Why are women's reports of pain so often dismissed? As it turns out, it's not just oversight—it's a failure of trust. In this case study mini-episode, we're looking at distrust in real-time—examining how bias in medicine isn't just about misunderstanding symptoms, but about who gets believed and who doesn't. Building on our full episode on Trust and our mini-episode on Hatred, Laine dives into research from Harvard Health and neuroscience studies to uncover the real cost of medical distrust—especially for women and women of color. If you have any topic suggestions for future episodes, don't hesitate to reach out! What shifts in podcasting have you noticed in the last few months? In the first episode of 2025, Mary dives right into the changes we've seen in podcasting just since last fall. More and more hosts are leaning into partisan politics and using their shows to share their thoughts and concerns with a huge audience. This has further legitimized the industry, similar to when celebrities started to don the mantle of podcast host several years back. This mainstream growth has a real impact on your show, even if you aren't interviewing Canada's Prime Minister or the Democratic presidential candidate. Mary explores how you, as a podcast creator, can seize this opportunity to transform or elevate your show—ultimately your own media platform—to refresh stagnant formulas and revisit the most essential question: how does your podcast align with your values? Whether you're brand new or years into podcasting, let's think about: How podcasting becoming more mainstream affects you and your show How you can lean into the shifts to bring a fresh perspective Why you should use your podcast to control the message you want to spread Links worth mentioning from the episode: Find Podcast Success While Doing Less, Episode 87: https://www.organizedsound.ca/find-podcast-success-while-doing-less-episode-87/ Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on facing impostor syndrome and taking criticism, Rethinking with Adam Grant: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/canadian-prime-minister-justin-trudeau-on-facing-impostor/id1554567118?i=1000658497013 Gratitude enhances health, brings happiness — and may even lengthen lives, Harvard Health: https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/gratitude-enhances-health-brings-happiness-and-may-even-lengthen-lives-202409113071 Connect with Mary! Transcript with Audio Description: [MUSIC IN - GHOSTHOOD FEATURING SARA AZRIEL “LET'S GO” BEGINS] MARY: Although it's February, and this is my first episode back from my year end break. Welcome back. It feels like a lifetime ago because so much has changed in this short little bit of time from my last episode that I published in early December. It's amazing what a few months can do for you. And toward the end of last year, too, in episode 87, called Find Podcast Success While Doing Less, that episode is a good one to listen to before this one, because it's kind of a continuation or maybe like a little addendum to that episode. Where are you on your podcasting journey to make your podcast more integrated with what you do and your values, especially in today's world when, yeah, we're still trying to figure out what to do with less time, less money, less capacity, all of that sort of stuff. So if you haven't listened to episode 87 yet, make sure you go find that one and then continue on to this one. Because, yeah, the world has changed. It doesn't matter which part of the world you live in. And I usually don't get very political. This podcast isn't political at all. And I don't slide into that realm. But I feel like with everything that I do, whether that is my personal life, my podcasting life, my business life, everything is all intertwined. So what does that political landscape actually mean for podcasting as a whole? And then more specifically, what does it mean for your show? A few things, actually. So listen in. This is episode number 90 of the Podcaster's Guide to a Visible Voice. > [MUSIC ENDS]

This is the second part of a look at some of the mental health treatment options in 2024. There have been changes since the creation of the podcast in 2015. For example, in 2015 there were limited telehealth options, no entrepreneurial mental health apps and service providers. No A.I enhanced apps. And mental health services was primarily provided face to face or in a group setting. There have been changes in technology and access to care. For my overseas listeners, I'm sorry but this one is going to be U.S. centric. There are cultural, governmental and way too many differences in access to treatment. Please continue to listen and glean from it what you can. Before I get to that, it helps if you know the terms, vocabulary and some of the science based options for your anxiety. One