In this episode of Reboot IT, host Dave Coriale, President of DelCor, sits down with David Stephenson, SVP of Technology at Entrepreneurs' Organization, to unpack what true collaboration really means in associations and nonprofits. Together, they explore the difference between transactional vendor relationships and deep strategic partnerships, how to build psychological safety within project teams, and why honest dialogue is essential for successful outcomes. David also shares practical tactics for selecting partners, navigating conflict, and reducing organizational risk through collaborative practices.Themes and Topics:What Collaboration Really Is (and Isn't)Collaboration isn't about being nice or making sure “everyone's at the table.” It's about having the right mix of people with different perspectives. When everyone thinks the same and has the same motivations, you end up with polite agreement, not real progress. There's a big difference between just enlarging a meeting and actually collaborating with intention.Getting the Right Mix: Staff, Members, Vendors, and PartnersAssociations juggle vendors, partners, staff, and members, each with different levels of involvement and motivation.David distinguishes between people who are in the weeds with you (like design and development partners) and those who play a key but more behind‑the‑scenes role (like hosting providers).Upfront, he works to get everyone on the same page: What problem are we solving? What role do you play? What's your motive (and recognizing that everyone has one, and that's okay)?Vendors vs. Partners: Building the Right Kind of RelationshipIn his head, David does see a spectrum: some are more transactional services (SaaS products, integration tools), while others are strategic partners who need to understand mission, business objectives, and strategy. He tries not to use the word vendor in conversation and instead works to make everyone feel like a partner, even if their role is more narrow. When negotiating, he looks for a fair outcome on both sides — if a partner walks away with “really thin margins,” you end up with constant “change order” moments and a strained dynamic from day one.Honest Dialogue, Healthy Friction, and Psychological SafetyDavid values partners who can say things like “That's just not possible,” or “That doesn't align with the strategy you described,” instead of always saying yes.He expects and welcomes friction and hard conversations around timelines, costs, and expectations. If there's zero friction, something's probably off.Psychological safety is key: people need to feel they can disagree, say “I don't think this is working,” or ask tough questions without fearing for their job, contract, or relationship.Doing the Work: Projects, Postmortems, and “Disagree but Commit”David admits he hasn't “cracked the code” on postmortems, but he knows they only work if people feel safe enough to speak up during the project, not just after. When collaboration is done well, it may feel slow at the beginning, but it ultimately makes the work go faster and smoother than siloed, go-it-alone approaches. He likes setting expectations from the start: speak up when it's “cheap to disagree,” and embrace the idea of “disagree, but commit” so the team can move forward with one voice.Collaboration as Risk Reduction for the FutureDavid sees collaboration as a way to de‑risk his future; the stronger his network and partnerships, the better prepared he is for what's coming.Staying insular and only looking inside your own team or organization raises your risk, especially in fast-changing areas like technology and AI.By collaborating widely and intentionally, associati

Matt and Oren are pulling together their year-end recap posts for social media. And they realize, “wow, there's a lot to reflect upon!”LA is definitely enjoying a resurgence, of sorts. And while more productions are shooting in LA, a lot has changed over the past few years. And everything isn't rosy.So if you're wondering what's the right type of year-end social media recap, or what you should post that will win over the right people, then you won't want to miss this episode!Matt and Oren have some diverging opinions Like what you ask? Well…sure, it's cool to show your working and always on set. But if you only celebrate your own wins, are you being tone-deaf to the struggle it takes to get those opportunities? And what are some ways to make it more human?Matt and Oren look at it this way. You have to post something intriguing so people who can hire you have you top of mind when the right gig comes. But what should you focus on? Tagging people? The best of your best? Family? Something else? Finally, with the industry in its December-January slow-period, Matt's been thinking about setting goals and starting new habits.

