On today's episode of The Exempt List, Charles McDonald is joined by NFL writer Diante Lee from The Ringer to take a look at how a few former defensive coaches will fare as a new head coaches for their teams. They start the show by discussing a few current topics in the NFL including Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper getting approval for public funds in order to renovate the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Even though fans will be happy to have much improved stadium, there seems to be a bitter feeling helping an owner than hasn't helped his team much in the past few years.Charles and Diante then shift to their main topic for the episode: how this year's collection of new defensive-minded head coaches will fare in their first years on the job for their respective teams. Kicking off the conversation, they chat about how Dan Quinn will do at the helm of the Washington Commanders, despite him seemingly not being their first option during the hiring cycle. They also talk about whether Antonio Pierce's success as the interim head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders was largely because of the competition his squad faced and if Jerod Mayo will be able to duplicate Bill Belichick's success with the New England Patriots defense. The guys close out the show giving their thoughts on the beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, the importance of the “The Pop Out - Ken & Friends” concert and why this feud brought back memories of the old days of rap.(1:11) - Carolina Panthers stadium renovations(7:04) - Is Dan Quinn in over his head in Washington?(14:59) - Can Raheem Morris bring the Falcons back to relevancy?(22:13) - Is Jerrod Mayo set-up for success?(24:14) - Antonio Piece no-longer Las Vegas' interim head coach(29:52) - Mike Macdonald's challenge in Seattle(38:00) - Kendrick Lamar and Drake beefZero Blitz would be nothing without the impact of our beloved Terez Paylor, who was a pillar of Yahoo Sports' NFL editorial and podcast coverage. The duo start off with the news that Zach Wilson has been traded to the Denver Broncos. Both agree this doesn't mean a lot for anyone except Ben DiNucci, but Charles asks if the New York Jets should consider drafting Aaron Rodgers' replacement at tenth overall (or later in the draft). There are 4-5 first round picks at quarterback this year, and Derrik has charted all of them. Charles thinks the ideal landing spot for Drake Maye is the Minnesota Vikings, and that Denver trading up is irresponsible. Charles and Tony start things off with some funny storylines from the weekend, including Zach Wilson's reluctance to start again for the New York Jets and the Philadelphia Eagles head of security getting himself and Dre Greenlaw ejected from Sunday's game.Next, the duo dive into the field of contenders for MVP in an especially weird year. While Brock Purdy is the odds-on favorite currently, neither agree he truly deserves the award (and neither does Jalen Hurts). Both agree Tyreek Hill is the most deserving, but can a non-quarterback win the MVP in 2023? Charles also believes Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen is the most deserving of the Coach of the Year award currently.Later, Charles and Tony take a look at the AFC playoff race and decide who they have more trust in between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Kansas City Chiefs coming off bad losses, and who they'd be more scared to face in the playoffs between the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins.1:15 - Zach Wilson reluctant to start for the New York Jets again?12:10 - "Big Dom" gets himself and Dre Greenlaw ejected19:05 - Who's the true MVP of the NFL?48:10 - Shane Steichen for Coach of the Year52:10 - AFC playoff race talkZero Blitz would be nothing without the impact of our beloved Terez Paylor, who was a pillar of Yahoo Sports' NFL editorial and podcast coverage. The duo start by recapping Week 2, including David Bakhtiari's war against turf, the NFC North's early struggles, the wildest game of the week (New York Giants beating the Arizona Cardinals), Zach Wilson and Josh Allen being put on a leash (with differing results) and Nick Chubb's disastrous knee injury. Next, they evaluate Jordan Love, Desmond Ridder, Sam Howell, Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson to determine who inspires the most confidence through two weeks of football.4:10 - Green Bay Packers LT David Bakhtiari is apparently refusing to play football on turf fields. Is there any offensive lineman in history who could sit out to protest turf fields and actually make a difference?12:25 - The NFC North has disappointed so far. The Packers have looked okay, but the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears appear to be heading in the wrong direction.20:40 - The Giants' huge comeback victory over the Cardinals on Sunday was one of the wildest games we've seen. It may not be enough to restore our faith in the Giants, however, as both their offense and defense have changed a lot from last year and don't appear to have clicked yet.26:25 - After Week 1's crazy Monday matchup between the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets, Josh Allen and Zach Wilson both appeared to be put on a leash in Week 2. Allen thrived in the limited offense, while Wilson struggled mightily, especially at the end of the game.32:20 - Nick Chubb's catastrophic knee injury: what does it mean for him and the Cleveland Browns offense that's built around him?39:00 - Evaluating first-year starting quarterbacks: Jordan Love looks great. He has developed well and has the talent to make any throw necessary.42:10 - Desmond Ridder looked very limited in Week 1, but he was cut loose in Week 2 and looked much better. His abilities on third down and in the red zone are a big reason the Atlanta Falcons are 2-0.48:20 - Sam Howell has impressed thus far, and while his lowlights have been very low, his highlights show that he has NFL starter arm talent. 50:50 - Shorter quarterbacks can succeed in the NFL, but Bryce Young's size has been an issue so far. He looks like he's struggling to find open lanes in the middle of the field, and collapsing pockets swallow him up quickly. He looks overwhelmed.55:30 - C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson have both impressed early. Klassen is particularly high on Stroud, whose processing and playmaking in and out of the pocket have been better than advertised.Zero Blitz would be nothing without the impact of our beloved Terez Paylor, who was a pillar of Yahoo Sports' NFL editorial and podcast coverage. Later, Charles and Justis give more analysis from NFL Week 1, including the teams they have the least faith in going forward, and cap off the show with analysis about the Green Bay Packers' impressive performance against the Bears and what it means for their season.2:50 - AI has made its way to the NFL and we're not sure how to feel about it. The Dallas Cowboys introduced a very creepy Jerry Jones AI portrait, while the Los Angeles Chargers had AI robots roaming the stadium on Sunday to promote a movie. Charles is creeped out.7:40 - Disaster struck the Jets on Monday night, as Aaron Rodgers is out for the season with an Achilles injury. Charles was at the game and describes one of the most drastic shifts in energy he's ever experienced in the crowd. The duo discuss where the Jets go from here, where the Jets went wrong this offseason and a concerning performance for the Bills' Josh Allen.30:00 - Charles and Justis dive into more takeaways from Week 1, including the apparent lack of development from the Chicago Bears and the Atlanta Falcons' refusal to use their most talented players. They each decide on a team they have the least faith in going forward.42:25 - Justis covers the Packers, and he was excited about QB Jordan Love's performance in Week 1. A discussion about the Packers win over the Bears ensues, and what Green Bay should expect in a matchup against the Falcons this Sunday.Zero Blitz would be nothing without the impact of our beloved Terez Paylor, who was a pillar of Yahoo Sports' NFL editorial and podcast coverage.
