The Phillies Show: A Phillies podcast with Ruben Amaro Jr., Jim Salisbury and Todd Zolecki
Todd Zolecki, Jim Salisbury and Ruben Amaro Jr.
The Phillies had a chance to sweep the Braves last week before losing Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader.Still, the Phillies had momentum entering this weekend's series against the Brewers. But Milwaukee pummeled the Phillies, sweeping them at Citizens Bank Park for the first time since 2014. Almost everything went wrong. Sure, the Phils were without Bryce Harper, who is recovering from a HBP on his right elbow. But the pitching was bad at times, while the defense was arguably worse. We get into the bad and the ugly, plus a shakeup to the pitching staff.Get 20% off your first Slab Pack or card purchase by going to ArenaClub.com/FOUL and use code FOUL.It's “Best Week” by Manco & Manco Pizza! Braves right-hander Spencer Strider drilled Bryce Harper on the right elbow with a 95-mph fastball on Tuesday.Harper got lucky. X-rays were negative. He suffered only a bruise. But it's the third time in the last four games that Harper has been hit by a pitch. Phillies fans want vengeance. But will they get it? Does it have to happen before Atlanta leaves town on Thursday? When's the right time to do it?We also talk about Ranger Suárez's solid effort in Tuesday's 2-0 victory, and dissect some good and bad base running from the past few days. The Phillies Show is partnering with Shibe Vintage Sports to give away a different vintage Phillies hat each week! It looked like Aaron Nola's early-season struggles were been behind him. After starting the season 0-5 with a 6.45 ERA, he had a 3.33 ERA in his last four starts. But in Game 2 of a doubleheader against St. Louis on Wednesday night, Nola suffered the worst start of his career. He allowed a career-high 12 hits, a career-high nine runs and tied a career-high three home runs allowed in a 14-7 loss. How concerned should we be about Nola? Why did Rob Thomson have Nola start the fourth inning after he allowed five runs in the third? The Phillies won Game 1, 2-1, behind two excellent performances from right-handers Jordan Romano and Orion Kerkering. The Phillies have won five consecutive series following Sunday night's 3-0 victory over Cleveland. They are 11-3 since they lost their series opener in Chicago late last month. It's the best record in baseball in that span. Kyle Schwarber is a big reason why. He hit two homers Sunday against the Guardians. He has hit 14 homers this season, which is tied with Aaron Judge for the most in baseball. He has a 46-game on-base streak. The Phillies are not only hitting, but they're pitching well and playing good defense. It's “Best Week” by Manco & Manco Pizza! The Phillies won two of three from Arizona this weekend at Citizens Bank Park. They have three consecutive series since getting swept in New York late last month. The offense is heating up. It is batting .276 with 13 home runs and an .806 OPS in the last eight games. But physical and mental errors keep popping up, and you wonder what might have happened in Sunday's series finale if the Phillies played cleaner in the field. It's “Best Week” by Manco & Manco Pizza! The Phillies are 17-14 following Thursday night's loss to the Nationals. If the season ended today, they'd be tied with Arizona for the third and final NL Wild Card. We talk about where the Phils are, and where they might be going in the coming months.Where is Taijuan Walker going? He's probably going to the bullpen, even though he has pitched well in his first six starts. That's because Ranger Suárez is rejoining the rotation on Sunday. It's still early, but the Phillies can't play like this forever. They need to get going. The Mets swept the Phillies this week at Citi Field. The Phils have lost 10 of their last 16 games. There are plenty of reasons why. The bullpen continues to struggle. There are cracks in the rotation with Aaron Nola 0-5 and Cristopher Sánchez's left forearm hurting. In case you missed it, Alec Bohm and Brandon Marsh have been going through a terrible start to the 2025 season. But both had important at-bats in Tuesday night's 6-4 victory over the Giants. Marsh's sacrifice fly in the second inning gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead. Bohm's base hit in the sixth inning gave the Phillies the lead. Afterward, Harper had some philosophical thoughts about players struggling in the big leagues:“I just want [Bohm] to enjoy the game. Life could be a lot harder. Life can be a lot tougher. We get to play this beautiful game every day. I was standing in the on-deck circle in the third inning and I was thinking about it, 'Man, it's a great game we get to play.' Obviously, you're going to get your ups and downs in life and in the season. It's a hard thing to do. It is. But at the end of the day, we're all healthy, we're all strong. Just go out there and enjoy it because it'll go quick and you'll start thinking to yourself, 'Why did I take it so serious? And it's gone now.'”Schedule your PXG golf club fitting today at PXG.com/foul to save up to 20% on your entire order. Alec Bohm hit a rocket to Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies in his first at-bat on Thursday night in Atlanta.Albies caught it. Bohm flipped his bat. Bohm went 0 for 5 in the Phillies' 4-2 loss in 11 innings at Truist Park. He is batting .160 with no home runs, three RBIs and a .356 OPS in his first 11 games. He is struggling. It shows. Edmundo Sosa made the catch of his life in the first inning on Tuesday night in Atlanta, but a huge mistake in left-center field involving both Sosa and center fielder Johan Rojas cost the Phillies the game. Title: Beat L.A.: Phillies win series against “unbeatable” DodgersSomebody asked J.T. Realmuto on Friday about playing the Dodgers and he joked that he heard they were “unbeatable.”Well, the Phillies handed L.A. its first two losses of the season in a series win at Citizens Bank Park. Does it mean anything in the long run? No, but it showed skeptics that the Phillies can not only hang with anybody, but they can beat anybody. We talk about the series against the Dodgers, including Sunday's 8-7 comeback victory. We talk about the good things like Nick Castellanos' grand slam, José Alvarado's latest dominant effort and more. Shortly after the Phillies optioned Garrett Stubbs to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday, he joined The Phillies Show to talk about a difficult day, how he plans to tackle his new job in Triple-A, what he will miss most in the Phillies' clubhouse and more. Stubbs is one of the most popular players in the Phillies' clubhouse in recent memory, and it's not just because he curated the “Phils Win” playlist on Spotify and celebrated clinchers with the best of them. He worked hard behind the scenes, helping pitchers prepare for their starts and more. He brought a lot to the table, and some of those qualities showed during his chat with us.Go to SpotandTango.com/foul and use code foul to get 50% off your first order.Love The Phillies Show? Trea Turner is probably going to be the Phillies' leadoff hitter on Opening Day.He came to camp trying to make better decisions at the plate, and trying to hit the ball to the opposite field more.
