Autism has been rightfully getting lots of media airtime lately. Indeed, it is a deeply misunderstood condition and, sadly, 85% of autistic adults are unemployed. As you'll hear in this episode and in my 2020 episode with Dr. Temple Grandin, neurodiversity can help teams thrive and people on the autism spectrum often have a lot to bring to the table at the workplace. In fact, they may bring super strengths that could be akin to what my guest refers to as the Autistic Advantage.   My guest, Olivia Fox Cabane (https://www.askolivia.com/), is the author of a huge bestselling book, The Charisma Myth: How Anyone Can Master the Art and Science of Personal Magnetism. I loved this book and have given it out to countless people I serve. Yet, you'll hear the personal story of why Olivia wrote the book and how, as an undiagnosed person on the autism spectrum, the publicity tours associated with the book were excruciating to her. You'll also hear about how the diagnosis has been badly misunderstood, how many treatment modalities have been harmful—even extremely harmful—to people on the spectrum, and some things people need to know to better understand members in our community who are autistic. She even shares the cross-cultural aspects of being in a relationship with a neurotypical husband and some benefits of being in a neurodiverse relationship. So, listen in as Olivia and I talk about the Autistic Advantage. Please note, some descriptors of treatment modalities on this episode are graphic and violent in nature. Please listen accordingly.

This the first episode of the current season of my podcast - Pushing Beyond the Obvious and I am super happy and excited to kick off the season with none other than Lisa O'Neill. She is a self described energy and human expert. In this wide ranging conversation about energy and leadership, she shared a lot of great insights on leadership. Here are some of my takeaways from the conversation: She shared insights about the importance of knowing ourselves. If we do not know what kind of a leader we want to be, how would our team know. In order for our teams to perform at their best, they need to know exactly what we expect from them. So the first thing that we need to do as a leader is to become aware of what exactly do we want, who exactly we are and how exactly should our team engage with us. She also shared the importance of letting our team know how we roll as a leader. That way they know how to get the best out of us. High performing teams don't just need team members performing at their peak but their leaders performing at their peak as well. And this aspect of leadership is not discussed or shared enough. She shares a 4 step model to help us get more self aware - Notice, Nourish, Navigate and Nurture. In all, she shares the importance of pondering, pondering about ourselves and what we want. She also challenged the leaders listening with these three quests: Spend a week only asking questions of your team. List down all the people in your team and rate them from whom you really like to the one you least like. Answer the question - why is this so? Write down three personal things you know about everyone on your team. If you can't up with them, take them off for a cup of coffee or tea and talk to them to get to know them. In conclusion, this season could not have started at a better note than this conversation. I have lined up a lot more conversations with both thought leaders and practicing leaders for the show and am excited about how things will go from here. I hope you ride along with me on this journey. Get the book here:EU: http://amzn.to/2lxOiMsUS: http://amzn.to/2mcpY6KThe most common charisma myth is that you either have it or you don't. Which is unfair since charismatic individuals often make more money. It determines if you are seen as a leader or a follower and it's critical in business. Anyone can learn to be charismatic by learning a set of non-verbal behaviors. Body language plays a big part in charisma, so it's really important to get your internal state right, since we can't micro manage all our body language consciously. Charisma can be broken down to three main components: Presence, power and warmth. What kind of charisma we will present depends on those three components. We can alternate between: Kindness charisma, visionary charisma, focus charisma and authority charisma. We can also blend the charisma styles together. We should adapt our charisma style depending on the situation at hand.

