The Winter Meetings begin in earnest tomorrow, and the Orioles are already making waves as they look to bounce back from a miserable 2025 season and make their way back to the postseason in 2026. Taylor Ward and Ryan Helsley have been brought in to revitalize the lineup and the backend of the bullpen, and a reunion with Andrew Kittredge adds more solid backend bullpen help. But the Orioles don't seem to be close to done and have been seriously linked to just about all the big names out there. Framber Valdez, Michael King, Ranger Suare, Kyle Schwarber, and Pete Alonso. Could one or multiple of these players be running down the orange carpet on March 26th? Paul and Zach get into that and more on our Winter Meetings Preview right here on The Bat Around!
Anthony Franco joins Darragh McDonald to discuss the Mets trading Brandon Nimmo to The Rangers for Marcus Semien and what moves those teams could make next, why the Orioles sent Grayson Rodriguez to the Angels for Taylor Ward, what last week's signing of Josh Naylor means for the Mariners moving forward, if the Braves will play Mauricio Dubon at shortstop or still look to bring back Ha-Seong Kim, some surprising players that were tendered contracts, and what players accepting qualifying offers says about the free-agent market and a potential lockout next year.
On this week's episode, we begin by looking at the 2025 BBWWA HOF Ballot, and which players we think have the best chance of reaching Cooperstown. From there, we discuss the Mets and Rangers swapping Marcus Semien and Brandon Nimmo, and the Angels and Orioles swapping Taylor Ward and Grayson Rodriguez. To wrap up, we discuss the last managerial opening being filled with Warren Schaeffer's return as manager of the Rockies, new TV deals between MLB and NBC, Netflix, and ESPN, and Raisel Iglesias' return to the Braves as their closer.
We're pretty sure that the surprises of the Baltimore Orioles offseason are just beginning. Luke Jones and Nestor discuss where Mike Elias will go next in search of improving a last-place roster still in need of more pitching and punch than whatever help Taylor Ward will bring from Anaheim in the absence of Grayson Rodriguez. The post Luke Jones and Nestor discuss Orioles offseason and direction after Grayson Rodriguez deal first appeared on Baltimore Positive WNST.
Ed, Rob, and Jeremy took some time from Tuesday's BBMS to talk O's with The Baltimore Sun's Jacob Calvin Meyer. The O's made one big move already this offseason, trading for LA's Taylor Ward, but will they make another move for a big power bat? Hear why JCM feels they will not be in on guys like Pete Alonso or Kyle Tucker.

On Episode 1032 of Hittin' Season, The Good Phight's John Stolnis, Justin Klugh of Baseball Prospectus and Liz Roscher, Editor of SABR's Baseball Research Journal discuss the trades involving Taylor Ward, Marcus Semien and Brandon Nimmo and how they affect the Phillies, the chances Kyle Schwarber signs with the Pirates or Reds, three non-tendered players of potential interest, and an interview with MLB.com's Todd Zolecki on the 20th anniversary of the trade that sent Jim Thome away from the Phillies to make room for Ryan Howard. Segment 1 – News and Notes1.We had our first significant trade of the season as the Orioles traded Grayson Rodriguez to the Angels for Taylor Ward.a.Both teams are starved for pitching, and while G-Rod has never been healthy, he has good stuff with four years of team control. Taylor Ward becomes a free agent after this season.b.Unless the Orioles haven't told us that G-Rod's arm will fall off at some point next season, it's hard not to like this for the Angels. I will say, the Angels did not do a physical. I'm thinking that was part of the deal – you're buying low, so no give-backzy. 2.Raisel Iglesias signed back with the Braves. He had stretch where he was awful and lost his job. Is he the closer going into camp? Is he somebody you're comfortable drafting as a closer?3.Non-tendered players – Surprised, any worries they will sign somewhere?a.Adolis Garica (OF, Tex)i.Who gets his playing time?b.Nathaniel Lowe (1B, Bos)c.Christopher Morel (DH, TB)d.Alek Manoah (Atl, RHP)4.Kazuma Okamoto was posted. What do we know about him?Segment 2 – Fantasy Questions of the NL East – Marlins, Mets, Phillies, and NatsMiami Marlins1.Jakob Marsee – Let's hear it.a.AB, HR, SB, and BA – 12 HR, 35 SB, .2702.I know you've been a big fan of Connor Norby in the past. In a bit over a half-season, he went 8-8, making him a 15-15 player with a .250ish batting average. That's not an awful player, but he's been drafted as one. His ADP is 387, and he's the 30th third baseman off the board.a.What are your thoughts on Noby this season? Are you interested?3.Kyle Stowers had his breakout last season, posting a .288 batting average with 25 home runs in only 117 games. He's going as the 28th outfielder off the board.a.Would you feel good about him being your #2 outfielder?4.Sandy Alcantara was terrible last season, and now he's the 66th pitcher off the board (50th starter). I think I recall you saying you wanted him to pitch poorly last year, so he would drop in 2026. Has he dropped enough for you to be interested?5.When Ryan Weather has played, he's been ok. Unfortunately, he seems always to be hurt. He's the 120th pitcher off the board (call it 85 to 90th starter) – your 6th starter. Is that someone who interests you at the moment, or is it a pass?6.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)New York Mets1.The Mets appear to be moving on from Pete Alonso so they can move Vientos to first and Baty to third. Do you like this move or do you believe the Mets will keep Alonso?a.Baty's ADP is 259 and Vientos is 256. Who would you rather have?2.Francisco Alvarez started to show signs of being an impact player, slugging 11 home runs in 76 games. He'll just be 24 next season. Over/Under 20 home runs?3.Will Jeff McNeil be the full-time second baseman for the Mets in 2026? He's on the last year of his contract?4.Kodai Senga posted decent numbers in 2025, posting a 3.02 ERA with 109 strikeouts and 55 walks. However, he spent time in the minor leagues and continues to struggle throwing strikes?a.Stat line for 2026: wins, ERA, and K'sb.There's been rumors that the Mets will trade him this winter? What say you?5.Who will be the Mets closer in 2026?6.