On 25th December 1941, General Alan Brooke (or Alanbrooke) was appointed Chief of the Imperial General Staff, the commanding officer of the British Army during the Second World War. His new boss, Winston Spencer Churchill was a hard taskmaster with high standards who had no problem with sacking generals. But, he had a helping hand in the form of General Pug Ismay, soldier, statesman and diplomat. Joining today are two historians, John Kiszely, the author of a biography of Ismay, and Gordon Corrigan, author of a book on Churchill. Today we discuss the dynamics between the three men and other generals such as Montgomery, Wavell and Auchinleck. In late 1941 Winston Churchill lost his temper with his top generals over their disagreement in supplying Stalin with tanks and aircraft. Their obstruction caused a furious row at the heart of the British government. The man who resolved it? General Hastings Pug Ismay, Churchill's right hand man throughout the war, who later played an important role in the Partition of India and became Secretary General of the newly formed NATO. Historian and former senior commander John Kiszely joins to discuss Ismay and Churchill, the Partition and we speculate as to how Ismay would have dealt with Donald Trump. Join us to discuss his legacy with his latest biographer, Lieutenant General Sir John Kiszely. Hastings (Pug) Ismay was a general who never commanded beyond lieutenant colonel, rising through the ranks as a staff officer. This brought him into contact with politicians, like Churchill, and senior military commanders such as General Eisenhower, with whom he formed an enduring friendship. After retirement from the Army, Ismay briefly became a minister before serving as NATO Secretary General, 1952-1957. His time in office saw many challenges - the Soviet invasion of Hungary, Suez, the Cyprus Crisis of 1963-64 and the death of Stalin. Steering NATO through these crises required judgement, patience and humility. His legacy is that of NATO with a strong central headquarters connecting its political and military dimensions, and organisation with a global security perspective and a Secretary General who remains the servant of the Alliance. Our guest this episode, Lieutenant General Sir John Kiszely , served in the British Army for 40 years, including in the 1982 Falklands War for which he was awarded the Military Cross, in Bosnia and Iraq. His book ‘Anatomy of a Campaign: The British Fiasco in Norway 1940' won RUSI's inaugural Duke of Wellington Medal for Military History. His latest book, ‘General Hastings ‘Pug' Ismay: Soldier, Statesman, Diplomat' was published in 2024.

To keep the Soviets out, the Americans in and the Germans down." In a reversal from his usual hosting duties, where he listens to historians rage, Paul let's rip on Titanic (1997) describing it as: "The barely remembered, mostly made-up, bewildered ramblings of an incredibly wealthy woman who is trying to remember back to what happened 80 years ago". Discussion Points: -The shedload of myths which are crow-barred into Titanic films. -Sean still isn't happy with Julian Fellowes (2012) Titanic. -The myths surrounding third-class passengers. -The misconceptions of Edwardian Society. -The portrayal of First Officer Murdoch. -The trope of "evil Ismay". -The myth around the Titanic and it's speed. -Titanic (1943), the film made by the National Socialist Dictatorship of Germany. It is dreadful. In Brenda Novak's latest book, Tourist Season (Mira Books, 2024), Ismay Chalmers' plans to spend a relaxing summer at the beach are derailed when she discovers the wealthy family she is marrying into is hiding many scandals and secrets. Ismay is ready for a relaxing summer reconnecting with her fiance at his family's luxurious beachfront cottage. But before Remy can join her, a hurricane bears down on Mariners Island. Alone in the large house, Ismay makes a disturbing discovery in Remy's childhood closet. She's not sure what to make of it, but is relieved when the property's caretaker, Bo, checks in on her. Bo's home is damaged, so they temporarily shelter together, and Ismay is comforted by his quiet strength. But the unannounced arrival of a family member puts Bo back at his place and changes Ismay's summer into something other than what she wants -- or ever expected. With so many reasons to feel unsettled, Ismay finds herself turning to Bo, who gives her more than a sense of security; there's something about him that makes her feel alive, stirring her to wonder what life might be like if she chose a different path... As Ismay grows closer to Bo, she begins to hope the reclusive caretaker might eventually let down his guard. But when she finds out that he has secrets, too, she begins to question how well she knows any of the men in her life -- and how well she can trust her own heart. Learn more about your ad choices. Matt and Rob sit down with ISMAY to talk about their new album Desert Pavement.   