Launch Your Box Podcast with Sarah Williams | Start, Launch, and Grow Your Subscription Box
You have the subscription box idea, now it’s time to build the audience who will actually subscribe to your box. Building an audience from the ground up can seem a little overwhelming. This week I’m speaking with Tiffany LeBaron Ray, founder of the Good Habit Box Co. with her good habits and practices she used to build her subscription audience from 6 at launch to 70 in a short amount of time! When Tiffany decided to start the Good Habit Box, she was already having success with her other Etsy brands. But she realized that the audience that she had built for Etsy were not necessarily compatible with her new idea. This gave her the opportunity to try some new ways to build her audience, and she found 4 ways that helped her get to where she wanted to be quickly. Have a Giveaway After creating a Facebook and Instagram page, she decided to pay for some ads to promote her box and drive people to her pages. “The very first thing I did was I made a mockup of my box: this is what my box would look like.” With her mockup she advertised a giveaway contest for people who liked her social media pages. Giveaways like this can build upon themselves and help generate interest in places you might not be able to reach through your personal or friends and family reshares. The way Tiffany did it does have a price tag attached to it, so make sure if you’re going to go this route to look for the results that you want before spending more money. Consistent Posting It’s so important that when you start your new pages and start getting an audience you consistently post to your page’s multiple times per day. “I would post things that would help my target customers: someone that's motivated, that's inspired. I want to help someone that makes big goals and small goals; someone that cares about those things.” Tiffany posted at least 3 times a day to keep her engagement up and attract anyone who might want to like her pages and would reply to any comments that came her way. Make Connections Chances are there are lots of other people out there with products you can either use in the future or who have similar ideas or values to yours. Making connections with those people can pay off when you feature their products on your page, or they feature yours on their pages. “When I would post a picture of my box and all the pretty things in it, I would take the time and tag all of those shops, I tag them I give them a shout out. And what that's done is some of those small shops even some of the bigger companies have in turn reached out to me and given me a shout out on their page.” Partner with an Influencer A great way to reach an engaged audience is to partner with an Influencer for an unboxing. Finding an influencer who shares your values and caters to the same type of audience that you’re looking to build requires a little research and due diligence, but it can pay off in great ways. “I found this influencer on YouTube, and what caught my eye was that she would do these massive unboxings of boxes that she's never seen before. She also caught my eye because she was so friendly and had almost 100,000 followers on YouTube.” Tiffany sent her a box and a little while later she had people emailing her asking if she still had the box that she had sent to the influencer. She gained quite a few followers from that one box she sent out! What an amazing way to start this next chapter after the first 50 episodes. I was recently a guest on Project Me with Tiffany Carter and I knew immediately that I needed her here on Be You. I am honored to have spent over an hour on this interview with her. It felt less like an interview and more like conversations with a great friend. Tiffany Carter is the host of Project Me podcast and a business coach for entrepreneurs. She takes the mystery out of making BIG money. She uses a magnetic combination of her clear-cut communication style that she developed as a TV news journalist, her business savvy and proven strategies as a multi-millionaire entrepreneur, and her intuitive ability to connect with women on a deeper level, to uncover what’s blocking you from achieving your dream life. This multi-millionaire entrepreneur went from a life of self-destruction to success, despite the odds being entirely against her. Tiffany’s mission runs deeper than helping women create wealth; her bigger purpose is to help women find their worth. In today’s episode, Tiffany shares things that will stop you in your tracks. She shares what she endured as a young child and young woman. Her story is not an easy one but it is also one of triumph and success in business and in life. Forgive the buzzwords, but no one embodies the words authentic, real, and “Zero fucks given” quite like Tiffany and she is the perfect guest to kick off the next 50 episodes. Show Notes: [3:50] - Jill admires Tiffany’s ability to be so real that even though Jill has really just met her, she feels like she already knows her and trusts her. [4:43] - Tiffany admits that she used to be very arrogant. She explains that it was not because