Synthetic Dreams Podcast

Today's fascinating episode features singer, songwriter and guitarist, Miki Berenyi. In 1987, Miki met Emma Anderson, a previous guest on Synthetic Dreams and formed the band, Lush. The group went on to release three critically acclaimed albums on legendary record label, 4AD. The band officially split in 1996, but reformed for a series of well received live shows in 2016.In 2018, Miki formed a new band called, Piroshka, which featured her partner Kevin McKillop (aka Moose) Micheal Conroy and former Elastica drummer, Justin Welch. The group released two albums on the always excellent Bella Union label.Miki's memoir Fingers Crossed, was published by Nine Eight Books In September 2022. It's extremely well written, funny, and, in parts, very moving - well worth a read. In recent years, Miki has been recording and playing shows as part of the Miki Berenyi Trio, which features Moose and guitarist Oliver Cherer. We discuss, amongst other things, the making of their truly brilliant debut album, ‘Tripla', which comes out on April 4th via Bella Union records.https://mikiberenyitrio.bandcamp.comMiki Berenyi Trio - 8th Deadly Sin (Official Video)Lush - Sweetness and Light (Official Video)Lush - Single Girl (Official Video)Lush - Ladykillers

1986 is undoubtedly one of the great years in music history, but one in which the chasm in alternative music grew. Especially for more established artists, 1986 represents the apex of the "BIG '80s" sound - glossy production, synth horns, Fairlights and DX-7s, gated snares, etc. Conversely, there was a new crop of guitar bands who eschewed these big budget sounds for concise, exuberant, noisy, scrappy pop music - brilliantly captured on NME's C86 cassette compilation. Discussing the songs of 1986 with us (and whose presence is certainly one of our biggest thrills to date) is Miki Berenyi from Lush, Piroshka, and The Miki Berenyi Trio! During their initial run from 1987 - 1996, Lush were one of the essential British bands of the era, releasing three seminal early EPs (collected on Gala) and three crucial albums that showcase the breadth of the band's formidable talents: 1992's Spooky, 1994's Split, and 1996's Lovelife (all on 4AD). Miki's recently released memoir, Fingers Crossed: How Music Saved Me From Success, is one of the most compelling and searingly honest books we have read. Often traumatic, often hilarious, Fingers Crossed peels back the layers of the public figure you thought you knew from the British weeklies to reveal a complex and gifted storyteller. The Miki Berenyi Trio is currently on a short tour of the US. Catch her if you can! The new track "Vertigo" is available on all streaming/digital platforms. Plus, there's a lot of swearing in both Hungarian and English. This one is definitely NSFW, kids. Special thanks to Paul Richison for the suggestion and introduction! Last year, Lush lead singer Miki Berenyi released one of the greatest memoirs ever written by a rock star, of which there are many. She grew up in the UK with a Hungarian dad and a Japanese mom who soon divorced with her mom becoming an actress and moving to Hollywood, while her dad remained a freelance writer living in relative squalor. Miki found her tribe in the local music scene which led to her and Emma Anderson forming Lush. After three solid albums and the tragic suicide of drummer Chris Acland, the band called it quits. Miki retells all of this in amazing detail in Fingers Crossed in 2022 as well as touring with Lollapalooza, working with Robin Guthrie, her new band Piroshka, and the inherent drama (sex, drugs and rock and roll) that come with being in a band. I can't recommend this book highly enough and this conversation is a revelation. Enjoy!  www.mikistuff.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

