Communication, Charisma, and Purpose - With Ben Trammell

Listen in to this episode with my friend and senior pastor Ben Trammell.   We have a discussion about communication, speaking with power, as well as living and working with purpose. Ben starts by talking through his earlier years as a bit of a prodigal son, and how he was called to serve as a pastor.  We then discuss life callings in general, how people struggle with doing the things they know they need to do. Ben then discusses the ups and downs of being a pastor of a large church, and how doing the work finally led to confirmation that he was living out a calling. There are also actionable tips on: Why someone who doesn't speak for a living should still work on their ability to communicate How seasoned leaders can and should let their people take risks and fail, while helping them improve How submitting to Christ's lordship is not a one time thing, that it is something that must be lived out over time as you pursue a life calling. How using commonplace illustrations in speaking can help shape the narrative of a talk, and how those can re-frame the lens that your audience sees other content in the world. How scheduling big conversations at work and in your home can help make more productive dialog Don't miss out on this enlightening discussion with my friend Ben Trammell.   Resources Join the Mighty Angel Newsletter to get tips on work, family, and faith – as well as content not on the audio www.mightyangelpodcast.com   Song attribution New Hero In Town by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5742-new-hero-in-town License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

How to cultivate a curious personality to connect with others Being courageous enough to offer compliments to people Open body language with a balance of power and warmth Momma's manners - Ask for help, say please and thank you Work Practice and do gratitude. Charisma Series - Presence

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 15, 2021 30:36

Charisma - Presence Why talk about charisma?  Listen in to learn how to improve your communication and leadership skills by building your charisma.  Connection between leadership and communication – the one that communicates with clarity is the leader. Charisma improves your communication – especially to those that follow more by “feel” (which we all do to some degree, and others do it better). Speaking for people who don't give speeches - why should you work on this space? Natural talent X effort = skills.    Skills X effort = achievement Theory A lot of people's reaction to leaders/communicators/people is NOT at the top of their head. You'll say afterwards “I like her/him”. The “liking them” happens irrationally, and THEN you work back with rational reasons why you like them. 3 areas to help – Presence, Power, and Warmth. I got a lot of this from Brett McKay, a writer over at the art of manliness who pulled heavily from Olivia Fox Cabane, author of The Charisma Myth Presence – are you there? Look in their eyes. Don't be afraid of silences – a lot of time you are thinking about what you want to say People typically will not call you out on low levels of presence, they'll simply feel/report afterwards not much of a connection, versus “I like that guy/gal" Less is more – your charisma enhanced by listening far more than you might think At work. Turn on the speaker view in remote meetings. Hide your own view, so you aren't distracted by your fantastic looks. Really, don't multitask!  If you are multi-tasking consider dropping your attendance form the meeting. Restate what they said – but don't be patronizing “what I heard you say” You have to actually be seeking to understand...you can do a bit of repackaging for a long ramble (people appreciate the help summarizing their thoughts), but do not manipulate with your restatement. With Kids Don't be so quick to spout your words of wisdom – slow down a bit to really be in the moment. Ask good open ended questions, not closed ended. Can you do that? Tell me about how you could do that.. You don't have to spend hours and hours, but the time you do spend with kids - be intentional, try to really be present for SOME of the time. In Faith Be present when you talk to God. Trying to cram in time with God typically doesn't work. Get in the right physical space & posture, man! If you have a pinging thought pop up, find a notepad to write out the thought, give it a bit of space, then get back to God. In church services?  Try a few things to be more present Have a plan for lunch before you go. Try leaving your phone in the car. Pay attention to the words of the song, even pause from singing to listen to the faithful Next up in the Charisma Pt 2 - Power and Warmth   Resources Charisma Series at Art of Manliness https://www.artofmanliness.com/articles/the-3-elements-of-charisma-presence/   Join the Mighty Angel Newsletter to get tips on work, family, and faith – as well as content not on the audio www.mightyangelpodcast.com   Song attribution New Hero In Town by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5742-new-hero-in-town License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

