In this episode we were privileged to have Kurt Francom on the show from Leading Saints to talk with us on the sensitive topic of the rise of members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints deciding to leave or take a step back from the church. We talked about what our role is as leaders and friends when this situation arises, and how we ourselves as active members can stay in the church even through our crisis of faith. So many wonderful and interesting insights, and we hope you find something to take away from it! We definitely did! A few weeks ago our Stake President asked us how we access the atonement of Jesus Christ. We gave some heartfelt answers and then spent the next several weeks being instructed by the spirit how we could better answer that question in the future. Let us know how you would answer this question!
In this episode we discuss something that has been in our thoughts and hearts really since the pandemic started in 2020 and that is— HOPE. What is it? What does it mean to have a perfect brightness? What does hope look like for us? How do we get more of it? And so on. Also! Our friends Braeden and Bonnie Hayes over at Liberty Youth Academy started a podcast called Abide in Liberty so when you're done listening to this episode click the link below to visit theirs! Woohoo! We made it to seven years of marriage! We talk today about some of our lessons from the past seven years and why Emily is so good at marriage. I mean She is basically perfect, drop dead gorgeous, and next level spiritual. How could she not be an awesome spouse?1?1
We sat down this week with Andrew's maternal grandparents who just celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary! They share insights into the struggles young Latter-day Saint couples faced when they were first married and the things they did to overcome them. They then talk about how those lessons can benefit us today. Grandma also shares about a time she felt “like an elephant was crapping on (her) head” and grandpa's witty response that has still remained a catch phrase in their marriage decades later. These great people are leaving a spiritual legacy and inheritance that is currently and will continue to bless their descendants throughout the eternities. We LOVE them and this episode.
Sometimes when world, national, or local news, or even our own lives get heavy and stressful all we want to do is scoop up our little family and escape into the woods somewhere and not associate with anyone. We have been calling this the "bunker mentality." As enticing as this seems, we know deep down that it isn't what Heavenly father would want us to do. When you're in a bunker, you can't project light or peace or faith, or anything. You're fear based. When you create an outpost mentality, your living a faith based life. We can live IN the world and not OF the world. LINKS www.instagram.com/outpostofheaven

Liberty Youth Academy is a private school started by a Latter-day Saint family in St. George to be a holy place of learning through the lense of the gospel of Jesus Christ. They now have a second location in Sahuarita, Arizona and are hoping to continue to grow! In this episode we discus the why and how of their school, and some principles of agency and dive into the American constitution, Braeden's passion. This episode is a topic and guest request from one of our listeners, so THANK YOU for sending it in because we loved it so much, made new friends with our guests, learned so much and even talked so much that we had to make two parts! Don't mind us as I (Emily)word vomit all of my takeaways from the homeschool conference I attended last week. The Latter Day Saint Home Educator Conference was absolutely incredible. Everyone say hello to Nicole Horlacher from @thoughtbosscoaching ! We had a great time talking to her about what it means to be the boss of our thoughts. We know that thoughts leads to feelings and feelings lead to actions right? So if we can control our thoughts, we really can be the best us we can be. Nicole teaches us how we can really do that, applying the gospel of Jesus Christ. Emily was able to speak in Stake Conference (a meeting of several local congregations) about positivity and being more faith-filled. In this episode she gives us a deep dive into the the points she shared. None of them are ground breaking or complex, but when you apply these small and simple practical principles over time you will notice a HUGE difference.
We all are telling ourselves stories. Right now. A fact or event occurs and we assign a feeling and response to it BECAUSE we made the fact or event MEAN something to us BECAUSE we are telling ourselves a story. Make sense? Well in this episode that's what we are talking about! Wouldn't it be awesome if we could sing the song from the Prince of Egypt—“Look at your life through heavens eyes…” and actually DO it? How can we write positive narratives for ourselves? Also you can be the hero of your narrative! Write yourself as the hero, not the the victim! Okay calming down now. Just give it a listen, k? Thanks!