Today's guest is the singer-songwriter Miki Berenyi. If you were a teenager in the late 80s or early 90s with even vaguely alternative taste you can't have missed Miki and her band, Lush. Miki's distinctive look and bright red hair was an icon for anyone who didn't quite fit in. When the band split, Miki went on to build a new career as a - wait for it - magazine sub-editor. A job that on the face of it could hardly be more different than the rock'n'roll glamour of life on the road. Holidays! Maternity leave! Leaving at 6!But once you've drunk the Kool Aid, there's no going back and now 56 Miki still plays and tours with her band Piroshka.I met Miki in her north London kitchen to talk - and talk and talk! Believe me, this conversation goes EVERYWHERE! From revisiting her teenage diaries for her memoir, Fingers Crossed, to breaking free of the wrong kind of woman narrative and how the macho music industry made her feel “over the hill” at 30. We also discussed, the double standards around ageing and the joy of freeing yourself from the anxiety of youth.Note: Miki refers to someone called Nora a few times in this episode. Nora was her paternal grandmother. If you liked this episode, you might enjoy my interviews with Martha Wainwright and Tracey Thorn. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Fingers Crossed by Miki Berenyi and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Productions. Hello hello. I trust you all had an excellent Christmas? I got obsessed with The Traitors, ate my bodyweight in roast potatoes and had a succession of OCD induced mental health episodes. But it was pretty good on the whole! I read a tonne of books. Some good ones too. Though nothing that was better than Fingers Crossed, the debut book from Miki Berenyi, formally of Lush, now of Piroshka, the 90s flame haired British indie icon who revealed herself to write so brilliantly and so lucidly, penning a book that was, even in a year that swelled with excellent music related tomes, my favourite by some distance. It was a treat to talk to Miki about how that happened on this episode. Hey. Have you checked out my Best of 2022 mini-zine? Twitter - @jamesjammcmahon Substack - https://spoook.substack.com

Today we interview MICK CONROY from the 80s New Wave Band MODERN ENGLISH! We talk about the Mick's beginnings in music, touring, the band Piroshka, the 80s cruise, the upcoming Modern English album and more! ABOUT MODERN ENGLISH: Formed in Colchester, Essex, England, in 1979 by Robbie Grey (vocals), Gary McDowell (guitar, vocals), and Michael Conroy (bass, vocals), Modern English were originally known as The Lepers. The group expanded to "Modern English" when Richard Brown (drums) and Stephen Walker (keyboards) were subsequently added to the line-up of the band.    You can find our podcast almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.  We have a  YouTube Channel where you can find a version of this podcast with some video from the interview. They are best remembered for their songs "I Melt with You," "Hands Across the Sea," and "Ink and Paper". The group disbanded for a period in 1991, but later recorded in 1995 with some new members.   The original members reunited & reformed in 2009 and started to tour and work on new material.  After reforming with original band members and extensive touring, Modern English released their first new album in 30 years, "Take Me To The Trees" was finally released in 2016.  In 2020 The band had planned to tour and play their 40th Anniversary Tour Worldwide, but the global pandemic had different plans.  Modern English played the whole After The Snow album virtually online in its entirety throughout 2020.  2021 looks exciting, as Modern English are in the studio working on brand new material.   COPYRIGHT CLAIM: the songs Moonbeam, Grief, Gathering Dust, I Melt With You & Ricochet Days used with permission from Mick Conroy.

Lush special with Miki Benrenyi talking about life in music, Lush, reunions and her new musical outfit, Piroshka & much much more   The band formed in 1987 in London, initially named the Baby Machines (after a line in the Siouxsie and the Banshees song "Arabian Knights"), with a lineup of Meriel Barham (vocals), Anderson (guitar, vocals), Berenyi (guitar, vocals), Steve Rippon (bass) and Chris Acland (drums).[ Their influences were diverse; they were inspired by the garage rock scene of the Nuggetsseries, Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Beach Boys and the Byrds. Anderson and Berenyi had been school friends, having known each other since the early 1980s, and together published the Alphabet Soup fanzine. In 1986, Anderson joined the Rover Girls as bassist, and Berenyi joined the Bugs, also as a bass player. Neither band lasted long, and in 1987, they joined Barham and Acland in the Baby Machines. Rippon joined shortly thereafter, and the band members decided on a change of name to Lush, making their live debut at the Camden Falcon on 6 March 1988.[4][5] Barham left the band and later joined Pale Saints. Berenyi then took on lead vocal duties. Anderson said of the band's beginnings: "We were kind of punk rock in one way. We did think, 'Well, if they can do it, why the fuck can't we?' Basically, our idea was to have extremely loud guitars with much weaker vocals. And, really, the vocals were weaker due to nervousness – we'd always be going 'Turn them down! Turn them down!'"  Berenyi said, "We started by writing crappy riot grrl anthems... which was probably charming in a juvenile way. But there was a very rapid shift from the minute we started to write for records. The music, the lyrics became much more thoughtful and expressive, more important, really. I remember that change beginning when Emma wrote "Thoughtforms," it certainly made me think I needed to get my act together."