of the resources that is accessible is located at the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health - Booklets and Fact Sheets. Consider this a starting point in your treatment, so that you have a understanding of what is going on and some, but not all of your treatment options. If you need support contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-8255, the Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386 or text “START” to 741-741. Resources Mentioned: U.S. National Institute of Mental Health - Booklets and Fact Sheets The documents can be viewed on the website or downloaded as a PDF. There are also Spanish language versions. Mental Health America page on Screening Tools for Anxiety Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors. This therapy is suggested for people that have anxiety, some forms of depression. In the Anxiety Disorders booklet, there is a section on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. There is a much longer definition I found at the U.S. National Library of Medicine. If you prefer your information in an audio format, the National Association of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapists has a self-help section that has recordings about various CBT topics, including dealing with anxiety. https://www.nacbt.org/cbt-self-help-audio-programs/ Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) therapy the focus is that it routes you into the present tense, along with providing skills to handle problems. There is a lot of treatment definitions on the Psychology Today website: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Introduction to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Equine Assisted Therapy Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is for folks that need help in regulating emotions, developing mindfulness skills and help with challenging situations. Harvard Health has a page about DBT. And Everyday Health has an extensive guide about DBT, Disclaimer: Links to other sites are provided for information purposes only and do not constitute endorsements. "Neurodiversity describes the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways; there is no one "right" way of thinking, learning, and behaving, and differences are not viewed as deficits. The word neurodiversity refers to the diversity of all people, but it is often used in the context of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as other neurological or developmental conditions such as ADHD or learning disabilities. The neurodiversity movement emerged during the 1990s, aiming to increase acceptance and inclusion of all people while embracing neurological differences. Through online platforms, more and more autistic people were able to connect and form a self-advocacy movement. At the same time, Judy Singer, an Australian sociologist, coined the term neurodiversity to promote equality and inclusion of "neurological minorities." While it is primarily a social justice movement, neurodiversity research and education is increasingly important in how clinicians view and address certain disabilities and neurological conditions." _ What is neurodiversity? - Harvard Health. “I am also called to do jury duty, be a television presenter, awards show host, creative executive, game show host, show/program creator, news director, show runner, executive producer, talk show host, and radio personality.” -Antonio Myers. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Microdosing psychedelics (i.e. taking a fraction of a dose of psilocybin or LSD) is gaining popularity as an alternative medicine for depression, anxiety, and ADHD. What are the benefits? Does it really work? And is it safe in the long term? Dr. Peter Grinspoon, a primary care physician and educator at Massachusetts General Hospital, shares his insight on some of the scientific studies about microdosing. We discuss the power of the placebo effect, the philosophy of ego annihilation, and the differences between microdosing and macro dosing. Finally, he gives some guidance on how to microdose safely if you choose to engage in this practice. Happy Thanksgiving! It's that time of year when we joke about how much food we'll eat and we scour websites for special Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. We also manage to throw in a bit of "thanks" too. The truth is, we ought to focus on gratitude all yearlong because it is a practice that is good for our health and wellbeing. In this week's episode I share research around the benefits of gratitude, ways that you can incorporate it into your life, and some of the reasons I've been grateful over the past year. Read more about the benefits of gratitude in this article from the Mayo Clinic and from Harvard Health. I appreciate you from the bottom of my heart and the bottom of my wine glass.

