Kim's inspiring journey from a direct support professional to a dedicated nurse highlights passion, determination, and the importance of mentorship. Along the way, an appreciation for the power of data analytics and its impact has emerged. Her diverse healthcare experiences and academic achievements showcase resilience and commitment. Listen to learn how her story exemplifies the impactful role of data analytics in improving patient care and outcomes in healthcare."Deciding to become a nurse was challenging but incredibly rewarding. I embraced every opportunity to grow. My journey taught me that dedication and support can lead to meaningful impacts in patient care." – Kim LeakKimberly Leak BSN, RNInfection PreventionistKimberly Leak has been a registered nurse for over 4 years and resides in New York City. She began her registered nursing career during the COVID pandemic, where she had to simultaneously learn crisis nursing and the basic nursing skills of a new graduate. After a year as a staff nurse in Suffolk County, NY, Kimberly embarked upon travel nursing, completing assignments at University of Virginia, as well as assignments in Spokane, WA; Columbia, SC and Buffalo NY. She briefly worked at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City, but resigned due to unsafe and substandard working conditions, which ultimately culminated in a nurses' strike. During her course as a travel nurse, Kimberly noticed disparities amongst the electronic medical records utilized at her various assignments. This is what ultimately sparked her interest in health informatics. She has experience with various electronic medical records systems. She currently is a nursing home infection preventionist—a job that requires a lot of data collection and analyzation. Kimberly wants to use her experience in the nursing home to improve resident outcomes via improved health informatics in the long term care setting. The process of creating a new MASLD nomenclature for the condition formerly known as Fatty Liver Disease was a multi-year process with unique challenges and complications. Three leaders in the process, Maru Rinella, Jeff Lazarus and Meena Bansal, and patient advocate Mike Betel join Louise Campbell and Roger Green to discuss the process, transition and rollout.00:00:00 - Surf's Up: Season 5 Episode 3Co-hosts Louise Campbell and Roger Green sit with Maru Rinella, who co-chaired the New Nomenclature process, Jeff Lazarus, who oversaw the entire Delphi process, Meena Bansal, who played a key role and co-moderated the 2023 AASLD session, and patient advocate Mike Betel to discuss the entire process from inception to today and beyond.00:03:57 - Meet Meena BansalDr. Meena Bansal, Division Chief at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, discusses how she became involved in liver disease and her current research interests, and shares one fact about herself that might surprise you. 00:05:47 - GroundbreakerPanelists share one piece of good personal or professional news from the previous week.00:08:22 - Characterizing the Nomenclature ProcessMaru and Jeff discuss the original goals of the process and how focus broadened and shifted throughout.00:16:02 - How the Delphi Process WorkedJeff describes the overall process. Roger asks about people who chose not to participate at the outset, which leads to a discussion about the overall rate of participation. Roger then asks what might have worked better, which leads Maru, Meena and Jeff to discuss groups they wish had been better represented. 00:27:05 - The Role of Allied Health ProvidersLouise asks why Allied Health Providers did not play a larger role throughout the process. Maru and Meena differentiate between providers' roles in the early process and the mechanics of rolling out to the patient community.00:29:38 - Focusing on the RolloutRoger's question about the rollout leads Jeff to focus on some of the key early stage events. Jeff and Maru go on to discuss the high level of participation from key journals.00:33:32 - Early AwarenessMike Betel brings a piece of data on physician awareness from the pre-test of a study he is conducting in Canada, which serves as a conduit into the entire topic of who is aware of the nomenclature today and how knowledge will spread over time. 00:38:56 - The New Message for Patients Louise notes that the upcoming UK effort to bring VCTE screening to primary care will provide an effort to define and characterize the disease for patients. Meena comments that providers have done this informally for years, but while the message used to be that the patient "just has fat on the liver," this nomenclature will formalize the disease, remove "just," and focus the patient on therapy.00:39:15 - MetALD - A New Disease in the SLD FamilyRoger states that in his mind, the newly defined disease MetALD is a major positive outcome of the process. Maru, Meena and Louise each describe ways this new definition will aid diagnosis and treatment, Mike notes that the message still must be tailored for each patient. 00:43:55 - Implication for Diagnostics The group discusses the idea that while the nomenclature will not lead to new diagnostic tests, it might lead to increased and more appropriate use of the tests that exist.00:48:25 - The Future of the NomenclatureRoger asks the group where this process will be in a year and five years. Answers vary.00:51:58 - Grading the Process So FarRoger asks panelists how they grade the process to date. Grades are high although, as Jeff notes, they are grading their own work.00:55:27 - Business ReportNews on audience metrics, the upcoming Question of the Week, next week's epidemiology discussion and this week's Vault conversation

