We have an incredibly insightful interview with Michele & Kieran Mulroney. If you haven't listened to both episodes of their show The Sleeping Father, you must do so now. It's truly outstanding! This interview is crucial for anyone who wants to know the real story of how so many careers in Hollywood go. It's mandatory listening for aspiring writers and striking writers in a dry spell creatively. Michele & Kieran talk about getting their start in the business, adapting Dickens for dogs, and they discuss the ten year draught they had where they wrote a dozen spec screenplays that didn't sell. You're going to hear how they broke that losing streak in the best way possible: writing exactly what they wanted to write. It's a must listen for anyone aspiring to work in Hollywood.Get the video for The Sleeping Father table read for as little as $5 by going to https://maximumfun.org/joinFor more Dead Pilots Society episodes and information about our live shows, please subscribe to the podcast!Make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Instagram, and Twitter, and visit our website at deadpilotssociety.com

Victoria shares books that were particularly helpful to her around fat activism and eating disorder recovery memoirs. She shares how much of her initial recovery journey was explored alone, rather than with support. i went to a book sale today and i judged all the books by their covers. or more specifically, their spines. i chose the books based on the lettering on their spines and i guess we’ll see how it goes! but wow, ugh, some book covers are so ugly. i’m just hoping that if i’m drawn to the aesthetic of the cover art then i may be drawn to the content or style of writing?i judge people based on their aesthetics also (it’s a shortcut we all take, yah?) but it gets confusing because of places like urban outfitters and also because some of my favorite people have truly upsetting fashion sense.but like books, and people, i love a good recommendation. that way i don’t have to make time-saving judgements based on aesthetics. so what/who would you recommend to me?DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Valley Gals “Come Over” Real Rock01:24 Post Moves “Cerulean” No Dignity in Haste04:56 ITCHY BUGGER “Baker Man” Done One07:18 Crisman “Rock” Crisman Tape09:32 Xenia Rubinos “DIOSA” DIOSA vs. BUGEISHA12:17 Gutter Girls “Love Song” Gutter Girls EP13:59 Mister Goblin “Calendar Dogs” Is Path Warm?18:09 Paperman “fool zero” cherry brain21:37 Overwhelmed “Thirty Five” Who Rules The World?23:58 Les Halles “Golden Hour V-VI” Golden Hours26:19 Sondra Sun-Odeon “Oaks” Desyre29:16 franz murder “a dreamlike place…” brat school32:19 Post/Boredom “Everything Avoider” Ritualistic Time Abuser35:19 Tara Jane O'Neil “The Crying Game” Songs for Peacock38:57 2 Chevrons “Disappear” No Rules In Outta Space41:49 PickleBoy “downer days” taking care43:45 P.P. Welcome back! It has been an exciting week for us at the time of recording. It's been exactly one week since Halloween for you all, but for us it has only been a day so there are plenty of adventures to catch up on. Noah definitely has spooky things on his mind and talks about Corpse Bride for his portion of the Feature Presentation, delving into the parallels of how we are the dead brides of Christ who could not be married to Him while He is alive and we are dead. Then Elias goes back to his shorts and talks about Paperman so he can discuss different responses to when God has an obvious plan and you cannot escape from His will. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ocvepod/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ocvepod/support

Life Sentences (Godine, 2022) tells three interconnected stories about a family in his home country of Ireland. In lyrical, moving prose, with characters that reach across the years, Billy O'Callaghan describes births, deaths, war, and the life of his family. The book begins in the 1920's with Jeremiah, who survived as a soldier in the Great War. He's drunk and jailed on the night before his sister's funeral to prevent him from killing his sister's husband. “Life had its struggles,” he says as he muses about his family and experiences, “but we bore them in the way that our kind always do.” The second part goes back to the 1880's, and Jer's mother, Nancy, recounts being the only member of her family to survive the Great Potato Famine. Starving, she left her tiny island home to find work on the mainland and was wooed by Michael Egan, the man who fathered her two children and haunted her for years. The third section is in the voice of Nellie, Jer's youngest daughter, who