Ever feel like your brain is doing a marathon, making decisions left and right, leaving you drained by the end of the day? Well, fear not, because I've got something that might just save you from that mental marathon – the Brain Power Protocol, specifically focusing on open and closed loops. So, what's the deal with these loops, and how can they turbocharge your brain's performance? I stumbled upon this game-changer through my podcast interview with my friend Kriss Berg. He dropped knowledge bombs on open and closed loops, revealing a brain-saving protocol. Now, let me get a bit nerdy here – our brains have a finite capacity for successful decision-making in a day. The prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, the decision-making powerhouses, can only handle so much. Enter the Brain Power Protocol.Picture this: you're firing off emails, texts, and calls in the afternoon, creating open loops that demand your attention later on. Been there, done that. But what if I told you there's a simple protocol to optimize your decision-making and eliminate that brain strain? Open loops in the AM, close them by the PM. It's a game-changer, saving you time and preserving precious decision-making brainpower. Beyond the Brain Power Protocol, here are 12 ways straight from Harvard Health to keep your brain in tiptop shape:Get mental stimulation: Neurogenesis is key.Exercise regularly: Boost your mood and brain health.Maintain a healthy diet: Think Mediterranean.Manage blood pressure: Stay lean, exercise, reduce stress.Control blood sugar: Combat diabetes.Improve cholesterol: Diet, exercise, weight control.Consider low-dose aspirin: Consult your doctor.Say no to tobacco: It's not brain-friendly.Moderate alcohol use: Practice discernment.Care for your emotions: Guard your mental well-being.Protect your head: Minimize concussion risks.Build social networks: Connect with your community.By adopting a few of these habits alongside the Brain Power Protocol, you're not just optimizing your brain; you're investing in a happier, healthier you. Have you ever used a weighted blanket? What was your experience? Did you feel like a human in a “thundershirt”? In today's SECOND COURSE, we delve into the data behind weighted blankets, and how they may help improve anxiety and sleep. We cover studies related weighted blankets during cancer treatment, inpatient psychiatric care, and for improving sleep in people with co-occurring mental health issues (like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and ADHD). Weighted blankets already have been studied extensively as a sensory tool for folks with autism spectrum disorder, and perhaps they can work for you too! Thomas Hübl, PhD, is a renowned teacher, author, and international facilitator who works within the complexity of systems and cultural change by integrating the core insights of the great wisdom traditions and mysticism with the discoveries of science. Since 2004, he has taught and facilitated programs with more than 100,000 people worldwide, including online courses which he began offering in 2013. He is the author of Attuned: Practicing Interdependence to Heal Our Trauma—and Our World (2023) and Healing Collective Trauma: A Process for Integrating Our Intergenerational and Cultural Wounds (2020), which was featured in Oprah Daily as one of “10 Books to Help with Old, Painful Traumas”. He has published articles in Harvard Health and the Journal of Awareness-Based Systems Change. Hübl has served as an advisor and guest faculty for organizations and universities and is currently a visiting scholar at the Wyss Institute at Harvard University. As a coach and trainer, he supports CEOs and leaders in their personal and professional development and in becoming trauma informed. He has presented talks and taught workshops on resilience, collective healing, and relational competencies for healing trauma at Harvard Medical School since 2019. Born in Austria, Hübl studied medicine at the University of Vienna and worked as a paramedic for nine years. He left his studies at the University in the 1990s to begin a new life path focused on teaching meditation and mindfulness-based awareness practices. He began holding retreats in Austria and Germany in the early 2000s and noticed that many participants began to voice some of their deeply held intergenerational wounds stemming from the second World War. As these programs evolved over the next two decades, he developed the Collective Trauma Integration Process for working with individual, ancestral, and collective trauma. This model promotes a safe exploration of sharing and reflection, guided by a facilitation process that supports radical openness, transparent communication, mindful awareness, and refined relational competencies. Hübl has led large-scale events that have brought together thousands of Germans and Israelis to acknowledge, face, and heal the cultural shadow left by the Holocaust. Over the past ten years, his intensive training programs have addressed the persistent challenges of our time – climate anxiety, racism, gender violence, and political polarization, among others – through the lens of individual, ancestral, and collective trauma. The interdisciplinary nature of Hübl's work has been shared with and practiced by organizations and working groups of physicians, psychologists, and