We are taking a break for a few weeks and revisiting renovation stories from the past few years. This one is a cautionary tale with a happy ending, originally published as episode 88. Mitra Shahri is a well known and very successful attorney licensed to practice law in Oregon and California. After giving up on the idea of ever finding love, she bought her first ever property, a 2 bedroom 2 bath penthouse unit in a sought after downtown highrise in Portland Oregon with amazing views of river and mountains. She hired a general contractor with a great reputation that was highly recommended by several credible friends. A project that was scheduled to be completed in 3 months and for $55,000, turned into a 2-year nighmare that cost her over $250,000 and invited a lawsuit against her by a flooded unit 9 floors below her. The project came to a halt after she fired the second general contractor. Frustrated, she took over the project on her own. She hired several subcontractors to fix the mistakes and complete the project. Three months later, she owned a beautiful overpriced unit that she had to sell at a $400,000 loss a year later during the housing market crash. Why did she have to sell? Because she had fallen head over heels in love with the electrical contractor she had hired to finish the project. The two bought a house together after they were married and since have purchased several residential and commerical buildings which they have renovated acting as general contractors. Mitra is an author and a women's empowerment keynote speaker. She is the founder and CEO of Laughter-At-Law™, a humorous Continuing Legal Education Series for attorneys. Today's session is part of the new series: Revitalizing the Mind. We thought it would be great to explore trauma, and how the brain is affected. What better way to do that, than to speak to someone who has experienced trauma first-hand and share what she has learned about the brain. Today's guest is a trauma survivor. Please meet Angela Ardrey-Reynolds. She is here to talk about her journey that brought her to a point of asking, “Why am I still struggling?” In her quest, she discovered how trauma adversely affects the brain, causing it to not only rewire itself but to also shut down parts of itself. Angela shares: “I was looking for the courage again to have a voice in the world. Once I knew there was trauma, I gave myself a little more grace. There are answers to freedom. There are answers to unlocking these doors that held you so close.” Angela Ardrey-Reynolds is a professional writer and photographer, achieving years of publication of her stories and event coverage. She is known for her ability to create the beauty of another's soul through the power of her words. This gift led to many of her stories being displayed for all to see, as well as published on business websites. She sees her gift as an act of love for the people. She believes we all hold stories inside us, but simply need someone to be our voice. In an effort to serve others, she founded her community's first writer's guild, The Writers' Loft. It proudly celebrated its fourth anniversary in December 2022. In addition to being a storyteller with words and pictures, she is also a storyteller with her voice. Angela is a professional speaker with the National Speakers Association (NSA) and a member of the Keynotes and More Advanced Toastmasters club. She also serves as the Associate Dean of Professional Writing and Liaison for Toastmasters for the NSA Speakers Academy in Central Florida. As I've gotten older, I've realized mindset truly is everything. I spend a lot of time in my courses and programs helping people see things from a different perspective so that they can create change in their lives. I even had one client say, “I would have paid five times as much to see this much change in my life.” I can change the way I look at just about anything if I'm willing to let go of what my ego wants and that's the harder part. Shifting your mindset really is a spiritual journey.
