Experience and years of coaching have taught Mike that it doesn't matter how everything else is going. If a business owner doesn't have the right mindset that allows them to make clear decisions from the right perspective, their business will never do as well as it could. On the other hand, even if you're starting from the bottom, the right mindset will get you farther than almost anything else in terms of being able to climb that latter to where you want to be. Today Mike explains how that's the case and why this is such an essential concept for you as a business owner to understand.  4:37 What You Focus on Grows  5:24 An Amazing Story to Illustrate This Concept 9:41 Covid  13:54 The Stories We Tell Ourselves Want to know more about these tools and what you can do to get out of your own way and improve your mindset? The Cardio for Fat Loss Myth and Other Menopause Fairytales

The Flipping 50 Show

If you’re looking at exercise choices thinking you want cardio for fat loss, let’s break that down. In this episode I’ll share: The myth came from … More calories burned during cardio than weight training The calories in calories out myth Why the myth still exists Doctors still give the advice Trainers still give this advice The advice isn’t ALL wrong... but without this… What We Really Want What happens when logical mind shuts off and your emotional one takes over We get very used to thinking about ourselves the way we’ve always thought of ourselves, and we get very comfortable with a certain body of knowledge What you really want when you head for more cardio The days when you had an hour to spend, reading a magazine, enjoying yourself, letting your mind wander, problems were smaller, we weren’t so connected (literally we went to the gym without our phones) More Cardio? Where seeking more cardio for fat loss actually backfires on you… Muscle breakdown occurs due to lack of estrogen (it supports muscle and when it declines you’ve got to have some other stimulus to replace it) Cardio without the adequate hormone levels further breaks down muscle – in part due to the greater increase in cortisol How cardio for fat loss especially of the endurance type (that zone 2-ish area) backfires Already tired? Already not sleeping? Already have inflammation? You’ll make it worse, much worse as you try to do more cardio > Zone 2 often becomes zone 3 Body Composition Body composition changes occur negatively with loss of muscle that is more fat due to the loss of muscle, then causes even more fat because of slowed metabolism Cardio for fat loss overall is not a girl’s best friend. At certain times it may be your nemesis in fact. When it is appropriate, low-to-moderate activity especially for women in post menopause is an important needle mover. That’s not so blatantly true for women in perimenopause. For both however strength should be moving into your 1stposition after 40. High intensity interval training in small doses is also important, when the time is right. The Problem with Moderate Exercise “Moderate exercise” was a recommendation born in the late 80s. It’s in fact a problem more than a solution. Imagine an equilateral triangle or pyramid. Divided into 5 zones of equal height. The bottom is largest and it’s your daily activities of life, even your yoga, your walk Truman around the block (okay, let’s be real, it’s so much more like pull Truman around the block) Zone 2 is the second layer, zone 5 the peak of the pyramid and of course zone 3 is smack in the middle. You’ve got the picture. Make them each a difference color of the rainbow if you’re imagining this with me. Zone Training Zone 1 and 2 have purpose. Zone 4 and 5 have purpose. Zone 3 is what I can no benefits zone. It’s usually a lazy effort at an interval or it’s a drift.. a cardiac drift (not to be mistaken as a heart attack). Cardiac drift means you’re doing zone 2 and you go longer and get more tired, dehydrated then you will find your heart rate rising and you’re now in zone 3. But not because you’re consciously working harder… just because you’re not staying in the zone you wanted that workout to be in. Every workout plan has workouts specifically designated at certain intensities. Who Does Zone 3? Zone 3 is never a place I’d put clients except for those who are going to do a ½ marathon for instance. And we purposefully keep them observing heart rate and drinking, eating, and slowing down in fact to complete workouts in a specific zone to accomplish the fitness level we want. If you haven’t worked with a coach one-on-one who was focused on fitness level instead of weight loss you haven’t experienced this. Here’s the news: if you focus on fitness, you have more optimal body composition. What You Focus on Grows If you focus on weight loss you often have more frustration and more weight. Is some of it psychogical ? I think a lot of it is psychological. We get what we attract, what we focus on. If you focus on weight loss however, your mind/brain doesn’t grasp the negative. It only hears weight. I’ve always preferred clients with goals, things they want to do, races, vacations, adventures… to those who want weight loss. Why? Because they’re most successful. So we create those kind of goals. We get them moving and outdoors. Doing things and dreaming about more things they want to do next. Strength, Not Cardio for Fat Loss Let me shift to strength momentarily. Strength on the other hand does not have the negative impact on cortisol. You’re likely not going to lift for more than an hour. In fact the workouts like those in my STRONGER program are 30-40 minutes average and some are much shorter. Quality, accepting that quality movement not quantity is most important is crucial to body composition change. Lift weights, increase lean muscle tissue. Increase lean muscle tissue, increase metabolism. Increase metabolism increase energy expenditure around the clock. That’s the long-term plan to fat loss that puts any plan of cardio for fat loss to shame. Your Turn I’d love to hear from you. Many of you have shared how you’ve shifted from cardio to weights, gained energy, and lost a few pounds while gaining lean muscle. What’s your story? Share it at flippingfifty-dot-com/cardio-for-fat-loss