Britain's leading forensic pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd has performed over 23,000 postmortems and given evidence in some of the most high-profile cases of our time, from Hungerford to Hillsborough, from Princess Diana to David Kelly. But his fascination with death began much earlier, when his mother died suddenly from heart disease and he was left with questions no one could answer. In this episode of Full Disclosure, Dr Shepherd tells James O'Brien how that childhood loss set him on the path to forensic medicine, how his father's emotional openness shaped him, and how a book brought into school by a friend gave him his first glimpse of a profession that would define his life. He reflects on the leap from observing to performing autopsies, the responsibility of telling the truth in court, and the lasting emotional toll of cases that never leave you.Candid, unflinching and deeply human, Dr Shepherd shares how a lifetime spent uncovering the truth about death has shaped the way he lives.Find out more about Dr Richard Shepherd Time of Death tour here

Send us a textRobert's journey from IT help desk technician to systems manager and project management instructor reveals how unexpected career paths often yield the most valuable insights. When tasked with teaching experienced construction project managers to abandon paper for digital systems, he discovered his true calling: bridging knowledge gaps to help people work more efficiently with technology. "The systems we have exist to make our lives easier," Robert explains, "but there are humans involved who have to use them to do their jobs." This human-centered approach infuses Robert's three courses created for the PURE Project Manager Credential program. Robert's Project Hacks course integrates real-world experience with theoretical knowledge, imparting practical adjustments that enhance project outcomes without compromising on quality. The Lessons Learned and Postmortems course challenges conventional wisdom by advocating for continuous learning throughout projects rather than just at completion. Perhaps most surprisingly, his Self-Care for Project Managers course addresses an often-overlooked aspect of the profession—how meditation, exercise, and simple daily practices can help manage the mental "churn" that accompanies project challenges. What makes Robert's perspective particularly valuable is how he connects these seemingly separate topics into a cohesive approach. The skills to document processes clearly, the wisdom to learn continuously, and the self-awareness to maintain personal wellbeing create a powerful toolkit for today's project managers. Drawing parallels to his martial arts training, Robert demonstrates how teaching others effectively requires both mastery of techniques and understanding of human learning patterns. Whether you're an experienced project manager looking to refine your approach or new to the field and seeking practical guidance, this episode offers insights that extend beyond theoretical frameworks into real-world application. Let's look at the spreads for Wild Card Weekend. Al is rooting against the Bills now because Josh Allen took one snap in order to keep his starting streak alive. We talked about the MVP race between Allen and Lamar Jackson. Nobody in the NFL has ever had a season like Lamar had this year. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the sounds of the Jets beating the Dolphins as Rodgers threw his 500th TD. Rodgers was asked about retiring and talked about his time here. Woody Johnson talked about this terrible season but was excited to get a win in the last game of the year. Mike McDaniel explained why Tyreek Hill wasn't available. Sounds like he took himself out of the game. Brian Daboll talked about the season and his plans to talk to the front office after the season. We heard from a fired up Dan Campbell after the Lions beat the Vikings. Todd Bowles talked about the season the Bucs had as they head into the playoffs. Jerry Jones continues to say nice things about Mike McCarthy. Bo Nix had a strong performance as the Broncos dominated the second string Chiefs. In the final segment of the hour, the Jets cannot hire another first time head coach like they have in the past. There is something different about the Jets. It will not ever work. You need an experienced head coach. Rex Ryan is interviewing with them tomorrow.
