Nelson and Alexandra share an animated and nostalgic conversation with the charmingly French Fannie Brett. All three of them are 'ex-pat' Angelenos so they reminisce about Los Angeles life and work in the 90s and their dinners at El Coyote - and you though they only drank margaritas in Rosarito Beach, Mexico! Fannie is still acting but she is also a renown voice actor/teacher, casting director and producer. She has a successful dubbing studio which she runs from Las Vegas. In 1996, however, she'd not long been in America when she was cast in Titanic as Benjamin Guggenheim's mistress Madame Aubert. She describes in detail her audition process with Mali Fin on what was her first American film. If you are just starting out, you will learn a lot about the business of acting and see that the world of Titanic really was populated by people from all over the world. Titanic was a floating city of the rich and the poor and a myriad of nations were represented. In this episode, Nelson and Alexandra learn a bit about the business of Titanic from Joe Gold of The Gold Group, the promotional company behind the Titanic Artefact Exhibition in Boston.Joe talks about some of the fascinating artefacts they have on display including a toilet from third class and a perfectly preserved wool suit retrieved from a leather suitcase in the debris field. They discuss the importance of preservation and education. The Boston exhibition is one of more than forty around world. Jen has a fascination with perfume and specifically the history of perfume and is the perfumer behind Immortal Perfumes, a micro-perfumery specializing in historically inspired scents. Her creations have been featured in New York Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, and Seattle Met among others.Jen researches and writes about historical figures and their fragrances for her popular TikTok channel. She also writes fiction and has been published in several anthologies.Nelson and Alexandra had a wonderful and insightful conversation with Jen about the Perfumer Adolf Saalfeld, a German-born Jew, who boarded the Titanic with plans to sell his fragrances in New York City. In his rush to leave the ship as it sank, he left samples of his scents behind. Lloyd's obsession with Titanic began with a library book, Robert Ballard's The Discovery of the Titanic. He borrowed it so many times, the librarian asked him to stop checking it out so that other children might enjoy reading it. Seeing James Cameron's Titanic at the age of ten sealed the deal. Lloyd has lived in the UK and been host of the early morning TV show in New Zealand he now reports for stuff. It can probably be said that no-one knows the story of Titanic like Don Lynch. He famously co-authored Titanic: An Illustrated History with renown Titanic artist Ken Marschall and as a result of that publication was asked to contribute to the making of James Cameron's Titanic. He even plays a small but memorable part (Frederic Spedden) in the film.He's been down to the wreck twice with James Cameron and wrote the companion book to Ghosts of the Abyss. David Condon started collecting and selling pieces of the set from James Cameron's Titanic before the film had come out in cinemas. A lucky coincidence had him stumble upon a story about a stash of timber, decking and plasterwork that had been discarded erroneously in a Mexican field not far from the studio where Titanic was filmed. The locals had been invited to come and take what they needed. Many of the items were well made and too good to dump so they were repurposed in homes and business buildings. It was free building material.There followed David's twenty five plus year Mexican scavenger hunt for Titanic memorabilia in the form of doors, railings, portholes and wooden paneling. Parts of a movie set that are usually taken to the dump to be trashed.Nelson and Alexandra barely had enough time in this episode to hear all his wonderful stories of discovery. Peter White auditioned for a number of roles in Titanic and eventually landed the role of the wireless operator of the Californian who tragically turned off his radio and went to bed while the Titanic sank. Peter did extensive research into his character, Charles Victor Groves, or 3rd Officer Groves, of the Californian. He spent more than four months in Rosarito Beach, Mexico, getting to know his fellow cast mates while waiting to be called the set to film his scenes. He regales Nelson and Alexandra with tales from the nightly Happy Hours in the Real Del Mar bar to filming on the set of the Californian wireless room, only to find at an early screening that he had been completely cut from the film. Kris Andersson worked with choreographer Lynne Hockney on a film before she was looking for dancers to help her on James Cameron's Titanic. Kris was hired for the dance team and learnt traditional folk dances for Lynne to show James Cameron. Titanic knows no age. It's well known that seeing James Cameron's film for the first time can have a strong impression on a young person and bring about a fascination that invites them to find out more about the history of the ship and her passengers aboard the ship of dreams.Nelson and Alexandra found two such young people - 24 year old Brandi Burleson saw the film when she was six and as well as becoming enamoured with Kate and Leo and the true story of the tragedy, seeing the film also inspired her to embark on a film career - production design is her particular interest after appreciating the sets ad the attention to detail in James Cameron's film.Fifteen year old Neil Kolhatkar came to the story with a book called 882 & a Half Amazing Answers To Your Questions About The Titanic. In this episode, Nelson and Alexandra's special guest is the author Simon Medhurst. He is also the great grandson of Quartermaster Robert Hitchens who famously was at the helm when Titanic hit the iceberg. He's portrayed by Paul Brightwell in James Cameron's film. Judy Prestininzi and Ellen H Mower O'Brien met on the set of Titanic when they became part of the core background players in James Cameron's Titanic in 1996. Thus began a twenty-five year friendship.
