The Phillies are 17-14 following Thursday night's loss to the Nationals. If the season ended today, they'd be tied with Arizona for the third and final NL Wild Card. We talk about where the Phils are, and where they might be going in the coming months.Where is Taijuan Walker going? He's probably going to the bullpen, even though he has pitched well in his first six starts. That's because Ranger Suárez is rejoining the rotation on Sunday. We discuss how the Phillies should handle Suárez and Walker, and who might get bumped from the bullpen to make room for Walker. They say Delco's a lot … and they're right. 2024 Divisional Round - Games Three and Four Game three in a divisional round is always a pivotal matchup in a series, especially when the series is tied at a game apiece. If the higher seed can take the game, they will regain home field advantage, but if they fail, then they face elimination on the road. The Mets blew an opportunity to be up two games to none against the Phillies after a wild game two. They will have Sean Manaea, the unlikely ace for New York, on the mound for them against Aaron Nola, perhaps the bygone ace for Philadelphia. Manaea has really found his groove in the second half, but he has had some past trouble in the playoffs. Nola has been a stalwart for Philly, and he knows these Mets quite well, though of course they are quite familiar with him. For game four, the Mets will send out Jose Quintana and the Phillies will call upon Ranger Suárez. These two lefties have had almost polar opposite seasons. Quintana struggled early, like many Mets, but has been dominant in the final months of the season. Suárez, on the other hand, was otherworldly to begin the year, but has been downright awful to close the year. Both of these guys have been fantastic in their postseason careers, and will look to live up to that reputation. Ultimately this series will come down to the performances from the teams' respective stars. Can Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso keep providing magical moments? Can Bryce Harper and Trea Turner come through with runners in scoring position? Things have gotten pretty testy between the Dodgers and Padres in this series, as we head to the raucous crowd at Petco Park. The Dodgers will send Walker Buehler to the hill against Michael King. The former Vanderbilt star has struggled since returning from injury, but he hopes to recapture his electric postseason form. The young Padres ace was brilliant against Atlanta in the Wild Card round, but he will have his work cut out for him against this deep Dodger lineup. Game four will likely be a bullpen game for LA, and while Dylan Cease is scheduled to go on short rest, expect manager Mike Shildt to have a tight leash. For the Dodgers to get back to the NLCS, they are going to need Mookie Betts snap out of his postseason funk. For San Diego, they are hoping that Fernando Tatis, Jr. stays red hot. Do not be shocked if we return to LA for a decisive game five. Sheil and Anthony Dabbundo discuss the starts by Sean Manaea and Aaron Nola, the offense going silent yet again, and the bullpen being a complete disaster. The Phillies got to Kansas City this weekend in desperate need for a good series, and for some good at-bats.They got both. They won the series against the Royals. They scored 11 runs on both Saturday and Sunday. It was their first time scoring 10 or more runs in consecutive games since Aug. 6-7, 2022. It was very encouraging to see players like J.T. Realmuto, Bryson Stott, Brandon Marsh and Garrett Stubbs have big weekends. But it wasn't just the offense. The Phillies got some good pitching from Ranger Suárez, who rejoined the rotation, and No. 6 starter Kolby Allard, who threw the ball well on Sunday. Conversely, are the Phillies reaching the end with Taijuan Walker? His next turn into the rotation is uncertain. You can watch the show on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ThePhilliesShowKeep up with the show here:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thephilliesshow/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thephilliesshowX: https://twitter.com/thephilliesshowThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thephilliesshowFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559185425483The Phillies Show is part of the Foul Territory Network. The Braves were dealt a big