In this episode of John Solomon Reports, Texas Republican Congressman Keith Self joins to discuss major legislative fights in Washington and the House Freedom Caucus's push for structural reform. Self breaks down his newly proposed Know Your Customer Act, a companion bill to GOP Senator Tom Cotton's measure, which seeks to cut off illegal immigrants from the American banking system and enforce self-deportation by making it impossible for them to remain financially active in the country. Self updates listeners on the tightening timeline for FISA reform ahead of the June 12th deadline, warning of dangerous data broker loopholes and a massive expansion of the surveillance state. In the second segment, California GOP Congressman Jay Obernolte reacts to the state's primary elections, describing how one-party governance in Sacramento, the state capital, has hollowed out the middle class and driven a massive migration to red states. As a leading voice on technology policy, Obernolte provides analysis on the rise of artificial intelligence, outlining the House AI Task Force's focus on content labeling and content authenticity over ineffective watermarking mandates. Lastly, Mark Trammell, CEO of the Center for American Liberty, joins the program to dissect a superseding indictment involving the Southern Poverty Law Center. Trammell details bombshell allegations that the progressive nonprofit used donor dollars to fund shell companies and fictitious bank accounts to pay informants, who allegedly orchestrated, recruited for, and funded extremis t events like the Charlottesville Unite the Right rally to artificially inflate hate-crime perceptions and boost fundraising.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Episode OverviewIn this episode of The Articulate Fly fly fishing podcast, host Marvin Cash sits down with Josh Trammell, Head Guide at Mad River Outfitters in Columbus, Ohio, for a candid look at what it takes to build and sustain a full-time, four-season guide career. Josh covers the Ohio multi-species fishing calendar — smallmouth bass, northern pike, steelhead and carp — along with seasonal guiding in Alaska and destination schools targeting musky and trophy trout.Josh traces his path from catching his first steelhead at age 11 on Elk Creek with Tim Hess — a swung fly — through early years shadowing the Steelhead Alley Outfitters crew of Greg Senyo, Nate Miller and Patrick Robinson, to becoming Head Guide at Mad River Outfitters and a seasonal guide at Naknek River Camp near King Salmon, Alaska. His guide year spans Ohio smallmouth through multiple simultaneous seasonal windows on Lake Erie tributaries and inland rivers, northern pike during their late-winter pre-spawn, steelhead from November through freeze-up and summer Pacific salmon guiding in Alaska. Josh also discusses the January musky school he co-runs with Blane Chocklett and Virginia Trophy Guides in Roanoke, Virginia, spring trout trips to the White River in Arkansas and his growing enthusiasm for carp on the fly. Throughout, he shares practical, unvarnished advice for aspiring full-time guides on the financial realities, logistics and genuine passion required to make it work year-round.Key TakeawaysHow a young angler can break into guide work at reduced financial risk by starting early, staying local and leveraging mentor relationships before major life expenses accumulate. Why the four-season model — cycling through Ohio smallmouth, pike, steelhead, Alaska salmon and destination schools — insulates full-time guides from unpredictable weather far better than single-species operations. When Ohio smallmouth become the most technically versatile species to guide, spanning crayfish dead-drifts, big early-season streamers, scaled-down baitfish imitations and topwater presentations across multiple seasonal phases. Why calibrating each guide day to the individual client's skill level and genuine expectations — rather than chasing personal hero shots — is the real key to repeat business and a sustainable career. How carp on the fly delivers a saltwater-style sight-fishing experience on Ohio freshwater, with few presentations per day and a high premium on reading fish behavior before ever picking up the rod.Why partnering with a full-service fly shop like Mad River Outfitters gives clients a reliable gear and knowledge resource and meaningfully reduces administrative pressure on the guide.Techniques & Gear CoveredJosh guides across a wide technique spectrum that shifts with species and season. Ohio smallmouth receive dead-drifted crayfish patterns in low, clear conditions; big early-season streamers in high or stained water; scaled-down slim-profile baitfish imitations as flows drop through summer; and topwater presentations during the warmest stretches of the year. Steelhead on Steelhead Alley are