    Leadership Looks Like Work

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 1, 2021 34:15

If you don't work for a corporation, no stress.  In this episode, you can learn more about how to notice and seize the mantles of leadership that are all around you. We start with examining a situation we've all been in.  You are in a circle – it might be a group of parents at a kids event, your team at work, or in a faith based small group.  Someone pipes up – “who wants to help with xyz?” (bringing food, volunteering to coach, take on that compliance/regulatory task, or teach the next lesson) THIS is a leadership opportunity. Main points in this episode Leadership looks like work The asker for help is most likely leading the group The person who can communicate with clarity is the leader - and how its not just about finding problems People really want to be led. They also often don't want to be the leader (although they might want or say they want the trappings of leadership) It looks like work. It often is MORE work to take on more responsibility. Communicating with clarity is about capturing the sentiment of the room, and giving voice to those feelings that are out there. If its bad, acknowledge it, but recommend action and hope going forward. If its good, call that out too. CLEARLY, shortly, call out with clarity. Most of the time talking but ending your statements 20% sooner will do this trick. In your career Take on the rough jobs. Once I had a body of compliance work that no one wanted. It was the digital equivalent of inheriting old pipes and roadways that were out of code. Not fun work. I didn't know how to do it. But after piecing thorough how to maintain this body of work others were avoiding, I realized something. Now, I own the roadways – a decision to take on work turned into an opportunity to lead and add wider value. These can be open calls for work, like a boss asking for help. But more often, leadership is paying attention to the problems of your peers and solving them...or even better, paying attention to your boss' boss' problems, and rallying together to solve them. Warning, you will feel like an impostor when you stretch yourself to lead something. Caution Caution on asking for permission too soon or too often. Ask enough people, and you'll get a “no”. May be better to just START DOING IT – at some point along the line, you will need to “ask” and make official the thing you are leading. Leadership is not just being the whipping boy, doing everything yourself - you GT kids have problems with this. It is also being bold enough to ask peers and not-peers to do things for you. Just ask...again, remember, people like to be led, to have their guardrails defined and scope of work clear. Pro Tip Another pro tip for leadership looking like work? You'll look like the leader when you recognize and hand out kudos for work well done. Don't wait or pine away for this recognition to come your way...people won't even really notice that you were the kudos-hander-outer, but their perception of you as LEADER will be cemented when you recognize others...plus...allies! Leadership in the Home You can't get the significance without taking on responsibility. What is responsibility? What is significance? Take on the top end of what you can be responsible for – start small, with yourself, many will say. Nope! It can be really hard to love yourself enough to take full responsibility for your health, your career. It might be easier to take on some responsibility for something psychical around you – make the bed. Mow your yard. Make sure your car gets washed. Let that expand to others – help your kid with their homework. Be responsible for your kids spiritual training (not that you have to DO it all, but make sure it gets done) – this is in scripture. Kids Ephesians 6: 1-4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. Holy cow, Paul – you should be telling my KIDS THIS! They exasperate the crap out of me! Jesus turned things on their head – first will be last, last will be first...blessed are those who mourn. Giving little is giving a lot. For fathers, we tend to want to rule things (also given from God to take dominion and LEAD over things) BUT – he knew you would have problems with exasperating your children. You'll notice it – their head falls, eyes roll, uhhhhhchhh – they've likely been trained out of saying what they really WANT to say. The deal is they obey and honor you – you don't take advantage of their weaker position by exasperating Pro Tip A tip on leadership in the home...make sure you are one accord with your spouse. Both spouses will lead at times...both spouses will also LIKE being led. But there is something about my wife – not sure if it is a man thing or not, but she is a high performer...but she responds when I suggest we do something to better our situation – particularly in spiritual matters. I think God builds into wives a need to RESPOND when husband leads. This does not mean that she will do what you want, but it will elicit a response. I think a ton of guys don't lead out of fear – were I to lead her in an area of our marriage, it will likely bring up a response to deal with a problem. So guys don't lead. Pro tip for leadership in the home – get on the same page – and make an actionable decision. Really. Just decide...its not the end of the world, and often you can change things later. But something happens in your brain after deciding. The world shrinks. Uncertainty shrinks. You can start on the next best actions, and move forward. Your brain kicks in some feel good chemicals because you are moving towards a goal. Everyone likes this. So get off high-center, pardner! Faith How can you be led by God? What does God ordained leadership look like? Solomon prayer – a discerning heart to lead your people well – pray it! Also, give yourself over to people trying to lead you spiritually. Treat your pastors better – they have a tough job Stop complaining about your church – know what God has called YOU to lead I'm a teacher, small group leader, communicator – so I take a long hard look when these are needed in my church or spiritual organizations. The other “guilt trip volunteer” not associated with my gifts? You aren't off the hook on those either, but really know what God has shaped you for Action Take something on that you normally wouldn't – even a small thing “I'll be responsible for trash out, every time.” Be the scout leader, the coach – teach a Sunday school class, or take on a mentee (he doesn't have to know, just do lunch.) Recognize that the president of the volunteer club, the school board member – they have status. If you have NO status in your life and you are a guy – MAN, you really need to get it. We don't do well when we are at the bottom of every dominance hierarchy out there. Listen in for a discussion on growing giving and legacy in your employees and teams.  