But, he had a helping hand in the form of General Pug Ismay, soldier, statesman and diplomat. Joining today are two historians, John Kiszely, the author of a biography of Ismay, and Gordon Corrigan, author of a book on Churchill. Join us to discuss his legacy with his latest biographer, Lieutenant General Sir John Kiszely. Hastings (Pug) Ismay was a general who never commanded beyond lieutenant colonel, rising through the ranks as a staff officer. This brought him into contact with politicians, like Churchill, and senior military commanders such as General Eisenhower, with whom he formed an enduring friendship. After retirement from the Army, Ismay briefly became a minister before serving as NATO Secretary General, 1952-1957. His time in office saw many challenges - the Soviet invasion of Hungary, Suez, the Cyprus Crisis of 1963-64 and the death of Stalin. Steering NATO through these crises required judgement, patience and humility. His legacy is that of NATO with a strong central headquarters connecting its political and military dimensions, and organisation with a global security perspective and a Secretary General who remains the servant of the Alliance. Our guest this episode, Lieutenant General Sir John Kiszely , served in the British Army for 40 years, including in the 1982 Falklands War for which he was awarded the Military Cross, in Bosnia and Iraq. His book ‘Anatomy of a Campaign: The British Fiasco in Norway 1940' won RUSI's inaugural Duke of Wellington Medal for Military History. His latest book, ‘General Hastings ‘Pug' Ismay: Soldier, Statesman, Diplomat' was published in 2024.

To keep the Soviets out, the Americans in and the Germans down." Over langetermijnvisie met nieuwe initiatieven, een scherp oog voor de loyaliteit vanuit Washington en soepele charme bij consistente hardnekkigheid.***Verder lezenDirk U. It is in theaters now!!Thanks to the Pasadena International Film Festival and Unsinkable's AMAZING marketing team, Hawks Hill Films, I was able to not only attend as official press but met Director Cody Hartman, Producer/Screenwriter Brian Hartman, Actor Cotter Smith,  and Composer Scott Glasgow. This is a remarkable film that I HIGHLY encourage you Titanic gurus out there to see. Take the fam-- its rated PG because --- no boobs! But seriously, my biggest upset was it wasn't long enough for me but... we are in an era of 3 hour films (I'm looking at you Oppenheimer & Dune 2) so it felt far too short for me. I highly suggest you see the film before you listen to avoid SPOILERS ... Spoiler: the Titanic sinks. #bruceismaySLAM #fleetjusticeSip sip hooray... its time for Tea-Tanic!

I got to see "Unsinkable: Titanic Untold" on the BIG SCREEN before its theatrical release next Friday, 4/12/2024. Thanks to the Pasadena International Film Festival and Unsinkable's AMAZING marketing team, I was able to not only attend as official press but started my morning sitting down with Northern Ireland stage and film actress, Jayne Wisener. Jayne was absolutely a GEM & a total trooper chatting with me, despite her slightly tired voice. She has been traveling all over with the cast and crew of Unsinkable as we approach the official release-- perfectly timed on Titanic Anniversary weekend. Jayne and I were both a little nervous but quickly fell into sync --and not just because we had matching blazers on.  She even suggest a new soundbite to add to the pod--- and girl, I included it just for you!!! Stir yourself a cup... its time for Tea-Tanic!

