In this episode, Danny, is joined by Jim Tavare, comedian, musician, actor and director, famous for his stand-up featuring his double bass, which has made him the recipient of some of the most legendary heckles in the history of the British comedy circuit. He was one of Prince Charles's favourite comedians and is well known for co-creating and starring in the BAFTA award-winning The Sketch Show. A certain demographic, however, remember him best as Tom, the Leaky Cauldron´s hunchback barman in Harry Potter. His IMDb profile describes him as looking like "a mad scientist escaped experiment." Jim has some great stories to share, including how he found comedic inspiration during an accident that literally nearly killed him, which is fascinating. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS During an accident that nearly killed him, Jim had an out-of-body experience during which comedic inspiration struck. Jim used comedy to help him heal emotionally and mentally. He adapted physical aspects of his act so that his long-term injuries did not stop him from performing. He started his career working in a theatre via a YTS scheme, then the Enterprise allowance. Adding his double bass to his act got laughs for jokes that had previously fallen flat. Most of the time, Jim used his double bass as a prop instead of playing it. Americans respond to a different type of humour and still love the British accent. Prince Charles booked Jim to perform in front of 14 crowned heads of Europe and the UK royal family. Their unique lifestyle meant Jim had to cut some jokes because they couldn´t relate to the experiences. Comedy goes in cycles, and at times the circuit becomes saturated. BEST MOMENTS “I'd always regarded myself as relatively handsome by European standards, until I got cast as the hunchback in Harry Potter.” “People are now growing avocado trees in London.” “I just couldn’t believe the characters I was meeting and making a living while I was doing it .” “The accent helps.” “Whilst I have Jewish heritage, I can´t really say I'm Jewish.” “I owe my career to that Tony Blair government kind of atmosphere.” “ I have scar tissue on the lungs, so breathing is sometimes an issue. “ ABOUT JIM TAVARÉ http://www.jimtavare.org https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0851663 HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Having worked with some of the most difficult people in the UK, he is a natural storyteller and entertainer, whilst purveying the most fascinating information that you didn't know you didn't know. A writer and host of pub quizzes across London, he has travelled extensively and speaks several languages. He has been a consultant for exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum and Natural History Museum in London as well as presenting accelerated learning seminars across the UK. With a wide range of knowledge ranging from motor mechanics to opera to breeding carnivorous plants, he believes learning is the most effective when it's fun. Uniquely delivered, this is history without the boring bits, told the way only Danny Hurst can. James Ridgley joined Justin and Paul to discuss filmmaking. He also shared his information on performing standup as well as on cruise ships, sketches, and going from juggling to microbudget films. His IMDb - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0725927 About James James Ridgley grew up as a latch-key kid in West Los Angeles attending IPS, a program within University High School; an highly experimental learning environment which involved Landmark training and other "therapy" type instruction. Also where he attended a Metaphysics class which lead to an actual one time telepathic communication from his teacher from across the city. This would later affect his current screenwriting efforts in the Spiritual Drama/Dramedy genre (Perhaps a just made up genre.) That same year in High School he started his career performing a Comedy-Juggling act around the world, working as an Opening Act for Ray Charles; Marilyn McCoo; worked with Penn and Teller, Pee Wee Herman, the late great Bill Hicks, Bob Saget and others. He performed Stand-Up in the 80's and 90's and dabbled in screenwriting. While the screenplay "DC DOG" got him noticed, along with a 2nd Place standing in Kodak's Short Script Film Awards for his original script "Where Life Begins" it didn't lead to production so he went to film school to learn the art himself. From this naive position he ended up with jobs in editorial and then mostly as a Production Sound Mixer, working with his favorite directors: Mark Pellington, Mike Mills, and Victor Salva. In between he writes and directs his own projects and has a slew of Screenplays ready to market.

If you ever wanted to know what an assistant director does on set you are going to LOVE this episode. On today's episode we have a long time friend Vince Gonzales. Vince has been working in the film industry for over top decades. His IMDB page is pretty crazy. He's worked on 90 classics like The Sandlot, Speed and What Dreams May Come. Now after 2000 his credits start to heat up: Pearl Harbor, Six Feet Under, Charmed, Boston Legal, Grey's Anatomy, Transformers: Age of Extinction and of course The Walking Dead. I wanted to bring Vince on the show to discuss his time on The Walking Dead but also what it takes to be an assistant director on both small and "monstrous" sets. Don't listen to this episode in the dark.

