Due to the length of the material, this episode has been divided into three parts. This is part two. In this part, Dr. Ettensohn explores the emotional consequences of the developmental shift from borderline to neurotic-level personality organization. While borderline-level defenses aim to ward off annihilation through splitting, projection, and omnipotence, neurotic-level functioning introduces new emotional burdens: grief, guilt, and the realization that some losses cannot be undone. Drawing on psychoanalytic theories of the paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions, this episode examines how individuals begin to internalize the reality of separate minds, enduring subjects, and the permanence of emotional injury. These capacities open the door to deeper love, mutuality, and ethical concern—but also to sorrow, remorse, and longing. Dr. Ettensohn also outlines the core developmental conditions that support this shift, including “good enough” relational experiences that enable ambivalence to be tolerated and meaning to be preserved across time. Finally, the episode offers concrete strategies for strengthening neurotic-level integration and functioning, both in therapy and in everyday life. References: Bollas, C. (1987). On this episode of the Brainy Moms podcast, therapist Katie May joins Dr. Amy and Sandy to discuss concepts from her book, “You're On Fire, It's Fine: Effective Strategies for Parenting Teens with Self-Destructive Behaviors.” They talk about how to have conversations with your “fire feeler” in a way that doesn't come across as judgmental or cause them to lose trust in your relationship. You'll hear advice on what and when it might be appropriate to share your own experiences from young adulthood, as well as why punishments like taking away their phone or grounding them may do more harm than good. Hear specific language you can use when talking to your teen about your concerns and why being a “good enough” parent is better than striving for perfection. Don't miss this important but upbeat conversation about connecting with your teen and helping them through some of the toughest times in their young adult life. ABOUT KATIE MAY:Katie May, LPC, owner and executive director of Creative Healing, is a national speaker and trainer specializing in therapy for teens with depression, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts. What are the pleasures and pitfalls of running a successful fishing lodge?  What's it really like behind the scenes?  And how did a couple kids from New Hampshire end up running one of the most successful fishing and hunting lodges in Montana?  (Hint—it wasn't due to trust funds or investment banker money).  This week I interview Tim and Joanne Linehan [39:39], two of the nicest people on the planet and legends in the fly-fishing industry.  Their story is a heartwarming success story of a lifelong partnership in love and life. And in the Fly Box this week we have some great questions and helpful tips, including: Do you have any tips for fishing really muddy water or is it just not worth it? Does a fish's sense of smell work better in warm water or cold water? A great story about a listener breaking off a big rainbow and then coming back later in the day, catching the fish, and getting his fly back. Any tips on a fly rod for a 6-year-old kid? I have been nymph fishing with a fluorocarbon leader.  Should I switch to a nylon leader when dry-fly fishing? Do you have any tips for setting the hook when fishing dry flies? Should I use side pressure when playing Atlantic salmon? Can I use Water Shed on my floating fly line? Any tips on catching smallmouth buffalo on a fly? My line and leader won't go straight at the end of the cast and end up curling in on the cast.  Any tips as to why this is happening? I'm taking my first saltwater fly-fishing trip.  Will the Battenkill Disc reel give me enough retrieve speed?

In May, Google launched AI Overviews – software which uses artificial intelligence to answer people's questions quickly, skipping the step of scrolling through links. The new search system has made headlines for generating hilariously incorrect answers, a glitch Google says it is taking swift action to remedy. But this bumpy start will quickly be ironed out, says Irish Times writer Hugh Linehan who wrote this week about the “Googlepocalypse” sweeping the United States. The introduction of this pilot version of Google's AI Overviews tool has already “significantly harmed” small businesses and content creators who have seen a collapse in web site traffic, and has been described as an extinction-level event for news media. These “devastating effects” are heading quickly our way, says Linehan. So, what is the Googlepocalypse and how will it change how the average person searches the internet? And will a reliance on AI to answer our questions only further enhance the misinformation plaguing the online world?Presented by Sorcha Pollak. Produced by Aideen Finnegan. GUEST OVERVIEW: Graham Linehan is a comedy writer who began advocating for women's rights three years ago, facing significant challenges as a result. Triggered by Donald Trump's election, he criticised activists for pushing extreme gender ideology, particularly its impact on children. In the UK, organisations like Stonewall supported these views, which Linehan opposed on Twitter. Despite harassment and legal issues, he continued to expose the misogyny he saw, facing persistent backlash and highlighting the difficulty of challenging dominant gender narratives.

Graham Lanahan, born in Dublin, is the mastermind behind the beloved sitcoms Father Ted, The IT Crowd, Black Boots, and Motherland.
