Professional Wrestling's Territory System In 1948, after decades of competing with each other, an agreement was made to bring all the territories into one national alliance, forming the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). This also brought forth the first recognized "World Heavyweight Championship," where Lou Thez became it's first champion. Despite the agreements that Lou would be champion, many promoters wanted to keep their main stars looking strong. They often employed shoot matches (non-fixed matches) for the top talent to beat Lou in championship matches. The matches were able to succeed due to two main factors: the rise of television in the United States, and the implementation of The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956. Signed into law by President Dwight Eisenhower, the Highway act created 41,000 miles of new highway in the United States over a 10 year period Traveling to live shows became more feasible for the public due to the new highway system. This coincided with the boom of the wrestling territories allowing more eyes on the matches. Also, the rise of television networks caused a need for more content, and wrestling was cheap programming for them to buy. During this time the idea of gimmick wrestlers also became more and more popular. Instead of just being strong men who competed for titles, you would see characters who were defined by one major aspect. These could include heels (bad guys) who took on the evil foreigner gimmick, such as the Iron Shiek. However, the most popular character of the early days of the territories was George Wagner, more commonly known by his stage name, Gorgeous George. George was not a physically imposing man at five foot nine. He would come out in an effeminate outfit, mock the crowds, and most importantly followed his motto, "Win if you can, lose if you must, but always cheat!" George's natural charisma and natural ability to draw massive "heel heat" (audience hatred of the character) made him the ideal villain for the growing television audiences. Eventually the NWA would begin to show cracks as many of the promotions viewed the entity as a corrupt tyrant holding back innovations in the business. Due to this growing disdain, promotions would leave the NWA. The biggest impact would be from the American Wrestling Association (AWA) and the New York based Capitol Wrestling Corporation (later renamed the World Wide Wrestling Federation ) agreement to leave NWA at the same time. The WWWF's exit would be a huge blow to the NWA as the New York promotion not only held one of the biggest venues, Madison Square Garden, but also one of the highest population densities in the nation. This caused NWA's loss of a huge market. The WWWF also had Bruno Sammartino, often regarded as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. Bruno's popularity would be the beginning of the WWWF becoming the biggest promotion of all time and evolving into the company we know today as the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

"POLISH POWER"Ivan Putski-(Jozef Bednarski) Ivan Putski is a former professional wrestler and bodybuilder, best known by the nicknames "The Polish Hammer" and "Polish Power". Putski is a former WWF World Tag Team Champion with Tito Santana. He had a notable feud with Superstar Billy Graham over the WWF Championship, which led to many pose-downs, arm wrestling bouts, and long matches between the two. Other rivals included The Iron Sheik, Ivan Koloff, and Jesse Ventura, who would refer to Putski as "Puduski" when commentating for the WWF. Putski was the first Polish wrestler to perform in the WWF (now WWE). Putski wrestled his last match for NWA New Jersey as he defeated King Kong Bundy by disqualification on February 27, 1999. Early career (1968–1974) Putski won the NWA Texas Tag Team Championship with Jose Lothario twice in 1973.[1] Putski was a fixture on the Dallas-Ft. Worth wrestling scene and was one of its most popular personalities. He was routinely the feature act at The Sportatorium, a wrestling-only arena in an industrial section near Downtown Dallas. Putski's act consisted of being a happy-go-lucky, often aloof buffoon, who would "miraculously" pin his opponent. Putski was often introduced as a former concentration camp survivor, only adding to his sympathetic appeal to audiences of all ages. In mid-1974, Putski worked with the American Wrestling Association.[1] It his time in the AWA that Putski also first clashed with Superstar Billy Graham. Prior to leaving the AWA, Ivan dropped most of his weight by getting into bodybuilding. Ivan kept himself fairly trim at the 215 - 220 pound mark. World (Wide) Wrestling Federation (1974–1987) Putski debuted in the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) in 1974.[2] While in the WWWF, Putski feuded with many wrestlers, including Bruiser Brody, Stan Hansen and Ivan Koloff.[2] On June 25, 1976 at Showdown at Shea, Putski defeated Baron Mikel Scicluna.[1][5] Four years later on August 9, Putski was again victorious at the next Showdown at Shea, defeating Johnny Rodz.[1] He also resumed his feud with Superstar Billy Graham. On October 22, 1979, Putski teamed with a young rookie Tito Santana to defeat Johnny and Jerry Valiant to win the WWF World Tag Team Championship.[1] They held the title for six months before losing it to The Wild Samoans.[2] Putski worked in the renamed World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in the 1980s, primarily feuding with Roddy Piper and Sgt. Slaughter. He took a hiatus from wrestling in 1986. He soon returned to the independent circuit, also making occasional appearances in the WWF as a jobber to the stars. His last high-profile feud was in 1984 with Jesse Ventura. His final appearance was in 1987 teaming on television with Junkyard Dog and Superstar Billy Graham in tag team matches. He then retired from the sport. Other promotions (1981–1986) He began to slow down his career in the 1980s.[2] He won his last tag team championship in May 1981, teaming with Wahoo McDaniel to defeat Dory Funk, Jr. and Larry Lane for the SWCW World Tag Team Championship.[1] In November 1985, Randy Savage defeated Ivan Putski in the opening round of the Wrestling Classic.[1] Return to Wrestling (1991-1992) After his run in the WWF, several promotions, and his semi-retirement, Putski returned to the ring in 1991. Putski made an appearance for International World Class Championship Wrestling teaming with his son, Scott to defeat the Masked Iraqis. Also made an appearance for Global Wrestling Federation in 1992 teaming with Gary Young against Tom and Mike Davis in a no contest. Return to WWF (1995, 1997) In 1995, Putski was inducted into the WWF Hall of Fame class of 1995 by his son, Scott.[2] The father-and-son team returned in July 1997 to defeat Jerry Lawler and Brian Christopher on Raw is War, in what would be Putski's final match. International Championship Wrestling (1996) In 1996, he joined International Championship Wrestling, as a face. He won several matches in the company, and he was billed as a tough guy.

