In this week's episode of The ADHD Podcast, hosts Pete Wright and Nikki Kinzer explore the nuances of empathy for those with ADHD. Their guest, Dr. Tamara Rosier, recently presented on "The Unexpected Downside of Empathy" at the 2023 International ADHD Conference. Dr. Rosier, founder of the ADHD Center of West Michigan, explains that while empathy is often seen as a virtue, ADHDers may experience it in a more complicated way.Dr. Rosier outlines three main types of empathy: emotional, cognitive, and compassionate. Typically, employing all three types leads to well-regulated empathy. However, she notes that ADHDers frequently operate at extremes, either overly empathetic or non-empathetic. This imbalance leaves them vulnerable to several "downsides" of empathy.First, ADHDers may experience misplaced empathy, making excuses for other's inappropriate behavior. Second, getting stuck in emotional empathy can lead to empathetic distress and fatigue from taking on too many others' burdens. Dr. Rosier hypothesizes this stems from the ADHDer's desire to avoid rejection sensitivity.Third, ADHDers may underfunction by shutting down empathetically. Fourth, they may overfunction by overcompensating for other's lack of empathy. Finally, manipulative people can exploit the ADHDer's emotional empathy to gaslight without triggering their cognitive empathy.ADHD wiring leads to a complicated relationship with empathy. This episode is a BIG one! I sit with Dr. Tamara Rosier, ADHD expert and author, about her book, Your Brain's Not Broken: Strategies for Navigating Your Emotions and Life with ADHD. We talk about what is ADHD, the 'gap' between ADHD and our society, how ADHD isn't a strength or weakness but actually a cognitive difference, how dopamine impacts ADHD, nature as a regulating source for ADHD, the three types of ADHD (hyperactive, hypoactive, and combination), the impact of shaming from parts of ourselves and society, and how anxiety and avoidance can come from protector parts that are trying to manage ADHD. We get deep in this discussion as we share personal stories from my childhood and how ADHD impacts us both in past and present. Dr. Tamara Rosier is founder of the ADHD Center of West Michigan, where she and her staff work with individuals with ADHD, and their families, to learn strategies and develop new skills to live effectively with ADHD. In this episode, I reconnect with Dr. Tamara Rosier, founder of the ADHD Center of West Michigan and the author of “Your Brain's Not Broken: Strategies for Navigating Your Emotions & Life with ADHD.” Tamara's experiences resonate strongly with me because we have similar stories of struggling as educators before we discovered our ADHD and became coaches. We compared notes about how coaching changed our lives and made us better people. Tamara talked about how she measures success, the process of writing her book, and whether ADHD is a “gift” to the people diagnosed with it. Dr. Tamara Rosier and I had a really deep and interesting conversation. We both agreed that we all need to realize that people are different, we are all human and we are not perfect. We spoke about people with ADHD and it was very important to hear the symptoms that people have with ADHD. Tamara Rosier, Ph.D., lives in West Michigan and is the founder of the ADHD Center of West Michigan, where she and her staff work with individuals with ADHD (and their families) to learn strategies and develop new skills to live effectively with ADHD. If you have ADHD or don't know if you have ADHD, your brain doesn't work the same way as a "normal" or neurotypical brain does because it's wired differently. This difference in circuitry is not somehow wrong, incomplete, lazy, or shameful. However, it does present you with significant challenges like time management, organization skills, forgetfulness, trouble completing tasks, mood swings, and relationship problems are among the chief hurdles they jump through on a daily. Well, here's the deal… When someone has ADHD, their brain is legitimately wired differently and focuses on different things than someone would expect them to. Therefore, it does present those diagnosed with ADHD with significant challenges around typical things that others do with ease of breathing. In Your Brain's Not Broken, Dr. Tamara Rosier applies her years of coaching others to explain how ADHD affects every aspect of your life so that you can finally understand why you think, feel, and act the way you do. The result? Practical tools that can dramatically improve your personal and professional life. The topic of this podcast is about the feelings many with ADHD feel about having a