SHOW NOTES In this week's Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by Dr. Simarta Brennan. We delved into the fascinating journey that led Dr. Samara to become an author. Her new book, "The Parts We Don't Talk About," is a compelling read that delves into the world of healthcare from multiple perspectives. What inspired her to write this book was her unique position as both a physician and a patient, having been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and being a mother to a child with congenital heart disease. It's a powerful story of navigating the healthcare system, advocating for loved ones, and finding the path from surviving to thriving. We also dug deep into the world of multiple sclerosis, a condition that Dr. Samara herself faces. She emphasized the importance of understanding the diversity of how the disease can manifest in different individuals. This awareness can help break down preconceived notions and facilitate better communication between healthcare providers and patients. Dr. Samara shed light on the mysterious cause of multiple sclerosis, which remains unknown but likely involves a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. She stressed that open-ended and individualized communication is essential for those dealing with the disease. The emotional aspect of living with chronic illnesses was another significant topic. Dr. Samara highlighted the role of grief in this process, emphasizing that acceptance is a powerful tool in moving forward. Lastly, we discussed how friends and family can support someone dealing with a chronic illness. It's all about creating a safe space for individuals to share their experiences, being patient, and offering positive and constructive support. After Friday's midnight deadline, the United Auto Workers went on strike against the Big 3 automakers of Ford, GM, and Stellantis, marking the first time in history the UAW has gone on strike against all three auto companies. As of this recording, 12,700 auto workers have walked off the job at three plants: a Ford plant in Wayne, Michigan, a GM plant in Wentzville, Missouri, and a Stellantis plant in Toledo, Ohio, and there are potentially many more plants to follow. While here in New York City, postdoctoral workers with the UAW at Columbia University and Mt. Sinai Hospital are fighting to transform the working conditions for postdocs in Higher Ed. Tonight, we are joined in-studio with Brandon Mancilla, Director of UAW Region 9A, and Chris Voila, an auto worker and UAW member, to hear the latest about this historic auto strike. We will also hear from PJ and Andrea, postdocs with the Columbia Postdoctoral Workers Union and Sinai Postdoctoral Organizing Committee, on their respective contract fights and how postdoc workers are ready, if necessary, to strike. Next up with Bryan is the newest President of the BIAMD Board, Julie Karp. Julie Karp is a psychologist and provides individual and group counseling and cognitive rehabilitation to individuals who have sustained a brain injury. Occasionally, she will work with family members of individuals who have had a brain injury. Counseling often focuses on dealing with the different emotions and life changes that occur after a brain injury. Julie is also a Certified Brain Injury Specialist. She started learning about brain injuries when she was in graduate school but began providing more services when she started working at Sinai Hospital in 1992. Sinai has a dedicated brain injury day program as well as outpatient brain injury services. On a personal note, when Julie was 8 years old, she was in a car accident and sustained a hairline fracture of her skull. Although there was not much focus on concussions/mild TBi's at that time, she is sure she was concussed. Julie lives in Baltimore and really enjoys seeing other parts of the world; her most recent trip was to Cambodia and Malaysia. She is a distance swimmer, having completed several 6-mile swims. She loves playing and snuggling with her German Shepherd. Summary:With the pandemic mostly behind us, thoughts of those we lost remain. Victoria Noe realized the loss of numerous friends and shares how we often are unsupported in this grief. Despite how close or important these relationships were, they are not usually recognized as valid. Notes:Deep into her fourth career, St. Louis native Victoria Noe is a Chicago-based award-winning author, speaker and activist with two degrees in theater. Her Friend Grief series - the result of a promise she made to a dying friend - recognizes the importance of friendships in shaping our lives. Noe's long-time HIV/AIDS activism then led her to write F*g Hags, Divas and Moms: The Legacy of Straight Women in the AIDS Community, the groundbreaking book that honors the women who changed the course of the epidemic. An accomplished public speaker, she has presented at ACT UP/London, Mt. Sinai Hospital, the Muse and the Marketplace, BookExpo America, and Open Hand/San Francisco as well as libraries and bookstores around New York state and the Midwest. During COVID, she presented regularly and led writing groups online. Noe's newest book, What Our Friends Left Behind: Grief and Laughter in a Pandemic, about people who have grieved a friend during the pandemic, will be published in June, 2023. Brews and Tiny Teeth, The Unfiltered Pediatric Dentistry Podcast
Dr. Richard Marn is a dual board-certified physician in anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology. He trained at NYU and Johns Hopkins Hospital, and was on Mt. Sinai Hospital faculty as one of their pediatric anesthesiologists for 11 years. He works in New York providing pediatric in-office sedations for pediatric dentists and oral surgeons through his company New York Medical Anesthesia. Dr. Marn is also unique because his wife Dr. Jessica Marn is a fellow pediatric dentist! Drs. Richard and Jessica Marn recognized that medical education for dentists and oral surgeons is fragmented and incomplete. They co-founded an education company, Blue Pacific Medical Simulation, that teaches dental offices how to properly respond to medical emergencies in their office. In this episode, we review why pediatric dentists and their teams often aren't well trained or equipped to handle in-office anesthesia emergencies when things go wrong. We discuss common problems, review a recent pediatric dental anesthesia death in the news, and talk about how Dr. Marn's company runs simulations to train dentists on how to be better prepared. More info on Dr. Marn and his services can be found at the website below. www.bpmedsim.com www.nymedicalanesthesia.com

