A NEW EXHIBIT ON A FAMOUS DISASTER HITS TOWN It's all about the Titanic, which of course was a massive ocean liner that hit an iceberg and sank, taking many lives with it. Now there is an exhibit in town, Titanic: An Immersive Voyage that opens in Denver on May 7th. It's been 40 years since the Titanic wreck was discovered by Navy officer Robert Ballard, 400 miles off Newfoundland's coast, ending a 73-year mystery. Now, as we mark this historic find, Exhibition Hub and Fever bring the Titanic's story to life in Denver with the “Titanic: An Immersive Voyage” exhibition. Come aboard the Titanic on the fateful night of April 14, 1912, when the "unsinkable" ship met its tragic end, and explore the wreck's rediscovery from Ballard in 1985, that captivated the world. I'm chatting with John Zaller, the Executive Producer from Exhibit Hub about what you can expect today at 12:30. Get your tickets now by clicking here.

In this episode of the "How to Protect the Ocean" podcast, host Andrew Lewin interviews Dr. Paige Hoel, a recent PhD graduate in coastal eutrophication from UCLA and a popular science communicator on TikTok. With nearly 100,000 followers, Paige has gained recognition for her engaging storytelling about ocean science, particularly focusing on topics like the impacts of human activity on ocean health and the intricacies of coastal ecosystems. Paige shares her journey into oceanography, which began at a young age when she became fascinated by the ocean after watching a documentary about Dr. Robert Ballard's discoveries. Her academic path was influenced by her family's strong scientific background, leading her to pursue a PhD in a field that combines her interests in biology, chemistry, and environmental science. During the conversation, Paige discusses how she developed her science communication skills, particularly through teaching a climate change course at UCLA. She emphasizes the importance of making complex scientific concepts accessible to a general audience, especially non-majors who may not have a strong background in science. This experience inspired her to create content on TikTok, where she initially focused on sharing tips for undergraduate and graduate students before transitioning to more ocean-focused content. Paige's TikTok videos highlight various oceanographic topics, including coastal eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, and the effects of wastewater treatment on marine ecosystems. She balances education and entertainment effectively, making science relatable and engaging for her audience. Her ability to tell compelling stories about ocean science raises awareness and encourages viewers to think critically about their relationship with the ocean. Overall, the episode showcases the power of social media, particularly TikTok, as a platform for science communication, allowing scientists like Paige to reach a broader audience and inspire curiosity about oceanography and environmental issues. At the same time, they emphasize that over-regulation of ocean exploration and mapping, with human-occupied vehicles and robots, is not needed because of the stellar safety record of these activities and their importance to nationall, natural, and economic security. The size of the ship and the shoes seized Robert Ballard's attention when he saw the wreckage of the Titanic from a submarine deep below the sea. “The first thing I saw coming out of the gloom…was this wall, this giant wall of…steel that rose over 100 and some feet above us,” Ballard told the Associated Press. “I never looked down at the Titanic. I looked up at the Titanic. Nothing was small.” In 1986, Ballard and a group of explorers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution helped find the famous passenger ship. The Titanic struck a huge piece of ice and sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in 1912. This week, Woods Hole released a video of the wreckage recorded by the explorers more than three kilometers below the ocean's surface.pproved malaria vaccine to African countries as soon as possible. Ballard saw the Titanic's windows. “It was like people looking back at us. It was pretty haunting actually,” he said. There were no human remains left, but he saw shoes, including what appeared to be the shoes of a mother and a baby. “After the Titanic sank, those that went into the water that didn't have lifejackets died of hypothermia and their bodies came raining down,” he said. The Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912. The vessel was on its first trip from Southampton, England, to New York City. The Woods Hole team, in partnership with the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea, discovered the final resting place of the ship in 3,780 meters of water on September 1, 1985, using an underwater camera. The newly released video was from a second research trip the following year. There had been earlier efforts to find the sunken ship. But the 1985 discovery and the 1986 trip were made possible by underwater vehicles that could withstand the severe conditions, said Woods Hole engineer Andy Bowen. “The water is near freezing temperatures and probably the biggest challenge is the remoteness of the location, and in particular the harsh environment