Hey horror fans! This week we're joined by Isaiah Saxon, director of A24's The Legend of Ochi and co-founder of the visionary film and animation studio Encyclopedia Pictura. We talk about Isaiah's early creative roots, from drawing and stop-motion to building the kid-focused platform DIY.org, and how all of that shaped his unique approach to storytelling. Then we dive deep into the stunning handmade world of Carpathia—filled with puppets, animatronics, painted maps, 1930s lenses, and big heart.Isaiah shares what it was like working with Willem Dafoe and Helena Zengel, how he blends mythology and music, and why he believes films should feel like moving paintings instead of hyper-reality.We left this conversation genuinely inspired; Isaiah is someone bringing magic back to movies in a way we haven't seen in a long time.If you're into bold storytelling, weird creatures, and fantasy flicks from the '80s and '90s, this one's for you so...COME HANG OUT!!!Follow Us on Social Media:Instagram & Threads: @mostlyhorrorpodTikTok & Twitter/X: @mostlyhorrorSteve: @stevenisaverage on all socialsSean: @hypocrite.ink on IG/TikTok, @hypocriteink on Twitter/XEnjoy this episode? Travel back to a time before the world of New Century was formed, as this reimagining of Bram Stoker's Dracula bridges the past and the future of the series. This tale absolutely serves as a standalone, hot-blooded, Gothic opera, but it also forms an unexpected trilogy with the first book in the series; Let Them Go and another at the tail end of Phase 2; Nightfall of the Wendigo. A wandering woman wakes on a dark Halloween in Eastern Europe, 1875 with no memory of the past week and a journal with pages torn out. A young noblewoman in fifteenth century Carpathia is put to the test, and begins a new dynasty that will transform her entire world… perhaps others too. As I sit at my desk, I'm looking at this framed, century-old newspaper on the wall. It's there because I never want to forget the story it tells or the choice it represents. I guess, in short, I'd call it the tale of the three ships. Everybody knows one of them - the Titanic. The one that 2,200 passengers thought was unsinkable. But that fateful night in the ice fields of the North Atlantic, the Titanic went down and over 1,500 passengers died. Only about 700 survived. Their only hope was a rescue. Only about ten miles away, the SS Californian saw the flares from the endangered Titanic. Captain Lord decided it was too risky to try to reach her in the dark, so the Californian stayed where she was. The Carpathia was a daunting 58 miles away when they spotted the flares and they heard the distress calls. There were some 700 passengers on board that night as Captain Rostron gave his fateful order, "Mr. Dean, turn this ship around." See, Captain Rostron ordered that all heat be turned off so that all the power could be directed to the ship's engines. As she steamed toward Titanic's last known location on the captain's orders, rooms were converted to infirmaries, hot food and drink were prepared and lifeboats were readied. Somehow, the Carpathia navigated around a deadly field of icebergs in the dark. Later, actually, Captain Rostron would say that it was like an unseen hand was guiding them. But his heart sank when he arrived at the site, because there was no trace of the mighty Titanic. What he did find was 20 lifeboats, carrying those 700 survivors, whose lives were in jeopardy from hours of exposure to 28-degree temperatures. Had it not been for the Carpathia's courageous intervention, there probably would have been no Titanic survivors. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Tale of Three Ships." Three ships. The Titanic. The ship where people thought they were safe, that in reality, was a ship of death where their only hope was a rescue. The Californian. The ship that was within reach of the dying people but did nothing to save them. The Carpathia. The ship that did whatever it took to rescue the dying, no matter the risks. We all either are - or were - on the Titanic. Because God says, "Everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard," and "the wages of sin is death." But in our word for today from the Word of God in Galatians 1:4, the Bible says, "Jesus gave His life for our sins...in order to rescue us." Our eternal destiny depends on our reaching for the Rescuer - Jesus. Some of us who have been rescued by Jesus are like the Californian. We have spiritually dying people within our reach. And the command of God from Scripture is to "rescue those being led away to death" (Proverbs 24:11). But we're doing nothing. It's too risky. We've got all these fears of what might happen if we tried to tell them about Jesus and if we tried to rescue them. But some of us are like the Carpathia; more concerned about the dying people than we are about ourselves. Doing whatever it takes to save them. Well, that would be like our Jesus. We'd be recognizing that we are under orders. And here's how the Bible puts it: to "snatch others from the fire and save them" (Jude 23). Three ships. This tale of three ships confronts me, and all of us, with a soul-searching question. It might even be a life-or-death question for you, "Which ship am I on?" If you don't have Jesus in your heart; if you've never been to Him to have your sins forgiven, your ship's going down even if you feel like it's unsinkable. No religion, no achievement, no relationship can save you except a relationship with Jesus Christ who died to pay for your sins. This is your day to turn in death for life and feeling dirty for feeling clean, and lonely for love, and hell for heaven. If you've never reached out to the Rescuer, would you do it today? Say, "Jesus, I'm yours." Go to our website where you can be sure you belong to Him. We'll show you how! It's ANewStory.com. This is the day of rescue!

