With ADHD, it can be difficult to regulate our big emotions and feel calm, with everyday triggers causing us to feel dysregulated. We can see this show up in young children, but it can be shameful and guilt-inducing when we're adults. This week's guest is Dr Tamara Rosier, author of one of my favourite ADHD books, Your Brain's Not Broken. Dr Tamara has been a college administrator, a professor, a leadership consultant, a high school teacher, a national public speaker, and an ADHD coach. Through those adventures, she has developed valuable insight into ADHD and how it affects one's life. As founder of the ADHD Center of West Michigan, she helps individuals, parents, and families develop an understanding and learn practical skills to live with ADHD effectively. Her book Your Brain's Not Broken provides strategies for navigating the powerful, significant emotional aspect of ADHD healthily. During this week's episode, we spoke about Our big emotions, being embarrassed and the shame we have around our emotional regulation. How to regulate our overwhelming emotionsPrefrontal cortex 'butler' - how it calms and helps with sequencingThe limbic centre is our anger, frustration controller'Living on the grid' - four quadrants, solve it gridBurnout from constantly being in the red zoneMaking intentional choices to help our health and stress management. In this week's episode of Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast, hosts Nikki Kinzer and Pete Wright interview Dr. Tamara Rosier about motivation and ADHD. Dr. Rosier, author of "Your Brain's Not Broken," shares insights from her experiences as an ADHD coach and professor to uncover motivation strategies for those with ADHD.As Dr. Rosier explains of those living with ADHD, "There is really no research explaining our success in the modern world." Her book aims to send a "love letter" to those struggling, affirming that "You're okay. And I know it feels hard for you, but you're still okay."The hosts dive into the complicated relationship between ADHD and motivation. Dr. Rosier notes that while ADHD can make people appear self-centered as they struggle to survive, most "are incredibly sensitive" and "heart forward." Pete adds that ADHD allows people to "forget the important things"—like basic needs—while seeking self-actualization. Dr. Rosier agrees this makes success especially difficult, as "easy things are very difficult" for those with ADHD, yet they still accomplish much.To build motivation, Dr. Rosier suggests first assessing your values—why something matters. She coaches Nikki to uncover beliefs like "I should enjoy cooking" that create pressure. Next, acknowledge the difficulty but willingness to do hard things. Tie actions to values, not beliefs that demotivate. Dr. Rosier advises imagining your future self; what actions would serve them well? For her, laying out morning clothes helps future Tamara. Finally, notice existing successes instead of dismissing them. Despite feeling inconsistent, for example, Pete already walks his dog each and every morning. While discussing motivation, Dr. Rosier exposes thought patterns that sabotage us. Beating yourself up rarely helps. Instead, start by naming emotions and difficulties without judgment. Accept dissonance between wants and responsibilities. Motivation takes self-awareness, values exploration, and celebrating every step forward. Here are a few key takeaways: How ADHD impacts motivation and success Steps to take to understand and build motivation How to shift from self-judgment to self-acceptance Strategies to uncover motivation blocks like beliefs The importance of aligning actions with values Ways to celebrate small consistency wins With compassionate insight, Dr. Rosier exposes why motivation is so complex yet possible. This inspiring episode explores practical strategies to overcome motivation challenges. Anyone seeking to understand themselves and build motivation from within will find this a thoughtful listen.Links & Notes Learn more about Dr. Tamara Rosier Follow Dr. Tamara Rosier on LinkedIn Get the book: “Your Brain's Not Broken: Strategies for Navigating Your Emotions and Life with ADHD” by Dr. Tamara Rosier (00:00) - Welcome to The ADHD Podcast (02:49) - Support This Podcast: Become a Patron at Patreon.com/theadhdpodcast (04:22) - Introducing Dr. Tamara Rosier (14:28) - Separating Feeling from Motivation (18:18) - Motivation and Self-Actualization (26:20) - Ego and Self-Centered Worldview (31:57) - Tying Motivation to a Value (33:36) - Coaching FOR Nikki! Today Heather has a fascinating discussion with Tamara Rosier, PhD about the connections between ADHD and body image issues and eating disorders. Heather explores this topic as an extension of personal research she's been doing about her own undetected ADHD type symptoms and traits. Dr. Rosier walks Heather through several ways that ADHD connects and may contribute to body image issues and eating disorders including: *How the ADHD (neurodivergent) brain operates from the limbic system instead of the prefrontal cortex, making our bodies stay in a "fight or flight" response, which makes us constantly feel threatened or unsafe. *How ADHD often is found in high functioning women. *How ADHD can make us perfect victims for narcissists. *How Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria connects to body image issues and potential eating disorders or disordered eating. *Why the hyper vigilance of the ADHD brain may cause us to overdo it in exercise. *Why the neurodivergent may experience the feelings of being "all or nothing" - Either working too hard/overworking or doing nothing at all. *How ADHD responses are similar to trauma responses, though some have both operating at same