Meet Michael Michael puts the “P”in Slattery Perkins Ramirez – a firm that provides tax, accounting, and advisory services focused on growing family legacies with value-added planning & consulting – all while developing their team to its fullest potential and having fun! I was connected to Michael from another mighty man of God, Mike Sharrow, back in episode 24.  Mike recommended I speak with Michael to get another perspective on an owner running his business with Godly wisdom and kingdom values. Introduction We get to know Michael Perkins and his accounting, tax, and business planning firm. We then dive in to discuss legacy – what is it, how you grow a family legacy, and how you can instill the value of legacy in your employees. Michael then talks about how they take care of employees, and how helping them grow their personal legacy first then helps them grow the legacy of their clients. How legacy is far bigger than financial terms - legacy of fatherhood, motherhood, service, excellence generosity, and others. Legacy Michael talks about a giving experiment he did with employees, giving them each $1,000 cash to donate or give to anyone of their choosing. He talks a bit about the wide range of people and causes impacted, as well as how that served to grow his employee's giving capacity, growing their legacy as individuals. Teaching Giving to kids Michael talks about setting aside some of your kids “commission money” to designate as giving, as well as involving kids in your discussions around family giving. They also pull in their kids by sponsoring needy children through the organization Compassion International, which allows you to not only provide basic necessity items to the child, but also give specific gifts to children and their family that really help their situation. Around holidays, involve kids with the efforts you might be involved in giving, it can be a good experience to have kids help deliver those gifts – that can help give your children perspective, to see the impact giving can make, helping make that generosity stick on their hearts. The Faith basis for generosity We talk a bit about biblical sources for generosity, and how Michael's mother modeled service to others in the school district she volunteered in. Secret random acts of kindness – Michael walks through a practice done at his firm, where the leaders and staff listen for opportunities to do small or not so small random acts of kindness for people aroudn the office. We finish up with a fantastic discussion about how to balance work, family, and faith, and how Michael got that balance wrong earlier in his career. Work We begin with a discussion of the recent movement to inspire noble manhood, before diving into a discussion of why some books clearly resonate in people.  We go on to talk about the maxim of “tending your fields” and how managing and tending the spheres you have influence over can lead to greater responsibility and influence. Family Stephen then introduces his family, including ways he has found to substantiate rituals to keep adult children connected, as well as tips on how to maintain a family culture as members separate geographically. The “hi-low” ritual – This simple strategy allows you to connect with kids, even as they get older.  Ask "what's the best in your world and the worst in your life (or day) right now?"  Stephen also discusses yearly rituals – having trips, holiday connections, firm rituals that are deployed with intentionality. These won't just happen all on their own. We also talk about the power of a healthy partnership in marriage, how to be mindful of resentment, and how to pay attention to your spouse's efforts to improve themselves. Men on Fire Why center a book around fire? Stephen talks a little bit about what attracts guys to fire, and how this book builds on past writings to inspire noble manhood.  We talk a bit about how guys who are doing right things, good things, may still have some fire missing from his belly. Then, we go on to talk about the fire of battle, how men need to fight the invisible fights of their world – be it protecting the soul of kids and spouses, fighting for your health, and fighting for friendships who may be struggle. For the fire of destiny, we talk a bit about how God inspired destiny can deeply change the way you view your life, your hardships, and accomplishments. We go on to talk about the fire of God, what is God-given Authority, and how men can carry the “Mufasa factor”. I hope you enjoy this discussion with one of my heroes, Stephen Mansfield! Check out this episode for a discussion on Christians and politics, a run through a fighter pilot's career and leadership style, and how faith and values can show up in the political realm. What's in the Episode I'm joined by Col Josh Andrews (ret), a longtime friend and colleague. Josh and I start with an overview of his career as a fighter jet and drone pilot in the air force, including a discussion of the challenges of leading a family and maintaining a marriage while fighting for our country. We then discuss some of the differences in leading in the military versus a corporate setting, and how war requires more direct hierarchy versus a civilian company requiring more relationship building. Then we dive right into politics, with discussion on: How believers need to not let preferences rise to the level of spiritual convictions. The role of knowing God's direct truths in scripture versus topics that the bible doesn't address specifically How to engage your children in political topics in an age appropriate way How believers may not need to simply disengage from political discourse. I hope you enjoy this fantastic discussion about maintaining a spiritual witness to others, knowing the values that drive your politics, and leadership at work, in the home, and in the public square. 7 Steps to Set Routines in a Shut Down World