is nearing the end of her life. This is a beautifully written novel about family, home, poverty, loss, and the struggle to live in a difficult world. Billy O'Callaghan, from Cork, Ireland, is the author of four short story collections (In Exile, In Too Deep, The Things We Lose, The Things We Leave Behind, and The Boatman) and the novels The Dead House and My Coney Island Baby. His work has been translated into a dozen languages and earned him numerous honours, including four Bursary Awards for Literature from the Arts Council of Ireland and, in 2013, a Bord Gais Energy Irish Book Award for the Short Story of the Year, as well as shortlistings for the COSTA Award and the Royal Society of Literature's Encore Award. His short stories have appeared in such literary journals and magazines around the world as: Agni, the Chattahoochee Review, the Kenyon Review, London Magazine, Los Angeles Review, Narrative Magazine, Ploughshares, the Saturday Evening Post and Winter Papers. A new novel, The Paper Man, will be published in the UK and Ireland by Jonathan Cape in 2023. When Billy isn't reading or writing, he's a big fan of Liverpool Football Club (called soccer in the U.S.). G. P. Gottleib interviews authors of beautifully written literary fiction and mysteries, and tries to focus on independently published novels, especially by women and others whose voices deserve more attention. PATREON MOVIE DISCUSSION: This movie was selected by our Patreon Supporters over at the Cinematic Doctrine Patreon. Support as little as $3 a month and have your voice heard! 2021 is over! Well, almost! Tune into this last episode of Cinematic Doctrine for 2021 with the last Patreon Pick of the year! Patreon Supporters didn't disappoint with their votes, and we're happy to discuss the Summer Blockbuster Free Guy! Topics: Melvin and Daniel's experience with video games, and how their gaming history impacted some of the comedy and atmosphere to Free Guy.Free Guy has a decent amount of clever, video-game themed jokes that are clearly written by people who actually play video games. It's great that Free Guy doesn't take itself too seriously while also flavoring in serious concepts of individuality, the value of the moment, experience, etc.Unfortunately, a lot of people reacted to Free Guy in exactly the way Melvin hates; talking about a ridiculous, non-serious film as a means to discuss theology.Talking about other alternate-world video game stories. The romance subplot was really effective for Melvin....except Daniel notices that the ending of the romance subplot is literally the ending of the short-film Paper Man.To Melvin's chagrin, there's some light biblical introspection: Does it matter if we're living in a fake world? Would that revelation change how we move or live through this world? For Daniel: Does Guy have value if he's an AI? Or are how a human treats an AI more indicative of the human's character than the AI's value? All of the Twitch culture stuff in the movie is really bad and really cringe.Where does Free Guy rank among video game movies?Recommendations: Steve Gregg - "Revelation: Four Views, Revised & Updated"Defunctland (YouTube Channel)Steven Hall - "The Raw Shark Texts" and "Maxwell's Demon"Support on Patreon for Unique Perks! sent $$$ this week to Norcal Resist’s Humanitarian Parole Applications support.actionnetwork.org/fundraising/humanitarian-parole-applications“Sacramento is home to the largest community of resettled Afghan immigrants in the US. The current upheaval in Afghanistan has left many local Afghan people scared for relatives they left behind. Many have been trying for months, even years, to help relatives leave Afghanistan, but the process is incredibly slow and difficult.Humanitarian Parole allows folks to enter the US, with opportunity to then apply to regularize their status through family adjustment, asylum, or other legal pathways. Unfortunately, it is extremely expensive, costing $575 PER PERSON per family– even infants. We are raising funds to be able to cover this tremendous cost for 25 families at our upcoming pro se Humanitarian Parole clinic.Thank you for your support of our local immigrant community!”DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)Peach Kelli Pop “King Size” Gentle LeaderCool Maritime “Mossage” Sharing WavesFlasher “Pressure” Constant ImageEternal Summers “Oblivious” Every Day It Feels Like I’m Dying…Alex Macfarlane “Good With Little Numbers” Planetarium NightsFreezing Cold “Shape of Escape” Demo 2017Bike Crash “I Discovered South Philly” Surprise!Braids “Burdock & Dandelion” Collarbones / Burdock & DandelionHot Tang “Secret Beach” Mostly MallardsScrim “Avocado” ScrimCozy Slippers “Not Hard To Say Goodbye” Postcards EPJulian “Car” Real DistancePaperman “talkingtoolong” dialogue with a new motherPrinsess “Made It Better” FaithDusk “Done Nothin” DuskSediment Club “Hydraulic Saint” Stucco Thievesmothpuppy “Kilgore Falls” Cool & PrettyThe Shifters “Cope With A Half” Just Sat Down 7"MALL WALK “Out To Lunch” Rose B/W Out To LunchHana vu “Shallow” How Many Times Have You Driven By

