the show, saves me from a ton of headaches and allows me to attract customers, while still having a life. It's a highly effective strategy that I've been using successfully for over 8 years now and I want to share it with you so you can have similar, if not better, results than me. So listen up… If you're tired of having poor to little results when trying to attract customers, this episode is for YOU. Say goodbye to all those weird messages to strangers on social media, my friend. It's time to crush it!
