Jonathan Yaskoff is a talented film director, producer, and actor who recently starred in the film Bear Week Diaries (all about the iconic Provincetown Bear Week)! He was recently in the film Smothered By Mothers which stars actress Heather Matarazzo. And if you're a Real Housewives of Miami fan, you may remember him as the producer of Adriana De Moura's music video Fyah (when the women were all having a meltdown haha). We discuss some of the key storylines in Queer as Folk, like sleeping with your boss (definitely a no no), conversion therapy, and the wild parties at Babylon. Then, Jonathan reveals the behind the scenes of filming Reality TV and what it's like being on the Real Housewives. And, because Jonathan has been both behind and on the camera, he discusses his thoughts on sex scenes, nudity, and consent culture. Get ready for quite a dynamic conversation! Young who recently published "Coming Out Republican: A History of the Gay Right." Episode 12 of QAF, "Move It Or Lose It" explores Michael and David's moving dilemmas, the harmful effects of conversion therapy, and gay politics! Neil is a historian who specializes in LGBTQ politics, specifically the history of gay men and the republican party. Neil cannot believe that Michael and David think it's a good idea to move in together when it seems like they don't even know each other's interests and lifestyle. When it comes to Emmett's conversion therapy storyline, Neil has so many thoughts about how unrealistic and poorly done these scenes are. When it comes to politics in this show, Andrew remarks that rarely do any of the characters speak openly about political parties or current political issues of the time. While the characters don't talk extensively about politics, most seem to hold similar liberal views. But, Neil explains that while a majority of the LGBTQ community are liberal, there has always been a segment of gay republicans. While Florida recovers from back-to-back Hurricanes, Denise and JD put together a great compilation of part of our chats with Celeste Pechous, from "Work In Progress", Michelle Bonilla who's started on "ER" playing one of the first recurring lesbians on network TV and most recently in "911 Lone Star", and the new show "High Potential" -then of course, Michelle Clunie from the long running, ground-breaking "Queer As Folk". These ladies all have been proud to represent new, different, accurate LGBTQIA parts and we loved chatting with them. To watch it on our YouTube Channel, click this link.
For this episode, we're diving into a comparison of Queer as Folk – both the original UK version and the US adaptation. We'll explore the differences in tone, storytelling, and character development, reflecting the cultural contexts of late '90s Britain and early 2000s America. We'll discuss the principal cast, from Aidan Gillen's bold Stuart in the UK to Gale Harold's complex Brian in the US, alongside other key characters like Nathan, Vince, and Michael. We'll also look at the creative vision of Russell T Davies for the UK series, versus Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipman's expanded approach for the US version, touching on the impact each had on LGBTQ+ representation and television as a whole. This one's for fans of both versions, so join us for a deep dive into the iconic series that helped change the landscape of queer media!

As the author of "The Paradox of P*rn: Notes on Gay Male S*xual Culture" and most recently "Daddy Lover God: A Sacred Intimate Journey," Don is an expert on gay male culture and psycho-s*xual-spiritual journeys. While he was a fan of the British version of QAF, Don offers a critical perspective of the American version. He explains that in his opinion, it promotes harmful stereotypes and lacks authenticity in its depiction of gay life. With Andrew, Don explores the show's treatment of aging and intergenerational relationships within the gay community. As an expert on pleasure, adult s*x education, and spiritual practice, Don provides a refreshing perspective on QAF's treatment of relationships, intimacy, and communication. Matt is rehearsing for the school show. Meanwhile, on television, Russell T Davies breaks new ground with Channel 4 drama Queer as Folk. Caroline Aherne and Craig Cash resurrect Mrs Merton for her own sitcom. Then, ITV adapt hit US comedy, That 70's Show, which was adapted by two then unknown writers named Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong for Days like These. Finally, Matt tests Luke on what was big in the UK charts in February.
Welcome back to Fright School! This week we get into it about our shifting Queer culture. We compare and contrast Queer As Folk, Looking, and Love, Simon. We're continuing our Black Horror History dive with ABBY (1974)! Hitting theatres almost a year to the day of THE EXORCIST's release, Abby was quickly mired in legal troubles from Warner Bros. When an episode of QAF begins with a vigorous J*RK OFF and CYBER S*X fantasy sequence, you know this is going to be quite a conversation! TQ opens up about his complicated relationship with his father and how much he related to Brian's complex dynamic with his father. TQ and Andrew explore whether or not queer men have more complex father-son relationships than straight men. Do straight fathers have patriarchal expectations that complicate their relationship with their queer son? TQ says that these relationships often cause trauma that is explored in their new book "Godspeed Lovers." Then, TQ and Andrew delve into Emmett's cyber fantasies and whether the fantasy is sometimes more fulfilling than the real-life experience? Also, why isn't "Queer as Folk" a new Broadway play or musical? TQ and Andrew are ready to write it! Hey Diners! We are popping in to say hi and to give you a quick little update. We are still settling into the new year, but Queer As Folk is never too far from our minds.