Have you done or started any spring cleaning yet this year? We are just getting the spring cleaning and home organization bug now, and ESPECIALLY after this conversation with Krystal Wilkerson from @homes.made.holy Krystal emphasized that by being intentional about our stuff and our space we actively invite the spirit to be with us in our homes, AND WE LOVED THAT. In this episode we welcomed guest, Shiloh Jordan, our new one week old baby boy to the show! So if you hear a lot of breathing and rustling, that's why! We shared his birth story, talked about unmedicated birth, and tried to explain our new found love for the concept of “earthy.” We also introduced Light the World with Love 2021, an advent calendar full of service and spiritual prompts to help us all keep Christ in Christmas this year. See the link below to print of the calendar and read more about the Light the World initiative! Lastly, we introduced our new format for the show! Being routed is very important to us, and we feel like the most rude thing for us to do in this phase of our life is to change up the frequency of our content creation. We will now, starting in 2022, be releasing a series of 6 to 10 episodes in bulk on one single topic, a few times a year. Please be patient with us as we navigate this new phase of life and phase of the podcast. If you would like to suggest a topic for a series or a guest, please connect with us on Instagram @outpostofheaven We would LOVE to connect with you, especially now that we won't be releasing content on a weekly basis. In this episode we welcomed licensed marriage and family therapist, Tammy Hill, to the show to use her expertise as a sex therapist and mother of 12 children to help us answer listener questions about raising teens in a world full of temptations. She answers questions from "How do we earn our teens' trust?" to "How can I prepare my teen to face the temptations of the world?" to "How can I reach my teen who is avoiding family time?" and many more! Tammy is a wonderful example to us of parenting in faith and not fear, and of letting the spirit guide us in every aspect of raising our kids. In this episode we discussed the topic of miracles in our day, using Elder Ronald A Rasband's talk from April 2021, “Behold, I am a God of Miracles.” We sometimes are quick to say that God doesn't give us miracles like He used to, or that miracles have ceased. But this is simply not true. Thanks to Elder Rasband's words, we better understand that a miracle is a divine manifestation of God's power and love in your life, and that we can see these miracles every day when we open our eyes to them. In this episode we welcomed Libby Myers to the show to share her and her husbands story of cancer, loss and grief, and to open our eyes more to what this type of grief looks like. Libby helped us better understand how we can BEST help those in our lives who are grieving, and how we can grieve in a Christlike way when our time for grief comes if it hasn't already.
In this episode we tackle a complex conversation (and honestly very genuine because we had never fully discussed it before!) and that is- validation or owning your emotions, acting enthusiastic, and the power of positive thinking. We aren't perfect of course and are not experts so we hope that this just helps spark thoughts and conversations in your own homes! Andrew gave us 4 tips to help us think more positively through a rough day or rough season of life. Just a reminder, we are not talking about deep, clínica, or major depression in this episode. We are talking about hard days and hard seasons that we all go through. If you'd like to hear more about depression, we have a few episodes of our show with guests and professionals that we would love you to listen to: episodes 53: A New You Again (Maternal Mental Health and Postpartum Depression) ft Aubrey Grossen , 32: Defining and Combatting Depression, Anxiety, and Postpartum Depression ft Lee and Liana Kinikini , 33: Anxiety & Depression pt 2- Helping Others & Raising Resilient Children Lee and Liana Kinikini LINKS: www.Instagram.com/outpostofheaven https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2013/10/like-a-broken-vessel

Hello and welcome to Hurricane Season! That terribly humid and chaotic season between summer and fall in Louisiana. We experienced our first Hurricane since living here—Hurricane ida—and have lots to share about preparation, what we did that worked and what we wish we did. We are so grateful and happy to be safe, and to finally have power back on after 11 days without it. We learned a lot, have grown so much spiritually, and we are hear to share it! See episode 80 to hear about our Hurricane experiences from last year. Today we talked about a grace. Recently we realized we were aiming to be graceful in our discipleship as opposed to being full of His grace.