We go into other topics like the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival (in which their grandfather founded and their family still runs), the documentary Finding Lucinda (about the great singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams), Ismay's time working on a ranch with they're mother, the Stranger in the Barn video (and the puppet!) and much more! We had such a great time talking to ISMAY.  They are such a down to earth beautiful soul you won't want to miss this interview!  ... and who doesn't like talking about puppets ?  ******** A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ISMAY AND THEIR NEWEST RELEASE: For Avery Hellman, the Bay Area native behind ISMAY's unique sound, the album builds a bridge between past and present. "I create music that's informed by older traditions and makes you feel the way old folk music does," they say, "but it doesn't sound like something you've heard before." Like Songs of Sonoma Mountain, ISMAY's critically acclaimed debut, Desert Pavement was heavily influenced by the California ranch where Hellman spent most of their 20s working the land. "My mom bought the ranch when I was 19 years old," Hellman remembers. "Environmental restoration was very important to her, and I was with her every step of the way, working to develop the ranch, raise cattle, replant creeks, and tend to the sheep. The perspective of my songwriting is very rooted in ranch life." ************ You can find ISMAY at www.ismaymusic.com , Facebook and Instagram (@ismaymusic) Be sure to listen to their great new album DESERT PAVEMENT today! ************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.     If you go to www.linktr.ee/knowgoodmusic you can find all the links to the podcast platforms we are on.    Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see video promos from some of our interviews.  Just search "know good music"."

The ship was en route from Liverpool, England, to New York City but faced severe weather conditions and navigational errors that led to its tragic demise. The impact caused the vessel to quickly sink, resulting in the loss of around 550 lives, making it one of the deadliest maritime disasters of its time. Despite rescue efforts by local residents, the combination of rough seas, inadequate life-saving equipment, and the remote location of the wreck contributed to the high death toll, leaving a haunting legacy in maritime history.Original theme music by Sean Sigfried.http://www.shipwrecksandseadogs.com/.

As wars of liberation in Africa and Asia shook the post-war world, a cohort of activists from East and Central Africa, specifically the region encompassing present-day Malawi, Zambia, Uganda and mainland Tanzania, asked what role they could play in the global anticolonial landscape.  In African Activists in a Decolonising World: The Making of an Anticolonial Culture, 1952-1966 (Cambridge UP, 2023), Ismay Milford presents a social and intellectual history of decolonisation and anticolonialism in the 1950s and 1960s. Drawing on multi-archival research, she brings together their trajectories for the first time, reconstructing the anticolonial culture that underpinned their journeys to Delhi, Cairo, London, Accra and beyond. Forming committees and publishing pamphlets, these activists worked with pan-African and Afro-Asian solidarity projects, Cold War student internationals, spiritual internationalists and diverse pressure groups. Milford argues that a focus on their everyday labour and knowledge production highlights certain limits of transnational and international activism, opening up a critical - albeit less heroic - perspective on the global history of anticolonial work and thought. O yıl ilkokul dörde gidiyordum. Demek ki onumdan on birime sivriliyordum. Her şeyi her şeye uydurması yüzünden. İkinci lakabı “Güzel Ayşe” idi. Güzel, çok güzel bir kadındı, o ayrı. Ama lakabını hak etmesinin hikayesi başkaydı. İsmini aldığım İsmail dedem, zannederim dokuz yüz onda gitmiş askere. Demek ki Balkan Savaşı'nı, Çanakkale'yi, Suriye Cephesi'ni, hatta Galiçya'yı falan görmüş. Hangilerine katılmış, bilmiyorum. Yıkılan, tükenen, nefesi kesilen Osmanlı'nın son demlerinde yalın ayak, başı kabak, yemeye peksimet bulsa şükreden o son askerlerinden biriymiş. “Savaş bitti' demişler İsmail dedeme, “evine dönebilirsin.” Senelerden on sekiz. Biz dönelim Güzel Ayşe'ye. Eşi İsmail dedem askere giderken on sekiz yaşındaymış Güzel Ayşe. Yirmi gittilerse on, on gittilerse beş dönmüşler. Kara fırının ucundan dönünce İsmail dede, Güzel Ayşe'nin kalbi yerinden sökülüp de çıkacak gibi olmuş. Eri, beyi, yoldaşı sekiz yılın ardından karşısındaymış işte.