• Olivia Fox Cabane explains how there are four charisma types according to the proportion of power, presence and warmth. The focused charismatic (who pays deep attention to others), the visionary charismatic (who communicates their infectious passion), the kind charismatic (who inspires with warmth and compassion) and the authoritative charismatic (who leads others with expertise and power). • Depending on your goals, you can play up your natural charisma strengths or seek to balance out your weaknesses. • To be socially and emotionally comfortable, plan ahead and make sure you're physically comfortable, which will remove barriers to charismatic connection. • Use ritual and visualization as a “social warm up.” Music, meditation, and affirmations can help you prepare. • Build presence with mindfulness. Slow down, breathe and anchor in the senses. Pause before you respond, and take conscious care of every detail of the interaction, including your verbal and nonverbal expression, appearance, and behavior. • Howard Friedman emphasized the affective, nonverbal expressiveness component of charisma. • Communicate with all your body and laugh openly. Speak with a dynamic, varied voice that changes in pitch, tone and expression. Use touch to bridge distance and create warmth, aware that the rules differ for men and women. • Speak less and emote more via facial expression. If you find yourself the center of attention, relax and don't draw attention to awkwardness, using humor to defuse tension. Use exaggerated, pantomime-like gestures and initiate contact with strangers. Finally, practice the art of “platonic flirting.” • Introverts can be charismatic, but they must do so on their own terms. Sean: Do you tackle when people do get emotional in a negotiation? For example, I know that there are times when I personally felt offended, when there are negotiation counterparts when I was starting up SEO-hacker, who would give me a super-duper low price and would try to just shove it down my throat, that I have to get that deal so that will make some, one person feel bad. How do you usually respond when that happens? Mark: Some people just take the classic hard-line, "I am going to beat you down and get the lowest possible price." Some like to use intimidation. You see this particularly if one party is just physically bigger, louder, comes off stronger, and they wanna intimidate the party. But we have to remember as business negotiators. Again, there are exceptions like these hostage negotiation cases, but for, I suspect most of the audience here, we're business negotiators, this is about a business deal. And really whether that person is big or scary or loud or quiet, doesn't matter, it about does the deal work for us? And so don't be afraid first to walk away if it's not a good deal for you, but then also to recognize if you yourself are getting emotional. If they're trying these things to just tweak you to just put you in a state where you basically make a mistake because you are so emotional, it's okay to take a break. It's okay to not respond to that email immediately or to say "let's come back to this tomorrow, or I just need to step out" or even "I need to go to the bathroom for just a few minutes, we can keep going," and just walk out, recognize you you're in that mental state. And then you can use calming techniques. You can use techniques like my friend Olivia Fox Cabane has a great book called "The Charisma Myth." And there are techniques in there, for example, you just step out, go to the bathroom, whatever. When you're doing that, think about your loved ones. Think about your pet. Think about that childhood toy that made you happy. And just in your mind envision this, and that's going to shift your mental state from being in that angry, emotional, ‘I have to fight back because that person said something very mean', to I'm thinking of my childhood pet. I'm imagining playing with my dog. I'm relaxed. I'm happy. Okay. We have an issue on the table. I'm going to come back to it, but I can do so in a state where I don't have those emotions clouding my judgment. The charisma myth is the idea that charisma is a fundamental, inborn quality—you either have it (Bill Clinton, Steve Jobs, Oprah) or you don't. But that's simply not true, as Olivia Fox Cabane reveals. Charismatic behaviors can be learned and perfected by anyone. Drawing on techniques she originally developed for Harvard and MIT, Cabane breaks charisma down into its components. Becoming more charismatic doesn't mean transforming your fundamental personality. It's about adopting a series of specific practices that fit in with the personality you already have. The Charisma Myth shows you how to become more influential, more persuasive, and more inspiring. When it comes to charisma, people often think of movie and television stars in the spotlight. They believe that charisma depends on one’s natural appearance, temperament, and some inborn qualities that are difficult to explain. However, that’s not the case. This book, The Charisma Myth: How Anyone Can Master the Art and Science of Personal Magnetism tells us that charisma is not innate but a practical skill that anyone can learn. All of us can be charismatic if we consciously practice charisma techniques.

Charisma - Presence Why talk about charisma?  Listen in to learn how to improve your communication and leadership skills by building your charisma.  Connection between leadership and communication – the one that communicates with clarity is the leader. Charisma improves your communication – especially to those that follow more by “feel” (which we all do to some degree, and others do it better). Speaking for people who don't give speeches - why should you work on this space? Natural talent X effort = skills.    Skills X effort = achievement Theory A lot of people's reaction to leaders/communicators/people is NOT at the top of their head. You'll say afterwards “I like her/him”. The “liking them” happens irrationally, and THEN you work back with rational reasons why you like them. 3 areas to help – Presence, Power, and Warmth. I got a lot of this from Brett McKay, a writer over at the art of manliness who pulled heavily from Olivia Fox Cabane, author of The Charisma Myth Presence – are you there? Look in their eyes. Don't be afraid of silences – a lot of time you are thinking about what you want to say People typically will not call you out on low levels of presence, they'll simply feel/report afterwards not much of a connection, versus “I like that guy/gal" Less is more – your charisma enhanced by listening far more than you might think At work. Turn on the speaker view in remote meetings. Hide your own view, so you aren't distracted by your fantastic looks. Really, don't multitask!  