A discussion of the power of routines, as well as tips on re-setting your routines in a shut down world. In this episode: How 35,000 daily decisions can drain willpower and increase anxiety. Why limiting choices and deciding ahead of time can increase the level of peace in your life Setting some routines but remaining flexible to the reality of your daily world 7 steps to setting up your routine Start with the basics – What do you have to get done in the morning – brush teeth, bio, make coffee/breakfast Add in the semi routines – working out, shaving, regular things that aren't daily Add in the ideal items – Get down the things you want to get accomplished, they could be morning or evening activities. Quiet time with God. Writing a book, working on a project, active time with kids (throwing a ball) going on a walk Figure out your wake-up time – may mean you need to get up a bit earlier, but pick a time that is realistic for you. Earlier isn't already better. Calculate your “lights out” time in the evening to make sure its realistic on how much sleep you need daily. Attack the evening routine too. I've rarely thought about the evening, but starting at a goal “lights out” time helps. Include a “screen time off” where I read to sleep. Be realistic, put in some TV time, hanging with your spouse, and when to start kid bedtime. Again, you are looking for signposts – I'm shooting for 10pm screen off, 7pm start kids bath, etc. Don't overdo it minute by minute – Use rough timeframes and big milestones- I have a block marked “allowance for crazy”. Big milestone is – logged in for work by 8:30...home from walk by 7:30. Limiting choices and making decisions ahead of time can save you mental energy and ensure you make progress on bigger goals. Action Write out your personal routine on a note in your phone or scrap of paper – post it on the mighty angel podcast Facebook group. Its OK to do it badly! Communicate 1 or 2 proposed changes with your spouse!   Resources A fantastic blog on “book ending your day” with routines https://www.artofmanliness.com/articles/bookend-your-day-the-power-of-morning-and-evening-routines/ Listen to all episodes at www.mightyangelpodcast.com Join the newsletter at www.mightyangelpodcast.com/join Matthew's Routine Morning 5:50 wake up Bio, brush, contacts, dress 6:15 Out the door - walk and quiet time 7:30 Back to shower/shave (T,Th,Su) 7:45 breakfast & coffee 8:00 allowance for kid crazy 8:30-8:45 Login for work Evening 7:00 - start bedtime for littles 7:30- littles in bed 8:00 - bigs to bed 8:15-9:00 misc work/project/podcast 9-10 in bed screens 10:00 screens off 10:30 lights out   Song attribution New Hero In Town by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5742-new-hero-in-town License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

