Hello! And welcome to season to the newest episode of The Dana Gould Hour podcast. Fasten your enthusiasm harness, we are blasting off, yet again. We have two, count 'em, two, fantastic guests today. Richard Edlund is a legend. In his amazing career, he is known first and foremost as one of the founders of ILM, Industrial Light & Magic, which created the special effects for a little film called Star Wars, and revolutionized how movies were made in Hollywood. But that is just the tip of the iceberg, Edlund began his career in the late '50s early '60s. When you watch on old episode of the original Addams Family TV show, that's Richard Edlund's hand coming out of the box as Thing. He designed the font for the original Star Trek ,and on and on and on. Also, Dave Bertolino is here. Dave is the creator of Spooky World, founded in Berlin, Massachusetts, the middle of nowhere! Spooky World became a nationally known horror theme park attraction. It started from nothing, and immediately became HUGE. Dave has a new book out entitled Behind The Screams At Spooky World and he'll be here to discuss that. Who looks like an accountant but is close pals with Linda Blair, Tom Savini and Alice Cooper? Dave Bertolino, that's who. True Tales From Weirdsville tells the tale of schlockmeister par excellence William Castle. From Emergo to Percepto to Illusiono, William Castle was the gimmick king of b-movies. Larger than life, stranger than fiction, more real than any reality you can conjure, Mr. William Castle. There are some great live performances coming up, so check out the events page at www.danagould.com/events/! And now, it's on, to our filthy business.

The 1937 Flood Watch Podcast

Charlie Bowen remembers a conversation he once had with his old buddy Jim Strother. It was decades ago and the two of them were reminiscing about a time even earlier.“Remember,” Jim said, “when you'd see a fella ramblin' along carrying a guitar case, and he'd have his coat collar turned up against the wind and a cap pulled down over his eyes. “Just one look and you knew everything you needed to know about that guy.” You know, it probably wasn't always spitting snow, but it certainly is in today's fanciful memory of that scene. And the soundtrack? Then and now? Why, it was always an early Bob Dylan tune, wasn't it? Like this one. Those memories came roaring back at last week's rehearsal when the first tune that popped into the guys' heads that evening was “Don't Think Twice, It's All Right,” a song that Charlie loved from 1963's Freewheelin' Bob Dylan album.LearningTo this day Bowen still remembers Strother using the same song to patiently try to teach him the “Merle Travis pick” whose alternating bass characterized so much of 1960s folkdom.Curiously, the young Dylan said he himself was still learning his composition. “It's a hard song to sing,” he told journalist Nat Hentoff, who wrote the liner notes for the album. “I can sing it sometimes, but I ain't that good yet.”Bob noted that he didn't yet know how to “carry myself” the way veteran musicians like Big Joe Williams, Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly and Lightnin' Hopkins did.“With those older singers,” Dylan told Hentoff, “music was a tool, a way to live more, a way to make themselves feel better at certain points. As for me, I can make myself feel better sometimes, but at other times, it's still hard to go to sleep at night.”As repored here earlier, Bob said of “Don't Think Twice” that a lot of city singer “make it sort of a love song — slow and easygoing — but it isn't a love song. It's a statement that maybe you can say to make yourself feel better. It's as if you were talking to yourself.” For more about the song's history, click here for an earlier Flood Watch article.More Music? Ian and Dr. AC return to provide more haunting analyses of a William Castle Classic and its slipshod 21st Century remake! In 1960's 13 Ghosts, a destitute family inherits an old mansion from a distant, wealthy relative. Shortly after moving in they discover the place is already occupied by...you guessed it! The only way to see and deal with these pesky poltergeists is to don a pair of goofy experimental glasses--a version of which allowed moviegoers to see the spirits in "Illusion-O"!Decades later, Dark Castle Pictures gave us director Steve Beck's (very loose) re-imagining, in which the house is no longer just a mansion, but a marvel of mechanisms, glass, and mayhem that would make the Umbrella Corporation blush. There's also a higher body count, buckets of blood, and a Satanic subplot that clears the shark and collides with the sun.In this spoilerific look at both films, Ian and AC continue to make the case for William Castle as a great horror filmmaker whose reputation as a cheesy gimmick-monger is unfair. They also discuss the key differences between the sly classic and the sloppy remake--and the unexpected benefits of watching the films in reverse order!Support Kicking the Seat on Patreon, subscribe to us on YouTube, and follow us at:XLetterboxdInstagramFacebookShow Links:Watch the 13 Ghosts (1960) trailer.Watch the Thir13en Ghosts (2001) trailer."Castle Freaks" is the next leg in our classic horror journey. Anyone tuning into Fox News last week might think the channel had converted to a home shopping network that sold only one product - the glorious leader himself Donald J. Trump. The president was treated like an overpriced trinket. “Look at how he stands next to Xi Jinping. Observe how his tiny makeup covered hands touch the Chinese leader's! Such majesty!”It wouldn't have surprised me if Fox shifted to a sales pitch while discussing the president, “If you call right now, you too will get our exclusive offer and pay for your own Glorious Leader replicate in four easy to pay installments of $19.99!”There were no definitive trade deals to crow about, no negotiations with Iran, and no relief in sight for sky-high gas prices.Trump dined with and stood next to the Chinese president while a small group of billionaire business owners followed them around like dutiful ducklings.China is known for making promises it doesn't keep, stealing intellectual property, threatening its neighbors, committing human rights abuses, cheating on trade agreements, suppressing freedom of speech, crushing dissent, and violating international embargoes and sanctions.None of this seemed to bother Trump. If Xi Jinping promised to buy more U.S. soybeans, then that was good enough for the president even if the country has still not matched its prior commitments to U.S. farmers. It was a lot of pageantry with very little substance, another distraction for Trump's disastrous war in the Middle East and failed domestic policies.Other topics on the network included the ongoing war with Iran, an attack on Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and the network's aggressive promotion of Spencer Pratt, a former reality television star, for Los Angeles mayor.