targeted on both swung flies and indicator rigs, while northern pike receive focused attention during their January and February pre-spawn window — when Ohio weather cooperates. Carp fishing is an increasingly important part of Josh's warm-weather program, using a methodical visual approach borrowed directly from saltwater fly fishing: reading feeding behavior, waiting for clean shot opportunities and presenting deliberately to individual fish, often making no more than 10 to 15 casts in a full day. The annual musky school he leads with Blane Chocklett in Roanoke, Virginia, pairs a one-day tactical masterclass in predator fly techniques with four days of fishing on the water through Virginia Trophy Guides.Locations & SpeciesJosh's Ohio guiding program covers Lake Erie tributaries and inland rivers in northeastern Ohio, targeting steelhead through the November to freeze-up window and northern pike during the late-winter pre-spawn period. Ohio's multi-phase smallmouth calendar — with pre-spawn, spawning and post-spawn fish available simultaneously across different tributaries in mid-spring — gives Josh an unusually diverse season that stretches from spring through early fall. Carp are pursued on Ohio's clearer flatwater fisheries using visual sight-fishing methods, providing a reliable warm-weather alternative when smallmouth and pike waters run high and off-color. For destination work, Josh guides Pacific salmon at Naknek River Camp on the drainage near King Salmon, Alaska through summer; pursues musky with Virginia Trophy Guides on rivers outside Roanoke each January; and leads spring trout trips targeting caddis and sulphur hatches on the White River near Flippin and Cotter, Arkansas.FAQ / Key Questions AnsweredHow do you break into a full-time fly fishing guide career?Josh emphasizes starting young when bills and financial obligations are minimal — shadowing established guides on both working trips and fun-fishing days, learning how programs are structured and how to rig for different conditions. Building genuine relationships within a regional guide community, as Josh did with the Steelhead Alley Outfitters crew, opens the doors to early opportunities. He cautions that anyone entering the guide game with significant financial obligations should plan carefully around Mother Nature's ability to cancel trips and budget realistically for the shoulder seasons. What does a full four-season guide year look like in Ohio?Starting in mid-spring, Josh runs Ohio smallmouth across multiple simultaneous seasonal windows on Lake Erie tributaries and inland rivers, alongside pike fishing that extends through warm weather. He transitions to Alaska for Pacific salmon guiding through early October, returns for a brief Ohio window before steelhead season opens in November and then runs Steelhead Alley through December freeze-up. Winter brings the annual musky school in Roanoke, Virginia with Blane Chocklett; spring opens destination trout trips on the White River in Arkansas; and carp provide a flexible alternative when other fisheries are unfishable. Why are Ohio smallmouth such a compelling guide species?Unlike steelhead, which Josh describes as largely limited to swung or indicator-presented flies, Ohio smallmouth accommodate a wide range of techniques across multiple seasonal phases — from large early-season streamers in blown-out water to crayfish patterns in low, clear conditions to topwater presentations on summer flows. That tactical variety keeps guides and clients engaged across a far longer window than most single-species programs allow. The overlapping seasonal stages across different river systems also mean a thoughtful guide can almost always find smallmouth in a fishable phase somewhere in the region. What is the key to being a successful fishing guide?Josh argues that the most important skill is calibrating each day to the individual client's actual skill level and genuine expectations — not the guide's own benchmark for a good outing. A beginner who lands several smallmouth while mastering a 30- to 40-foot cast has had an excellent day by their measure, which may look very different from a guide's definition of success. Open communication between guide and client about what they actually want from the day smooths out the experience and builds the kind of relationship that generates return bookings. How does carp fishing on the fly compare to other species in Josh's program?Josh describes carp as the closest freshwater equivalent to saltwater sight fishing available in Ohio — standing, hunting, watching and waiting before making deliberate presentations to individual fish rather than covering water. On a productive day with 10 shots at fish, he may cast only 10 to 15 times total, making each presentation count. High-water years that push smallmouth and pike fisheries