Sean is joined by Arron from the ‘Time To Talk Titanic' podcast to review Titanic (1953). Arron and Sean have surprisingly similar points, despite watching the film separately, and talk about the fantastic acting on show. Arron asks interesting questions such as: -Why did they make Captain Smith “a total dish” and a “psycho”? On the other hand, Sean compares the film to Oliver! Titanic (1953) is very musical, much to Arron's annoyance. It made him want to jump overboard! A film packed with stupendous performances and an Academy-Award winning script, this is a must-see. I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed making it. Thanks for listening! *Correction: the passenger who allegedly heard Ismay encourage Captain Smith to light the last boilers was Mrs Elizabeth Lines*

Needless to say, this year has been both odd and extraordinary. Odd? --- Well, Pick your poison. Extraordinary? --- Because we spent the year having amazing conversations with dozens of creative change agents who are kicking ass making a real difference in the upside-down world we live in. These conversations have helped us at the Center for the Study of Art & Community manage the lurking shadows and have sparked some new ideas and even optimism. We're excited to be starting our second season on February 2, but in the meantime we thought it might be nice to revisit some of our most popular past episodes. Next up is Normando Ismay, The Loving Trickster. After our initial airing of this episode, we received dozens of emails thanking us for pulling back the curtain on what one listener described as "the wonderfully vibrant and wacky alternative Bizzoso Universe. A place we all need to visit over and over in these grey and uncertain times." So, we invite you to sit back, have a listen, and hitch a ride on Normando's Bizzoso Universe. Normando Ismay – A Loving TricksterIn this episode, Normando Ismay introduces us to ephemeral places like Chilecito and the Mattress Factory. Cafes Beirut. Bizzoso and Success, and an extraordinary cast of characters. that includes Papa Bizzoso, the one-time child, preacher Contralabias, the smuggler, the Last Inca, Pedro Borjehas. And Danimite the drug dealer who succomes in the legendary Atlanta crack attack. BIONormando Ismay was born in the city of All the Saints of the New Rioja in northwest Argentina. As a young adult, he came to the United States, settling in Atlanta to pursue a career as a visual artist. Since then, he has worked in a variety of media including metal, painting, sculpture and installation art. He built a barn-like structure in his backyard and began the operation of the Little Beirut Art Space, a gallery/performance venue for visual art exhibits, poetry readings, storytelling, film, music and dance. At this time, he also began an integration of visual and performing art, combining Andean flutes, drums and stories of magical realism into large- and small-scale performances and performance installations. Normando creates work in Spanish, English and in a bilingual blending. Some of his works include “The Last Inca”, about Pedro de Bohorquez who passes as an Inca and controls northwest Argentina; “Contralabias”, about a North American smuggler, the invention of lipstick and the birth of Argentina.   Normando's large-scale performance installations accommodate other performing artists and combine paintings, signage, sculptures, video projections, masks, seating, lighting and a stage. Café Bizzoso, Café Cultural de Chamblee, The Condor's Next Hotel, Bannaland, The Mattress Factory Lounge and Dumpsite, to name a few.  