therapists. Since 2019, Hübl has hosted an annual Collective Trauma Summit which has brought together hundreds of prominent speakers and draws hundreds of thousands of attendees from around the world. In 2017, Hübl and his wife, Israeli artist Yehudit Sasportas, founded The Pocket Project, an NGO dedicated to addressing and integrating collective trauma throughout the world. Trauma-informed leadership, post-genocide reform, and a practice called “global social witnessing” are key areas of focus and activity. Do you know what is the number one category of food that has the highest caloric intake? Breads, pastries, buns, bagels, muffins, granola cereals, all of that stuff. There are tons of podcasts, blog posts, and books about how to get more focused. Focus is seen as the key to greater productivity and success. While focus is important, my guest says there are also amazing powers to be found in something that gets a lot less attention: the unfocused mind.Dr. Srini Pillay is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist, a brain-imaging researcher, and the author of Tinker Dabble Doodle Try: Unlock the Power of the Unfocused Mind. Today on the show, Srini explains the downsides of excessive focus, the importance of tapping into the unfocused mind, especially in the age of A.I., and the benefits of doing so, including how mind wandering can help you be more productive and creative, allow you to see greater possibilities for your life, and offer important insights that will get you unstuck from problems. He shares strategies to incorporate unfocused time into your lifestyle, including how to make daydreaming more beneficial and why you should let yourself doodle without guilt. Srini also makes a case for multitasking in the sense of switching back and forth between different tasks.Connect With Srini PillaySrini's websiteNeuro Business Group websiteSrini on LinkedInSrini on XSrini on IGSrini's articles on Harvard Health
In 2021, Harvard Health did a giant gratitude study and found that couple who show gratitude for their partner, and who express that gratitude regularly, are more satisfied with their relationship. University of California Berkeley's research team referred to gratitude as the quiet difference maker in relationship formation. The journal of social and personal relationships reported that individuals who feel appreciated by their partners have better-functioning relationships that are less likely to be impacted by ineffective arguing and even financial stress. All that to say, a little gratitude goes a long way. In this episode, I talk to Dante Jones, (one half of the duo THEY) all about gratitude. Thanks to the sponsors of this episode. Your attitude is everything on the golf course (and in life). So many players have a bad attitude on the links and wonder why they don't score like they want. To play better golf and set yourself up for a better mental game, change your attitude to gratitude. Being grateful is something you control and can have a massive impact on your game. Here's what Harvard Health said about the power of gratitude: “In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.” Gratitude equals happiness. If you're happier on the golf course, you won't get as frustrated or emotional, enjoy good shots more, feel better during and after the round, have the mental strength to deal with bad shots, and create better relationships. This comes from simply being grateful. While there are a ton of chocolate bunnies lining up on the runway this week there were also a bunch of chocolate stories in the news. Like is chocolate good for you? The FDA said KINDA. Kinda? You can decide for yourself how many bunnies you'll eat this week after you read the story from NPR, "Is chocolate good for your heart? Finally the FDA has an answer - kind of" Also in chocolate news this week was a this story from Harvard Health, "Heavy metals found in popular brands of dark chocolate. ". Wasn't dark chocolate supposed to be good for your heart? But there was one great happy and healthy chocolate story this week and it involves my really great friend Chef Steve Amaral and his partner Ann Corley of The North Fork Chocolate Company with 2 new locations in Mattituck and Riverhead Long Island. They are awesome people and make really healthy and delicious chocolate from scratch. Yes by hand one by one. You can even go there and see how they make the chocolate in person. They welcome you. The North Fork Chocolate Company is committed to using local ingredients to enhance everything they make. They've been making some of the best chocolate bunnies anywhere and more choclate treats for weeks now. News 12 Long Island thought theirs was a worthy story too. When I caught the News 12 story,I invited Alanah Ivans, North Forks Chocolate Company's 'Chief Chocolatier' to join me to give them all a big chocolate shout out. When my pal Steve Amaral told me back in 2012 after being a top chef in the Hamptons with a top catering company - that he was gonna make chocolate - I thought he was nuts. Now I'm so proud of him and his team. Stop by and say hello if youre out that way in Long Island. Feel free to mention his buddy Debbie Nigro sent you. He'll smile. You can also order choclate online for any occasion. Check out The North Fork Chcolate Company they're unique.

