Oh, and here's our index of all episode in one concise page   Running Sheet: John Schumann on protest songs in times like these00:00:00 Intro Introduction to the show. 00:04:20 SA Drink Of The Week The SA Drink Of The Week is 2015 Pikes The Merle Riesling, tasting with Andrew Pike. 00:11:20 John Schumann In 2017, John Schumann teamed up with Shane Howard to co-write a modern protest song, Times Like These. Apart from the sense of frustration in the lyrics about how previously hard won gains are disappearing by degrees, there's a haunting line in it that has spooked me, given that I'm now in my second decade as a marketer who teaches businesses how to use social media: From Dondale to Manus Island detention People are drowning in a sea of inattention This society is so fraught with and saturated by things of distraction, I wonder if protest songs are ever going to have potency ever again. So, I've asked John Schumann to reflect on this with me. John, I want to trawl back through some of your protest songs produced with Redgum, and get your reflections on other protest songs of note, but let's start with an experience I had this morning, when I went to YouTube to relisten to TImes Like These. They say that protest songs thrive within a social and temporal context (time and place), that's what gives them meaning and power, so how's this. Your song was not able to play until I'd been subjected to a cheery ad for Target, coaxing me to buy some glittering toys, and then a health insurance ad wooing me to switch to them with the offer of waiving waiting times for claiming extras. I think I got my daily allowance of irony. Could Bob Dylan's Blowing In The Wind get cut through in Times Like These? And when are Times Like These NOT times like these. For example, we hear of people protesting the invention of the printing press, saying books will wear out our brains, we hear of ancient Roman  writers lamenting "today's youth", and then we hear songs from back in the 70s like Winter In America by Gil Scott-Heron with lyrics like: Seem like winter in America And ain't nobody fighting, Because nobody knows what to save Are all times as good or as bad as all other times, which begs the question, do we need protest songs at all - or do they give us something to occupy ourselves with, like throwing a bone to a dog? You and I both saw a show at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival recently, The Art Of Protest, starring Vince Jones. My feeling at the time as a Vince Jones fan, was that there was a dissonance between Jone's smooth and polished voice and exquisite jazz accompaniment, and the heart-rending nature of some of the protest songs he played. Are there some key ingredients for a protest song to work, eg, the style of voice and music, as much as the content? There was nuance in the name of Jones' show - the Art Of Protest. Art suggests that artists CHOOSE to do a protest song. Am I just naive to think that "real" protests songs are songs that emerge because there is NO OTHER CHOICE, vs making a decision to do something from the protest genre just like a pop genre? Should there be a price paid by singing or writing protest songs? Can you take us through the chemistry and the road map that led you and Redgum to write and produce some pretty bitter and frustrated songs? What did you ever hope to achieve with any of your songs that might be classed protest songs, such as I Was Only 19? And do you start with an agenda, or do you just have something to say and let the cards fall where they may? In a recent episode of Blind Insights with David Olney, they quoted a former PM of Australia saying: We will tolerate dissent, as long as it is ineffective. Does that wind you, to hear that? Does that make the protest enterprise futile? Most important protest songs? Advice to any young Redgums today? 01:03:56 Musical Pilgrimage In the musical pilgrimage, we have a fitting song from John Schumann and the Vagabond Crew, featuring Shane Howard, called Times Like These. On this week's episode, I'm talking about how I've recently been feeling a bit like an imposter when talking about Overlanding or vehicle modifications. I wanted to talk about this because I think we've all felt this way at one point or another. When you post up on a social media network, excited about a new piece of gear or modification you've made to your vehicle, only to be shot down by a ton of negative feedback, it can make you question whether what you did was the right choice. However, most of the time when we feel like this, it's inaccurate and it's just crappy people on the internet sniping at people from behind their keyboards. So, I wanted to talk about what made me feel this way and hopefully help anyone who's newer or has been feeling the wrath of other people's negativity. As always, I'd love to hear from you guys in the comments! Join the conversation and let me know about times you've experienced this kind of stuff or ways you've overcome it. #085 | Untamed + Money - Mike and Maggie talk about their feelings

