Trademarks Are Not An Option | Ep. #056

Your brand needs protection.Let me say it again: Your brand needs protection. In this highly open and viral world we live in, it's no surprise that good business ideas and products are becoming easier to use as inspiration, or just flat out stolen, by new and established brands. All it takes is a Google search and endless examples of brand names, logos, and products will be there for the taking. So, how can you protect your brand from thieves and copycats?Trademarks.A trademark gives you nationwide exclusivity for your branding–your name, your logo, your tag line. Your brand's identity is not officially yours unless you register the trademark. So you must understand that trademarks are not an option; they are essential. So, how do you get a trademark?Today I have expert trademark attorney Tom Ladegaard on the show to tell you all about it!If this podcast is helping you in your business than help us promote it by following us or leaving us a beautiful 5-star review! Naming a brand or a new product can be one of the hardest choices you make for a business because it's a choice that has everlasting impact. In fact, one of the most common questions I get asked is:“Ed, how do I come up with the perfect name?”Well, that's tough because the perfect name will vary from brand to brand, but there are a few things a name must be:1. A name must be able to classify the uniqueness of the brand or of the product.2. The name must be recognizable.3. A name must be personal. Not only to you, but to your customer as well. And each one of these individual musts must be approached with a ton of consideration. So … what's in name?A lot more than you think.Come along as I break it all down on the latest episode of Howie Grow A Brand! If this podcast is helping you in your business than help us promote it by following us or leaving us a beautiful 5-star review! Being new is a powerful claim for a brand. It's good to be cutting edge with a fresh approach. But let me tell ya about an even more powerful claim: the past.Often, we look back at the stepping stones of our lives with a wistful remembrance. We long for the good old days, when things were simpler, and joy was abundant. If a brand has been present for those moments, it has a great opportunity…Nostalgia.Nostalgia in marketing works. When a brand associates itself with the meaningful moments in its customers lives, it establishes a relationship that goes beyond a financial interaction. There's an entire generation that will never forget Mikey liking his bowl of Life® cereal or Peter coming home for Christmas and brewing a hot pot of Folgers® Coffee for his parents. These products aren't just known, they are felt. So what relationship have you established with your customers? If your brand has been around a while, you need to be taking advantage of nostalgia. And if you are a new brand, ya better be working hard to create it. Let's get into it!If this podcast is helping you in your business than help us promote it by following us or leaving us a beautiful 5-star review! If your business is struggling, if you’re suffering and are on the verge of giving up the dream, listen up, because let me tell ya…It’s true that winners suffer longer. But that’s not the whole story. What you are suffering for is much larger than meeting the days quota, or the week's, or the month's. Each win aids the effort to get the next win, then the next win, and the win after that. The whole story reveals a domino effect of positive change, self improvement, and over all growth in the third act. But you have to stick around to see it.Today I unpack this a little bit through my experience as an indoor cycling instructor and the wisdom my good friend Brett Bartholomew shared about suffering. My advice? Lean into the suffering and focus on the win. Focus on the reward. Focus on the lessons learned. Focus on what the business will become if you can just. hold. on. If this podcast is helping you in your business than help us promote it by following us or leaving us a beautiful 5-star review! In reality it was there to keep everyone safe.We have the ability to self-govern and we have the ability to inspire others to more deliberately self-govern. Artificial Intelligence or Human Intelligence? | Ep. #35

Artificial Intelligence or Human Intelligence? What do you think when someone starts talking about AI?(That's artificial intelligence, for those of you not familiar with the acronym.) Do you have visions of the evil machine takeovers shown in Terminator, the Matrix, or even Robocop? When we consider the idea of AI in our future, something that people seem to ignore is the “artificial” part of AI.This year was an interesting one in Texas as we were challenged with several inches of snow, and a loss of power and water. During this period when people were wondering when power would be restored and whether they could drink the water from their faucets, if you happened to spend time browsing social media, it was apparent which brands were using AI and which were not. As we tried to get information about the crisis we were living through, messages flooded my inbox, telling me I could purchase a new car for less than retail or asking if I'd seen their last message about whatever service they were offering. It’s the “artificial” nature of AI that lacks the human ability to adapt behavior to the situational needs of their customers. That’s what we’re talking about in today’s episode. If this podcast is helping you in your business than help us promote it by following us or leaving us a beautiful 5-star review! I don't want to beat a dead horse, but – man, what a year 2020 was. We are three months into the new year and I’m hoping we’re going to start seeing a light ahead. Lately, I have been spending more and more time thinking about the year behind us and what’s ahead. During one of these times of reflection, I was reminded of the things that were going through my mind this time last year. At this time last year, things were beginning to get heated. Masks were going up and business occupancy was coming down. My team and I were working as hard as we could for our clients to help them keep going. We were laser-focused on supporting them, but even during the pandemic we always kept three words top of mind when providing solutions: invite, assure, and entice. We found these words to be really effective as we evaluated how our clients were making and keeping a connection to their audience. Is your brand deliberately inviting people into your brand community? Are you assuring your customers that any business they do with you or your brand is worth the risk? Have you enticed your customers with something special when they do show up? What's your brand's "call to action"?These three words and the questions we asked to keep us focused were invaluable as we evaluated whether our solutions would be effective. In today’s episode, we will explore these words in depth. Are you ready? Let’s get to it!If this podcast is helping you in your business than help us promote it by following us or leaving us a beautiful 5-star review! Chick-Fil-A believed then, as they do now, all someone had to do is taste the product once and they would be customers for life. What did Chick-Fil-A do? They understood the value of craveability.
