My special guest tonight is Ellen Evert Hopman, who reveals the origins and history of the New England witch hysteria, its continuing repercussions, and the multilayered practices of today's modern witches. Her book is called The Real Witches of New England. Reveals the origins and history of the New England witch hysteria, its continuing repercussions, and the multilayered practices of today's modern witches • Shares the stories of 13 accused witches from the New England colonies through interviews with their living descendants • Explores the positive role witches played in rural communities until the dawn of the industrial age, despite ongoing persecution • Includes in-depth interviews with 25 modern witchcraft practitioners, interwoven with practical information on the sacred calendar, herb lore, spells, and magical practices New England has long been associated with witches. And while the Salem witch trials happened long ago, the prejudices and fears engendered by the witchcraft hysteria still live on in our culture. What forces were at work that brought the witch hysteria quickly from Europe to the new American colony, a place of religious freedom--and what caused these prejudices to linger centuries after the fact? Weaving together history, sacred lore, modern practice, and the voices of today's witches, Ellen Evert Hopman offers a new, deeper perspective on American witchcraft and its ancient pagan origins. Beginning with the “witch hysteria” that started in Europe and spread to the New World, Hopman explores the witch hunts, persecutions, mass hysteria, and killings, concluding that between forty and sixty thousand women and men were executed as witches. Combining records of known events with moving interviews with their descendants, she shares the stories of 13 New England witches persecuted during the witch trials, including Tituba and Mary Bliss Parsons, the Witch of Northhampton. Despite the number of false accusations during the witch hysteria in the New England colonies, Hopman reveals how there were practicing witches during that time and describes the positive role witches played in rural communities until the dawn of the industrial age. In this Day of Pentecost episode of Scripture First, we're breaking down a passage in Acts where God breaks into His creation like a rush of violent wind and divided tongues of fire rest on the disciples. Adam, Kiri and Mason ask: What is Pentecost? What is a tongue of fire? And why is God delivering this miracle years after Jesus was resurrected and ascended to heaven? Nick Hopman explains how something new is happening here. The Holy Spirit is coming in a new way. Now, not just the prophets can speak of God's promises. Everyone can. We killed Christ. God raised Him from the dead. For YOU. SING TO THE LORDListen to Luther House of Study's newest podcast: Sing to the Lord! Martin Luther said, "Next to the word of God, the art of music is the greatest treasure in the world." The festival of Beltaine, May Day, is a celebration of the return of spring and the promise of summer, a time for love magic and spells for increasing the fertility of the land and the plants that grow upon it. Like Samhain in autumn, Beltaine is also a time when the veil between the physical and spiritual world is at its most transparent and the ancestors and denizens of the Otherworld easily interact with the world of humans. Presenting a practical guide to the celebration of Beltaine, Ellen Evert Hopman examines the plants, customs, foods, drinks, and rituals of May Day across many cultures. Discussing the gods and goddesses of spring, Hopman details the rituals for honoring them as well as traditional poems, prayers, incantations, folk rhymes, and sayings related to this time of year. She explores well dressing, the custom of honoring the source of sacred water by decorating a well. She also looks at Beltaine's association with Walpurgisnacht and Hexennacht, which fall the preceding evening. In the extensive section on the sacred plants of Beltaine, the author explores more than 90 herbs and trees, offering spells, rituals, and recipes alongside their medicinal healing uses. She reveals sacred woods suitable for the Beltaine fires and Beltaine flowers for rituals and spells. She explores herbs for luck, magic, purification, abundance, and love; herbs for protection, such as bindweed, elder, and St. John's wort; herbs of the Faeries and Elves, such as burdock and dandelion; and herbs for journeying to the Otherworld and contacting the high gods and goddesses. She also details the identification, harvest, and preparation of seasonal edible herbs, greens, mushrooms, and flowers. Woven throughout with mystical tales of folk, Faery, and sacred herbs, this guide offers each of us practical and magical ways to connect with Nature, the plant kingdom, and the Spirits that surround us in the season of spring.