she thought she was great but that she didn’t. [5:20] - Explaining her rough background, Tiffany demonstrates how she had to fake confidence in order to survive in the world. [6:36] - In her youth, Tiffany would embellish stories to make her more likeable to others and more interesting. [7:23] - Tiffany had imposter syndrome before it was even a recognizable term. She was cool and confident on the outside and wore her fake demeanor as a badge of honor. [8:31] - Tiffany tended to be very abrasive, “like a bulldozer,” but what was behind that false exterior was exhaustion and a desire to end it all. [9:29] - Now, Tiffany refuses to be fake even if it means being uncomfortable with being real and authentic. [10:17] - Jill acknowledges and thanks Tiffany for her openness about her experience. [11:24] - At the time that Tiffany was ready to end her life, if she had, people who knew her would have been shocked. Depression and suicidal thoughts oftentimes come with a confident facade. [12:02] - Tiffany felt alone her entire life and after having worked through a lot of her experiences, she is paying it forward by opening safe houses for individuals who have been victim of sex trafficking. [13:03] - The conscious decision to “put on armor,” got Tiffany to a point of survival because in her situation, no one was coming to save her. [14:18] - Another piece to Tiffany’s exhaustion was her inability to let love into her life. She thought she could let love in, but she had not truly known how to. [15:04] - When Tiffany felt that she was letting someone in, she attracted people who were incredibly toxic and that repeated the experiences of her childhood. It was a subconscious recreation. [17:16] - For a long time, Tiffany did not put it together that she was the common denominator when it came to dating. She was bewildered that she was a magnet for toxic people which continued the cycle of her lack of self worth. [18:40] - At times when Tiffany saw others in happy relationships she would wonder why she couldn’t have that and she would become judgmental. This all fed self loathing. [19:33] - Using the examples of famous figures and celebrities who had killed themselves that were seemingly very happy, Tiffany explains that she was happy when she had decided that she would do it. [20:40] - Tiffany shares that the reason she did not go through with it was an act of divine intervention. She shares the story of how she went to an AA meeting to support her partner and the moment that saved her from her decision. [22:53] - A couple of women who she met at this meeting mentioned another program called Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families and wrote down the closest meeting for Tiffany to attend. [24:15] - Tiffany describes how she wound up at the meeting the woman wrote down for her on the day she planned to kill herself. [24:58] - This was the first time Tiffany realized that there were other people like her. This was validating for her and enough for her to postpone her plan. [25:55] - She kept going to the meetings, continued to postpone, and seeing that there were other people willing to “peel it back,” saved her life. [27:12] - Tiffany speaks to those who send her DMs with messages that come from a good place, but may be more for their own needs than hers. [28:19] - Jill references a previous episode on “nice girls giving but who are really takers.” You can listen to that episode here. [29:58] - Tiffany had the idea for Project Me down to the little details for 10 years before she did it. She is thankful that she didn’t start it at the beginning. [31:53] - They take a moment to talk about Jill’s “Sally the Influencer” and Tiffany’s “Polly the Influencer.” There is a lot of good in this space, but also a lot of posers. [34:17] - Tiffany describes the strategies that influencers use that she does not like and the ones that don’t repel her. It is all about the energy. [36:22] - When Tiffany started on Instagram, she was shocked by how fake everything was and saw right through it. [38:37] - It is easy to fall for the “sexy answers.” Tiffany admits that in moments of being naive, she has fallen for something fake. [40:11] - Tiffany’s strategy is never to abandon yourself to be like someone else for success. [42:09] - Tiffany came into this space having been incredibly healed with a lot of recovery under her belt, but admits that in the beginning she felt that she needed to be “newscaster Tiffany.” [44:07] - By copying others in order to emulate their success, Tiffany started feeling exhausted, heavy, and started dreading making content. This was a big signal to her. [45:54] - When Tiffany saw the hole in the market that she knew she could fill with her real self, her business exploded. [48:00] - It is hard but important to know that in order to serve at your best, you are going to have to upset some people. [48:45] - The old Tiffany would trigger people on purpose, but now the reasons someone is triggered by her is because she knows she might trigger you and she’s okay with that. [50:22] - Tiffany shares a humorous story of wearing her bathrobe to an event. [51:48] - Although