In this webcast, former senior intelligence and national security officers explore headlines noting that intelligence reports provided to the Trump White House had laid out the likelihood of a pandemic with unnerving clarity - and one even noted worrisome signs of a rapidly spreading virus in Wuhan in November (ABC: https://bit.ly/covid19wuhanintell) But the challenge for this or any administration is not awareness as much as prioritization, as former National Intelligence Council analyst Rod Schoonover put it in a previous Sustain What conversation: “In my world in the intelligence community, I was often very proud to be in one of the only parts of the government that either had the platform or the freedom to clearly state some of the risks. In the 2019 Worldwide Threat Assessment, it lays out language that's very, very, eerily prescient of this moment. But it also landed on, I think, page 21. So, yes, it's a risk, but we clearly don't have it calibrated quite right.” http://j.mp/coronaschoonover In a fresh chat with Schoonover and Alice Hill - a former National Security Council official and biodefense expert now at the Council on Foreign Relations - we explore what will be needed for an administration with any political orientation to do better.

This is Scott Amyx with today’s Climate Change Flash Briefing. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration suggest that the Midwest flooding could become the worst ever recorded with more 200 million people at risk for flooding. Heavy rain this spring will make conditions worse in most states with moderate to major flooding expected in 25 states up to May, making the worst flood season in US history. According to the National Weather Service, the current flooding is a preview of what’s to come this spring, potentially causing worse flooding than the historical floods of 1993 and 2011. A Department of Defense report from January 2019 warns of risks from climate-related events and the Worldwide Threat Assessment of the US Intelligence Community also warns that climate change poses extreme weather and floods that are threatening our infrastructure, health and water and food security.

This week concerns about Trump's foreign policy were front and center, as the regime rolled back sanctions against a Russian oligarch, and withdrew from the Cold War-era Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty — both seen as victories for Putin. The Financial Times reported on a previously undisclosed one-on-one meeting between Trump and Putin at the G20 just months after Helsinki. Congress rebuked Trump's foreign policy again this week in a piece of legislation drafted by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell over Trump's withdrawal of troops from Syria and Afghanistan. Heads of U.S. Intelligence agencies testified before the Senate on their annual “Worldwide Threat Assessment,” revealing findings in sharp contrast from Trump on Iran, ISIS, and North Korea, as well as the southern border. Trump reacted by castigating his appointed agency heads, then later inviting them to the Oval office and blaming the media instead. Zack, Jenn, and Alex break down a new intelligence report that directly contradicts President Trump’s views on key policy issues from ISIS to climate change. The report caused Trump to blast his own spies on Twitter, writing that “Perhaps Intelligence should go back to school!” — a shockingly public attack that illustrates just how broken US foreign policy is under Trump. On Elsewhere, the group runs through a medley of interesting topics they couldn’t cover during the month of music segments, a lightning round that ranges from Russian post offices selling beer to a rogue Japanese city mascot. We dropped in clips of Trump on North Korea, Iran, climate change, Vladimir Putin, and ISIS. This oral history of how Obama and his intelligence officials talked about Osama bin Laden is worth your time. Yes, Trump basically called US spies Nazis one time. The evidence that both the intelligence community and the Bush administration screwed up Iraq intelligence before the 2003 war is quite overwhelming. The BBC has covered the new availability of beer at Russian post offices. Here’s the New York Times article about Chiitan that Zack referenced.