Jesus opens this week's lectionary text by saying, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me." Adam, Kiri, and Mason ask Luther House of Study's Nick Hopman: what does it actually mean to believe in something? What is belief? What does it mean to believe in God and Jesus? Can you believe in one but not the other? We also get this whopper of a verse in this week's text: "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Nick explains what it means that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life and how Jesus saying that no one comes to the Father except through Him is not only Jesus being exclusive, it's a great promise. Maundy Thursday: an often overlooked section of Scripture in light of Easter coming around the corner. Adam, Kiri, and Mason ask Nick Hopman: what is Maundy Thursday? Why is there a section of verses missing from the middle of this reading? And what is the importance of foot washing? In the midst of the devil deceiving Judas into thinking that betraying Jesus is better than having faith in him, Jesus knows He's about to die so He takes a moment to teach his disciples, and us, something. When it comes to foot washing, Nick explains that Jesus is not making an assessment of the disciples' hygiene. Instead, He's teaching them what His Word is doing: making clean through the forgiveness of sin. Jesus is teaching us what is revealed in the "big washing," our baptism and every instance we receive Christ's Word from that moment on. GOSPELJohn 13:1-17,31b-351 Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, 4 got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" 7 Jesus answered, "You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand." 8 Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no share with me." 9 Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!" 10 Jesus said to him, "One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you." 11 For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, "Not all of you are clean." 12 After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord -- and you are right, for that is what I am. 14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. 16 Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. 17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32 If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. 33 Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, 'Where I am going, you cannot come.' 34 I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." A man was born blind. Jesus gives him sight. Everyone is upset when Jesus is merciful. No one believes the formerly blind man that he can now see. The Pharisees demand to know how he was given sight. His parents pass the buck. Nick Hopman teaches us that miracles aren't the gospel. They don't forgive your sin and give you eternal life. They do, however, show us who Jesus is: the one to get the gospel from. Just like Jesus did for the blind man in this week's lectionary text: Jesus' word gave him faith and it's doing the same thing for you. Kiri and Mason ask Nick:Where does sin come from? Why does Jesus use mud to cause this man to see? What is the definition of righteousness?SING TO THE LORDListen to Luther House of Study's newest podcast: Sing to the Lord!Martin Luther said, "Next to the word of God, the art of music is the greatest treasure in the world."To understand the importance of hymnody in the Lutheran church, Lars Olson and Mason Van Essen sit down with Zachary Brockhoff each week to discuss the lectionary's hymns, their meaning and history, and how the music preaches the Gospel. DESCRIPTIONIn this week's lectionary text we hear Jesus lay out terms of the law such as:"...if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also""Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you"and, the kicker, "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." We hear this and think to ourselves, "How is this even possible?" That's the law functioning on you. Luther House of Study's Nick Hopman teaches Adam, Kiri, and Mason how Jesus is using the two functions of the law to kill us. That's right. Jesus is using the law to kill you. He's not building his kingdom in a world ruled by the law. It's a heavenly kingdom through resurrection—and to have new life you have to first die. John the Gospel writer describes John the Baptist's landmark statement, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" Adam, Kiri and I point out how, without context, this phrase doesn't make sense. What does it mean that Jesus is a lamb? Can lambs take? Is there a difference between taking away the sin of the world and paying for the sin of the world? Luther House's Nick Hopman describes how important it is that Jesus is bearing the sin of the world, and how the early church (and Christians today) want to keep God clean and struggle with Jesus bearing the sin of the world. We finish with how incredible that act of grace is. John 1:29-42The Lamb of God29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.' 31 I myself did not know him, but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' 34 And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Chosen One.”The First Disciples of Jesus35 The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and as he watched Jesus walk by he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed). 42 He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).Support the showInterested in sponsoring an episode of Scripture First?Email Sarah at sarah@lhos.org or visit our donation page: lutherhouseofstudy.org/donate
