For 70 years we got great at putting single-family homes on the outskirts and basically quit building family-sized housing in the places people actually want to live. Riley's bet is that you fix that the way you'd fix any hard manufacturing problem: own the whole stack, design every part from first principles, and build the home in a factory. His first prototype went from manufactured to installed to finished in 13 weeks, and the goal from here is a home that costs 30 to 50% less than local construction. What's it like to be the caregiver for your parents while raising a young family of your own, and your wife is pregnant? Not easy!  Healthcare journalist Paul Wynn writes about caregiving issues for more than 70 national publications. He also knows what it's like to be a caregiver, sandwiched between two generations.  That personal story is the subject of "Surviving the Sandwich Generation Years: How to Balance Caring for Parents While Raising Kids", one of twenty-two stories in the award-winning anthology, The Caregiver's Advocate: A Complete Guide to Support and Resources, Vol 2, edited by Debbie DeMoss Compton.   In the story, Paul describes life as a boy, watching his mother take care of his grandmother. He noticed his mother's patience and tenderness and how much his grandmother seemed to appreciate his mother's company. Those simple observations would serve him well as an adult.  Here's an excerpt from Paul Wynn's story. It takes place over a ten-day period. At the time, Paul is married, the father of two young children. He and his wife live in New York. His father has died. His mother lives in Pennsylvania. She has dementia. So does his uncle. "...I rented a U-Haul truck and moved my uncle's personal belongings from his home to a Catholic-run assisted living facility where he moved into a studio apartment. And that's in 2025. Life tends to only get more expensive, typically at around 2-4% per year. As we all learned over the last four years, that rate of increase can be MUCH higher than that. In today's episode of the Seeking Excellence podcast, I take a look at these numbers not just in the present, but what I anticipate the cost of living will be 10-15 years from now. The rising costs here in Denver (and everywhere) are the number one reason why my wife and I are moving from Colorado this summer. If we make a strong income but can barely afford to live here now, what are the chances our kids will be able to in 30 years? We love it here. We love the weather, the beauty, and the many great relationships we've formed over the last four years. Moving for lower cost of living is a tough decision I know many people are considering. I hope that today's episode can bring some peace and clarity to the decision for some and give others some things to consider! Spoiler alert: life will be very expensive when us millennials have kids in high school