off-color or out of shape have accelerated his carp development, and he now relies on it as a consistent warm-weather alternative when other species aren't cooperating.SponsorsThanks to TroutRoutes for sponsoring this episode. Overview When asked about how they would give away money, or about how to have a moral career, the leading LLMs typically give answers in an EA spirit, and informed by thinking from people and organizations in the EA community. In many cases the term “effective altruism”, and/or EA jargon, are used explicitly. The flavor of EA they tend to endorse is relatively middle of the road: supporting effective global health charities with their money and recommending existential risk reduction, especially via AI risk, as the most moral career. Grok, in line with xAI's mission for it, emphasizes that it values space exploration and truth-seeking, e.g. via funding scientific research. But to my reading, the EA tendency doesn't seem more pronounced in Claude than in ChatGPT or Gemini. So it's probably not a result of explicit effort by AI developers in the EA community, but a reflection of the reality that, with respect to some very broad moral questions, answers proposed by people in the EA orbit have become a sort of common sense. This is a remarkable accomplishment. Indeed, if these answers tell us much about how the models will behave when given more autonomy, this could be [...] ---Outline:(00:10) Overview(02:18) Prompts(03:40) Results(03:57) Scoring procedure(05:41) Summary(07:00) Full scores --- First published: May 12th, 2026 Source: https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/BEjbvCvNLuRk9y4Su/the-ais-seem-like-eas-a-quick-look-at-two-prompts --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Paul Trammell, author of the book Until They Bury Me.  Paul Trammell lives on a sailboat, currently at anchor in Bocas del Toro, Panama. He is the author of ten books and co-author of three more. His latest, Identity Crisis, is a nautical thriller inspired by his taking on a sailing hitchhiker and his mother's resulting fear for his safety. This follows his psychological thriller Until They Bury Me, which explores the dangers of falling in love too fast and assuming your college sweetheart is still the person you loved years ago.   Paul has also written many nonfiction books, his latest being Sailing to Newfoundland. He is also the author of two self-help books about alcoholism (he is ten-years sober), the latest of which is The Joy of Living Clean and Sober. And he writes short stories (most of which are sci-fi) and poetry. These can be found on his Substack page.   Paul writes and podcasts full time, but also finds time to surf, spearfish, and sail. His two podcasts are Offshore Sailing and Cruising with Paul Trammell and Dream Chasers and Eccentrics. His website is paultrammell.com   In her book review, Carole O'Neill wrote: While there are moments of debauchery, madness and sensuality, this psychological thriller, written by Paul Trammell, takes you on quite an interesting ride. We meet Chris, an ex-con, who has just discovered his high school sweetheart, Azalea is divorced from her first husband and available. Their reunion goes so well they get married a few days later. Then his problems begin.   She sees things and talks to people who are not really there. He tries to understand what is happening to her, and even attempts to convince her he also sees the man in the grey suit. Soon he feels the need to rent an apartment across the street so he can watch her in action. When he realizes he will be responsible for covering all of her expenses, as well as the monthly rent, he gets involved with organized crime to pay the bills.   It's not very often that I'm unable to guess the ending of a story. Trammell keeps shifting the clues so that alternating layers of reality kept me guessing until the very end. I was caught by surprise with this one. This story has a great ending. In this episode, I sit down with drummer Kim Trammell for an honest, wide-ranging conversation about groove, identity, longevity, and finding your way back to joy in music. Kim is an intensely musical player whose feel, touch, and sound are unmistakable, and this conversation traces her path from early classical training to decades of professional drumming in Memphis and beyond. We talk about how her background in piano and orchestral percussion shaped her approach to the drum set, why timpani was such a formative instrument for her, and how classical technique translated naturally into tone, touch, and control on the kit.Kim shares her early musical story, starting with Suzuki piano at a young age, followed by rudimental snare drum training and a strong classical percussion education at the University of Memphis. She explains how she never took formal drum set