In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” Viktor Frankl   “I judge you unfortunate because you have never lived through misfortune. You have passed through life without an opponent—no one can ever know what you are capable of, not even you.” Seneca Today Scott jumps back into the podcast with his good friend Dana Lewis.  He is the CEO of Whole Life Center Baltimore Today's topic is somethings that Dana and Scott are both passionate about and that is men's mental health.  This conversation is for men and the women that love them.  It is time to break the negative stereotype and bring this conversation to the light of day.  There are a few men that I trust to be real and raw with and Dana is one of those men.  His passion and heart to break the cycles of black men and people of color is a driving force in all he does. Project Roots and Wings building a bridge between who you are and who you are  BECOMING! “And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Ephesians 5:21 NLT Today Scott and Emily have a deep conversation with their mentor and friend Dr. David Williams. David was their philosophy and theology professor in college and the person who performed their wedding ceremony.   During the conversation, David takes Scott and Emily back to their memories of classes in college as they wrestle with finding questions to ask amidst topics that are core to them and Project Roots and Wings. David has a distinctly communal and definitively Christian take on marriage.  They discuss how western culture's push towards individualism is impacting marriage. They all have a strong desire to reshape our understanding of Christ and the Gospel, specifically when it comes to marriage.   This was a podcast that Scott and Emily had to take a few days to digest.  When they share their story they always point back to David's positive influence on their lives.  If you are wondering how Scott and Emily have come to understand marriage and life in general, this episode will give you a lot of insight.  Scott and Emily encourage you to come with an open heart and mind and let David's words challenge you, like they challenged them. Integrity - Adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty. Authenticity - Not false or copied, representing one's true nature or beliefs; true to oneself or to the person identified. Humility - Not thinking of yourself as less but thinking of yourself less often. Gratitude - The quality or feeling of being grateful or thankful.   This is not meant to be an exhaustive list.  These are the ones that stuck out to Scott as he was listening and editing.   If you want to be a GOOD man or woman it is imperative that you have core principles that guide you and a community that supports you.   References:   Jeff Addo   Interested in learning more about coaching with us email Scott at: scott@projectrootsandwings.com or go to : www.projectrootsandwings.com

*Over the next several weeks we will be covering key principles or virtues that we believe are important to helping you achieve optimal performance and reach your full potential in every area of your life!     Welcome to our new series, Defining Masculinity.  Today we are looking at self-awareness.  Self-aware is defined as, “having conscious knowledge of one's own character and feelings.”  We are looking at what it is and why it is integral to personal growth and our comprehensive definition of true masculinity.  Today we continue the conversation with a really good friend, Calvin Little Jr.  Calvin is wise beyond his years and today you will get a glimpse as to why that is so.  Self-Awareness is our topic for today.  takes the center place in our conversation about masculinity and manhood.  Please feel free to listen to the last two episodes here, and here   I believe there is a deeply held belief about what it means to be a man. This belief has done unfathomable  damage to a generation of men.  This mindset influences our beliefs and in many ways has defined manhood.  This belief is that vulnerability is a feminine attribute and that showing emotions is weakness. This limited idea of masculinity and what it means to be a man are at the heart of why I am doing this series.  This mindset limits men from reaching their full potential and performing in all areas at optimal levels. These episodes highlight how dangerous this message is to our young boys and young men.  It is a definition of manhood that is rooted in a misunderstanding of gender roles and an errant reading of history and especially theology.  For the Christian man it completely undermines the life of Jesus and his comprehensive modeling of what a man looks like.   Calvin and I have a deep heartfelt conversation about the influence of his father and the importance of mentors and community to help facilitate self-awareness.  We talk about how culture tries to define us in very narrow ways and how this leads to many of the issues that men face today References: Battle Cry: Waging and Winning the War Within by Jason Wilson   You can listen to Calvin and Rhona Little share about marriage in episodes 42 and 43   Email us at: scott@projectrootsandwings.com   Find us at: www.projectrootsandwings.com

