Midlife women are all too familiar with this story on today's episode. You wake up one day at 45 (or, insert your age here) and you realize you have no idea who you are, what you value, or how to put yourself first. Purpose? What's that. You're just trying to get from day to day. Floating on the lazy river of life, cruising on autopilot. Whether you want to call it survival mode or denial mode, you wake up one day, curled up in a ball of your own tears after life has knocked you down and you say, "Who am I? and "I guess this is it." This is the story that my guest, Tandy Reagan, shares on today's episode. She shares how she went from heartbreak, loss, despair and rampant negative thinking to being grounded in who she is, what she wants and believing she is on her path to creating a 'second act' with purpose. Tandy is a nurse, single mother, graduate student and woman in the middle of life who wants more. Her journey began to unfold when Tandy decided that putting herself first was the key to finding her voice, owning her value and using her strengths to overcome her fears. It's a conversation that's all too relatable with a very good ending! I'd love to connect with you! In this episode, you’re going to hear a conversation I had with some of my clients who are working with me in my program, The Midlife Without Regrets Method. You’ll hear from three women in the middle, with different stories and backgrounds, yet all with the same goal: to change their stuck story, to overcome their fear of change, so that they can live the life they want, instead of settling. They are doing the work on themselves so that they have no regrets when they look back at this pivotal time in their life’s journey. No regrets doesn’t mean everything goes as planned. No regrets means that you took a starring role in your life and did not settle for status quo out of a lack mindset or out of fear. No regrets means you went for it and learned how to overcome your fear. Because if I know one thing, I know that regret lasts longer than fear. I also know that when you put your energy into moving yourself forward, even if you don’t end up where you intended, you end up on a path that was meant for you and often times, better than what you could have ever dreamed. I'm fired up in this episode about the damaging and harmful messaging to women about aging. Can we please stop buying into the myth that youth is good and getting older is bad? Please? I'm so annoyed that the anti-aging "fixes" pushed on women so that they can take "years off" is a thing. Please. Can we just stop? By it's definition 'anti' means against. So, am I supposed to be against living? Against growing older or living a long time? I don't know about you, but I'm not against living a long time. Nope. I'm just getting started. I'm just becoming me with each wrinkle, extra pound, and aching body part. So, f*$k anti-aging. I'm pro-aging. I built my entire business and brand for the sole purpose of encouraging women to embrace all the possibilities for life by living their midlife years and beyond as BOLD as they want. My mission is to change the narrative around aging. Aging is not something to be hidden, avoided at all costs, and masked. Age is something to celebrate. Aging is a privilege. So yeah, you bet I'm pro-aging. Connection and Community: I'd love to connect with you! In today’s episode, I interview a client of mine, Ms. Celine Matthiessen. Celine enrolled in my signature program, The Midlife Without Regrets Method, just four months ago and has kicked fear to the curb by committing to the process and doing the work so she can live a BOLD midlife. In just four months, Celine has gained clarity, confidence, leaned into using her strengths, created an exciting vision and is taking a lot of decisive action to live the life she wants instead of the autopilot life she was living. Life hasn’t been easy for Celine. In fact, she suffered one of the biggest tragedies a young woman could face early on when she lost her husband at age 37 and her daughter, Anika, was just 5 years old. Understandably, the loss of her husband when she was just 37 left her on autopilot for over a decade trying to keep it all together. Once Anika was off to college, Celine knew she had to change but she lacked the energy, tools, and support to figure out how to make the changes she wanted on her own. Through The Midlife Without Regrets Method program and 1:1 coaching with me, Celine started her journey to get unstuck in October with a goal to sell her empty nest and move to the beach, to start living BOLDly. Celine currently lives in The Colony, TX a suburb of Dallas and is a Vice President of Insights and Analysis at a local firm where she assists clients in entering new industries and markets, launching new services, and understanding market forces and future. Celine welcomes you to connect with her on LinkedIn so please don’t hesitate to send her a request to connect with her https://www.linkedin.com/in/redleafinfo/. Now, at the beginning of my next chapter, I am unapologetically granting myself permission to be, do, and have what I want in this phase of my life. Starting over (yet again) is a common experience in midlife. If you're a woman in the middle, you have probably had to start over more than once. In today's episode, I share my thoughts on starting over and it's this:  starting over never happens from the same place. The last five years of my life have been nothing but starting over, again and again. But, I really never start over from the same place because I have more knowledge, more skills, more experience, more courage, and more bravery. So, all of that gives me a huge advantage for the next change I encounter. So, while it does suck to have to start over again and again whether by choice of forced circumstance, the alternative is not having the opportunity to start over again and instead being stuck. Now, that would really suck! So, the midlife mindset switch I made is that getting to start over is a privilege not a burden. Connection and Community: I'd love to connect with you! Regrets don't feel good. The "coulda, woulda, shoulda" that many women in the middle talk about when they look back on their life adds up to one big pile of regret. The good news? There's still time to regret-proof your life! I work with women, mostly over 50, some younger and some older. Midlife is a time in your life when you often start to reevaluate your life - your choices, your career, where you live, your relationships - and think about what's next by asking the