Episode 186 What You Focus on ExpandsThe Law of Perpetual Transmutation If what you focus on expands let’s make damn sure we are focusing on things we want to expand. Do you want your waistline to expand? Do you want your bills to expand? Do you want your ornery neighbor to spend more time staring over your fence? Do you want the effects of COVID to have more power in your life? Nah….let’s think about things we do want.  What do you think of focusing on the things you CAN do and not the things you CAN’T do? What do you think about focusing on your strengths rather than your weaknesses? How much more fun and productive is that? What do you think about imagining your ideal life, in all aspects, and putting it out there to expand and come into being? If I focus on my ability to throw a great party and giving people a space to connect in (a strength), rather than beating myself up over not being a great promoter personality (not a gift I possess)- well, one is productive and the other destructive.  Let’s focus on things we want more of….because that’s how we get them. In 1847 Thomas Edison was born. He was easily distracted in school and he didn’t get good grades. Kids teased him and teachers called him “dim.” He was from a poor family growing up, so he would find ways to make money to buy supplies for his “lab.” He started a newspaper in his teens, the Weekly Herald, and he knew how to focus. Thomas Edison was known as - The Wizard of Menlo Park, and his inventions where called “Edison’s Miracles.” He could boast of over 1000 inventions. The phonograph, the electric lamp, the telegraph improvements, telephone work, batteries, to name only a few. How did he do it? As I studied Thomas Edison’s biography I think “focus” could be the word to best describe him. He was obsessed with his work and would sometimes work 100 hours a week. He didn’t sleep much, and while I don’t advise this, he left his wife on his wedding day to run to his lab and forgot to come back because of his focus on a project. Thomas Edison created a life story that was rich in creation, rich in money - he was a millionaire at age 40 - and rich in accomplishment. Now, he may not have had the best personal relationships because he didn’t focus on those. But he had the life he had because of what he focused on, because he never let that focus on his lab or creations waiver, even when he had failed repeatedly. We all know his quote, “Results? I’ve got a lot of results. I know 50,000 things that won’t work.” I share this as an easy example of focus. When we focus our time, our heart, our money, and our vision on a thing we can all move mountains. But it’s more than just hard work. Let’s talk about the Law of Perpetual Transmutation. - Law of Perpetual TransmutationAs 2020 launched I proclaimed that it was a year where I would study the laws of the universe. I focused on and got around to only one - it was the first one in Leslie Householder’s book Hidden Treasures. Much of what I’ll talk about regarding this law, aside from my personal experiences, come from the things she teaches. I highly recommend her work. What is the law of Perpetual Transmutation? In a nutshell, it simply means that everything is in the process of either coming into physical form or breaking down and going out of it.  The premise behind this law is one of creation. We actively create with our thoughts all the time. The things we focus on with real intent, belief, and consistency start to manifest and show up in our lives. There should be a big label stamped on our brains - a big red warning sign. “Dangerous if used in correctly.” Because this works regarding good and bad.  Let’s do a quick exercise - Look at your life right now. Whatever you have created - whatever you are dealing with - whatever you have, has been formed by your thoughts. You may not have brought all the circumstances into your life, but you have decided how to think about them and how...

