Inside Chase's mission to be the Bank for All: Building trust one community at a time with Diedra Porché

Women on The Move Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 14, 2023 27:51

As head of community and business development at Chase, Diedra Porché has a deep passion for understanding the needs of the people the bank is seeking to serve. In this week's episode of Women on the Move, she joins host Sam Saperstein to discuss her role and how she empowers local communities and helps individuals build financial security and wealth. Growing along with JPMorgan Chase Diedra began her career with JPMorgan Chase nearly 30 years ago. She likes to tell people that she's had about 10 jobs and worked in three different business lines. She started her career in an officer development program in Texas, moved on to Commercial Banking, worked with the Government Banking team, and then physically moved across the country to California and helped build out the bank in Los Angeles. “It's been a wonderful journey,” she says. “I've always enjoyed staying close to customers, and working with our field teams, and representing the bank in our communities. I had no idea how much the work would evolve into an opportunity that allows us to work hand with community stakeholders to effect impact for people beyond banking. At the time when I started in banking . . . things were pretty straightforward. You went to your local branch, you worked with your local team. Fast-forward to today, and there's just a myriad of complexities that customers are dealing with.” She says that one of the most important things she learned along the way is how to work together with all stakeholders. “That means each of us has a role to play in serving communities in the best way,” she tells Sam. “And it takes private sector, it takes our public sector, and it takes our not-for-profits and our local stakeholders to really be that three-legged stool to make communities really thrive.” “We do this work together” In her current role as head of community and business development in Consumer Banking, Diedra says she's “delighted and privileged” to serve her team. “We are a collective team of leaders that have the opportunity to go into communities, build trust, to work to boost financial health so that we can put people on a path to building legacy wealth for their families,” she explains. Her team accomplishes that by providing information in the form of free financial health workshops and programming, as well as building hyper-local relationships with stakeholders. For context: Chase opened its first Community Center branch in Harlem in 2019 as part of its $30 billion racial equity commitment to build stronger ties to the community and provide banking services and financial education in underserved areas. Since then, Chase has opened 15 additional Community Centers across the country, primarily in low-to-moderate income communities.. Each Community Center features  a team of local financial health experts focused on community engagement, mentorship and advice. Each Center also features a large multipurpose room which can be used to host free financial health workshops, community gathering or pop-up shops for small business customers. When asked what she's most proud of about the work her team does, Diedra has an easy answer: “First, let me just say I am delighted that in two and a half years, we really have become a part of the framework of the  franchise. I tell my team all the time, we're knitted and weaved into a full tapestry of who we are as a firm.” In terms of metrics, Diedra has plenty to be proud of too. One of the most important metrics she looks at is trust metrics—how communities and consumers feel about the bank's brand. And while noting that JPMorgan Chase  already enjoys a very strong brand, she says that seeing those trust metrics in the communities where her team has invested in represents a meaningful shift – it's the kind of change the bank is committed to building upon. One of the keys to success, she says, has been welcoming non-customers into community center branches to get access to education and financial health workshops at no cost to them, and not requiring them to be a customer. “Additionally, we collaborate with local nonprofits that are already working with residents and [Chase] customers in these neighborhoods,” she notes. “So in partnership with them, we're able to create programming that our communities can access either at their nonprofit location or inside our branches.” It's never too late to start…on your financial health journey Diedra offers a simple idea for anyone wanting to improve their financial health. “The one tip that I would give is to create a plan. It's never too late to start and ensure that you have a plan. Start small. Any amount that you're putting away will make a difference, and to just stay focused on those habits and stay disciplined.”   Disclaimer: The speakers' opinions belong to them and may differ from opinions of JPMorgan Chase & Co. and its affiliates. Additionally, he serves as Co-Chair of the Commercial Bank's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council and as a member of the Bank's Commercial Credit Risk Committee. Aga is originally from Washington D.C. and now lives in Weston Connecticut. His path in polo begin 8 years ago when he was introduce to polo by a close friend. Not knowing what he was getting into he took a lesson at Yale University. The first time he hit the ball clean, he was hooked. He would go on to immerse himself into the sport. Today, Morgan is a member of the Yale Polo Club, but has played extensively around the country. Dale Johnson is currently the Manager of Global Platforms for Visa ,and is the Founder of the Equine Chain. A company created to credential horses on the blockchain. Dale is from  Oakland California, and recently returned to his hometown after