It has easily been the worst year ever, but we have all had some wins this year. What is one good thing you will take from the past 12 months? Tanea: Kids do really want to learn and they have made me feel appreciated Ryan: Everyone involved with education is incredibly resilient. Teachers are working their behinds off and are making the best of a bad situation. Kids are dealing with all of these transitions (in person, virtual, synchronous, asynchronous) like champs. We are all learning what is truly important. Lee: We have had to innovate on the fly, and hopefully some of the good will stick around post-pandemic. The grandson of an opera singer, Michael Blume took to music at an early age, first learning the piano and trumpet and ultimately touring with an a cappella group while attending Yale. Yes, the it was the Whiffenpoofs. But the singer found his true voice after moving away from academia. Supporting himself in New York first through SAT tutoring and later wedding gigs, Blume has since become and idiosyncratic front man, blending genres and peppering in performance art. The Smiffenpoofs originated in 1936 after a group of Smithies attended a Yale picnic where the Whiffenpoofs performed. The Smithies were so impressed by the Whiffs' camaraderie and musicality that they decided to form the first women's collegiate a cappella group in the nation, modeling it after the Whiffs and adopting a similar name in their honor. As the story goes, it was on November 23, 1936, that Smith College President William Allan Neilson gave his official approval of the group, gifting them with a leather-bound journal in which to record their history. We were honored to sit down with the Poofs at the end of February to see what this amazing group of women are up to these days. This week we are joined by military historian Dr. Lynette Nusbacher to discuss three 70’s films set in the Napoleonic era. We start with Sergei Bondarchuk’s expensive and Soviet-approved epic Waterloo (1970), pitting scenery-chewing Rod Steiger against Christopher Plummer and his eyebrow, with surely the most bodies on screen we’ve ever seen. Joe’s choice of Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon (1975) is a gruelling three hours of beautiful tableaux and a somewhat blank performance from Ryan O’Neal in his quest to reach the gentleman sphere. We finish with Ridley Scott’s first feature film The Duellists (1977) visually inspired by Barry Lyndon, narratively inspired by Joseph Conrad, following two cavalry officers honor-bound into repeatedly duelling throughout the course of Napoleon’s campaigns. Also: The world still revolves around Orson Welles. Napoleon wasn’t as short as we’ve been led to believe. 200 year-old spoilers. Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Lynette Godwins Napoleon. “By God, I’ve lost my leg, sir.” Napoleon always wins, except when it rains. Eyes Wide Barry Lyndon Shut. The Whiffenpoofs. Lynette pulls focus over both of us. The 1595 Club. The Mark 1 eyeball. It all goes a bit Jane Austen. Green Baize Vampire spotted. We play a game of “Yes, Commander” and somehow we don’t mention Sharpe once. Lynette corrects ABBA.