blow Sunday as Ozzie Albies suffered a fractured wrist and will miss eight weeks. Also, the Hall of Fame welcomed the Class of ‘24 and Jorge Soler and Shohei Ohtani needed just two swings to smash 951 feet worth of homers. On today's episode … ACT 1: THE BIG STORIES (0:41-6:22) In the ninth inning of the Braves' loss to the Cardinals Ozzie Albies awkwardly snagged his glove on a baserunner's shoulder. It immediately didn't look good and the news wasn't good as X-rays revealed a broken left wrist. In Cooperstown, Todd Helton, Adrian Beltré, Joe Mauer and Jim Leyland were inducted into the Hall of Fame, and not to be outdone, Jorge Soler crushed a 478-foot homer for the Giants at Coors – MLB's longest of the season – and Shohei Ohtani followed suit with a 473-footer of his own on Sunday Night Baseball. ACT 2: WHIPAROUND (6:22-8:30) Elsewhere around the Majors, the Yankees and Rays traded home runs – and slow home run trots – in a Tampa Bay win, Royals righty Seth Lugo strengthened his AL Cy case with a three-hitter against the White Sox, the Mariners overcame a Yordan Alvarez cycle to salvage the series finale against the Astros, and the Phillies put an end to the Pirates' six-game win streak. ACT 3: LOOKING AHEAD (8:30-9:17) No fewer than four Cy Young candidates take the mound tonight as Tarik Skubal and the Tigers hit the road to battle the Guardians, the Braves and Reynaldo López host the Reds, Ranger Suárez toes the rubber for the Phillies in Minnesota, and the visiting Red Sox and Tanner Houck match up against the Rockies. There are eight days remaining before the July 30 trade deadline, and the Phillies have needs. One of them popped up on Friday, when José Alvarado blew a save in Pittsburgh. Alvarado hasn't been as sharp as seasons past, perhaps reinforcing the front office's belief that it needs to fortify the bullpen with another late-inning veteran reliever. The Phillies need a right-handed-hitting outfielder, too. Weston Wilson has played well since he replaced Whit Merrifield. Could he actually step up and fill that role, or must the Phillies find somebody else? Fortunately for the Phillies, Tyler Phillips has stepped up as the team's No. 5 starter. The local kid shut down Pittsburgh in Sunday's series finale, snapping the Phillies' three-game losing streak to avoid a sweep. There are a few things that have impressed Ruben, Jim and Todd's about the rookie's early performances. They discussed. The Phillies open a three-game series on Monday night in Minnesota. Ranger Suárez and Zack Wheeler are back. What do we hope to see from both of them? Plus, some late-inning food talk including walleye-on-a-stick and Juicy Lucys. The Phillies won a franchise-record 62 games before the All-Star break. They sent a franchise-record eight players to the All-Star Game. There's 11 days until the July 30 trade deadline. There's less than 11 weeks before the postseason. Ruben, Jim and Todd discuss a few storylines to follow for the Phillies in the second half: Zack Wheeler and Ranger Suárez returning to dominance following recent back issues. Just keeping everything healthy and effective entering the postseason. Who do the Phillies get before the July 30 trade deadline? It would be great to see Bryson Stott, Seranthony Domínguez and others pick it up in the second half. Can Bryce Harper win a third NL MVP? Can Zack Wheeler win his first NL Cy Young? Can Trea Turner win the Phillies' first NL batting title since 1958? The Phillies lost two of three this weekend in Atlanta, but they still have an eight-game lead in the NL East. Also, help is on the way. Kyle Schwarber will be activated from the injured list before Tuesday night's series opener against the Dodgers. There is a chance Bryce Harper is activated, too. If not Tuesday, then perhaps before the end of the series. Ruben, Jim and Todd talk about getting Schwarber and Harper back before the break. The Phillies have a franchise-record seven players going to the All-Star Game in Texas: Harper, Trea Turner, Alec Bohm, Zack Wheeler, Ranger Suárez, Jeff Hoffman and Matt Strahm. There were some emotional reactions in the clubhouse when Rob Thomson announced those names. Which selections jumped out to the guys? J.T. Realmuto comes back after the All-Star break. On today's episode: Act I: THE BIG STORIES (0:54-2:57) In their first home game since Willie Mays' passing, the Giants