most of her comments from viewers and followers are positive, there are some negative comments as well. Because Tiffany has done the inner work, they don’t hit her the same way. [53:08] - It is also uncomfortable to see someone else be uncomfortable but that’s okay. The old Tiffany would not have wanted to talk to anyone like Jill. [54:42] - Jill admits that she was intimidated by Tiffany just a few months ago and explains why and what happened. [56:11] - Tiffany describes how her story is atypical from the usual “starting out poor and winding up rich story.” Tiffany grew up in a very wealthy family. [57:46] - The “cool girl” gang that Tiffany describes repels her. She explains that like attracts like and what her ideal client looks like. [59:37] - Tiffany does a lot of speaking events and understands the good behind things like #girlboss, but ultimately doesn’t feel attracted to that type of person. [61:34] - The money is not why Tiffany shows up. The reason she keeps showing up is because someone needs to see her looking real and not caring about what other people think. [63:19] - Tiffany shares the story of an influencer years ago showing up without makeup and in a bathing suit and gets very emotional because she needed to see that. [66:01] - Jill got a negative rating on the podcast and was initially triggered and upset about it. But then she realized that it didn’t matter. [67:54] - Tiffany does go through her DMs daily and replies to all of them. Reach out to her. [69:01] - Tiffany describes what she does for her clients and who she can help. I know there was something in this episode that you were meant to hear. Let me know what that is. Thank you for being here today with me on our healing journeys. Do you suspect that your partner is using porn? Have you discovered pornographic material on his phone or computer? These 4 tell-tale behaviors of pornography users will validate you and help you understand how his behavior is harming you. Tiffany Barnes join Anne Blythe on the free BTR podcast to share her insights and experience regarding the ways pornography users abuse women. Read the full transcript below and listen to the free BTR podcast for more. Pornography Users Gaslight Victims Gaslighting is a universal tool of abusers. By distorting the victim's reality, porn users can avoid accountability and shift blame onto the victim. Gaslighting is also known as crazy-making. When Tiffany would confront her abusive ex-partner about his pornography use, she was gaslit: He just tried to make me feel like I was being crazy, and I did. I questioned it a few times; am Icrazy? Is this just me being ultra-paranoid or something? Pornography Users Attempt To Normalize Their Porn Use Often, pornography users employ tactics to make their sexually depraved behaviors appear normal to avoid accountability and make the victim feel "prude", boring, or immature. Some of the ways that pornography users attempt to normalize porn are: "Hiding" pornographic material in plain sightCalling pornographic material "art"Saying things like, "Everyone does this"; "I'm a guy, that's what guys do"; or "No other woman would have issues about my porn use."Saying that they use pornography to help the marriage/relationship become strongerBlaming the victim by saying things like, "If you would have sex with me more, I wouldn't do this." Pornography is NOT a healthy and natural piece of human sexuality: it is abuse and exploitation. When victims can ground themselves in this truth, their partner's manipulation won't work any more. Pornography Users Dehumanize Their Partners Many women report being photographed, videotaped, or even live-streamed by their abusive partners. Women are sexually coerced, degraded, and physically harmed when phonography users demand sexual contact. Pornography itself is objectification: selling women's bodies for money. When men choose to view pornographic material, they are by default objectifying other human beings. This rarely stays compartmentalized. Pornography users dehumanize their partners by:Fantasizing about themAsking them to perform sexual acts that the victims are not comfortable withAsking victims to view pornography with themDemanding or guilting partners into having sexual contactFilming, photographing, or otherwise sharing sexual photos of victims, with or without consent Pornography Users Sexually Coerce Partners Any time a man has sexual contact with his partner without fully disclosing his sexual history, including pornography use, he is guilty of sexual coercion. Healthy sex is consensual. Women cannot give informed consent when men withhold key information about their own sexual behaviors. This is sexual coercion, a serious form of sexual abuse. If you think you are being sexually coerced by your partner, ask yourself: Have we ever had sexual contact when he had used phonography but hadn't told me? If the answer is yes, then you are a victim of sexual abuse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkPH4zkxJYw Betrayal Trauma Recovery Supports Victims of Pornography Users At BTR, we understand the confusion, fear, and devastation