different brain. Many with ADHD go as far as to feel that their brain is broken. That's what many say to themselves. Tamara Rosier, Ph.D., is the founder of the ADHD Center of West Michigan and the author of the book, Your Brain's Not Broken. The book has received much praise from many in the ADHD community. Tamara wants people to understand that ADHD is just a part of you and does not define you. Dave asks Tamara why many people with ADHD feel their brain is broken. They ask questions such as “Why am I like this? Or why do have this brain?” “Why can't I be normal?” These are common messages we feed ourselves as individuals with ADHD. It's not uncommon and the frustration that comes with having ADHD can feed this. By the same token, Dave asks Tamara why many with ADHD have a default negative type of thinking? For example, “I have ADHD so I can't do that.” she discusses what those of us can do to begin to change our negative way of thinking. Tamara also spends an entire chapter in her new book on setting boundaries. It's an essential part of managing your life whether you have ADHD or not. But even more important if you're an adult with ADHD. She explains why. In chapter 12 of her book, Tamara lays out practical ways to manage and thrive with ADHD. She discusses these briefly and tells people why it's important to be practical. Building a solid foundation for managing your ADHD is one of the most important things you can do. You can find Tamara's new book here: https://www.tamararosier.com/

In this episode I speak with Tamara Rosier, Ph.D. about her new book, Your Brain's Not Broken: Strategies for Navigating Your Emotions and Life with ADHD. In Your Brain's Not Broken, Tamara Rosier, Ph.D., founder of the ADHD Center in West Michigan, shares how those with ADHD can create new thinking habits, identify unhelpful thoughts and emotional patterns, and apply strategies to change them. “Seeing how the ADHD brain works differently from the neurotypical brain helps us understand, accept, and compensate for our differences,” Rosier writes in the book. “This knowledge that ADHD is a complicated disorder that affects each part of a person's life is the first step to managing it...so that you don't have to pretend to others and yourself.” Readers of this book will finally understand why those with ADHD think, feel, and act the way they do. Dr. Rosier applies her 12 years of coaching others to offer the critical practical tools like solving motivational murders, finding predictable patterns, setting boundaries, managing energy expenditure, understanding the ADHD Ladder of Emotional Health, and more. Anyone with ADHD—as well as anyone who lives with or loves someone with ADHD—will find a compassionate, encouraging guide to living well and with hope in this book. About Tamara Rosier, Ph.D - is founder of the ADHD Center of West Michigan, where she and her staff work with individuals with ADHD (and their families) to learn strategies and develop new skills to live effectively with ADHD. I've wanted to talk about navigating ADHD emotions for a while now, but like many other great topics it has sat untouched on my list, waiting for the perfect guest. When I read the incredible book ‘Your Brain is Not Broken: Strategies for Navigating Your Emotions and Life with ADHD' by Dr. Tamara Rosier, I not only immediately added it to the ADHD for Smart Ass Women book list, but I also knew I had to have Tamara on the podcast. Dr. Tamara Rosier is the founder of the ADHD Center of West Michigan, where she leads a team of coaches, therapists, and speech pathologists to help individuals, parents, and families develop an understanding and learn effective skills to live with ADHD effectively. Tamara has gained an impressive amount of knowledge from working with ADHDers and those who support them across a variety of setttings, but just as importantly, she explains complex topics like divergent vs. convergent thinking in a way that sticks in my brain. The analogies she uses in the book and during our conversation are brilliant; among many others, Tamara likens the neurotypical brain to a pleasant butler and the ADHD brain to an angry neighbor. It's simple and made me laugh and explains in real world language how the prefrontal cortex and limbic system impact our brain's ability to function. We'll also talk about the role anxiety and emotion play in our motivation, and why it's critical to work on our emotions before introducing executive function strategies! You won't want to miss this insightful and laughter-filled conversation. Resources Instagram: @brain_not_broken Book website: tamararosier.com ADHD Center website: miadhd.com