all wore No. 24 to pay homage to the Say Hey Kid. Then, in true Hollywood fashion, they rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to walk off the Cubs. The Phillies turned the first 1-3-5 triple play in 95 years, keying their win over the Tigers. José Ramírez's 20th homer powered the Guardians past Baltimore as they became the third team to reach 50 wins. Still, the play of the night at Camden Yards might have come from a fan who snared a 108.5 mph foul ball with his right hand while clutching his phone and a drink in his left. Act II: WHIPAROUND (6:31-8:16) Vladimir Guerrero Jr. mashed a 471-foot homer -- the longest of his career -- over the Green Monster, but the Red Sox scored five runs in the final two frames to walk off the Blue Jays. Miguel Rojas had two hits in the Dodgers' win over the White Sox, pushing L.A.'s record to 23-0 when he has at least one knock. Elly De La Cruz demolished a two-run homer into the riverboat deck at Great American Ball Park, Rhys Hoskins launched a go-ahead grand slam to lead the Brewers past the defending champs and Jurickson Profar delivered the walk-off knock in San Diego's extra-inning win over Washington. Act III: LOOKING AHEAD (8:16-9:07) Tuesday's slate is highlighted by a premier pitching matchup between the Tigers' Tarik Skubal and the Phillies' Ranger Suárez in Detroit. Skubal is the current AL Cy Young frontrunner, while Suárez is among the top contenders for the award in the NL. The Phillies just signed left-hander Cristopher Sánchez to a four-year contract extension with two club options that could keep him in the Phils rotation through 2030. Ruben and Todd talk about Sánchez's journey, from struggling big leaguer to bona fide stud in arguably Major League Baseball's best rotation. Of course, once one deal is done, it's natural to think about the next. Could an extension be coming for Ranger Suárez? Could the Phillies really sign another starter to a multiyear extension after signing Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola and Sánchez to multiyear deals? Ruben said locking up Ranger is a no-brainer. The guys also discuss the Phillies' No. 5 starter situation with Taijuan Walker on the injured list and Spencer Turnbull taking his place. What happens if Turnbull picks up where he left off, while Walker gets healthy and starts throwing an effective splitter again? Decisions, decisions. The Phillies improve to a major league-best 45-19 with their seventh win in eight games, doing it across the pond. AP correspondent Dave Ferry reports.
The Phillies open a three-game series on Monday night against the Brewers at Citizens Bank Park, which means Rhys Hoskins will be back at the Bank for the first time since his Phillies career officially ended last fall. Ruben, Jim and Todd share their favorite stories and memories about Hoskins, who not only was a productive bat in the middle of the Phillies lineup or years, but a leader in the clubhouse and in the community. The Phillies might have lost Brandon Marsh to the injured list on Sunday night, when he strained his right hamstring. What are the options to replace Marsh in left field? Whit Merrifield, Kody Clemens and Cristian Pache immediately come to mind. Rob Thomson has hinted at Edmundo Sosa possibly seeing time in the outfield once Trea Turner returns. What about options they might have in Triple-A? Ranger Suárez dodged a bullet on Saturday, when a ball struck him in his right hand. He might pitch Saturday in London. He might not. If not, who does? We go back to Spencer Turnbull being one of the baseball's best baseball offseason signings. Follow The Phillies Show on X, Instagram, TikTok, Threads and Facebook.
If you're watching the Phillies, then you know they're off to their best start in franchise history, and the best start in baseball since the 2001 Mariners. Ruben, Jim and Todd try to wrap their minds around the Phillies' historic start, discussing what has jumped out to them and why they believe the players in the clubhouse will maintain their focus and continue to play with an edge the rest of the season. There is plenty of praise for Edmundo Sosa, who has thrived at shortstop while Trea Turner has been on the IL. Ruben also explains what he meant he said he would rub his entire body on Ranger Suárez for good luck, while Jim offers a peek at what will be on his grill this Memorial Day weekend.