with regard to the pressure our equipment is exposed to,” he said. “We had a small memorial service for all those that had died. But we were there, we were at this spot,” Ballard said. The video is part of the 25th-anniversary release of the Academy Award-winning movie Titanic. “More than a century after the loss of Titanic, the human stories embodied in the great ship continue to resonate,” James Cameron, the film's director, said in a statement. Ballard said the story of the Titanic continues to interest people to this day for many reasons. It was at the time the world's largest passenger ship and was supposed to be unsinkable. Its passengers included some of the world's wealthiest and most famous people. After it sank, the world heard remarkable stories of heroism and bravery by the crew and passengers. He said: “I think everyone wonders in their own mind ‘If I were there, what would I have done?'”“我们为所有死去的人举行了小型追悼会。

The Seafaring Life Of ‘Modern-Day Captain Nemo,' Robert Ballard In 1985, oceanographer Robert Ballard was sent on a secret deep-sea search operative with a very specific mission: to seek two sunken nuclear submarines. Ballard, who by then had explored the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and helped design deep-sea research submersibles, was assigned by the U.S. Navy to investigate and take images of the U.S.S. Thresher and U.S.S. Scorpion. But locating these two wreckages wouldn't bring him to fame—instead, it was another watery grave he would find along the way. After he located the two subs, Ballard had time left in the mission to satiate a hunt he had begun nearly a decade prior: He discovered the R.M.S. Titanic, which sank into the North Atlantic 110 years ago. While the Titanic might be his most publicized finding, the famed marine archaeologist has adventured beneath the waves on more than 150 expeditions that have broadened our understanding of the oceans and the planet. “We think there's probably more history in the deep sea than all of the museums of the world combined—and we're only now opening those doors to those museums,” he says. Ballard's recorded the activity of hydrothermal vents, the ecology of hot springs on the ocean floor, and the diversity of incredible marine creatures. In excerpts from two conversations in the Science Friday archives (originally recorded in 2000 and 2009), Ballard describes the 1985 expedition in which he discovered the wreck of the Titanic. He also discusses the value of combining the efforts of oceanographers, engineers, and social scientists to study the world's deep oceans. Plus, Ballard elaborates on his belief that some undersea finds should be left preserved and protected, and his work in expanding access to ocean research via telepresence and computer links.   Meet The Drag Artists Who Are Making Science More Accessible Each generation has had science communicators who brought a sometimes stuffy, siloed subject into homes, inspiring minds young and old. Scientists like Don Herbert, Carl Sagan, and Bill Nye are classic examples. But our modern age of social media has brought more diverse communicators into the forefront of science communication, including the wild, wonderful world of STEM drag stars. These are queer folk who mix the flashy fashions of the drag world with science education. Some, like Kyne, use TikTok as a medium to teach concepts like math. Others, like Pattie Gonia, use drag to attract more people to the great outdoors. The accessibility of the internet has made these personalities available to a wide audience. Kyne and Pattie Gonia join Ira to talk about the magic drag can bring to science education, and why they think the future of SciComm looks more diverse than the past. This segment originally aired on February 11, 2022.  Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... Just like THIS one!Mr. and Mrs. Ballard were always HELPING and encouraging their son, Robert. He wanted to be an underwater explorer when he grew up, and to his surprise, when he told his mom and dad, they didn't laugh! Instead, they said, “Maybe you need to become an oceanographer.” They actually encouraged him to live his dream. Well, young Robert did start living his dream. In school, he studied hard in all his subjects, especially science. He learned all he could about undersea life, and sunken ships, and underwater land formations. When Robert grew up, he became an officer in the Navy, and after that, he became an explorer. In 1985, Robert Ballard and his HELPERS designed a special submarine that would take a crew over 12-thousand feet below the surface of the ocean. That's over 2-miles straight down! With that special submarine, he was able to find the most famous shipwreck of the twentieth century – the R.M.S. Titanic. He has also made many other discoveries. But Dr. Ballard is more than an explorer. He is a teacher, and he has created a program for fourth graders all the way through 9th graders to learn about the science of ocean exploration. He also spends a lot of time visiting students in schools all over America and teaching them to live their dreams just as he has done. Robert Ballard has not only lived his dream... in the process, he has become a HERO! The Tristan Strong Keeps Punching paperback is