lessons, instead transferring everything she learned in orchestral percussion into real-world playing situations. We talk about the importance of sound production, the influence of Fred Hinger's timpani approach, and why understanding how to pull sound from an instrument matters more than simply hitting it.A significant chapter of the conversation centers on Kim's years playing professionally in Memphis, including formative experiences on Beale Street and a pivotal five-year house gig at a casino in Tunica, Mississippi. Kim describes playing eight hours a day across constantly changing genres, learning how to truly listen, and developing pocket by following seasoned musicians who demanded restraint, patience, and deep time feel. She reflects on how those experiences reshaped her sense of groove, taught her how to place notes behind the beat, and forever changed how she hears music. We also dive into Kim's decision to step away from full-time performing and pursue a second career as a massage therapist. She speaks candidly about burnout, the physical toll of decades of drumming, and the emotional cost of turning music into a constant source of income. Kim explains how studying body mechanics and healing work transformed her relationship to her own body and helped her rediscover music as a source of joy rather than obligation. We talk about posture, self-care, and why musicians so often neglect their bodies until something breaks. The conversation turns deeply personal as Kim and I discuss sobriety, presence, and self-forgiveness. Kim shares her long journey of choosing sobriety, recognizing unhealthy patterns, and reclaiming clarity, health, and emotional honesty. We talk about how the music industry can normalize destructive habits, why change is frightening but necessary, and how being fully present is one of the greatest gifts musicians can give themselves and others. We also explore Kim's perspective on social media, identity, and self-worth. She reflects on joining Instagram later in life, why she shares music without chasing validation, and the dangers of tying personal value to views, likes, and algorithms. Kim speaks powerfully about separating self-worth from musical ability, encouraging younger musicians to protect their mental health and remember that music is something they do, not who they are.We close by talking about groove, pocket, bass, and drum relationships, favorite drummers, Memphis's rich musical legacy, and the importance of honoring the song above all else. This is a thoughtful, vulnerable, and profoundly human conversation about music, healing, and staying connected to what matters most.Thank you for listening. Send us a textWhat happens when traditional masculinity meets modern mental health needs? Dr. Tim Hess, licensed psychologist and Associate Director for Clinical Services at Ball State University's Counseling Center, joins Dr. Beth Trammell to unpack the complex world of men's mental health in this thought-provoking conversation. From the moment Dr. Hess introduces his metaphor of "deciding when to stop yelling at the tsunami and start surfing," listeners are drawn into a nuanced exploration of how masculinity scripts shape men's emotional lives. Drawing from his extensive experience working with college-age men, Tim reveals how traditional Western masculinity ideologies—focused on achievement, emotional control, and independence—continue to influence how men perceive themselves and their emotional needs, even as these scripts evolve across generations. One of the most powerful insights emerges when discussing romantic relationships: many young men place all their emotional eggs in one relationship basket, leaving them devastated and without support when that relationship ends. This leads to the profound observation that "the moment you need a friend is not the moment to build friendship"—a universal truth that resonates far beyond the realm of men's mental health.Throughout the episode, Dr. Trammell and Dr. Hess navigate the delicate balance of recognizing patterns in masculine socialization while honoring individual differences. They explore how therapy provides a safe space for vulnerability, the challenges men face in building meaningful friendships, and the often-undiscussed impact of body image and sexual performance concerns on men's self-perception.Whether you're a mental health professional, someone who identifies as male, or simply interested in understanding how gender expectations shape emotional wellbeing, this conversation offers valuable insights into creating more supportive environments where vulnerability is welcomed rather than stigmatized. Join us for this engaging discussion and tune in next week when Dr. Hess returns to tackle the increasingly relevant topic of self-diagnosis.Support the showwww.bethtrammell.com