On today's show, Alex and Calvin continue their series on Discourse and Manipulation by examining the role of manipulative silence in various post-mortems to the 2024 Presidential Election. As a second-term President Donald Trump looms, many have been debating: what went wrong in the Democrats' campaign? What policy positions, rhetorical strategies and slip-ups, or other contextual factors led Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to be so soundly defeated? However, amidst all of the post-mortem analysis by institutional Democrats and their surrogates in the media, some salient concerns seem to be missing: namely, the various causes and effects of economic and political precarity that many communities in the US are actively experiencing, and the Democrats' seeming unwillingness to address these issues head-on. Instead, many are using this epideictic moment to blame scores of abstract, ill-defined terms for the election loss: “wokeness,” “inflation,” “misogyny,” “political headwinds,” and “anti-incumbent sentiment,” among others. When we apply a Critical Discourse Studies lens, we can see that all of these concepts share a common grammatical category: each one is a nominalization, or a noun that has been made out of a verb or adjective. These nominalizations serve the useful purpose of obscuring or silencing important information, such as who is responsible for an action (or who/what is being affected by it), as well as the scale of the issue. In this episode, we examine a series of texts that use manipulative nominalizations and other discourse structures to erase the specific ways that Democratic leaders, campaign staff, and consultancy firms have acted ineffectively and destructively both in this failed run and in the recent past (e.g. Biden's and Obama's presidencies and Clinton's losing bid in 2016). Instead of taking real stock of this history, these texts are mainly platforms for powerful actors to attack broad, abstract concepts, or worse, to victim-blame the voters themselves. We conclude by reflecting upon how these manipulative silences betray the Democratic establishment's inability or unwillingness to reckon with how its own economic and material interests might be at odds with policies and platforms that could help uplift the most vulnerable in our society.Texts Analyzed in this Episode:Maureen Dowd - “Democrats and the Case of Mistaken Identity Politics”National Organization for Women President Christian F. We also cover frameworks for identifying feeling-based goals, building habits & accountability within your personal life, combating negative self-talk, and rewiring your brain to focus on the present & not dwell on past failures.ABOUT CHRIS CRAVENSChris Cravens is an industry veteran with a quarter century of successes delivering measurable value for high-growth enterprises in San Francisco and Silicon Valley. An avid change agent and catalyst for transformation, Mr. Cravens has led major global scale-up and transformation efforts for Software Engineering, Information Technology, Security, Facilities teams. As the first CIO at Zynga and Uber, he led critical functions that enabled scale from small startups to major global enterprises in record time. Mr. Cravens led digital transformation at Splunk, scaling revenue from $800M to $2.2BN in three years by reimagining and supercharging Go to Market capabilities with automation and high value software capabilities that drove greater deal size and velocity. Currently, Mr. Cravens provides expert consulting supporting Private Equity and Venture transactions and transformations and is an active Strategic Advisor, Coach, and Investor to startups delivering innovative, disruptive technologies to accelerate digital transformation.“I would just keep doing things like that because of that philosophy of in the absence of clear leadership, step in, be the one who is responsible and it goes back to that anxiety from childhood. There are people who have much healthier outlooks, and I've just never been wired that way. So I have to kind of question each decision I make as I go to do a new thing or take on more stuff. 'Is this the right thing for me to do right now, or am I making my life harder?'”- Chris Cravens We now have 10 local communities of engineering leaders hosting in-person meetups all over the world!Local communities are led by eng leaders just like you, who wanted to create a place to connect, share insights & tackle critical challenges in the job.New York City, Boston, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, London, Amsterdam, and Toronto in-person events are happening now! We're launching local events all the time - get involved at elc.community!SHOW NOTES:Chris's experience of his first week @ Uber (2:02)Borrowing professional life tools & using them in your personal life (4:53)Why it's easy to give 90% of time to work & only 10% to your personal life (8:26)How Chris navigated his own transition (14:34)Treat a sabbatical like a job (16:15)Adding OKRs to your personal life (19:36)Strategies for assessing feeling-oriented goals (22:05)Combating negative self-talk & treating yourself like you would a good friend (24:58)How Chris's frameworks have shifted over time when setting personal life goals (27:11)Reflection questions to help illuminate where to center your focus (29:35)Applying positive self-talk within a work context to your personal life (32:39)Incorporate blameless postmortems into a personal context (35:38)Strategies for better habit formation (37:00)How to overcome feeling a lack of motivation to start a new habit (38:08)The significance of having both clarity & accountability (40:56)Tips for rewiring the belief that you can accomplish a goal (45:27)Rapid fire questions (48:21)LINKS AND RESOURCESChris's Guide to Thinking ErrorsThe Satanic Verses - novel of Indian-born British writer Salman Rushdie led Ruholla Khomeini, the ayatollah of Iran, to demand his execution and then forced him into hiding. This episode wouldn't have been possible without the help of our incredible production team:Patrick Gallagher - Producer & Co-HostJerry Li - Co-HostNoah Olberding - Associate Producer, Audio & Video Editor https://www.linkedin.com/in/noah-olberding/Dan Overheim - Audio Engineer, Dan's also an avid 3D printer - https://www.bnd3d.com/Ellie Coggins Angus - Copywriter, Check out her other work at https://elliecoggins.com/about/