Join me as I begin to explore the lives of Middle Eastern immigrants on Titanic, something I should have done long ago. The story of Titanic's “Miracle Boy” is not oft-told, perhaps because it's so heartbreaking, but the long and triumphant life of Michael Shafiq Peter Yusuf (Joseph is the Americanized version of the last name) is beautiful in its resiliency. Traveling on Titanic with his young mother and a tiny baby sister, Michael was separated from them in the chaos but managed to make it onto another lifeboat, reuniting with his family on Carpathia. What followed is marred with tragedy for many members of the family, but through their story we see the stories of immigration, Syrian families, third class, and the daily struggles of poverty. Do you know how many vampire films there are? Short answer: A LOT! This week we watched two vampire films with vampire slaughters in enclosed or isolated spaces. To be honest, it didn't start out with that theme. It was going to be vampire action films, but when one film is not an action thriller, you pivot. The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023) - Directed by André Øvredal This 2023 horror film tells the story of the doomed crew aboard the Demeter, a ship transporting mysterious cargo from Carpathia to London. Based on a chapter from Bram Stoker's Dracula, the film explores the terrifying events that unfold as a sinister presence stalks the crew during their ocean voyage. 30 Days of Night (2007) - Directed by David Slade Adapted from a comic book miniseries, this 2007 action horror film depicts the plight of a small Alaskan town plunged into a month of darkness. As the sun sets for 30 days, a bloodthirsty vampire horde descends upon the isolated community, forcing the remaining residents to fight for survival. Spoilers start around 5:03.

Many people are familiar with the RMS Carpathia as the vessel that picked up hundreds of Titanic survivors in the early morning of April 15th 1912. In this episode we discuss that monumental event in the Carpathia's history, in addition to what came before and after. Sources:"Arthur Henry Rostron: Captain of the RMS Carpathia." There have been many monster movies in the history of movies, but I do think that while there are many Vampire movies in existence, that Vampires are underrepresented. Yes, many of those Vampire movies are very popular, but I do believe that it's a genre of film that is lacking. Today's episode comes to you from the latest Vampire film, The Last Voyage of the Demeter! "The crew of the merchant ship Demeter sets sail from Carpathia to London to deliver a cargo of 50 unmarked wooden crates. However, they soon discover they're not alone as Dracula's unholy presence turns the trip into a nightmarish fight for survival." While, yes, it IS a Dracula film, it's still worth at least one watch. We do have some issues with the film when it comes to the style, and how the film was shot, but we definitely didn't hate it. If you like this genre, it's definitely worth it if you have not already gone to see it! SUBSCRIBE: Apple Podcasts | Android | Spotify | Pandora | RSS Tell us what you think! When I'm in a new city, I don't usually make visiting a local cemetery one of my sightseeing priorities. But I did in a ministry trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia. I visited the cemetery where 121 passengers of the doomed Titanic are buried; many with their names still unknown. Not long after the midnight radio transmission, "Have struck iceberg," three telegraph cable repair ships were dispatched from Halifax to make the 500-mile trip to the collision site to pick up the bodies of the victims. In a way, the aftermath of the sinking of the Titanic is a tale of two ships. One was the Carpathia, the ship that rescued hundreds who had made it into lifeboats, and then took them into New York Harbor. The Carpathia carried a ship full of rescued people, but not the Mackay Bennett. No, that was the first funeral ship to arrive at the scene of the sinking. All they found was 328 people, floating in their life jackets, frozen to death. The first one they found was a little two-year-old boy, floating face up. They were devastated. By the time they sailed into Halifax Harbor with every church bell in town tolling, there were three long rows of bodies on their deck - every one a person who did not have to die. Because see, those lifeboats had been half empty. But as the people in the water cried out for help, the people in the lifeboats just kept rowing away. So one ship carried those who had been rescued, and the other ship carried those no one cared enough to rescue. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Room in Your Lifeboat." Those people in the water died, not because the Titanic sank; they survived that. But because the people who were already saved did nothing for those who were dying. Dear God, is that us - the already saved, secure in our half-empty lifeboat, doing nothing about the spiritually dying people all around us? We're enjoying the fellowship of the folks already in the lifeboat, singing our lifeboat songs, and maybe even making the lifeboat bigger or more comfortable for us. But our coworkers, our fellow-students, our neighbors who don't have a relationship with Jesus, the only one who could forgive their sin, they just go on living and dying without Him. Our word for today from the Word of God paints a portrait of stark contrast as it describes the destinations of those who were rescued and those who never were. It's in 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10. "When the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with His powerful angels, He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and the majesty of His power." Think about it! Those are real people, condemned to pay for the sins Jesus already paid for on the cross - some because they didn't take what Jesus died to give them and others probably because no one ever told them how. The Bible goes on to describe this as the day when "He comes to be glorified in His holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed." Don't you want the people you know, the people who you love to be there? Then whatever has kept you from telling them about Jesus - your fears, your inadequacy, your hang-ups - can they possibly be as important as rescuing someone who's dying? In a sense, eternity will be a place where the ones someone rescued will sail to one port where there will be celebration and reunion. While those no one rescued will go to another port where there's only death and sorrow. You've got room in your lifeboat and there's still time. Why don't you spend the rest of your life pulling as many dying people into your lifeboat as you can?