A child to Holocaust survivors, Zosia Gorbaty candidly shares the story of how her parents survived the most bleak and hopeless times of their lives. They were literally walking to their deaths at a death camp and somehow miraculously found each other thanks to her father's whistling of a few notes of a familiar song. They were able to escape. The story is amazing. Zosia's father was a concert pianist and her mother was a linguist who spoke many languages. Not surprisingly, Zosia trained in piano as a young girl and also learned to play the Obo in school. After she graduated from college, she traveled Europe by herself where she realized how many freedoms and privileges women in the United States had compared to these other countries. On her journeys, she experienced a devastating incident in Greece which she explains further in the podcast. Zosia shares her commitment to martial arts, her instructors and styles practiced, and how she met and fell in love with her husband of more than 40 years, GM Zulu. Today, she is a 9th degree in Zujitsu Ryu. Along with her expertise in martial arts, she holds a master's degree in Physical Education from NYU as well as numerous fitness certifications and a yoga practice. She worked as a Rape Crisis Advocate at Mt. Sinai Hospital. She conducts many self-defense and creative martial art seminars. At 73 years old, Zosia is a vibrant martial artist who practices martial arts daily with her husband, including her favorite weapons - a wooden short staff, a walking cane, and a stone bead necklace that she created herself. She enjoys gardening and Chinese brush painting and she and her husband cherish their dog, aptly named Sifu Silverfoot ("Sifu"), who brings them so much joy. Don't miss this fascinating podcast from a truly passionate and personable martial art woman, Zosia Gorbaty. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/andrea-harkins/support

When we think of the names of women who have seemingly defied the aging process, who comes to mind? Helen Mirren, Cate Blanchett, and Judy Dench. These are just a few women who have decided to celebrate their natural beauty. We admire them for their confidence, talents, and sense of style. But in a culture that's obsessed with youth, it can be difficult to embrace the aging process and be proud of the skin you're in. Today's guest is Dr. Naeemah Ruffin, also known as “the face fitness doctor.” Naeemah is is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Mt. Sinai Hospital and the CEO and founder of Bellantz, which specializes in personalized face fitness with expansive range of exercises tailored to tone the facial muscles to create a more youthful and symmetrical facial appearance. She also has Clinical Skincare line that's formulated with plant-based natural and organic ingredients to repair, restore, and revitalize the skin. In today's conversation, we'll talk about specific facial exercises to lift and tighten certain areas of your face that have decreased muscle tone over time. There is evidence-based research that supports facial exercise as a natural facial rejuvenation in addition to correcting facial symmetry, especially in those with Bell's Palsy. We'll also talk about facial expressions that are working for and against you. And of course, we can't talk about the face without chatting about skin care. Dr. Cheryl Harding, PhD, is Professor Emerita of Psychology at Hunter College, City University of New York and of the Doctoral Program in Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience, The Graduate Center, City University of New York. She originally trained as a behavioral neuroendocrinologist, studying how hormones acted on the brain to alter behavior and how an animal's behavior affected its hormone levels. In 2006, she became fascinated by early reports that mold exposure caused brain fog, interfering with normal cognitive function. A study from Mt. Sinai Hospital in NYC that found that the symptoms of mold-exposed patients could not be distinguished from those of patients with mild to moderate traumatic brain injury made it clear that experimental research was critically needed. There was no known physiological mechanism to explain how mold could cause all the symptoms which mold patients reported. So she retrained in psychoneuroimmunology examining how the immune system affects brain function and behavior, obtained grant funds, and carried out a series of experiments in mice. These experiments demonstrated for the first time that mold exposure did cause brain inflammation with resultant behavioral dysfunction, that nontoxic mold stimuli were also a danger, and that innate immune activation appeared to trigger this cognitive and emotional dysfunction.Transcript: PENDING Find us on Linktree, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and YoutubeNeed help navigating your mold injury without breaking the bank? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC), in 2018, 13% of the US population was Black and African American, but 42% of new HIV diagnoses in the US were from Black and African American people. This discrepancy is not new. On June 5, 1981, the CDC first published an article in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) titled “Pneumocystis Pneumonia” that suggested that there might be “a cellular-immune dysfunction related to a common exposure that predisposes individuals to opportunistic infections such as pneumocystosis and candidiasis” to explain a number of infections they were seeing among gay men. This early identification of HIV/AIDS as a disease of white gay men colored the response to the epidemic. As gay men organized AIDS education and support networks they built organizations staffed by white volunteers and situated in gay neighborhoods in major urban centers. Because of racism and segregation many of those gay neighborhoods were largely white, and the education and support campaigns didn't reach the Black and brown communities that were also affected by the disease. In response, African American AIDS activists formed their own organizations from the beginning of the crisis. African American AIDS activism was diverse and creative from the early days of the pandemic, and it continues today, but it's often been missing from popular media and historical writing about AIDS. In this episode, Kelly briefly tells the background of African American AIDS activism and interviews Dan Royles, Assistant Professor of History at Florida International University and author of To Make the Wounded Whole: The African American Struggle against HIV/AIDS, which was recently named a Finalist in the 2021 Museum of African American History Stone Book Award. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. Episode image by Tobe Mokolo on Unsplash.