The Gospel of Matthew opens with Joseph finding out that his fiancé is with child from the Holy Spirit and is planning to call off the engagement quietly. That is until an angel intervenes and appeared to Joseph in a dream. Luther House of Study's Nick Hopman teaches Adam, Kiri and Mason about how the virgin birth isn't the most fundamental aspect in this passage, the significance of the angel naming Jesus and what His names means, and the biggest miracle in this text. What is the biggest miracle that happens in a text that features a virgin birth and an angel appearing to Joseph in a dream? The biggest miracle is that Joesph believes! It's not hard for God to speak through creation or to become incarnate. The most difficult thing is God's creatures not wanting to trust in Him.What you'll hear in this episode is the same thing that the angel announces to Joseph: Jesus is the Messiah and He's here to save us from our sins. Adam, Kiri, and Mason ask:Why is it a big deal to dismiss her quietly? What does Emmanuel mean? How is the virgin birth not the biggest thing in this reading?Support the showInterested in sponsoring an episode of Scripture First?Email Sarah at sarah@lhos.org or visit our donation page: lutherhouseofstudy.org/donate
We welcome Luther House of Study's Nick Hopman back to Scripture First to discuss the text for Christ the King Sunday: Jesus on the cross between two criminals at His crucifixion. The Messiah is supposed to be glorious. Yet, here Jesus is. Hanging on the cross. In fact, people all around Christ are tempting Him to be the glorious Messiah and save Himself. But He doesn't. He takes on the sin of the world. Jesus dies. There's no way around it. And we are baptized into Christ's death. We go to our crosses too. But Jesus is the resurrection. Jesus meant it when He said, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise." Adam, Kiri, and Mason ask:What's Christ doing asking God to forgive them? Why are they asking him to save himself? How does the criminal know Jesus is the Messiah?Support the showInterested in sponsoring an episode of Scripture First?Email Sarah at sarah.stenson@lutherhouseofstudy.org or visit our donation page: lutherhouseofstudy.org/donate

Jesus tells a story about a rich man and poor man named Lazarus. They both die and Lazarus was taken up to Abraham and the rich man was sent to be tormented in Hades. He begs for mercy, but Abraham informs him there is a great chasm between them that cannot be crossed. The rich man then begs Abraham to send Lazarus to warn his brothers, but Abraham replies they have Moses and the prophets. There's a lot to unpack in this week's text, but Nick Hopman gives us the main takeaway: that this text is an invitation to preach the gospel.Kiri, Adam and Mason ask:Why did Lazarus go to Abraham? What did Lazarus do that was righteous? Why can't you cross the chasm? For the first time on Scripture First, we welcome Luther House of Study's newest professor, Nick Hopman, to the podcast to discuss a passage in Luke where Jesus heals a woman of a spirit that had crippled her for 18 years. The leader of the synagogue takes issue with Jesus' actions because he healed her on the sabbath.Nick breaks down what is the law, how Jesus' Word brings a permanent end to the law, and how the law isn't replaced with a new law but with faith in Christ. Kiri, Adam and Mason ask:How do you praise God? Why is it "bad" that Jesus healed on the sabbath? What does it mean to be put to shame?Interested in sponsoring an episode of Scripture First? We all understand providing education for people with rotator cuff tendinopathy (and other conditions) is really important but we have very few resources or guidance regarding what should be delivered and how. In this episode I discuss two qualitative studies exploring the views of patients and expert clinicians about what needs to be included in education for rotator cuff tendinopathy. We the findings to develop an education resource which is embedded in one of the papers (Cridland et al). Some interesting insights - I hope you enjoy. We are back this week with another special episode. Instead of focusing exclusively on motherhood, I, Mackenzie, am presenting Part II of an incredible interview that I had the opportunity to do with my father. If you haven't had a chance to check out Part I, be sure to tune into the previous episode, Episode 41. They say that becoming a parent allows you to see your own parents in a whole new light. In my case, that light shines and shimmers with the admiration that I have for my dad. At my wedding, my dad and I danced to the song “What a Wonderful World“ by Louis Armstrong. It has been his favorite for as long as I can remember. No matter how difficult things become or may seem, my dad always has the ability to see the world through a positive lens. This song embodies his outlook on life and the optimism that guides his spirit. In our time together behind the mic, I get to dive into my father's past, his thoughts & reflections on his many adventures and experiences, his passions and his yearnings for the future. Scott Wesley Hopman is 77 years young as of this past August. He has nearly eight decades of life experience under his belt, and enough strong opinions to make your head spin. I hope that you enjoy listening to Part II of this wonderful interview as much as I loved being able to record it! A huge thank you, again, to my father for his willingness to record these two episodes—may your transparency, self-examination and never ending optimism be an inspiration to all who hear your passionate voice! I love you, dad ❤️ Thanks as always for listening! You can find us on IG @abcsofmatrescence.com. If you have a moment, please leave us a rating and review. It truly helps to grow our community and connect with other moms.

Trial is approaching, and you learn a witness you planned to call live now isn't available. You'll need to read or play their deposition testimony instead. That means that you must prove the witness' "unavailability" under the rules. How do you do it? Which rules do you need to analyze? How far in advance of trial do you have to do it? Can you just tell the judge that, last you heard, Peter, Paul, and Mary were leaving on a jet plane, and you don't know when they'll be back again, so you're probably going to read their depositions? Check out this outstanding episode, which discusses Fed. R. Civ. P. 32, Fed. R. Evid. 804, and others you'll need to know, including Fed. R. Civ. P. 43, 45, and Fed. R. Evid. 402, 403 and 602. The good news is, all the analysis has been done for you here. Sit back and listen! And check out the nearly two dozen authorities on which this episode is based, all cited in the show notes below.