If you are multi-tasking consider dropping your attendance form the meeting. Restate what they said – but don't be patronizing “what I heard you say” You have to actually be seeking to understand...you can do a bit of repackaging for a long ramble (people appreciate the help summarizing their thoughts), but do not manipulate with your restatement. With Kids Don't be so quick to spout your words of wisdom – slow down a bit to really be in the moment. Ask good open ended questions, not closed ended. Can you do that? Tell me about how you could do that.. You don't have to spend hours and hours, but the time you do spend with kids - be intentional, try to really be present for SOME of the time. In Faith Be present when you talk to God. Trying to cram in time with God typically doesn't work. Get in the right physical space & posture, man! If you have a pinging thought pop up, find a notepad to write out the thought, give it a bit of space, then get back to God. In church services?  Try a few things to be more present Have a plan for lunch before you go. Try leaving your phone in the car. Pay attention to the words of the song, even pause from singing to listen to the faithful Next up in the Charisma Pt 2 - Power and Warmth   Resources Charisma Series at Art of Manliness https://www.artofmanliness.com/articles/the-3-elements-of-charisma-presence/   Join the Mighty Angel Newsletter to get tips on work, family, and faith – as well as content not on the audio www.mightyangelpodcast.com   Song attribution New Hero In Town by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5742-new-hero-in-town License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

The topic of today's episode of the podcast is charisma and I cannot stress enough the importance of this subject.Charisma, contrary to popular belief, is a skill and a skill that can help you in so many ways in life, from gaining respect and admiration, to succeeding professionally, from attracting the partner of your dreams, to having your kids hear and listen to you every time, from gaining popularity amongst your friends, to being able to stand up for your or somebody else' rights when need be.Not a bad deal, is it?But behind the surface and as if it weren't enough, charisma is not only a toolbox you can decide to use, or not use, to succeed at anything you want, but also the starting point of your inner growth into a more accomplished, self-centered and impactful human being. The subject is complex and fascinating, and I am so excited to discuss it with one of the worlds' leading experts and an incredible guest.Olivia Fox Cabane is the author of the book The Charisma Myth and if you want to do yourself a favor, listen to this interview and then go buy the book which by the way , went into second printing before it even launched; and which has ever since  been translated into 32 languagesOlivia Fox Cabane has taught leadership, innovation, genius, and charisma at Harvard, Yale, MIT and the United Nations. In times of rapid change, people who can think creatively are invaluable. Leonard Mlodinow, author of the book, Elastic: Flexible Thinking in a Time of Change, calls this type of thinking elastic. It is a bottom up approach that unleashes new ideas, and he believes anyone can employ it, since it is innate to us. Leonard’s previous books include Subliminal (winner of the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award), The Drunkard’s Walk (a New York Times Notable Book) and The Grand Design with Stephen Hawking. He’s also written for the TV Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation. During our conversation he shares more about what elastic thinking is, why we need to cultivate it, and concrete ways to do just that. In this interview we discuss: Elastic thinking as a way of making new or breaking already-established rules, as well as framing or reframing problems The fact that we need elastic thinking now more than ever in a world of rapid change How bottom up thinking serves as the basis for artificial intelligence and machine learning Why humans, with our 100 billion neurons, still outdo computers when it comes to elastic thinking How our point of view can preclude us from solving a problem, so that we constantly need to challenge our hidden assumptions, in order to see things differently Ways to broaden our thinking include asking about the least popular dish at a restaurant and then trying it, talking to people not normally in our social circles, questioning a strongly held belief, and thinking about times we made a mistake How giving our brains down time to make associations, generate ideas and relax our mental filters can improve our problem-solving abilities Links to Topics Mentioned in the Podcast @lmlodinow http://leonardmlodinow.com/ Encyclopedia Britannica Wikipedia Caltech Ellen Langer The Net and the Butterfly by Olivia Fox Cabane and Judah Pollack Natural neural networks Google translate Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Doolittle Raid If you enjoy the podcast, please rate and review it on iTunes - your ratings make all the difference. In light of the recent Mother's Day celebration, Wade appropriately interviews a tough mother of three. Whitney is a stay at home mom who decided that she needed something that was going to engage her physically and mentally — and tennis just wasn't going to cut it. In 2005, after her youngest child went off to Kindergarten, she decided to truly put this plan into action and entered a nearby martial arts studio. Since then, she's earned her black belt in Kenpo Karate.   Something incredibly impressive about Whitney is her ability and determination to persevere through nearly anything. She broke two of her ribs in the middle of her 8-hour black belt exam — and yet, she continued on and finished!   In this episode, Whitney speaks about her start in martial arts, what her first class was like, her journey to getting her black belt in Kenpo, and her stint in teaching Kenpo and her own, unique style. She also shares her wisdom on perseverance, the importance of asking questions and considering the ‘why' during training, and her advice for those who are nervous — but interested — in pursuing a martial art.   