We also talk about how you can't steward something well if you don't know what the owner wants...and you can't know what the owner wants unless you take time to know the owner! Why the work life balance may be a myth, a trap of how we set up words. Mike talks about how to tell when your work has become less about providing and more about chasing an idol of success. Learn more about the power of divine multiplication in this episode. Matthew finally notices the 4th time “not-a-coincidence” of hearing the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand and decides to talk about it. Listen in to learn more of the steps of multiplication, how it is NOT prosperity gospel, and how to apply this Truth in your work, family and faith. Five steps of multiplication: Notice the problem Notice the problem – open your eyes to the problems that are around you. Don't look for “A” problem in your life. You need to see “THE” problem in your life that seems so big, that seems so wide, there is no way in the world that you're going to be able to do it. We have a tendency to close our eyes to the big problems that we can't change. A lot of people are too scared to even acknowledge big problems...I think because they are afraid they'll be called to do something about them. Take inventory with what you have No whining. Or at least minimal whining. What are the things that you have? Even if it doesn't seem like it would be connected AT ALL to the problem you are facing, take inventory. Give it to Christ “bring them here to me” - Be thankful for the things that you have. Look at your inventory with humility, with a realistic eye. Give thanks. Then he gave them back to the believers The power of gratitude, as well as a listing of the things we have to be thankful for. Learn how you can still look for change and making things better, while also holding graciousness for what came before. Jesus gives it back to believers, then they have to give it away. What is divine multiplication? It's the same phenomenon when you have a second child. Then you give it away. Do. Act. Eat and be satisfied. Not keep it for yourself only. I can't just keep it for myself God isn't going to divinely multiple something that is only for you. He'll spill it out into the world, to things that you touch. You'll likely have no idea how many people you impact, you touch. Sometimes you will, God feeds your heart with knowing some impacts, but the true multiplication is beyond you, bigger than you. He multiplies things for HIS purpose. I just get the unique honor and pleasure of getting to be a part of that process. Recap & Action to take Be courageous. You won't want to do this. Good luck! Pick a problem in your work, or something big in your family that seems unsolvable. Take inventory of your skills. Give your inventory to Christ. Give thanks. Give it away. In this episode: Matthew leans heavily on where he's found wisdom - parents, the books of wisdom in the bible, Christian writers, those who have discipled him over the years, and older mentors he has had the honor of knowing. A discussion of who Solomon was, and these scriptures: Not feeling, not emotion, but FINDING satisfaction.  Ecclesiastes 3:13 - A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God.  Colossians 3:23 - Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. Matthew then talks about perception shifting, and how knowing who you work for can change your ability to find satisfaction in your toil. Proverbs 24:27 - Put your outdoor work in order and get your fields ready; after that, build your house.  Reviewing this verse, Matthew discusses times you need to plant, prepare, and make proper sacrifices before going home.  This does not mean you ignore the fields at your house...there are seeds there too to be worked. Attitudes around work Work was there in the beginning, before the fall, in the garden.  Subdue the fields, control the birds and beasts. A discussion of how to shape your children's attitudes toward work, especially your complaining time about your job. Faith without deeds is dead...yet great accomplishment without love is a ringing of a gong or clashing of a cymbal The Wilderness of Being Out of Work The Second half of the episode we dive into being out of work and its impacts How even Jesus was led into a time of hunger in the wilderness. Tommy tells about a health breakdown, a near death experience, and a full encounter with his creator that lead to redemption.   We then go on to talk about how this encounter has re-framed the way he looks at his work, how he serves his wife & family, and starting his faith journey anew. We close up by talking practical steps of how people can slow down in their work, reconnect with their God, and plainly deal with surrendering to achieve a lasting peace. Practical tips Find a quiet space in the morning, even if you aren't quite comfortable with spending the time talking to God, at least get some open space to think. Just find time to slow down, and set the tone well. Balance at work – find ways to take care of the things that matter first. Family, Kids...your faith...work...and balancing these things together. The closer you can meld those piles together, the more peaceful you can operate. The guidance comes down to not letting your schedule dictate you, but letting a proper balance dictate the schedule. This week I discuss Fear.  With the coronavirus and social distancing going on, I hope this little talk is helpful. We discuss low grade continual fear versus acute fear before a one time event and how they are different. Helping kids face monsters in the dark Combating anxiety, including a recipe for thankfulness, prayer, and claiming a promise of peace The first bit of audio is scratchy, I cleaned it up as best as I could, but thought the content was relevant to the times and hopefully useful. I've also been working on getting the new website up...it and I are a work in progress.  The end result will be a hub to view all episodes, be up to date on any announcements, as well as places for you to join the newsletter or donate to the show.  Check it out, with all this coronavirus shut in time, no telling how much I'll get done on it! We're legit, folks! www.mightyangelpodcast.com