time. *Why being curious about what's going on in your brain is helpful. The topic of this podcast is about the feelings many with ADHD feel about having a different brain. Many with ADHD go as far as to feel that their brain is broken. That's what many say to themselves. Tamara Rosier, Ph.D., is the founder of the ADHD Center of West Michigan and the author of the book, Your Brain's Not Broken. The book has received much praise from many in the ADHD community. Tamara wants people to understand that ADHD is just a part of you and does not define you. Dave asks Tamara why many people with ADHD feel their brain is broken. They ask questions such as “Why am I like this? Or why do have this brain?” “Why can't I be normal?” These are common messages we feed ourselves as individuals with ADHD. It's not uncommon and the frustration that comes with having ADHD can feed this. By the same token, Dave asks Tamara why many with ADHD have a default negative type of thinking? For example, “I have ADHD so I can't do that.” she discusses what those of us can do to begin to change our negative way of thinking. Tamara also spends an entire chapter in her new book on setting boundaries. It's an essential part of managing your life whether you have ADHD or not. But even more important if you're an adult with ADHD. She explains why. In chapter 12 of her book, Tamara lays out practical ways to manage and thrive with ADHD. She discusses these briefly and tells people why it's important to be practical. Building a solid foundation for managing your ADHD is one of the most important things you can do. Her book, Your Brain's Not Broken, provides strategies for navigating the powerful big emotional aspect of ADHD in a healthy way. During this week's episode, we spoke about Our big emotions, being embarrassed and the shame we have around our emotional regulation How to regulate our overwhelming emotions Prefrontal cortex 'butler' - how it calms and helps with sequencing Limbic centre being our anger, frustration controller 'Living on the grid' - four quadrants, solve it grid Burnout from constantly being in the red zone Making intentional choices to help our health and stress management. Such as diary management, delegating our butler tasks and borrowing people's butler (neuro typical) brains Learning not to cram and live fueled by adrenaline and cortisol The importance of prioritising deep cleansing sleep Sleep is so important for our health - ADHD symptoms are exacerbated when we don't sleep enough. Learning to relax and transition from a busy day to downtime and sleep. In this episode of the No BS Sales School with Walker McKay, Walker talks to psychiatrist Dr. Raynia McGee about a mental condition that Walker himself lives with: Attention Deficit and HyperActivity Disorder (ADHD). They go through the tell-tale signs of ADHD, its causes, and how people living with the condition can best address it. Dr. Raynia and Walker also talk about some of the ways that managers can deal with employees that exhibit behavior typical of ADHDs, and how people with this condition can be some of the most creative and effective problem solvers with the right motivation and management style.HIGHLIGHTSWalker and Dr. McGee eyepatch storyGetting married and entering medical school in her 30s What is ADHD and how to know if you have it What people living with ADHD can do to help themselvesAre ADHD and Anxiety linked?Appropriate ADHD medication will not change your personalityA manager's guide to dealing with people with ADHD Things to avoid when you have ADHD When you should seek professional mental helpQUOTESI'm working twice as hard and I am barely keeping up with everyone else.' But smart, intelligent, creative just as everyone else. It's just that your ability to manipulate that information that you have is different."Dr. McGee: "One is structure, structure, structure. Because if your day is organized and you know what you're doing then it gets easier to not be distracted by what's shiny, what's loud, what is coming in. I would also keep reminders on your phone, or whatever you're using to remind you that things need to get done." Dr. McGee: "Learn your best learning style. For instance, some of my ADHD patients who have businesses, or are in college or whatnot, they realize that they learn better verbally versus sitting down reading. And they learn better when they're up and moving versus being seated and having to consume information. So once they learn that then they can say what works best for me is to listen to my lecture over and over again while I'm doing something else in my room. Staying busy but still internalizing the information." Dr. McGee: "Anxiety is the most common comorbid mental health disorder that goes along with ADHD. Up to 20% of patients who have ADHD have some aspect of anxiety associated with it. Which will sometimes make it difficult to tease out what's the anxiety versus what's the ADHD." Dr. McGee: "If we get it right, you should really feel like you're not taking anything at all. In the sense that you're going through your day, you're being productive, you're doing what you need to do. I mean, you still forget things or still get upset or anxious about things. But that's normal. But you know, you should not feel medicated.".Where to find Dr. McGee and other resources:Website: https://www.blackpeopletreat.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/raynia-mcgee-446a526a/Your Brain's Not Broken: https://www.amazon.com/Your-Brains-Not-Broken-Strategies/dp/0800739426The ADHD Effect on Marriage: https://www.amazon.com/ADHD-Effect-Marriage-Understand-Relationship/dp/1886941971Where to find Walker:LinkedInTwitterInstagramFree training coursewww.walkermckay.com