Key Takeaways: [1:06] About this week's guest, Whitney. [2:06] Welcoming Whitney to the podcast. [2:29] When and why Whitney got started in the martial arts. [3:17] What was Whitney's first class like in Kenpo karate? [4:06] About Whitney's journey in Kenpo karate. [5:58] The history of Kenpo karate and its origins. [6:27] About Whitney's stint of teaching Kenpo karate and about her own, unique style that she created (a merge between women's self-defense and core) and about the popularity it held. [7:59] Why did Whitney leave her teaching position? [9:27] How has Whitney involved her kids in martial arts? And at what ages? And the key takeaways children gain from martial arts. [16:50] The importance of preserving through the tough moments in life, and Whitney's story of how she broke two ribs during her 8-hour black belt test — and kept going! [19:11] Where does Whitney see Kenpo karate progressing in the future? And the importance of asking questions and considering the ‘why' during training. [23:10] Whitney's advice to those who are considering taking up a martial art. [25:19] Whitney's parting words of wisdom.   Mentioned in this Episode: Rory Miller The Charisma Myth: How Anyone Can Master the Art and Science of Personal Magnetism, by Olivia Fox Cabane

Breakthroughs can take our work to new and exciting places, yet they rarely happen as often as we’d like. Are there ways to prompt these kinds of moments, so we can create them more often? Olivia Fox Cabane and Judah Pollack tell us how in their book, The Net and the Butterfly: The Art and Practice of Breakthrough Thinking. Olivia is the former Director of Innovative Leadership for Stanford StartX and bestselling author of The Charisma Myth. She has worked with companies like, Google, MGM, and Deloitte, and she has lectured at Harvard, MIT, and Yale. Judah Pollack is a former faculty member at Stanford StartX and a lecturer at University of California, Berkeley Haas School of Business. He has worked with organizations like Airbnb, IDEO, and the U.S. Army Special Forces. In this interview we discuss: How breakthrough thinking requires two systems in the brain: the Executive Network (the net) and the Default Network (the butterfly) How we need off-task time in order for the Default Network to engage and create breakthroughs The 4 types of breakthroughs: Eureka, Metaphor, Intuitive and Paradigm How Eureka Breakthroughs are sudden insights that are fully formed, when everything seems to fall into place That we are predisposed to certain kinds of breakthroughs and how it helps to honor our natural style That no one style of breakthrough is any better than another How Metaphorical breakthroughs help us see topics in new ways How Intuitive breakthroughs seem like just the beginning and less easy to trust, requiring us to have faith in the process How Steve Jobs had an intuitive breakthrough that the iPhone needed to be made of glass That our brains our physical objects that need to build new neurotransmitter receptors in order to construct new knowledge How our practice with exploring new experiences in the brain affects our ability to make breakthroughs How surfing the net for new things or watching new movies can help with building the brain plasticity that helps to make breakthroughs How curiosity enlivens brain plasticity How fear negativity affects the Default Network and works against us having breakthroughs Why our best ideas may come to us in the shower How our inhibitions can cause us to feel like imposters or make us overly critical, either of which can hinder breakthrough thinking How the placebo effect can be used to our advantage Ways we can practice failure in order to normalize our feelings about it Three supertools that can help us achieve breakthroughs How the journey toward topic mastery create preconditions for breakthroughs How implementing these practices can affect us down to the gene level How to find the balance between our fast-paced, hyper-focused work world and the slower, more diffused approach needed for breakthrough thinking Links to Topics Mentioned in this Podcast Olivia Fox Cabane Judah Pollack The Net and the Butterfly: The Art and Practice of Breakthrough Thinking The Charisma Myth Stanford StartX University of California Berkeley The Executive Mode Network of the brain The Default Mode Network of the brain The Arab Spring The Revolutions of 1848 Occupy Wall Street Steve Jobs Think Wrong Neuroplasticity Impostor Syndrome Inner Critic Placebo Effect Meditation If you enjoy the podcast, please rate and review it on iTunes - your ratings make all the difference. Currently she is the Director of Innovation at Stanford's StartX program and has two additional books about to be published. On today's show we discuss why breakthroughs are not accidental, what we've learned about the neuroscience behind epiphanies as well as ways you can realize more of your mind's insights and genius ideas. One of the most fascinating topics we dive is the different modes of the brain. The default mode network is your brain's network composed of 10-13 different areas that are responsible for the creative, innovation and genius. Another mode your brain has is executive mode. Executive mode is just what it sounds like: that part of your brain that makes decisions, executes and puts plans into actions. But here's the kicker: only one part of your brain can be in charge at a time. So if your executive mode is always on your default mode network (or DMN) cannot be running the show. That means if you are constantly engaging your decision-making mind and are in executive mode, your genius ideas have no way to come through. Turning off executive mode is simple: do repetitive tasks that are basically mindless. Like showering or washing the dishes or driving: these are things you already do the executive mode of your brain doesn't need to be engaged in for you to complete them. And that means your DMN can kick in. You can do what high caliber professional athletes do and create little rituals to tell your brain it's time to ramp up or ramp down. Think of baseball players and their rituals: some brush off their shoes in the batter's box and then tap home plate between pitches. They are telling their brains to power on into high performance mode, and slow down. On this episode Olivia and I also discuss the roles uncertainty and shame play in our creative capacities, what we can do to overcome our innate fear of both and why choice minimal lifestyle can be so liberating and freeing for our DMN! You'll want to give this one your full attention, enjoy.