The White Sox head to Philadelphia to face the Phillies. Sitting dead last, the White Sox will deal with the pesky bats of multiple home run hitters, with a top three consisting of Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, and Bryce Harper. This series can also push the Phillies to first place in the National League East as they are just two games back (at the time of this episode being recorded) from Atlanta. Thankfully we won't see Ranger Suárez in this series, who just tossed a complete game shutout. It was against the Rockies — but it still counts. This will be a tough series, and Nick Nastrini's first real test as an MLB pitcher. Here's what we talked about in this short but fun episode: What's new in Philly? Grading the offseason So many home run hitters That one time we thought Bryce Harper to the White Sox was confirmed Deaths, national disasters, and drive into deep left field by Castellanos Confidence going into 2024 The new City Connect jerseys Pitching matchups Threats, fears, and keys to winning a series Predictions for 2024 John Schriffen, a man of the people You can find Brett on Twitter and follow his writing at Sox on 35th. On this week's episode of The Underdog, your hosts Chris Horwedel and Matt Crone open the show by talking about the growth of Ranger Suárez into a major force for the Phillies rotation. They also talk about the NBA Play-In Tournament, the Jontay Porter suspension, the rise of the Knicks, and much more.
Ranger Suárez tossed his second career shutout on Tuesday. Do the Phillies have the best 1-2-3 combo of any rotation in baseball? The gang discusses it, plus the imminent return of Taijuan Walker and what it means for Spencer Turnbull, and what's behind Johan Rojas' recent improvements at the plate.
Brandon Marsh has returned! The Phillies can play defense in the outfield! We'll see the City Connect jerseys soon! This and more--including Ranger Suárez's spring training shutout--are discussed on Episode 791 of Hittin' Season with Justin Klugh and Liz Roscher.
2023 NLCS - Games 6 and 7 @ Citizens Bank Park Diamondbacks (84-78) @ Phillies (90-72) - PHI leads 3-2 The Snakes stayed alive by winning two out of three in Phoenix, but they will face an uphill battle heading back to Philadelphia. Rob Thomson's Phillies are just a win away from a return to the World Series, and they have been absolutely dominant at home. Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper continue to mash in this championship series, but Trea Turner and Nick Castellanos have been quieted after electric performances against Atlanta. The bullpen (mainly Craig Kimbrel) was shaky in Arizona, blowing leads in games three and four. On the other side, Ketel Marte has been blazing hot, Alek Thomas and Gabriel Moreno have been clutch, and the back of the bullpen (Sewald and Ginkel) have been lights-out. However, star rookie Corbin Carroll has been uncharacteristically absent from the fun. If the Dbacks hope to take this series on the road, they will need him to turn it around and wreak havoc on the bases. After all, ‘Embrace the Chaos' is the motto for Torey Lovullo's scrappy bunch. For the pitching matchups, Aaron Nola and Merrill Kelly face off once again for game six, with Ranger Suárez and Brandon Pfaadt in line for a game seven. Nola was excellent in game two, while Kelly struggled to keep the ball within the cozy confines of Citizens Bank Park. Suárez and Pfaadt both hurled scoreless outings into the sixth inning of game three, but the pressures of a winner-take-all game could make or break these young arms. Will the Phillies secure a second straight NL Pennant, or will the Diamondbacks claim just their second ever trip to the Fall Classic? Audio clips from MLB.tv PHI Radio WIP - Scott Franzke, Larry Andersen, Tom McCarthy, and Kevin Stocker ARI Radio 98.7 - Greg Schulte, Tom Candiotti, Chris Garagiola Catch you next time, P.C.O.
