Show Notes Episode 484: Thank You For Smoking This week Host Dave Bledsoe had a protracted coughing fit he blamed on “the damn cat” and not the decades of cigarettes he continues to consume. (Not the cat's fault) On the show this week we look at the nicotine tinted world that existed before we all had to go outside to smoke. Along the way we discover that Dave is willing to blame anyone but himself for his addictions before moving right along to the topic of how the cigarette became the coffin nail of choice for millions of Americans. (It was all very American, war and advertising.) Then we learn from first hand sources (It's Dave so he is probably making it up) what the world was like behind the haze of all that smoke. From the backseat of your Mom's car to coach class of an international flight, people had them and they smoked them. (Is there a nostalgic longing for smoking inside a bar? Yes.) We close out with how the world is actually better now that smokers have to go outside. (Even for the smokers!) Our Sponsor this week is Real Cigarettes, if you want nicotine why not try a real cigarette? We open the show with the Merchants of Death and close with Liel Bar Z who has a smoking problem. In this episode, we're joined by Jessica Sowards of Roots and Refuge. This is a must-listen episode. There is something for EVERYONE in this and so much gospel truth and encouragement. We talked about big dreaming with your spouse, and what it's like having a platform as a Christian. We talked about surrender and God's plans always being superior to ours. And THEN, we talked about gardening, being able to independently feed your family, GMO seeds, the “horrible” carbon emissions of the home gardener, and how to save seeds. We can't describe in these show notes how valuable and life-giving this conversation was. You'll have to listen and see for yourself! O come, let us sing unto the Lord; *let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving *and show ourselves glad in him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God *and a great King above all gods.In his hand are all the depths of the earth, *and the heights of the hills are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, *and his hands prepared the dry land.O come, let us worship and fall down, *and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is our God, *and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy: O come, let us adore him. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Prayer of IntercessionShow us your mercy, O Lord; And grant us your salvation. Clothe your ministers with righteousness; Let your people sing with joy. Give peace, O Lord, in all the world; For only in you can we live in safety. Lord, keep this nation under your care; and guide us in the way of justice and truth. Let your way be known upon the earth; Your saving health among all nations. Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten; Nor the hope of the poor be taken away. Create in us clean hearts, O God; and Sustain us with your Holy Spirit. Amen.Take a moment of silence at this time to reflect and pray for others. The CollectsLent Week 1Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations, and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.A Collect for PeaceO God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries, through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.A Collect for GraceO Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, you have brought us safely to the beginning of this day: Defend us by your mighty power, that we may not fall into sin nor run into any danger; and that, guided by your Spirit, we may do what is righteous in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. In Times of Social Conflict or Unrest (#44, BCP 2019)Increase, O God, the spirit of neighborliness among us, that in peril we may uphold one another, in suffering tend to one another, and in homelessness, loneliness, or exile befriend one another. Grant us brave and enduring hearts that we may strengthen one another, until the disciplines and testing of these days are ended, and you again give peace in our time; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Amen.A Prayer of St. John ChrysostomAlmighty God, you have given us grace at this time, with one accord to make our common supplications to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will grant their requests: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Tom and Andy discuss the misery of losing the opener against Indiana in dysfunctional fashion. They work their way through all the glaring issues that they saw as Indiana burst Penn State's chance at an undefeated season. By the end of their Indiana review, they point out the silver linings that they gleaned from the loss as we look ahead to next week's Mount Everest opponent, Ohio State. An Ohio State team that looks every bit the title contender that we all thought they were.