available now! BE WARNED: Due to COVID-related printing delays, you'll want to order your books for the holidays ASAP. Daughter of the Deep‘s U.S. release date is Oct. 26. Please don't share any spoilers! Subjectify will have a spoiler-free review up on that date. Have you met King Cotton yet? All the Cursed Carnival authors are now all NYT bestsellers! We attended the Daughter of the Deep virtual event. Have YOU read Mysterious Island? Robert Ballard is SO. COOL. And definitely a son of Poseidon Octopuses are a little creepy. Cool. But creepy. Daughter of the Deep has been optioned for a Disney+ feature film! *Insert firework sounds* We'll probably get more background information from the Percy Jackson show than we got from the books. We're gonna keep talking about Teen Wolf. Sorry not sorry. We're still trying to be patient about casting. The Percy Jackson world lends itself to animation, and we stand by that. But The Kane Chronicles is definitely a live-action film. Yes, we heard about the Nico di Angelo news. We know a little bit about the process behind this co-writing venture. Mark Oshiro seems super cool. The year 2023 is going to be JAM-PACKED. Rick is working on something related to Irish mythology, but we don't have much information yet. Rick Riordan Presents Did you notice Karen got a new mic!? Rick Riordan Presents is a beast of an imprint, and we love it so much. #NotAPhase Let's jump into the books from this imprint that Karen HAS read. The Pandava Quintet by Roshani Chokshi is definitely a favorite. Have you listened to Prophecy Radio episode 2, where we talk about Cursed Carnival? Paola Santiago gets to explore such a spooky and cool world. Beware cliffhangers! Graci Kim is cool and she loves food and Karen loves food and you should read The Last Fallen Star. Witches! Magic! Baked goods! Dragon Pearl is getting a sequel! Karen got an ARC of Tiger Honor and did a little dance. Kristen explains what the heck an ARC is. We have a soft spot for fox spirits. Karen has read The Storm Runner and totally meant to keep reading the series, but life got in the way. This series is also getting a spinoff duology! Zane's destiny is kind of a buzzkill. It pains Karen every. single. day. that she hasn't finished the Sal and Gabi series. Sometimes staying up to date on all these books is hard. P.S. Let us know how you want us to handle talking about the individual series in the future! Tristan Strong by Kwame Mbalia has super powerful titles and awesome covers! Long live Gum Baby! Rebecca Roanhorse's standalone Race to the Sun might be a good one to start with. It discusses some really topical issues and would be important for kids to read. We're obsessed with the title of Rise of the Chaos Goddess. Sarwat Chadda seems like a hilarious guy. Which one will Kristen read first!? The premise for Pahua and the Soul Stealer sounds so cool. Kristen has heard of the Hmong people before thanks to the Olympics! Foreshadowing: We mention our cat. Please make Karen's dreams come true. Let's talk about the RRP books that aren't out yet! In Serwa Boatang's Guide to Vampire Hunting, pronunciation of Serwa's name is literally a plot point. Not the fireflies! It's giving us very much Teen Wolf vibes. Very much Buffy. Daniel Jose Older sounds like he's lived such an interesting life. Finally a young adult novel!! *whispers diabolically* Enemies to lovers! We just want magic to be real. The Whimsies sounds so fun and mischievous. So many of these books are set in NYC. Don't forget the Moko Magic! Chapter Reviews This week we're discussing chapters 5 and 6 of The Lightning Thief. Karen was not expecting to have so many feelings about Mr. D. The nectar sounds amazing and terrible at the same time. Chapter 5 blows this whole world wide open. More Annabeth, please! Percy is so dramatic sometimes. Kristen is getting Big Brother vibes from chapter 6. Finally, Camp Half-Blood in the flesh. Who DOESN'T like to show off in the bathroom once in a while? Chiron is giving us Dumbledore vibes, and we don't love it. Did Chiron know Percy was Poseidon's son? We now know Grover's official age! Percy has so much left to learn. A surprise visitor drops by! Technically, Chiron didn't lie about the attic. Karen loves the explanation of monster archetypes. We got our first listener feedback! We were perfectly prepared for this topic 2 weeks ago when we were thrilled to host none other than Dr. Robert Ballard, world famous ocean explorer and discoverer of the RMS Titanic. We had an engaging discussion about his recent book Into the Deep, A Memoir by the Man who found Titanic. Today, we will explore the remarkable field of ocean discovery that Bob Ballard helped to advance, and to a greater extent, popularize for current and future generations. Ocean Mapping, Exploration and Characterization has big blue economy implications. Mapping, for example, is critical for fisheries management, offshore energy development, and safe marine transportation. Exploration and characterization support identification of sources for critical minerals, energy, and regions requiring conservation. Mapping and exploration are also helping us identify our Extended Continental Shelf, an area of nearly 1 million square miles which we hope to add to our EEZ.