2023 NLCS - Game 3 - 5 @ Chase Field Phillies (90-72) @ Diamondbacks (84-78) The battle for the NL Pennant heads out to the desert, with the Phillies ahead in the series two games to none after convincing victories in Philadelphia. Everything worked just as Rob Thomson planned: the big bats provided power, the defense was flawless, the aces dominated, and the bullpen was solid. But can they bring that show on the road? For Arizona manager Torey Lovullo, there was little to take solace in after the first two games of this series, but don't count out these Snakes. Although their pitching staff is inexperienced, don't be surprised from a good outing from rookie Brandon Pfaadt, who was excellent against LA in the NLDS. He'll have quite the task in tamping down this Philly offense, but he's got impressive stuff on the mound. Opposing him in game three will be Ranger Suárez, who has been quietly establishing himself as a legit playoff weapon these past two seasons. In game four, it will likely be bullpen games for both teams, which isn't ideal for either of these teams. But after that (if necessary) will be a rematch of the aces, Zac Gallen and Zack Wheeler. Expect both managers to extend their horses to their respective limits in that pivotal game. The Snakes need to win at least two out of these three home games if they are to stay alive in the series, but even if they can pull that off, they'll have to return to the Bank. Audio clips from MLB.tv PHI Radio WIP - Scott Franzke, Larry Andersen, Tom McCarthy, and Kevin Stocker ARI Radio 98.7 - Greg Schulte, Tom Candiotti, and Chris Garagiola Catch you next time, P.C.O.
2023 NLDS Phillies (90-72) vs. Braves (104-58) Game 1 - ATL RHP Strider vs. PHI LHP Suárez @ Truist Park Game 2 - ATL LHP Fried vs. PHI RHP Wheeler @ Truist Park Game 3 - PHI RHP Nola vs. ATL RHP Elder @ Citizens Bank Park Game 4 - PHI LHP Suárez vs. ATL RHP Strider @ Citizens Bank Park In a rematch of last year's NLDS, the Braves and Phillies square off once again with a trip to the NLCS on the line. Led by Brian Snitker, Atlanta captured its 6th straight NL East crown, running roughshod through the entire league. This Braves team is an absolute juggernaut, boasting a record setting offense stocked with star power. The team matched the 2019 Twins for the most home runs in a single season with 307, and collectively Atlanta hit like the '27 Yankees, posting a .276/.344/.501 slash line, good for a 124 OPS+. Presumptive NL MVP Ronald Acuna, Jr. led the way with a record setting season of his own (.337/.416/.596 41 HR 106 RBI 149 R 73 SB), but he was far from the only standout. Matt Olson set a Braves record with 54 HR and 139 RBI. Ozzie Albies (33 HR 109 RBI), Austin Riley (37 HR 97 RBI), and Marcell Ozuna (40 HR 100 RBI) all walloped the competition, not to mention All-Star years from catcher Sean Murphy and shortstop Orlando Arcia. Oh, and their pitching was pretty great as well. Ace Spencer Strider (20-5 3.86 ERA 186 IP) set a Braves record for strikeouts in a season with 281. Bryce Elder (12-4 3.81 ERA 174 IP) was an All-Star, and stud Max Fried (8-1 2.55 ERA 77 IP) was nearly unbeatable between his stints on the IL. The bullpen is also stacked with electric back-end arms in Raisel Iglesias, A.J. Minter, and Kirby Yates. Just two years removed from a World Series championship, Atlanta looks to be the heavy favorites heading into the playoffs. But standing in their way are their bitter division rivals, the Philadelphia Phillies. If there is one thing these Phillies know they are not scared of, it is the Atlanta Braves. They bullied them in the NLDS last year en route to the NL Pennant, and while they only went 5-8 against their rival in the regular season, that's far better than most other teams could muster. These Phils are confident, some might even say cocky, but they back it up with their play. Philly can match anybody in terms of star power, with Bryce Harper and Trea Turner. They've got tough guys who can swing a big stick too, in Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber. Perhaps most importantly, with Aaron Nola, Zach Wheeler, and Ranger Suárez, they just might have the pitching to contain the high-powered Atlanta offense. Oh and don't you forget their other not-so-secret weapon, the Bank. No-one else in baseball can claim a better home-field advantage than Philadelphia, who hold the best playoff home winning percentage in baseball history at Citizens Bank Park entering this series. Can they keep the good times rolling, or will Atlanta find a way to spoil the fun? Audio clips from MLB.tv PHI Radio WIP - Scott Franzke, Larry Anderson, Tom McCarthy, Ben Davis TBS - Brian Anderson, Jeff Francoeur Catch you next time, P.C.O.