I have been fortunate to interview Del Shores (Sordid Lives Creator) multiple times throughout the years. After working in the entertainment industry for more than three decades as a Director, Producer, and Writer, Del is finally making his NYC theatrical directorial debut with Jiggs Burgess' play Wounded.I am so excited to catch up with Del because I always have great conversations with him. In this NEW interview, Del is Baring It All with Call Me Adam about:Making his NYC theatrical directorial debutOne thing he hasn't done because something or someone got in the wayOne path his life took that he would like to put on full displayWorking with Whoopi Goldberg & Caroline RheaAn update on the Sordid Lives FranchiseSo much moreWounded, by Jiggs Burgess, is about a repressed nobody who thinks of himself as somebody. An addict. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? played out between hummingbirds. And a pussy eating dog. This is Wounded. Carrol could've been somebody, after all his book, The Crimson Valise, was made into a movie. Yet somehow Carrol's unhealed past, and an aging mother, got in the way. On the other hand, Carrol's classmate, Robert, was smart and driven. Went to one of the best private universities in the country on scholarship. But his damage led him down the path of addiction and eventually prison. In this darkest of comedies, the bleak paths our lives can lead us down are on full display. ***Warning: Recommended for adult audiences. Ronnie Jr. from the Randomly Ronnie Jr. show joined me to recap "Queer as Folk" episode eight, but we got into a riveting discussion after Ronnie asked me whether I would support an LGBTQ celebrity even if they put their foot in their mouth (Todrick Hall anyone)? This sparked such a nuanced discussion concerning cancel culture and Reality TV controversies. Why were people surprised about Ramona Singer stepping in it when Eboni K. Williams kept telling us that the call was coming from inside the RHONY house! Is there a possibility that Eboni, Bethenny Frankel, and Leah McSweeney could repair their relationship and unite together...only time will tell. Because Ronnie is a Reality TV expert, he discusses the similarities and differences between how queer men are portrayed in scripted shows (like QAF, Looking, and Pose) and unscripted shows. When asked what makes a good LGBTQ+ ally, Ronnie explains that supporting the community means showing grace to those still learning. One powerful moment is when Ronnie defines coming out as a lifelong journey of self-acceptance. Scott and Andrew discuss Brian's attractiveness in the QAF world and compare him to Oscar Wilde's “Dorian Gray” because just like Lord Henry, the QAF characters dictate that Brian is the most attractive and seductive gay man in their group. It's Pride month and what better to kick it off than talking one of me and Mikey's favorite shows from our high school days, Queer as Folk! While this is the US version that premiered on Showtime, we had never seen anything like this and that's possibly why it has stayed with us over 20 years later. This is based on the UK series which was much shorter, however this version has some incredible characters that you just can't help but fall in love with. For a trip down memory lane we are discussing only the pilot episode and keep it spoiler free for those who haven't seen it before. We talk our introduction to the show, my stories of traveling to Best Buy to get the box set every season, the incredible soundtracks that are missing from the streaming versions, those steamy sex scenes, and get into what hasn't aged well over the years.--- Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Content warning: This interview contains some explicit language and graphic, frank talk about sex that some listeners might be sensitive to. Ryan O'Connell is the creator and star of the Netflix show Special. It's a semi-autobiographical sitcom about Ryan's own life – his experience as a gay man, and coming to terms with his identity as a disabled person. Ryan has cerebral palsy. It's a congenital disorder that can affect someone's movement, muscle tone, or posture. For Ryan, that means CP mainly manifests as a limp. The show's depiction of disability is groundbreaking. It shows the intersection of disability and sexuality in a way that is rarely ever seen on screen. These days, Ryan is currently starring in the new reboot of Queer As Folk. On the latest episode, we'll revisit public radio veteran Ray Suarez in conversation with Ryan from last year.
Now wait a minute. Of course you know our guests in The Carriage House are the cream of the crop, but our guest this week might be in the midst of having his best week ever, pardon me. We're so excited to welcome none other than actor, writer, and activist Ryan O'Connell! You know Ryan from his delightful Emmy-nominated Netflix show SPECIAL, but he's got TWO new projects coming out this week, excuse me. His new book, JUST BY LOOKING AT HIM is being released TODAY, and his new TV series, a reboot of QUEER AS FOLK, premieres June 9th on Peacock. Ryan joins us to help give advice about a clingy friend, battling addiction, and always being the one to initiate meeting friends. The time has passed to join AR Social Club for the month of June, but, luckily for you, there's PLENTY of time to join for July! Just visit arsocialclub.com (or, yes, arsocial.club works too) and subscribe before July 1st for entry.
Uh... Stunning Talent On The Pod Alert! Ryan O'Connell joins the women of Las Cultch ahead of the release of both his debut novel Just By Looking At Him (out June 7th) and Peacock's Queer As Folk, on which he writes and also stars (out June 9th)! The three discuss their origins as snarky internet gays, splurging on ridiculous rideshares, working with Kim Cattrall (who plays Ryan's mom on QAF.... gag), horny photo shoots, how Kim Petras commands gays with her voice, relationships to the original Queer As Folk, and living on the same street where they filmed Erin Brockovich (the part where she's poor and amongst cockroaches). Also, thoughts on this season's RHOBH, how being a reality star alters the psyche, Gregg Araki, the goddess Parker Posey, and formative indie films of the 90's. Would YOU give your dog a human's name? What would it be? Think about that while you press PLAY on this episode... of LAS CULTURISTAS. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