Untamed is written in 3 parts: Caged, Keys, Free. Although the book is written in short chapters that jump around both in time and topic, the book’s general structure supports the broader realization that the author wasn’t in the life she wanted or that was true to her. And then through realization and life changes, she finds that freedom. So we’re going to talk about the parallels to money. Because it’s all well and good to know you’re not happy or fulfilled, but there is a very real requirement in making a change and that’s money. In the prologue, the author tells a story about taking her daughter to the zoo and sees a cheetah. They are told that the cheetah leads a good life, but the author recognizes that even though the cheetah has its basic needs and leads a life that others determine to be “good”, it actually longs to be in the wild, despite being born in captivity. In Part I: Caged: Being caged is about doing what’s “right”, doing the things we “should” do, etc. We can all relate to this. How we are supposed to live our lives:How to look: Where to go to school:Where to live:What to drive:Where to work/what to be:Then, the lack of money traps us and puts us in a cage. Which I don’t think we even realize we’re in, just like the cheetah. But it doesn’t feel right. And many people find themselves in a life they can’t afford, in a job they don’t like, and totally unfulfilled. It’s this realization that leads people to FIRE. You don’t discover the community built around quitting your job unless you start searching for it.In Part II: KeysWhat are the keys to free yourself from the cage? Money is a powerful one. It allows us to step out for a moment to see what things could be like. The big one for us, is that annoyances or frustrations that would cause most people to drink and just bear it because they need money, causes us to say, “Do I even want to keep doing this anymore?”Maggie believes your mindset around stuff and happiness and “Keeping up with the Jone’s” is one of the most powerful keys because it helps you not spend all of your money.  You aren’t trying to impress other people, and you don’t believe you’re suffering.  Doyle says, “When a woman finally learns that pleasing the world is impossible, she becomes free to learn how to please herself.”  It’s not about impressing someone else, learn that and you’re free.  You have found the key to the cage.Your FI number is the key. If you want to have the freedom to make a big change in your life, you need “enough” money. And then you make the rules.Another key is finding passions. The author talks about feeling right and not, and a passion feels right when you find it. The author would call this, “feeling warm.” In Part III: FreeDoyle struggles with the idea that she should suffer by staying with her husband, in this life she doesn’t want, for her kids. One of the themes is that being a woman and mom is about being selfless, but she wants to be brave and set the example to live a life true to yourself. So, spoiler alert, she leaves her husband and marries Abby Wambach, the soccer player.Once you decided that you need to make a change and then you save like crazy, you can reach FI. Now what! You now have the freedom to lead an intentional life, not the life people are telling you to live.“We can do hard things.”  It can be hard to save money and build wealth.  It can be hard to resist temptation and not do what everyone else is doing.“Being human is not hard because you’re doing it wrong, it’s hard because you’re doing it right. You will never change the fact that being human is hard, so you must change your idea that it was ever supposed to be easy.”“What the world needs more women who have quit fearing themselves and started trusting themselves. What the world needs is masses of women who are entirely out of control.”“The braver I am, the luckier I get.”“I am a clinically depressed inspirational speaker.  I am a diagnosed anxious person whose main job is to convince people that everything‘s okay.. Please note that if I can be these things, anyone can be anything.”Top 3 takeaways:It’s ok to come to the realization that the life you're living isn’t exactly what you want. You shouldn’t suffer through it, and growing your wealth will provide the keys to freedom.Be brave and make a change!**Bonus - If this isn’t obvious by now, read this book.  And get it from the library!Show references:Book: Untamed by Glennon DoyleGlennon Doyle’s non-profit, Together Rising--Follow friends on FIRETwitterInstagramFacebookLinkedInLeave us a voicemail or text us: 404-981-3370eMail us at:  friendsonfiremm@gmail.comVisit our website: www.friendsonfire.orgfriends on FIRE etsy store---Other LinksMaggie’s Blog: Mostly Minimal LifeMike’s Book: Your New Relationship with Money

Jone Stebbins was guitarist and a founding member of all-girl early 80's hardcore punk pioneers, Reno, NV.'s The Wrecks. She and bassist Bessie Oakley also produced the beloved and influential Paranoia fanzine in that era. Since the 1990's she has been making music with Wrecks drummer Lynn Perko-Truell as bassist of Bay Area super-group Imperial Teen. Jason and Jone became friends in 1983 as penpals, they met later that year when she and Bessie spent a number of months in Los Angeles running Shawn Stern's BYO record label. The conversation tracks her path as a self-proclaimed seeker of all things weird. We follow along from her early teen discovery in the late 70's of ‘midnight movie' screenings like Rocky Horror Picture Show to her immersion in the DIY participation culture of early- 80's hardcore punk, the formation of The Wrecks and Paranoia, her move to the Bay Area in the late 80's and her life in music and culture from that era through to today. It's a fun and inspiring conversation. Thank you so much for listening. My man DJ Memphi$ Jone$ just delivered a hot and pipin' freshly cooked mix crossing all things FUNK. Quite literally it was delivered - in the mail on a compact disc - directly from one of the funkiest towns around: Memphis, TN. No, we won't let technology hold us back! The collection runs deep, he's been collecting incredible pieces of vinyl for years and years. I connected with him through Egon, and we did a very memorable night out there with Dam-Funk back in 2009. But my guy out in AZ named Smite was telling me about Chad's label Memphix Record label back in the 90's (look that one up too). He's a DJ, curator, collector and this mix is exactly what you need to enjoy the rest of the Summer with. Dig on this, pass it along to any Funk aficionados far and wide. If yr on IG - follow him @silkyvincent - he posts some dope records. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