Normando's work has been presented throughout Atlanta and the southeast, as well as in New York, Argentina and Europe. The New York Times, High Performance, the Atlanta Constitution, Art Papers, Mundo Hispanico, and other publications have written about his work. He has received grants from the City of Atlanta Bureau of Cultural Affairs, Fulton County Arts Council, Georgia Council for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1991 he received the Paul Robeson award in Cultural Democracy. A one-act play set on a sunny afternoon on the north-west coast of Ireland. Pat Scully, a man of 60, stands at the open door of his house and looks out at this garden and the hill-side beyond. Over the course of the action his son John, his daughter-in-law Mary and a visiting English painter and his wife - Kenneth and Ismay Leslie - come and go. John seems quite taken with Ismay. He pays her a good deal of attention. Pat does not like this and becomes angry with his son on Mary's behalf. Mary pays no heed to John's behaviour and encourages the visitors to stay and experience a cèilidh to celebrate the end of the harvest. Kenneth announces they must leave that afternoon and Mary insists they dance a four-hand reel before they go. The couples swap partners and dance. John enjoys the opportunity to dance with Ismay and makes no effort to dance the proper steps. Mary tries to steer Kenneth around the floor and the couples end up colliding. The Leslies then say their goodbyes. Pat is furious with John for flirting with Ismay and attempts to strike him with his stick but falls. John and Mary come to his rescue and settle him. As Pat dozes in the chair, John and Mary talk. John acknowledges his bad behaviour and realizes his father was acting on Mary's behalf. They reconnect and reaffirm their love and commitment to each other. Pat, over-hearing the conversation, understands he has witnessed a rare and intimate moment in their relationship and is happy. A play about marriage, the nature of relationships and how what is observed from a distance can often have little bearing on the truth between two people. This album was recorded in a 100-year-old sheep barn at the ranch, seeking to immerse the listener in the world of Sonoma Mountain, and to evoke the sense that we aren’t as separate from nature as we may think. Co-produced by Robert Cheek (Engineer: Band of Horses, Chelsea Wolfe) and Avery Hellman, Songs of Sonoma Mountain features live vulnerable performances that bring out the character of the space. It's about how the stories we create in our minds, fictionalized, rendered in our imagination may end up coming true in unexpected ways. And it's about how our minds may create, as a means to cope with the tragedies we may one day encounter...   Links to the full record on our site: https://www.ismaymusic.com/music Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/77sFDwywxshHFqKu6rVXIp?si=xlKBJrMMRFyvU0HYQ_F18Q Apple Music: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/ismay/1340597459 Souncloud: https://soundcloud.com/ismaymusic/sets/songs-of-sonoma-mountain   Produced by Avery Hellman Mixing, Mastering & Editing by Ben Montoya Music by Ismay

Maximization of damage. That's the purpose of the cluster bomb. These weapons, which can be traced back to the First World War, when the Kaiser would not give permission for their use, are still being dropped today. Not only that, but duds, unexploded during their deployment during the Second World War, the Vietnam War and the Gulf War still litter the earth. The cluster bomb is a paradox. A force will drop them to gain the advantage in a war, but will then not be able to move forward into the spaces where they have been dropped, or engage in post-war reconstruction. John Ismay is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and served as the gunnery officer aboard a destroyer in the Pacific before becoming a Navy special operations officer. He is qualified in deep-sea diving and salvage, parachuting and bomb disposal, and completed a number of overseas deployments, including one to northern Iraq during the 2007 surge. Now working at the New York Times Washington Bureau, he joined James to talk about his research into the development of the cluster bomb, its impact and his personal experiences of this lethal weapon. Amongst other things, they discuss transnational histories of activism, the usefulness of "space" as a historical concept, and whether we can learn anything about our present political crisis from postwar visions of the decolonised future.