PRETTY AS A PICARESQUE: Join me and filmmaker Steve Herold (Death of an Umbrella Salesman, Walmea) while we talk two films inspired by Voltaire's Candide, The Jerk and O Lucky Man! “I was born a poor black child”: It's a tale as old as the Spanish Golden Age and made perhaps most famous in the west by Voltaire's Candide. Take a somewhat naïve innocent, usually of lower social class, thrust him out in the world, and have him navigate the slings and arrows he encounters, trying to survive in an essentially corrupt society. Or as I call it, Episode 80 of Pop Art, where I and my guest find the pop culture in art and the art in pop culture. It's the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. For this episode, I am happy to welcome as my guest, filmmaker Steve Herold, who has chosen as his film the Steve Martin vehicle, Carl Reiner's The Jerk, while I have chosen Lindsay Anderson's cult favorite, O Lucky Man!, both picaresque films with a naïve innocent having to go out on his own to discover the world. And in this episode we answer such questions as: Quentin Tarantino's The Jerk? Reactive, active or passive? What is white male protestant comedy? What are the problematic aspects of both films? How does Stanley Kubrick fit in? How many slaps did McDowell endure in the final scene? What is Steve Martin's favorite line? What is the French title of O Lucky Man!? Where was Hartounian's gas station located? How does Star Wars fit in and what does it have to do with Pig Man? Where does Rob Reiner appear in the film? And don't forget to check out Steve Herold and his films. His IMDB page is at https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0003750/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0#director Hs film Death of an Umbrella Salesman can be found on Amazon Prime and his newest film Walmea is making the festival rounds. In this deeply moving episode, Philip recalls memorable moments from his lengthy career, reflects on the friendships that have at once anchored and buoyed him along the way (including with the late, great actor Bill Paxton), and pulls back the curtain on working with his screen-partner-turned-brother Richard Harmon in Woodland. While living in London and covering the NFL and NASCAR for Sky Sports, Tuchman worked with PokerStars for online and live events. In 2011, he began working with the World Series of Poker, and has continued to call the action every summer since.  Before finding poker and his career in sports broadcasting, Tuchman was in Los Angeles to pursue his passion for acting. He ultimately ended up with a few close calls, including a network TV series that wasn't picked up, and a movie he was cut out of. His IMDB page has half a dozen credits, including appearances on shows such as Beverly Hills 90210, Party Of Five, and Buffy The Vampire Slayer.  Highlights from this interview include childhood nicknames, scoring five goals for grandma, pros and cons of college, wearing many hats, being extra for Pamela Anderson, close calls in Hollywood, why he had to miss his best friend's wedding, getting cut out of a George Clooney movie, shoving Jason Priestley, double pay on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, lonely lunches with Jennifer Love Hewitt, how poker keeps calling, working for Sky Sports in London, calling the WSOP, the player who was banned from the broadcast booth, betting on elections, Springsteen tattoos, Slapshot > Goon, from Corey Haim to Jim Carrey, and casting Shawshank: The Musical.

Tosh & Kimley discuss "Ennio Morricone: In His Own Words" (Ennio Morricone in conversation with Alessandro De Rosa.) The great Italian composer whose music everyone knows even if they don’t know his name has scored literally hundreds of films, first gaining fame for his scores for the spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone ("A Fistful of Dollars," "For a Few Dollars More," "The Good, the Bad & the Ugly") and then working with a who’s who of Italian directors (Pier Paolo Pasolini, Bernardo Bertolucci, Giuseppe Tornatore to name a few) and eventually getting noticed by Hollywood and beyond. Terrence Malick, Brian de Palma, Pedro Almodóvar, and Quentin Tarantino have all been lucky enough to have an Ennio Morricone score for their films. His IMDB page currently lists 519 composer credits! And that does not include his incredible output of “Absolute Music” and his work with the Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza where things get really interesting. Special Edition: Thought I’d bring this episode back since the new season of The Walking Dead premiered yesterday and it was a brutal one.  The Walking Dead – Working on the Dead SetIf you are a Walking Dead fan you are going to LOVE this episode. If you ever wanted to know what an assistant director does on set you are going to LOVE this episode. On today’s episode, we have a long time friend Vince Gonzales. Vince has been working in the film industry for over top decades. His IMDB page is pretty crazy. He’s worked on 90 classics like The Sandlot, Speed, and What Dreams May Come. Now after 2000 his credits start to heat up: Pearl Harbor, Six Feet Under, Charmed, Boston Legal, Grey’s Anatomy, Transformers: Age of Extinction and of course The Walking Dead.I wanted to bring Vince on the show to discuss his time on The Walking Dead but also what it takes to be an assistant director on both small and “monstrous” sets. Don’t listen to this episode in the dark.