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)Philadelphia Phillies1.The Phillies could lose several players to free agency, including Kyle Schwarber and JT Realmuto. Do they resign these guys or try to get younger?a.I guess the problem is, are there minor league players that can step in or do they need to dip into free agency?2.Related to #1, the Phillies team still has Harper, Turner, and Cristopher Sanchez, but overall, the team doesn't look great. Dumbroski always finds a way, but is this a playoff contender for 2026?3.Andrew Painter – 2026 stats – IP, ERA, K's4.Zach Wheeler is expected to be back by the end of May. Before the injury, he was one of the best pitchers in baseball, but he had TOS surgery, which doesn't have a great track record for pitchers. He's the 52nd pitcher off the board, or the 39th starting pitcher off the board. Do you feel comfortable with Wheeler being a stronger #3 starter on your team? He was a top 5 pitcher selected in 2025.5.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)
Ben Lindbergh and Meg Rowley banter about Aaron Judge having been teammates with both Taylor Ward and Tyler Wade, a revelation about the late-season health of Elly De La Cruz, and the hidden value of multiposition players such as Mauricio Dubón, then (38:22) answer listener emails about the terms “baseball lifer” and “double-barrel action,” when […]
The offseason is in full swing, and the Orioles have been one of the most active teams as we approach December. Former first round pick and top pitching prospect, Grayson Rodriguez, is now an Angel with Taylor Ward coming to the Orioles in return. Did the Orioles get better, or did they give up too much for a hitter with one year of control remaining? Are the Orioles still in the market for another bat, and what does Grayson's departure mean for the rest of the pitching staff? Zach Moore is back to discuss that and more with Paul on The Bat Around!
Kevin is in the spotlight this morning as he previews the upcoming Eagles vs. Cowboys game. He appreciates Jalen Hurts' willingness to own both his successes and shortcomings on the field. While some may find Hurts' relentless work ethic off-putting, Kevin believes the winning results that stem from it are universally admired. The discussion then shifts to the Phillies, who recently missed out on acquiring Taylor Ward, now traded to the Orioles. Kevin notes that there may be three to four players on the MLB roster who could be on the move. Additionally, the conversation touches on the recent successes of the 76ers and Flyers, who have both secured impressive victories in the last few days. As the show comes to a close, the hosts express their gratitude for the positive influences in Philadelphia sports and their personal lives.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

EP 107: Baltimore swaps Grayson Rodriguez for Taylor Ward by MASN
Welcome to Episode 118 of Tablesetters. The offseason opened with a major move, as Josh Naylor signed a five-year deal with the Seattle Mariners, immediately reshaping the first-base market. His return reinforces Seattle's lineup core and removes one of the most dependable bats from free agency. We break down why the deal came together quickly, why other teams never seriously entered the mix, and how his signing affects clubs still searching for first-base or middle-of-the-order help. Midway through the live show, the conversation shifted when news broke that the Orioles traded Grayson Rodriguez to the Angels for Taylor Ward. Rodriguez missed the entire 2025 season with arm injuries, but the Angels are betting on the upside he showed before the setbacks. Ward, under control through 2026, gives Baltimore a steady right-handed bat and immediate outfield stability. We break down how the trade fits each team's broader offseason plan and what it suggests about their priorities moving forward. The episode also covers one of the most unusual qualifying-offer cycles since the system's creation. Four players accepted the QO — Trent Grisham, Gleyber Torres, Shota Imanaga, and Brandon Woodruff — marking the first time more than three players have taken it in the same offseason. Grisham's decision is the most surprising, coming off a breakout 34-homer season in a thin outfield market. His acceptance raises the Yankees' payroll above the third luxury-tax tier and signals a calculated one-year bet on himself. Torres returns to Detroit looking for a healthier 2026 after playing through a sports hernia. Imanaga chose a reset with Chicago after a late-season downturn, and Woodruff accepted as expected as he continues his recovery from shoulder surgery. On the other side, nine players rejected the QO — Kyle Tucker, Kyle Schwarber, Bo Bichette, Framber Valdez, Dylan Cease, Ranger Suárez, Edwin Díaz, Zac Gallen, and Michael King — a group largely expected to pursue multi-year deals despite draft-pick compensation. Their decisions, combined with Grisham coming off the board, further thin the center-field market and shift clubs toward potential trade options. This QO cycle reflects a winter shaped by uncertainty around future labor conditions, stricter tax penalties, and mixed performances from several major free agents. In San Diego, the Padres' ownership evaluation remains ongoing. The Seidler family is formally exploring a potential sale while working through internal disputes and long-term financial considerations. The front office maintains a “business as usual” stance, but the review introduces real questions about payroll strategy and organizational stability heading into 2026. Award season added another layer to a busy week. Shohei Ohtani earned another unanimous MVP, and Aaron Judge secured his third after a tightly contested race. On the pitching side, Tarik Skubal won his second straight AL Cy Young Award, and Paul Skenes captured the NL honor just a year after winning Rookie of the Year — a rare progression that underscores how quickly he has become one of the league's most impactful pitchers. In Washington, the Nationals introduced Drew Butera as their new manager, making him the youngest skipper in Major League Baseball in more than 50 years. His development-focused background aligns with the organization's larger reset under Paul Toboni. The 2026 Hall of Fame ballot was also released, featuring returning candidates such as Carlos Beltrán and Andruw Jones along with first-time names including Cole Hamels, Ryan Braun, and Matt Kemp.