Marcel Schwantes and guest, Heather Hanson Wickman, are aligned on their messages of how practical love works to serve people well and help organizations to thrive and profit. They expand on the principles of “love in action” through the guest's compelling 2018 book, The Evolved Executive, whose sub-title inspired the creation of the Love in Action podcast. Show-Notes:Optimism Vs. Pessimism; Is there room for both?So often leaders and individuals feel the only way to present feelings is in the form of optimism. But are they honoring their real, true feelings? Cohost Robb Holman, references the Harvard Health article, An Outlook Better Than Optimism?, and discusses the importance of being aware of your feelings and mindset especially when grief or pessimistic associated feelings are necessary. “We need to acknowledge and embrace how we really feel and in the midst of that there is beauty, there's intimacy, power.” [5:18]SufferingHeather shares the very real and painful elements of her own suffering, and the point in which the tension became too much, something had to give. Marcel points out that many people believe since the pandemic suffering has decreased with an increased level of equity and awareness. And while the work landscape has changed and shifted, Heather believes the suffering has not decreased but rather changed and presented in different ways. “Care, Candor, Connection, and Change…I don't think these have really shifted based on the pandemic, if anything when we think about connection maybe we're even at a place that's worse.” [28:18]The Evolved ExecutiveThe title of Heather Hanson Wickman's book is The Evolved Executive but who is the Evolved Executive? “An Evolved Executive is the individual that really draws into the idea of servant leadership, that we are here are as stewards of the people that are working for us and the organization that we're a part of” [30:00] Heather defines this person with this scientific definition but also an as she says “artistic definition”, in which there is the idea where the individual as a deep drive to continue to look inward and constantly change and be better.Operating from love NOT fear“Fear is really allusive in terms of the ways in which it shows up at work… the hoarding of information, the secrecy, the gossip… those are the things that get in the way of us stepping into the space of love”[32:04] Heather's top signs of fear in the workplace are Gossip, Secrecy, Not Speaking the Truth, and ‘Yes Boss'. Most of the time people aren't even aware they are doing these things, these are just the way they've been taught. Moving to a space of love starts with a place of deep self-awareness as a leader in how you are creating or allowing fear in the workplace. Deeper Level of ConsciousnessDeeper Consciousness, it's not metaphysical mumbo-jumbo. Heather explains that as someone (like an ‘Evolved Executive') who is evolving, raising their awareness, and constantly looking at how they are serving others will naturally expand into their consciousness.“We are all mirroring and magnifying different parts of who we are…as we raise our awareness we begin to see differently.” [44:31]Mentioned in this episode:Robb HolmanAn outlook better than optimism? - Harvard HealthUntetheredHeather Hanson Wickman on LinkedInhello@beuntethered.com

It's the season of giving and I've been thinking a lot about thankfulness.Gratitude, what we're personally grateful for, is different for each of us — because we each have our own life experiences, our own lens on how we see our world, both macro and micro. But why is expressing our gratitude daily so important or helpful?According to Harvard Health, giving thanks can make you happier. That in “positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.”Perhaps you've heard that saying: “What you appreciate, appreciates.”Or, where your attention goes, energy flows. So, it makes sense as to why focusing on the things we're grateful for is powerful.I'm often curious what fills a person with appreciation – because within that I find inspiration. And so, for this podcast episode I reached out to some of our past guests to find out what they are grateful for, and I'm sharing it here with you. The work of Anatomy Trains originated with founder Tom Myers, who mapped the human body into 13 myofascial meridians in his original book, currently in its fourth edition and translated into 12 languages. The principles of Anatomy Trains are used by osteopaths, physical therapists, bodyworkers, massage therapists, personal trainers, yoga, Pilates, Gyrotonics, and other body-minded manual therapists and movement professionals. Anatomy Trains inspires these practitioners to work with holistic anatomy in treating system-wide patterns to provide improved client outcomes in terms of structure and function.