question, “Is this it?” If the answer is NO and especially if it’s a HELL NO, it’s time to take a serious look at your life and figure out what it will take to make the changes and reinvent the parts of your life that are no longer serving you. So, in today's episode I share the ten things I needed to have in place as I embarked on the transformational journey of regret-proofing my life. HIWC, which was established in 2013, is a functional medicine practice and wellness center offering acupuncture, massage, yoga, functional medicine, IV nutrient therapy, herbs/supplements, and many other holistic healthcare modalities. In addition to all that, Cynthia is also a Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac) in the state of Illinois, an herbalist and has a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine. Who says you can't reinvent yourself in midlife? I call bullshit! Today's episode is a recording of a presentation I did this past summer as a guest speaker on a virtual summit called the Train of Positivity. The biggest complaint I hear time and time again from women in the middle is that they are stuck. They want to make change but don't know where to start and what to do in order to get unstuck. So, in this talk, I share my 'ABC' formula for getting unstuck! After over 40 years of saying 'NO' to myself and living life on autopilot because I was afraid to make a change, I finally faced my fears and said, 'YES.' My mission is to help other midlife women get unstuck and stop being afraid to redefine what midlife looks and feels like so that they live the life they want, not the one they're settling for. I'm here for the growth. All of it. The painful and the joyful parts of growth. The setbacks and the successes. The good and the bad. All of it. So much of what kept me stuck for years was that I didn't approach my goals from a perspective of "What is this here to teach me?" I attached solely to the outcome. When the outcome didn't materialize the way I planned, I labeled myself a failure and I got further and further into my stuck story. Showing up for your life with a mindset of "I'm here for the growth," changes your behaviors from ones that are outcome driven to behaviors that lead to curiosity about your reactions, actions, and inactions. If you get into the habit of asking yourself, "What is this lesson here to teach me?" and you are open to a mindset of growth instead of attaching to a result, your stuck story will slowly begin to disappear because you will have developed a habit of taking imperfect action. In this episode, I'm reviewing life since starting this podcast one year ago, the process of how Midlife in Bold came to be, a new business project I'm working on, the mindset shifts that I have made to overcome my limiting beliefs and own my worth and value, and what I have identified as my biggest barrier to success and living my purpose, resistance. Resistance comes disguised in many forms and can manifest in a number of unhealthy ways. Once you identify how resistance shows up in your life, you can begin to make the shifts to move past your resistance to live life with clarity and purpose. If you've ever started a project or work on a goal and then stopped or avoided making a change and then regretted it, it might be resistance. The good news is, once you realize how resistance is showing up in your life, you can overcome it. Susie is 54, a Wisconsin resident, married, mother to four children, as well as some other four legged children, and started living life with no regrets about 8 years ago when she founded her business and started to share her gifts and purpose to help others find relief, physical or emotional, as a folk herbalist and aromatherapist. Susie has been diagnosed with complex PTSD, has survived an abusive marriage, and other losses but because of all of that, she has turned her pain into her biggest success. Susie has turned her mess into her message which is this: follow your dreams because the pain of living with regret is too big of a burden to bear. Right in the middle of life, Susie is making her dreams come true. Many of my clients cringe when I ask them to set goals. Goal is a four letter word to them. Why? Because the way they've been taught to set personal goals often sets them up for failure. Many of us have been trained and conditioned to focus on the outcome of a goal and to self-assign success or failure on how well we meet the metrics of the goal. Personally, I was never taught how to set a goal based on how I wanted to feel.  So, when I didn't reach a goal based the metrics I created, I assigned blame, deemed myself a failure, and decided I was no good at that "thing" and I would abandon the goal. That's why I think personal goals that are focused on metrics and outcomes suck.  As I've entered midlife, I've started to set goals based on feelings, more heart-centered goals, and those don't suck and work way better for me as I share with you in today's episode. Wine and pasta? Yes please! In this episode, I discuss the various dimensions of wellness and what it means to be healthy and it might not be exactly what you read about in magazines or see on social media posts. You might be surprised to know that wellness is not just about what you eat and whether or not you can squat and do push ups.  Wellness is complex and it includes much more than what's on your plate.   So, if you're a lover of wine and pasta and think you can't have these things to be healthy, think again.  To connect with me, you can email me at thislifepodcast@icloud.com, find me on Instagram and Facebook at Erini Yoga & Wellness, or visit my website at www.eriniyogawellness.com. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

    EP 7: The Comparison Trap

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 13, 2019 33:53

Comparison is the thief of joy. We are taught how to "compare and contrast" early on in our schooling from the time we can read sentences. So, we're used to making comparisons because it is a natural thing to do. When you constantly compare yourself and your life to others, that act of comparison robs you of two things: your joy and the present moment. If you find yourself getting caught in the comparison trap, this episode is for you. I talk about how comparing results in stealing your joy, your present, and minimizes the amazing person that you are. Not only that, but if you are stuck in the comparison trap, you are probably downplaying your accomplishments and shrinking from compliments that are well deserved and earned.