NHL – Blackhawks to begin rebuild with anticipated pick of Connor Bedard in NHL draft Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson can begin building up his roster again after spending much of the past year tearing it down. Fantilli’s got the size and can put the puck in the net. The Canadian also was only the third freshman to win college hockey’s Hobey Baker player of the year award. Fantilli isn’t worried of what might have been because he can’t play another game or score another goal to improve his resume. Fantilli also says Bedard’s season was phenomenal. Golf – PGA – PGA Tour board reminds players they’ll have vote on final deal with Saudis The PGA Tour is seeking to assure players they will have a say in the tour’s new partnership with the Saudi funders of LIV Golf. The tour’s policy board issued a statement Tuesday noting players would have to approve any final agreement between the once-rival tours. The statement was released after a meeting of the board, which includes five players: Patrick Cantlay, Rory McIlroy, Charley Hoffman, Peter Malnati and Webb Simpson. The framework agreement between the tour and the Saudis says the parties would work together to decide how defectors to LIV Golf can return and what kind of punishment they would face. NFL – History says highly touted rookie TE’s don’t always make a major impact right away This rookie class of tight ends already made quite an impact on the draft. Duran’s homer, his 10th of the season, came on a 3-2 pitch by Brendan White (1-2), the 12th pitch of the at-bat. Texas then pulled away with RBI hits by Corey Seager and Nathaniel Lowe and Adolis Garcia’s two-run homer, all off Anthony Misiewicz. The late barrage made a winner of Josh Sborz (4-2), who gave up a tying homer to Spencer Torkelson in the top of the inning to end Sborz’s run of 17 consecutive scoreless innings. Angels 4, White Sox 2 –Ohtani first AL pitcher in 60 years to homer twice, strike out 10, Angels beat ChiSox Shohei Ohtani became the first American League pitcher in nearly 60 years to hit two homers and strike out 10 batters in a game, leading the Los Angeles Angels past the Chicago White Sox 4-2 in his latest extraordinary performance. Ohtani, who leads the majors with 28 home runs, hit solo shots in the first and seventh innings. It’s first time he has gone deep twice while also pitching. The superstar from Japan struck out 10 in a 6 1/3-inning start that ended because of a cracked fingernail. He’s the sixth player in major league history to homer at least twice and strike out at least 10. Phillies 5, Cubs 1 – Brandon Marsh homers twice as Philadelphia Phillies beat Chicago Cubs 5-1 Brandon Marsh homered twice and drove in three runs, helping the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 5-1 for their second straight win. The lefty exited his start against the Texas Rangers on Monday night after only 15 pitches. Boyd was placed on the 60-day injured list. The Tigers didn’t say when Boyd would have the procedure, commonly known as Tommy John surgery. The timetable for recovery is typically at least 12-14 months. The Tigers have 10 pitchers on the IL. Right-hander Matt Manning was activated from the 60-day IL to start Tuesday against Texas. Left-handed reliever Anthony Misiewicz was recalled from Triple-A Toledo. NHL – Blackhawks to begin rebuild with anticipated pick of Connor Bedard in NHL draft Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson can begin building up his roster again after spending much of the past year tearing it down. That process is expected to begin with the Blackhawks selecting forward Connor Bedard with the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft on Wednesday. Beyond that is when the intrigue begins. The intrigue revolves around when Russian Matvei Michkov is selected, because he is under contract to play in his native Russia through 2025-26. Another question is when the first defenseman goes off the board in what is a top-heavy class of forwards. This NHL draft might have been considered the chase for Adam Fantilli as the top overall pick rather than the Connor Bedard sweepstakes in a different year. So he plans to sit back and enjoy the NHL draft on Wednesday night. The Detroit Red Wings have the 9th and 17th pick.