Paul from the awesome History Rage podcast joins Sean to discuss Titanic film myths and mistakes. In a reversal from his usual hosting duties, where he listens to historians rage, Paul let's rip on Titanic (1997) describing it as: "The barely remembered, mostly made-up, bewildered ramblings of an incredibly wealthy woman who is trying to remember back to what happened 80 years ago". Discussion Points: -The shedload of myths which are crow-barred into Titanic films. -Sean still isn't happy with Julian Fellowes (2012) Titanic. -The myths surrounding third-class passengers. -The misconceptions of Edwardian Society. -The portrayal of First Officer Murdoch. -The trope of "evil Ismay". -The myth around the Titanic and it's speed. -Titanic (1943), the film made by the National Socialist Dictatorship of Germany. It is dreadful. Raised Questions: -Do you pray for Titanic (1997) to end once the ship sinks? -Did you know about the Quarantine rules onboard transatlantic ships in 1912? -Would you rather see Sean working as a seamstress? -Why doesn't Ruth DeWitt Bukater marry someone else? -Do you agree with Paul, that Titanic is vapid sh*te? -Did A Night to Remember (1958) do a better love story than Titanic (1997)? -Is cutting your mother's toenails a better use of your time than watching Titanic (1943)? Spoiler, yes it is. Check out other Titanic (1997) reviews by: -Seismic Cinema -SP Filmviewers Thanks for Listening! Review It Yourself is now on YouTube! Ismay is ready for a relaxing summer reconnecting with her fiance at his family's luxurious beachfront cottage. But before Remy can join her, a hurricane bears down on Mariners Island. Alone in the large house, Ismay makes a disturbing discovery in Remy's childhood closet. She's not sure what to make of it, but is relieved when the property's caretaker, Bo, checks in on her. Bo's home is damaged, so they temporarily shelter together, and Ismay is comforted by his quiet strength. But the unannounced arrival of a family member puts Bo back at his place and changes Ismay's summer into something other than what she wants -- or ever expected. With so many reasons to feel unsettled, Ismay finds herself turning to Bo, who gives her more than a sense of security; there's something about him that makes her feel alive, stirring her to wonder what life might be like if she chose a different path... As Ismay grows closer to Bo, she begins to hope the reclusive caretaker might eventually let down his guard. But when she finds out that he has secrets, too, she begins to question how well she knows any of the men in her life -- and how well she can trust her own heart. Learn more about your ad choices. We had such a great time talking to ISMAY.  They are such a down to earth beautiful soul you won't want to miss this interview!  ... and who doesn't like talking about puppets ?  ******** A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ISMAY AND THEIR NEWEST RELEASE: For Avery Hellman, the Bay Area native behind ISMAY's unique sound, the album builds a bridge between past and present. "I create music that's informed by older traditions and makes you feel the way old folk music does," they say, "but it doesn't sound like something you've heard before." Like Songs of Sonoma Mountain, ISMAY's critically acclaimed debut, Desert Pavement was heavily influenced by the California ranch where Hellman spent most of their 20s working the land. "My mom bought the ranch when I was 19 years old," Hellman remembers. "Environmental restoration was very important to her, and I was with her every step of the way, working to develop the ranch, raise cattle, replant creeks, and tend to the sheep. The perspective of my songwriting is very rooted in ranch life." ************ You can find ISMAY at www.ismaymusic.com , Facebook and Instagram (@ismaymusic) Be sure to listen to their great new album DESERT PAVEMENT today! ************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.     If you go to www.linktr.ee/knowgoodmusic you can find all the links to the podcast platforms we are on.    Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see video promos from some of our interviews.  Just search "know good music"."

The ship was en route from Liverpool, England, to New York City but faced severe weather conditions and navigational errors that led to its tragic demise. The impact caused the vessel to quickly sink, resulting in the loss of around 550 lives, making it one of the deadliest maritime disasters of its time. Despite rescue efforts by local residents, the combination of rough seas, inadequate life-saving equipment, and the remote location of the wreck contributed to the high death toll, leaving a haunting legacy in maritime history.Original theme music by Sean Sigfried.http://www.shipwrecksandseadogs.com/.

As wars of liberation in Africa and Asia shook the post-war world, a cohort of activists from East and Central Africa, specifically the region encompassing present-day Malawi, Zambia, Uganda and mainland Tanzania, asked what role they could play in the global anticolonial landscape.  In African Activists in a Decolonising World: The Making of an Anticolonial Culture, 1952-1966 (Cambridge UP, 2023), Ismay Milford presents a social and intellectual history of decolonisation and anticolonialism in the 1950s and 1960s. Drawing on multi-archival research, she brings together their trajectories for the first time, reconstructing the anticolonial culture that underpinned their journeys to Delhi, Cairo, London, Accra and beyond. Forming committees and publishing pamphlets, these activists worked with pan-African and Afro-Asian solidarity projects, Cold War student internationals, spiritual internationalists and diverse pressure groups. Milford argues that a focus on their everyday labour and knowledge production highlights certain limits of transnational and international activism, opening up a critical - albeit less heroic - perspective on the global history of anticolonial work and thought.