A crew sailing from Varna (Bulgaria) by the Black Sea to England find that they are carrying very dangerous cargo. Based on a single chapter, the Captain's Log, from Bram Stoker's classic 1897 novel "Dracula", the story is set aboard the Russian schooner Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo - 24 unmarked wooden crates - from Carpathia to London. The film will detail the strange events that befell the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a terrifying presence on board the ship. When it finally arrived near Whitby Harbour, it was derelict. There was no trace of the crew.https://www.facebook.com/castofthepodhttps://twitter.com/CastofthePodhttps://www.instagram.com/castofthepod/https://www.youtube.com/@castofthepodhttps://www.reddit.com/r/CastOfThePod/https://www.instagram.com/cobweb411/Call the hotline 786-763-2278https://www.twitch.tv/castofthepodhttps://www.spreaker.com/show/castofthepodhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cast-of-the-pod/id1525172143?uo=4https://www.spreaker.com/show/castofthepodhttps://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc3ByZWFrZXIuY29tL3Nob3cvNDUxNjQ0OC9lcGlzb2Rlcy9mZWVkhttps://castbox.fm/channel/id3153438https://www.deezer.com/show/1559032 takes a day to updatehttps://podcastaddict.com/podcast/3051055 https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/cast-of-the-pod-1357456 https://radiopublic.com/cast-of-the-pod-6VNjy3https://www.stitcher.com/show/cast-of-the-podMusic by Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio and more

On this episode of Our American Stories, in April of 1912, a ship that previously mattered very little to Guglielmo Marconi pulled up to a crowd of thousands in New York Harbor. It was the Carpathia, the ship that rescued over 700 survivors from the ill-fated Titanic, in large measure due to his invention--the wireless telegraph. “If there is tens of thousands of hectares on the market then you might as well use them for conservation.”Christoph Promberger from Carpathia Wilderness Reserve, is rewilding an enormous woodland across Transylvania, Carpathia and Romania. He joins Ben Goldsmith from his home at the foot of the Carpathian mountains, a range which stretches through seven countries and home to some of Europe's rarest large mammals including brown bears, lynx and wolves. Over the last few decades the area has been affected by logging and lots of pristine forest has been lost. Christoph and Barbara have been fighting this deforestation through buying land in an attempt to protect it.Ben Goldsmith is a rewilding enthusiast and activist based in the UK. In this podcast he'll be speaking to the people behind some of the most exciting and dramatic rewilding projects on earth. It's easy to feel gloomy; climate science gets scarier and we lose more and more nature every year. However, the natural world is incredible and there are rays of hope and examples of habitats and wildlife returning and flourishing when it's given a helping hand. This podcast is produced by The Podcast Coach.
In the early morning hours of April 15, 1912. the White Star ocean liner RMS Titanic struck an iceberg en route to New York City and sank in the Atlantic Ocean. Survivors were rescued by the Cunard liner Carpathia and brought to their berth at Pier 54 on the rainy evening of April 18.On that very spot today, a fanciful waterfront development juts out into the Hudson River, a place called Little Island which opened in 2021. This recreational oasis will draw thousands of people, New Yorkers and tourists alike, this spring and summer. But on the southern side of Little Island, peering out of the water, are dozens of wooden posts – these are the remains of the former Pier 54.And it was on this pier, on April 18, 1912, that survivors of the Titanic disembarked and touched land. This is the story of the places that figured into the aftermath and the story of how New York memorialized those lost to the tragedy. And in the end we return to Little Island and to the ghost of Pier 54, the place where this disaster became reality for most people. Where survivors were greeted with joy and where many hundreds of people faced the reality that their loved ones were never coming home. On this episode of Our American Stories, on April 18th, 1912, New York Harbor was packed with reporters, onlookers, and family members of those who had been on the RMS Titanic who didn't know whether or not their loved ones had made it. All of them were waiting on the Carpathia, a ship that had mattered very little up to this point. At the front of the crowd was Guglielmo Marconi, the inventor of radio and founder of the Marconi Company. On board was his surviving wireless operator-Harold Bride. William Hazelgrove, author of One Hundred and Sixty Minutes: The Race to Save the RMS Titanic tells the story of both men and the technology that helped save over 700 people. Part 3/3. News of Titanic's fate sent shockwaves around the world; stories and illustrations of that fateful night splashed across newspaper stands on every corner.
