They call themselves a drinking club with a cycling problem, and while they may enjoy gathering for beers post ride, the Manitou Spokes is a club full of heart and a passion for their Manitou Springs community and fellow cyclists.  The club began in 2009 and meets Tuesdays at 5pm from the start of daylight savings in May to the end in October, the Manitou Spokes offers 3 ride options each week: a Flat & Friendly Road Ride, a Hot & Hilly Road Ride and a Mountain Bike Ride, the Trail Trekkers. Following the rides, they rejoin to drink and dine together and support a different local brewery or bar. While you might find photos on Facebook, this group is only social in person, there is no website. The main way to connect with the Manitou Spokes is by showing up and getting on their email list. They meet from the back of the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month and an alternate location (disclosed in the club email) on 1st and 5th Tuesdays.   It was a lively multi-generational gathering of guests for our interview and very representative of the variety of ages and abilities in the club. Josie Lloyd discusses with Ivan six things which should be better known. Josie Lloyd, also writing as Joanna Rees, is the Sunday Times No.1 bestselling international author of over twenty novels and has been translated into 27 languages. Come Together, which she co-authored with her husband Emlyn Rees, was number one for 10 weeks and made into a Working Title film. Josie Lloyd recently wrote contemporary women's fiction novels The Cancer Ladies Running Club and Lifesaving for Beginners, which was a #1 Bookseller Heatseeker. Miss Beeton's Murder Agency is her first crime novel and is at https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/josie-lloyd-book-3-josie-lloyd/7270237. Isabella Beeton - she of the 'Book of Household Management' fame is still relevant today. Her weighty Victorian tome was full of common sense advice on how to run a household, but lots of it still rings true: like cooking a big meal on a Sunday and using the left-overs all week. Creative collaboration is a magical thing. When I first met Emlyn, my husband, he was my agent's assistant and we came up with a crazy idea to write a book together. There's no perfect way to be 'a writer'. And certainly staring at a blank screen is not necessarily a good way to start. It's breast cancer awareness month and having been through it - and having been inspired to write The Cancer Ladies' Running Club - it's important that people know that there are two types of breast cancer - lobular and ductal. Having breast reconstruction surgery is not the only option after breast cancer. I had a prosthetic breast made that matches my bumpy chest wall and it's a game-changer. More people need to know that this is a great alternative to surgery. Daily Qi Gong is amazing. As a busy mum of three with a successful career, cancer came as an enormous shock. I realised that I'd put my own well-being at the very bottom of my list. This podcast is powered by ZenCast.fm

We were emotionally hardened by some sleepless nights before recording this special episode! A couple months ago, a brilliant podcast listener on Reddit published her predictions that Spring Energy's Awesomesauce gel had incorrect calorie counts. Three weeks ago, those findings were confirmed by a German lab. This past week, everything exploded on social media with all of Spring's gels listing fraudulent calorie totals, roping us into a situation that we never hope to relive. This episode talks about our emotions. We are furious about the mislabeling. We wish we could go back in time and tell ourselves that nutrition labels can list fraudulent calorie totals, and we wish we could undo the health and performance struggles that so many runners have felt due to the egregious mislabeling. We are sorry for our connections to Spring years ago, and we love you all. At the same time, love has limits. This past week pushed us to our emotional edge. It demonstrated some of the problems with social media and a society that can chase clout and clicks over kindness and nuanced facts. Podcast listeners got us through, and we are emerging with more compassion, more courage, and fewer f's to give. As Megan wrote, "Love to you all, especially to any woman who has dealt with a small man: may you become larger in who you authentically are." And we threw in a bunch of fun topics! Other topics: reflections from sleepless nights, Pride Month joy, lessons from some of the highest energy expenditures ever studied, women in coaching, Unbound Cycling and the success of multisport athletes in bike races, Kilian's legendary dominance at Zegama, a study on CBD in runners, running club romantic connections, our love of Park Runs, and hot takes. We finish with some Listener Corner messages that kept us going in a really hard time. We love you all! Yes, ALL. The world can be dark and scary, especially on social media, and we hope that we can help fill your lives with as much light and as many calories as possible.