that women experience when their partner is using porn. That is why we created the Betrayal Trauma Recovery Group: so that women can have access to multiple, live sessions every day. The BTRG gives women the opportunity to process trauma, ask questions, and share difficult feelings in a safe place. Join today. Full Transcript: Welcome to Betrayal Trauma Recovery, this is Anne. When Tiffany speaks, it’s as if the world itself stands still so as to gleam a little bit of her wisdom. Which is fitting because Tiffany’s website is Tiffanyspeaks.com. Seriously Tiffany is such an incredible human being and has such valuable insights on what sales is really all about. Everything stems from self-care. Tiffany has worked at many notable companies and has made millions and millions of dollars for them. She has now started her own company coaching small and large businesses about the energy behind sales and how you can thrive. Our conversation today waxed philosophical quite a bit even though we didn’t plan it that way. We went down some deep roads and explored what it means to truly value yourself. Honestly we are both trying to figure who needs to invoice who for the therapy session we had. Hope you enjoy this podcast!
Starting a Counseling Practice with Kelly + Miranda from ZynnyMe
When Tiffany began her business journey in 2016, she knew she wanted to build a private practice, but also wanted to do impact work on the side that would truly scale her income, and thus heytiffany.com was created! Tiffany spoke with us about the various sociocultural variables and barriers that therapists must overcome to not only make a positive impact in our clients lives, but to live the life that we want with the income we deserve.
Tom from Lynwood has written for help with his girlfriend Tiffany. He’s upset because before COVID hit they planned to take a summer vacation together. But after 3 months of quarantine, Tiffany says when they are allowed to travel she is going on a girls’ trip with her friends instead. Tom thinks that ain’t right – she should want to spend their first time “out in the world” together and he is really hurt that she doesn’t want to. When Tiffany comes on she emphasizes how much she loves him but that they have really, really, really been in each other’s pockets all this time and she is honestly a little tired of seeing him every day. She says it’s healthier for couples to spend a little time apart and wants him to go take a trip with his boys. Some of the P1’s agree with Tiffany and think Tom is too clingy (and can’t wait to get away from their own spouses!) but others think she and her girl’s may have something - or someone - a little “extra” planned!
On today's show, Tiffany opens up about the revenue streams that make up The Budgetnista's seven-figure business. How does an influencer really make money anyway? At this point, The Budgetnista's origin story is pretty legendary. When Tiffany lost her job after the 2008 recession, she started The Budgetnista, a financial coaching business, while living on her sister's couch and piecing her own financial life back together. Through word-of-mouth she got new clients looking for help getting their budgets on track but there was just one problem — she often felt too guilty to charge them money for her services, knowing they were already struggling financially. "I wanted to help as many people as possible without being a financial burden on them," she says on today's episode. Starting a business without wanting to charge fees wasn't exactly the most obvious business choice, but she was determined to find a way to make it work. A decade later, The Budgetnista is now a multi-seven-figure business, despite Tiffany's mission to continue giving value away to her community for free and to never to charge the people who need help the most more than they can afford. "I took the long meandering route to entrepreneurship and I took the route of building trust, building community and the truth is now 10 years in ... When Tiffany and Laura started this book they had no idea how much valuable information and advice they would receive and strive to relate to their listeners. One of the best ways to show your appreciation for your customers and provide value to them is to give them your all. Tiffany Southerland is a career confidence coach who works with both young, and experienced, professionals who are ready to make their career mark on the world and who want to increase their fulfillment in the work they do each day. She helps individuals evolve, thrive, and perform to the best of their ability. A business cannot exist without clients, so it is crucial to have a solid relationship with your buyers. Tiffany serves individuals one-on-one in a group setting and believes that, if they are not happy - if they have not improved or realized results - she has not done her job. It is, therefore, very important for the success of her business that she continually better herself in order to do better for her clients. The goal is not to simply make more money but rather to help the clients. A salesperson who pushes her own agenda over the needs