This. Is. A. Rant. Look, I get mad sometimes and go on long rants and bore my wife quite a bit sometimes. But this time, I went and saw "Free Guy" starring Ryan Reynolds, and it stirred up some controversy in my mind that I need to purge! So, here we are, the first in hopefully a series of rants on the unlikely and very unforeseen connection between the new film "Free Guy" and the 2012 Academy Award winning animated short, "Paperman".Free Guy (2021) is only in theaters and Paperman (2012) is currently not on Disney+, but is available in low quality on YouTube, or attached to Wreck-It Ralph. At the age of 17, James Lake was diagnosed with bone cancer that resulted in many months of chemotherapy and the amputation of his right leg. It was also at this time that James developed his passion for art and chose to sculpt from a non-traditional sculptors material: cardboard! James believes in art for all; art beyond race, gender, age, ability and disability. His life-sized and beyond paper sculptures are detailed and realistic, and have popped up in public spaces all over the UK and Europe. www.jameslakesculpture.co.uk
On this episode David James Roberts, local Tacoma author, sits down for an exclusive GCP one-on-one conversation with Justin. David's first book, "The Paper Man” is a fictional story based around the real life soccer player, Matthias Sindelar. Matthias was arguably the greatest player of his generation and his death in 1939 is still in question to this day. After growing up just outside of New York city, attending college in Arizona, and working in New Mexico and Kansas, David relocated to the PNW in 2014. In addition to writing, he has worked in radio, movie and television production, and as a college instructor. He has also begun working on a follow-up book which he hopes to have done by spring 2020. 02:04 – Justin gives a shout out to the listeners that have posted reviews of the podcast, expresses his appreciation of the guests that have been on the show in the past, and talks on the GCP plan for the New Year's episode. He introduces David, David talks about what his book, The Paper Man, is about, and how the book was not only about events that happened during the last days of Matthias Sindelar's life, he talks on how it was also about what it means for someone to be in a position of power even though he was outside the government. 12:48 – David talks on what drew him to the story and writing the book, the interweaving of sports and politics during the time of the early 1930's, and the cultural aspects soccer has around the world. He speaks to how soccer is also a universal language around the world, the year that soccer was officially formalized, and what parts of the book are the fictionalized pieces of the story. Justin shares where people can find the book online, David talks on where he grew up, and what brought him to Tacoma. 29:49 – David shares the cultural differences he has seen between the mid-west and the PNW, how most of us, regardless of where you live in the country, have the same desires and hopes in life, and how he felt right at home when moving to Tacoma. He talks on what inspired him to write the book during the National Novel Writing Month, the length of time it took him to edit and flush out the book after writing it, and reminds listeners that anything creative takes practice to master. 44:39 – David shares places he has never been that he'd love to go to, countries he's been to that he'd love to go back to, and what it was like for him to experience his first live soccer match. He talks about being attracted to soccer teams that represent their community, his favorite work throughout his career, and how he ended up being an assistant producer on the documentary “The Life Blood and Rhythm of Randy Castillo”. Thanks David for sitting down with Justin for an intriguing conversation on the book and your career! Special Guest: David James Roberts.
Acts 20:17-38. What would it look like or feel like if I was able to fully surrender to the spirit of God within me? Do I even want to take that risk? Caleb plays the short film "The Paperman" during this sermon. It can be found on YouTube.