CLOVIDleaf (Cloverleaf) Radio's host, "The Host with the Most" "The King of the Quarantine" welcomes longtime (retired) Professional Wrestler, Davey O'Hannon! As he once said in a ringside interview, Davey O'Hannon has a "Ph.D. in professional wrestling." During the 1970s and 80s, O'Hannon wrestled in territories across the United States and Puerto Rico, and toured internationally in Japan, Canada, and Hong Kong. In more than 3000 matches spanning an 18-year ring career, O'Hannon faced off with a who's who of opponents in shows at Madison Square Garden and other major arenas. Today, O'Hannon is considered one of the top "workers" of his generation. "If there was a Hall of Fame for 'workers,' Davey would be inducted in one of the first classes," said Tony Vellano, IPWHF Vice President. In professional wrestling terms, this distinction means that O'Hannon possessed the rare ability to consistently deliver high-quality matches with a diverse set of opponents. Most of the time, O'Hannon performed the role of "heel," or villain, and fans would delight in seeing him defeated by their heroic "babyface." Though he had a talent for drawing "heat" from wrestling audiences, Davey O'Hannon is undoubtedly a good guy and friend to the IPWHF. "He is a true gentleman," Vellano said, reflecting on their two decades of collaboration. O'Hannon was an early and active supporter of Vellano's work, serving on the board of his first pro wrestling museum (formerly in Amsterdam, NY) and contributing significantly to the success of that project. O'Hannon has continued to advocate for a distinguished hall of fame for his fellow professional wrestlers, which he will now help to create with the IPWHF. A native of New Jersey, O'Hannon knew he wanted to be a pro wrestler at seven years old. He remembers being in the audience when Bruno Sammartino defeated Buddy Rogers for the world championship at Madison Square Garden, and how that moment inspired him to pursue his own wrestling carer. "I started bugging the promotors," says O'Hannon. That's when he met Arnold Skaaland, an agent with Capitol Wrestling, a New York-area promotion that operated the World Wide Wrestling Federation and later became WWF/WWE. "Skaaland told me to go to college and then come back and see him," O'Hannon remembers. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jianetwork/support

One of us is MIA but that doesn't stop the remaining two from discussing the "face" of the company from 1963's World Wide Wrestling Federation to the modern day. We cover all the classics and discuss the importance of having a star drawing a crowd. 4 obvious names are surrounded by some surprises, some transitional & some "filler" Champions are a controversial topic. Born in Tennessee, Jimmy Valiant started wrestling in 1964 as Big Jim Valen, which morphed into Handsome Jimmy Valiant when he wrestled for the World Wide Wrestling Federation in the 1970s. He soon formed a dominant tag team with his "brother," Johnny Valiant. One of the dominant wrestlers in Memphis, Valiant feuded with the likes of Jerry Lawler and even recorded a song, "The Ballad of Handsome Jimmy." In the 1980s, Valiant morphed once again into "Boogie Woogie Man" Jimmy Valiant. Today, Valiant runs Boogie's Wrestling Camp in Shawsville, Virginia.