of her clients is likely to lose those clients. The natural by-product of happy clients, however, is increased sales. Tiffany recalls failing to launch a group program twice because she had locked herself into reaching a specific number. She was focused on that target instead of the service she wanted to deliver. Once she removed the target and focused on the experiences, services, and opportunities she wanted to provide for her clients instead, she began to see results. Her level of stress was replaced with positive energy. People began to react differently to her as a result and her new goal was reached. Our unique gifts Tiffany knew that she wanted to build her business for the sake of changing people's lives and she wanted to leave a legacy. She had to realize and believe that she was capable of doing so. She needed to believe that she was uniquely gifted to provide her services in the way her clients wished to receive it. Tiffany was serious about reaching her goal. She knew she was capable of making an impact in a way that only she was qualified to do. Tiffany believes we are all uniquely gifted because our lives are all different. We came into our particular roles in a way that no one else did, even if we are doing the “same job.” Once you internalize that concept and apply the difference to the way you do business, you begin to walk authentically and in your own unique voice. Regardless of the metrics or the sales targets, if you can show up authentically, it becomes easier to do anything. You are no longer working to fit somebody else's mode. You will be perceived differently. People can tell when you are trying to be something you are not. Instead of thinking about making a sale, think about serving a need. If your product or service can meet the need, the entire perspective and experience for both the buyer and the seller shifts. Rather than ‘just selling,' you are literally meeting a need. Comparison is the thief of joy It is easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others in the same field and to doubt your ability to provide any unique service. Realize that you don't have to reach a million people. Rather, you need to show up and impact just those people who need to hear your voice. We live in a world now where some people have thousands of followers. But if you have 10 people behind you - who really believe in you - that is a foundation upon which you can build everything else. Tiffany does not claim to be a celebrity by any stretch but she has a podcast audience that shares and believes in her. She, in turn, benefits when they share and connect her to others. It is impossible to be grateful and to take advantage of what you have if you are too busy comparing your achievements to others. Don't worry about what other people have. Be appreciative of what you have. Have the right perspective and learn how to make the best from what you have been given. When Tiffany embraced this change, she was able to launch her business successfully. She was free to focus on her clients as opposed to focusing on herself and the bottom line. A call to serve Tiffany strongly believes that, regardless of industry, we are called to serve first. Focusing on metrics, for example, serves no purpose other than to appeal to our vanity. As soon as Tiffany changed her focus to the creation of a great product that would change the career trajectory of other women, she was able to truly connect with her clients. It was no longer the work she did for herself; it was the work they would do together that made the business successful. The feedback from her clients has been wonderful. They feel heard. They feel that they are getting so much more out of their experience with Tiffany than they expected. For Tiffany, that is the only result she really needs. Her clients register to improve their interviewing skills, or resumes, but they leave knowing how to clearly articulate what it is they are really good at doing and what they want in their careers. They are able to figure out, and seek out, the right opportunities with increased confidence. Tiffany says the change has been phenomenal and the impact extends well beyond career confidence. The work self and the personal self will eventually collide so they have to be congruent. Don't go to work as an employee. Go to work as the individual that you are. It will give you the clarity to determine what opportunities are for you, and which ones are not. Have faith not only in the qualifications on your resume but in your ability to deliver. You have to believe in yourself. Focus on service. Take the pressure off yourself by focusing on the people around you instead. Focus on the company you work for, your colleagues, and your clients. When the focus is on them, the pressure you used to place on yourself no longer exists. “Give Them Your All” episode resources Tiffany's next ‘Elevate your Career Academy' will launch in March. This week’s episode covers breast implants, and how they might be compromising your immune system. When Tiffany received her implants, the doctor told her that there were only two side effects to consider.