What you put before you is what you focus on, and what you focus on expands. Mark Cole is joined by Chris Goede for the discussion portion of this episode to talk about John’s lesson. They remind us the importance of values-based leadership when so much is uncertain and hard decisions need to be made. He knows first hand how to overcome adversity and build a rewarding and fulfilling life and he is sharing his knowledge and wisdom with others to support them in creating the life of their dreams. Favorite Success Quote “There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own Soul. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.” ~Carl Jung Key Points 1. What You Focus on Expands What you focus on will expand, and if you aren’t intentional about what you are focusing on, you may wake up and realize that you don’t like the life that you have created. If you set the wrong goals and focused on the wrong things, you may wake up one day, wealthy, healthy, with plenty of “notches” on your belt and completely miserable. Instead of focusing on being wealthy, focus on first being happy. Instead of focusing on becoming the next Arnold, focus on being comfortable in your body and feeling alive and energetic when you wake up. Instead of focusing on sleeping with loads of women, focus on deeply connecting with many women. Be intentional about where you set your focus. If you aren’t, you are setting yourself up for failure. 2. Use Life’s Challenges as Stepping Stones Challenges are a chance for you to learn and grow. Instead of seeing them as this negative and terrible thing, choose to view challenges as an opportunity for you to mold yourself into the man that you want to be. See them as a way that you can strengthen yourself and equip yourself for the future. If you approach every challenge with this attitude, you will find that challenges become fun. They become something you look forward to, not something that you dread. 3. You are 100% Responsible for Your Life Until you accept this truth, you will never achieve success. If you have the technology to read this article and listen to this podcast right now and you are not where you want to be in life, it is your fault. End of story. If you are out of shape, in a miserable relationship (or no relationship), broke, or unhappy, it is your fault and no one else’s. You have the power in every moment to take responsibility for yourself and make the changes necessary to become the person you want. 4. Leave Your Comfort Zone Far Behind Life is not lived in your comfort zone. It is lived whenever you are out to sea with no shore in sight, no boat, and no clue what is going on. Life is lived whenever you do things that scare you half to death and make you question yourself. Whenever you are willing to take the leap, jump off the edge, and build an airplane on the way down. The more you get out of your comfort zone, the more you will uncover your own strength and the quicker you will achieve your goals. 5. You Must Have a Positive Mental Attitude  Look, life can suck. It’s that simple, there will be days when nothing goes right, when the world seems like it is conspiring against you to make your life a living hell. It is during times like these that your attitude is everything. You have to maintain a positive focus and be willing to see the good in every situation. If you can do this, any adversity will become something positive, and there is no limit to what you can achieve.

Trevor is the host of the Chapman Show, has sold multiple businesses for 7 to 8 figures before the age of thirty-five.   Time Stamped: [ 03:22 ] Results and the Hustle Mentality. [ 10:00 ] Lasting Change [ 12:00 ] Advance Business [ 19:38 ] Identifying Opportunity [ 24:58 ] Money and Significance [ 27:57 ] Legacy and Impact [ 36:36 ] What You Focus on Grows [ 42:00 ] Deliberate Intention [ 48:12 ] Reciprocation     Takeaways: We are in the midst of hype and hyperbole, a time where #beastmode #grind #hustle are top trending. There is truth in this focus, it creates the concept that what it all comes down to is hard work, grinding and the hustle, when, while those are necessary elements, if you want more deserve more. You deserve more by winning more. It’s not the virtue of the hard work that gives you the results, it’s winning. Professional athletes aren’t drafted because they work hard, they are drafted because they win. Often the ones who win do work the hardest, proving that it is a symbiotic relationship between the two. When we want to make lasting change our natural tendency is to add more things to our to-do list that we are already not getting to, to give our lives for complexity. I’ve found that when we want to make a true lasting change we should ask ourselves what will I no longer tolerate? By clearing the things that are stopping you from being able to achieve, clearing your obstacle. By clearing things you give yourself that option to grow into more of what you want. What we focus on grows, the grass is greenest where it is focused on. Wherever you are at, focus on what you want and if you want to deserve more, win more in what you are doing. Naturally more options will occur but there are no shortcuts, there are small quantum leaps but we earn everything we have.       Resources: The Billion Dollar Brotherhood and Facebook Group The Billion Dollar Body Live.