living in San Francisco's Bay Area. Dale's involvement with horses and ultimately polo began generations earlier with his grandfather who was as a horseman on a cattle ranch north of Houston, his grandfather, Papa Charlie, who was slave from Georgia, founded the ranch with his wife Penny. Everyone up until Dale's grandfather was born on the ranch. All the fundamentals of horsemanship never left and trickled down to Dale's father and ultimately him. Dale's introduction to polo came from a visit to Buneas Aires and the purchase of pair of polo boots. He came home and spent his first bonus on a polo clinic. But unlike hiting a ball or the thrill of riding, Dale was attracted to the game by how challenging it was. Aga and Dale are doing incredible things for the sport and are looking to change polo's image and become a more inclusive and accessible sport to everyone interested in picking up a mallet. Their success at the Detroit Polo Club, which you will learn more on this podcast, is a perfect model to expand to other locations across the country and I look forward at the prospect of creating a similar program in Chicago. I am honored to call Aga and Dale friends and excited to see them continue to  do great things for the game.  WELCOME TO OUTSIDE THE BOARDS™ PODCASTThe OTB™ Podcast was created with the goal of introducing listeners to people, places and stories and provide a unique behind the scenes perspective of the sport of polo that breaks all the common stereotypes. Today on The Leaders' Brief - Tod Wolters, a top US general posted in Europe said that there was a "low to medium" risk of Russia invading Ukraine as the UK - an NATO ally, ordered warships to sail to the Black Sea. The decision, which is yet to be officially confirmed, comes as Russian troops continue to build up along Ukraine's border. Ukraine has been fighting Russian separatists in the eastern Donbas region for months now and is apprehensive of the Kremlin planning another invasion. Such concerns come after Russia placed more troops on Ukraine's eastern border than at any time since the Crimean annexation of 2014.  American banking group, Citigroup is planning to close consumer banking operations across 13 countries as it does not have the scale to compete in these markets. The bank would now only offer industry banking services, completely doing away with retail banking in the 13 markets that include Australia, Bahrain, China, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. It is expected that the banking group will now try and look for takeovers of its consumer banking services, possibly from local players.  USA's National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA awarded SpaceX a $2.9 billion contract to build a moon lander as early as 2024, picking it over Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and defence contractor Dynetics Inc. NASA plans to send a crew to the ISS aboard another SpaceX rocket on April 27th. “NASA rules,” the billionaire entrepreneur who leads several other companies such as Tesla and Neuralink wrote on Twitter after SpaceX won the contract.  About egomonk: Website | Facebook | Twitter | LinkedInegomonk is a global intelligence platform delivering asymmetric outcomes by bringing organizations closer to the communities they want to serve and the leaders they wish to influence. I first address the big purge of followers we all had on Twiiter after the President was banned from Twitter and how my demographics are impacted! Yours truly helped someone locally here in Southern NM recover a $7000 check from Bank of America that would be held for 12 days in 12 hours! Bank of America has policies that require you to deposit checks when you don't have enough to cover them, and then when you deposit them, they place holds after they process, screwing you in the process. I exploited loser BofA associates in my neck of the woods in getting help for a man named Chuck. It was exhilarating and I once again prove, I am the best banker out there! :) I explain the policy in the first segment. We then talk about Wells Fargo's earnings via an Austin Weinstein story in the Charlotte Observer. We talk about how Wells Fargo, despite their scandal, made $3 Billion last quarter. We then discuss how 6400+ people have lost their jobs in Consumer Banking while only a small fraction of that lost their jobs in investment banking or wealth mgt. I then complain about the fact that despite the need to cut costs by sacrificing branches, and tellers inside branches, they added 2500 employees to WF "Corporate"...Wtf?!?! I then talk about a weird CNN Business article that came out during earnings which had a hard-on about Q4 Refunds to customers which were $300 million plus, and somehow tied it to the "Unauthorized Account Scandal" and not oh, say...the pandemic? It's a weird article meant to scare housewives. Takes a couple cheap shots, even though they are warranted. Q4 Wells Fargo Earnings Report Finally... we briefly riff on the now-retired General Counsel of Wells Fargo who was fined $3.5 Million for his role in the scandal of 2016. We talk about how the hits keep on coming. (Source: Another Austin Weinstein Article - Charlotte Observer) All My Links HERE MY PATREON Page! On our 7th episode we are joined by two very talented women, Siew Choo Soh, Managing Director & Group Head of Consumer Banking and Big Data/AI Technology at DBS Bank and Terisa Roberts, Director and Global Lead: Risk Modelling and Decisioning at SAS. Siew Choo shares with us DBS’s mindset around innovation. For them, the use of technology does not equate to innovation. They don’t have a designated innovation department, just a small innovation team whose job is not to innovate, it’s rather helping other people across the bank to innovate. They provide resources to enable everyone to be able to innovate by empowering the individuals and teams to be curious. Terisa