*Over the next several weeks we will be covering key principles or virtues that we believe are important to helping you achieve optimal performance and reach your full potential in every area of your life! Our new series, Defining Masculinity, kicks it into high gear today.  Today we continue the conversation with a new friend. Mr. Kahlil Suaray is our oldest son's third grade teacher.  Courage takes the center place in our conversation about masculinity and manhood.  Last week's episode, listen here, set friendship as an important component of a more authentic and comprehensive definition of manhood.  On this episode Courage is the integral and essential virtue that we focus on.  It is my belief that all other conversations in this series will be defined by how we integrate courage into our daily lives.  For this episode courage is understood in the context vulnerability. I believe there is a deeply held belief about what it means to be a man. We are continuing our journey towards creating a life that flourishes, living to your full potential or optimal performance.  These are not ethereal concepts for us at PRW.  These are by products of a life dedicated to excellence and character formation.  Today we are focusing on an integral part of all growth and transformation, FRIENDSHIP!  The man of too many friends [chosen indiscriminately] will be broken in pieces and come to ruin, But there is a [true, loving] friend who [is reliable and] sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24 amplified version I am sure you have heard the phrases it is not good for man to be alone and he who finds a wife finds a good thing.  I want to add to these.  He who has a man or group of men that will walk with him in the darkest of times and carry him when needed and in fact knows the darkest part of you finds a GREAT thing and finds a wellspring of life.  So today and over the next several weeks we will be talking about the definitions of manhood that we have mistakenly accepted and we will begin to paint a more wholistic picture of manhood.  I can't wait to share these episodes with you!   References:   Battle Cry: Waging and Winning the War Within by Jason Wilson   Email us at: scott@projectrootsandwings.com   Find us at: www.projectrootsandwings.com

It is something that needs to be cultivated!  In today's episode Scott and Emily take a deep reflective look back at the last few months of the podcast and the effect that these conversations have had on them.  This episode takes a look at a principle called Cognitive Reframing, “Cognitive reframing is a technique used to shift your mindset so you're able to look at a situation, person, or relationship from a slightly different perspective. ... The essential idea behind reframing is that the frame through which a person views a situation determines their point-of-view.”  Scott shares some deep and vulnerable insights from his own journey toward HOPE through reframing or narrating the past in more truthful and faithful ways.   The HOPE of this episode is that this way of viewing the past is available to everyone and is a powerful tool.  We believe it is also one way that God shows his redeeming work in our midst.   Email us at: scott@projectrootsandwings.com   Find us at: www.projectrootsandwings.com

Last episode Scott and Emily began the conversation about the values or principles one needs to sustain hope in the midst of disappointment in order to leave whatever circumstance well and whole.  They believe this is imperative in order to not repeat the same lessons again and again. Whether it's leaving one place and going to another, a job, or a relationship, HOPE and leaving well don't just happen. Hope is something that needs to be cultivated. In this episode they carry on the metaphor of the house with two more principles - Grit and Character.  These two principles finish the infrastructure of the house, and they believe create the ability to see circumstances as stepping stones and not road blocks. Hope doesn't just happen. It is something that needs to be cultivated.  When it comes to entering 2021 with hope it is necessary to honestly assess the year and ask the hard questions.  How does that happen?  What skills and attributes are needed to be hopeful for a great 2021?  Are these attributes transferable to other life circumstances like leaving a relationship, a job or anything else?  In today's episode Scott and Emily talk about how to create and sustain hope in 2021 and beyond.  They talk about the skills and attributes needed to leave any circumstance, including 2020, whole, healthy, and happy.  Today they highlight two principles that they have been incorporating into their lives for the last four or five years.  They are Gratitude and Hope/Optimism.  Scott and Emily give some examples of how this helped them and others create a life that allows them to enter the next phase of life whole. As 2020 comes to a close, Scott and Emily take a grateful look back.  They explore why so many people they have talked with are saying that 2020 is their best year ever.  In the midst of a global pandemic and shutdown what are some of the principles and trademarks of individuals that are narrating this year as “best ever.” One of the ideas that has shaped Scott and Emily comes from Viktor Frankl and his groundbreaking work in “Man's Search for Meaning.” The idea of happiness and contentment being located internally has been key in setting 2020 up as people's best year ever.  They also highlight what has come to be known as the Stockdale paradox. Stockdale explained this idea in the following way: "You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end — which you can never afford to lose — with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be."  Scott and Emily challenge you with a call to action:  Evaluate your life, find the positives, and build off of them!
