The first-ever UIL-sanctioned state high school water polo champions were crowned last Saturday at the end of a truly historic season. The Foster girls finished the season undefeated, and the Brazoswood boys took down first-year program, Boerne Champion, to hoist the top prize.Joe was there and shares his insights about how the tournament went, and how the UIL appears to feel about it. He and James then gush about how well the first season went, allowing for lots of scheduling confusion and scrambling for coaches at the beginning of the season (expected!).It's here to stay and the UIL has clearly put its mark on the sport in (mostly) very good ways.Plus, news from Austin College's Division III men's season with another trip to the East Coast, news on Team USA coming to North Texas at the end of December, and more on this weekend's "chill" tournament in San Antonio.With the high school season over we'll continue the pod on an irregular schedule. The kiddos of Texas descended on the Cy-Fair Natatorium last weekend where Joe and James faced off in an epic and shouty 12-and-under cage match. At least it wasn't as bad as 2020. The water polo world returned to some sense of normal in 2021 even though Covid was never too far removed. More teams from Texas than ever competed at the Southwest Zone Junior Olympics Qualifying tournament a couple weekends ago, and all of them having qualified, they will now be playing at National Junior Olympics in North Texas at the end of July. James and Joe talk about this huge bit of success for Texas clubs and the forthcoming big tournament.Those Olympics overlap with the other, bigger Olympics, the ones in Tokyo, where the USA Women's Team will attempt to win a third straight gold medal (they will), and the new-look, European-honed men will try to shock the global community by winning one of their own.Plus, Joe reluctantly indulges James' concerns about the recent, and correct, decision by the Supreme Court to dismantle some of the cartel-like characteristics of the NCAA. In between minor bouts of tornado warnings, power outages, and torrential Texas rain the Olympic Development Program season essentially ended in San Antonio last weekend with over 500 athletes from as far as Florida and Hawai'i playing dozens of matches over three days. Not bad for a team that began varsity play in 2019. Texas' only NCAA women's varsity team now owns the distinction of being only the 5th ever program to win a CWPA Division III Championship. So they have already arrived at the final competition of the season, the MPSF Championships in Los Angeles, where they will play their conference nemeses Penn State-Behrend, and one of the top four programs in the country. Meanwhile, the AC women kick off their season in less than two weeks with yet another trip to California. Two games versus the University of Pacific start the campaign, followed by an entire schedule of very winnable games. We're back after an extraordinary week, one in which multiple water polo events were cancelled, including our show, which succumbed to multiple and unpredictable power outages. Austin College's first weekend slate of games against Air Force didn't end the way they'd prefer. They now fly to Colorado Springs to face Cal Baptist and the Falcons again this weekend. Meanwhile, Texans ripped it up across the country from Fresno, to Thousand Oaks, to the East Coast, as the NCAA season begins in its own strange, atrophied way.
