Worry only about today.”“Hmmmm, you're right, mom. Thanks!”.Natalie was very scared on the first day of school. She made sure she had all of the books she needs and lots of pen, pencils and erasers. She walked into the front of the building and went on her way to try and find her way to her classroom.Natalie got through her classes and met a lot of new people, nice people. Her classes seemed to go by really fast, and the day went by even faster. When Natalie got home, she was so excited. She told her mom that classes weren't all that scary;the students and the teachers weren't scary either.Natalie knew that the school work would be hard, but she felt good that the people she had met that day.She knew she'd have a good year.

Today we have two special guest's Natalie and Chris Martinez. Natalie Martinez is the CEO of Strong Women Strong Girls, a non-profit that teaches girls how to be strong young women. At age 25, Natalie became a single mother of two babies. During that difficult time in her life, she became a minister and found love in the church choir. She fell in love with musician Chris Martinez, they got married and are raising three children together. God certainly had a plan for them!Chris Martinez is a self-taught musician and producer with 22 years of experience. He enjoys collaborating and bringing out the best in independent artists. His philosophy can be summed up in this quote. “when words fail, music speaks”. Natalie Martinez is the CEO of a mentoring program that gives young girls skills for lifelong success. Natalie's heart is amazing, as well as her drive to give back to her community. One of her favorite quotes is "where there is a will, there is a way," and this strong woman never quits, especially on someone she loves.Natalie was a single mother when she met Chris; Chris was raised by a single mother and felt compelled to step in. When Natalie met Chris, Chris was presenting as a woman, his gender at birth was female. Once Chris fell in love with Natalie, he felt safe to transition to a man–who he was all along. Natalie always loved Chris for who he was. She fell in love with the person and didn't care what package he came in; she just loved his soul.Natalie and Chris share a deeply personal story that reflects strength, diversity, and transition. Kerry Brett, Natalie and Chris Martinez cover a lot of ground and topics include:What it's like to live in a transgender marriage. The importance of being open in love. How to be truly honest with yourself.Often we want stereotypes rather than finding the love that you need.Give yourself a chance, connect with the individual rather than the exterior. Why it's important to question conditioning. How to overcome misperceptions or judgements of others.Overcoming tradition, culture, and not being accepted.Open yourself up to love; be open because you never know what package that person may come in.Lose labels; things don't have to be in a box. Look for authenticity; people who dare to be who they are.If a person can't accept or love all of you-whatever shape or form that may be, well, that person isn't for you.In today's world, all we hear is that we are all in this together. It's important to focus on inclusion and society's acceptance rather than rejection or exclusion because we all want a sense of belonging, and we all deserve love. For more information about the non-profit Strong Women Strong Girls follow Natalie Martinez on www.swsg.org. When Natalie learned how to drive for the first time, she was running red lights and freaking out. Fingers, got drunk before his Driver's Ed final exam. Stole his father's car and wouldn't give it back. Instead he did reverse donuts in a mall parking lot, and got the vehicle up on two wheels, like some kind of movie stunt man. Anger, rage, and screaming were some of the things I dealt with when I was neck deep in depression. I should say, these are some of the things those around me dealt with. My depression comes out in waves of anger. Today's guest is Natalie Hixon who is a certified professional life coach. I am so excited to have her on the show today, because she specializes in helping women overcome destructive anger and burnout. The theme for season 2 was body, mind, and soul. I was upset because I didn't have a theme for season 3, but everything came together. Season 3 is really about cleaning out our hearts, homes, and souls. It's about ridding ourselves from junk and clutter that threaten our health and relationships. Burnout, self-destructive patterns, addiction, and anger will destroy who you are and what you're setting out to do. This is why I’m so honored to have Natilie on the show to share her story today. Show Notes: [03:39] Natalie lives in Montana. This is one of my bucket list states. [04:58] Natalie married Mike, her high school sweetheart. They have three daughters ages 15, 12, and 8 years old. They love living in Montana. Natalie has been there her whole life. [05:23] Natalie spends her days coaching moms who suffer with anger and burnout. [06:29] Growing up, Natalie knew she was an angry person. When she first got married, she noticed she was screaming at Mike. [07:13] She knew there was a problem when she was on the floor throwing tantrums with her two-year-old. [08:51] After a couple of years, Natalie took her daughter to a therapist and discovered she was the one who had the real anger problems. [09:39] When a child has an issue, it's often the mother who has things to work through. [12:01] Natalie would scream at her kids, throw things, slam doors, squeeze arms, and spank. She would cry that she abused her kids with destructive anger. [14:59] Melissa doesn't struggle with this now, because her kids are older, and she has had a lot of counseling. [17:19] Natalie is opening group coaching, because so many people feel like they are alone. There is a multitude of women who are beside themselves. [20:41] Natalie's journey started in the therapist's office. [23:13] Communicating how you are feeling helps your kids understand their feelings. [24:30] Anger is a natural human emotion. Destructive anger is what needs to be worked through. [25:36] Slamming doors, screaming, hitting, throwing things, or causing any type of pain is destructive anger. [29:08] Gaining control of anger and restoring relationships in family is possible. [30:17] When Natalie would blow up in rage, she would ask for forgiveness. This is the recovery piece. [33:14] Open and honest communication is how we restore, heal, and grow. [34:42] When mom's get angry, they can practice what they are learning and teach their kids how to get angry. [35:58] It's not okay to deny destructive anger in your life. Reach out for help. [37:31] Recognize how you feel after exploding. Create awareness. [40:03] Natalie loves pizza and rosé. [40:39] Friendship means love, openness, and sisterhood. [41:17] Her favorite movie is You've Got Mail. [42:04] I love women like Natalie who take their pain to change the world. When Natalie finished with college soccer she needed something to stay active and provide a competitive outlet. On a whim, she ran a local 5k mud run and placed 2nd female overall. From there, she was hooked. Natalie PR’d every marathon she ran over a four year period (with a best time of 3:11) before the 2019 Boston Marathon. On that day, however, her dream race became a nightmare. In this episode she details how she dealt with that disappointment, how she overcame an eating disorder that exacerbated a pre-existing heart condition causing her to have heart surgery, and how she uses her own experiences to help influence others as an active club soccer coach in Southern California. When Natalie had to train for the 2018 London Marathon in less than four months, it didn't take long before she realised that she was employing lessons she'd learned from doing No Contact and her initial struggle to create healthy boundaries. If you battle an inner critic that encourages you to do stuff only to switch things up and scare the bejaysus out of you about those same choices, or you wrestle with perfectionism or backtrack on changes you've decided to make because of the discomfort you experience, this episode is for you. At a young age Natalie took on the persona of newscaster, truly getting into the roll by carrying a hand made microphone constructed from aluminum foil and a paper towel tube. As time passed she switched her focus to PR, only to become disenchanted with what traditional PR entails. As we have found, life tends to be a series of loops, and for Natalie, this meant coming back to PR from another angle, podcasters. When Natalie found PR she knew it was a great fit. "I knew I was good at talking to people, networking with people, making connections, putting myself out there and representing brands or people or anything of the sort." While it's not always easy to see your skill sets, it pays (literally) to sit down and figure out what they are. The things that come easiest to you are exactly what someone else has difficulty with and will pay you to handle. Just because it's easy for you, doesn't mean it's easy. While finding her way between leaving the PR program at college and becoming a VA, Natalie studied recreational therapy. This allowed her to step back and take a look at the kind of life she wanted to live. Natalie realized that she wanted to make sure the living of her life came first. Set your priorities and then build around them. For full links and show notes visit compassopod.com/003