draws attention to a recent study by Deloitte, showing that firms who invest in diversity and innovation are 8 times more likely to achieve their business outcomes. She also mentions that in Risk Management, they monitor the algorithms they’re using in society and how these algorithms can discriminate against certain groups. Whenever they are faced with these challenges, a diverse team is in charge of identifying and remediating these biases. Quotes: "Their job is not to innovate, their job is to help other people across the bank to innovate." "You have to introduce bias to unbias your algorithm, because the algorithm has been trained by biased data." "Because of historical biases that were present in the training data that the algorithms learned from, that was perpetuated. A diverse team would have been able to stop that bias from becoming operational in the way decisions are made within that firm." "To make them understand each other from the different background they have, whether from cultural perspective or job experience perspective, can sometimes be quite a challenge, but I would say that once you manage to go through that initial phase you’ll see that it will help you get the best results, if you have a very diverse group of people." Today's show explores financial innovation through the eyes of one of America's most respected consumer advocates. My guest is Lauren Saunders, Associate Director of the National Consumer Law Center. The NCLC has been active in consumer financial protection for over 40 years. Lauren manages its Washington, DC office and directs its federal legislative and regulatory work on issues like prepaid cards, electronic payments, small dollar loans, credit cards, bank accounts, and consumer protection regulation overall. She also contributes to NCLC legal treatises, including Consumer Banking and Payments Law, Consumer Credit Regulation, and Fair Credit Reporting. Previously she directed the Federal Rights Project of the National Senior Citizens Law Center; was Deputy Director of Litigation at Bet Tzedek Legal Services; and was an associate at Hall & Phillips. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School and was an Executive Editor of the Harvard Law Review. She holds a Masters' in Public Policy from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and a B.A., Phi Beta Kappa, from Stanford University. In our conversation, Lauren talks thoughtfully about what worries her about consumer finance today and how she thinks we should address emerging problems. We had a wide-ranging discussion, including about what would happen if traditional payday lending was no longer an option (she'd like a "Goldilocks" approach on loan length). She also discusses her concerns about both easy credit and fast credit; partnering between banks and marketplace lenders; using alternative data in underwriting; and the future of overdraft products as we move toward increasingly fast - and even real-time - payments. For a look into the innovators who were mentioned in the show (and who have been featured as previous guests), check out their websites: Digit, Even, and Simple. Also note Lauren's mention of the American Express-backed movie, Spent. Also .... Time is running out to vote for my SXSW panel!  Remember to vote for my panel for SXSW 2017. It's Regulation Innovation - how to modernize regulation to optimize financial innovation. My fantastic panelists are CFSI's CEO Jennifer Tescher, the White House's Adrienne Harris, and Simple CEO Josh Reich. I'm heading to the UK for meetings on progress so far with the regulatory sandbox that was launched this year by the Financial Conduct Authority, to distill some lessons for the United States with our much more fragmented regulatory structure. Two days after I return from London, I'm heading to Fiji for the annual global conference of AFI - the Alliance for Financial Inclusion, which is made up of the financial regulators of the Global South. In November, I'll be speaking at the FinTech forum of the Singapore Monetary Authority - in the portion that will be Asia's first-ever RegTech conference in Asia. And I recently had to turn down invitations to speak in Tokyo and in Shanghai, and to participate in a UN gathering in Tanzania. All of which is to say, financial innovation is global, and so are the global challenges of how to regulate it, and so is Barefoot Innovation. We have listeners throughout the world, and I'll be recording fascinating podcasts on these travels. Watch for widened horizons this fall. Class Action in Consumer Finance Agreements

The Federal Arbitration Act (FAA), passed in 1925, generally requires courts to look favorably upon all arbitration agreements. In 2011, the Supreme Court upheld an arbitration agreement in a contract for mobile phone services that contained a class action ban. The court ruled that a state law that prevented the class action ban from being enforced was “an obstacle to the accomplishment of the FAA’s objectives.” -- However, Congress passed the Dodd-Frank Act in 2010, which authorizes the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to study arbitration agreements in consumer contracts and limit or prohibit them if doing so would be in the public interest and for the protection of consumers. In May 2016, the CFPB issued a proposed rule that would ban arbitration agreements that acted to prevent class action lawsuits and would further establish certain reporting requirements for other arbitrations that are filed between consumers and providers. -- Our experts discussed this proposed rule, including the history that led us to this point and the potential impact it will have if it is finalized. -- Featuring: Prof. Jason Johnston, Henry L. and Grace Doherty Charitable Foundation Professor of Law, University of Virginia School of Law and Thaddeus King, Officer, Consumer Banking,The Pew Charitable Trusts
