Shelby is a professional horse trainer and equine behavior consultant with over 24 years of experience across multiple disciplines—including Arabian showing, hunter/jumpers, dressage, and even racehorses. She's also taken her education seriously, working toward her Certificate of Equine Science and earning her Equine Behavior Consultant certification through IAABC. Training Piaffe & The Road to Collection: Connection, Communication, & Biomechanics with Kelly de Geus

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 1, 2025 74:43

In this episode of The Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast, I'm joined by the incredible Kelly de Geus: an amazing horsewoman known for her ability to train horses the piaffe in a light, soft, willing, biomechanically correct way. Kelly de Geus is a dedicated horse trainer and coach from the Netherlands, who has been captivated by horses for as long as she can remember. For over a decade, Kelly's main focus has been on training horses herself, developing a specialty in teaching horses to piaffe and passage in hand. This is always a result of optimal communication and body use, and never a quick fix or trick. Having trained over 1000 horses in hand, Kelly now primarily focuses on sharing the knowledge she gained by doing so, thereby helping more people (and, in turn, more horses) feel better, improve posture and optimise performance.   I first reached out to Kelly for online lessons years ago after being mesmerised by how light and happy her horses looked in the piaffe. At the time, she didn't have online resources, but she agreed to help me through online lessons and I was blown away by her approach. She taught me that that piaffe is reflection of correct basics, and that there are a sequence of things that need to be in place before the piaffe is possible. Her values in training horses align closely to my own so I am so happy to share her voice with the horse world.   In this episode, we cover: ✨ The true purpose of piaffe as a diagnostic and gymnastic exercise (it's more than just fancy footwork and it's not a ‘circus trick'!) ✨The importance of conncection, communication, & biomechanics ✨ Common mistakes & how to know if your horse is ready to start training the piaffe ✨ The groundwork that sets the foundation for collection ✨ Adjusting her training approach to different horses  ✨The role of positive reinforcement in her training ✨Plus so much more! If you've ever dreamed of training the piaffe, this is THE episode for you!

If you've ever found yourself questioning what is the most ethical way to train horses, felt like an outsider when it comes to exploring different methods, and/or you're a mum trying to balance horses, life, and kids…then this episode is for you! A while ago, I received a message on Facebook from Chloe Bailey, who had joined the new free Horse Mums FB group. She sent me a Google Doc in response to a question I had posted about how people navigate the use of reinforcements. Her response was so insightful that I knew it had to be shared, so here we are! I sat down with Chloe Bailey, a welfare-concious ‘amateur' horse trainer who has, like many of us, been asking those horse welfare questions and contemplating on how we can best navigate the use of reinforcement types in training.   We spoke about: Chloe's horse journey and how she navigates the use of reinforcements in training What led her to explore positive reinforcement (R+) Overcoming guilt from past training methods and advice for others facing the same struggles Balancing idealism with practicality in training The biggest misconceptions about positive reinforcement (R+) and negative reinforcement (R-) Dealing with a shift in identity after moving away from traditional horse communities Experimenting with longer delays between the click and reward – key insights The future of R+ in the horse world – what changes Chloe hopes to see in the next 5–10 years How becoming a mother has changed her horsemanship The challenges of being a horse mum and human mum – and how she manages them Chloe's latest horsemanship breakthrough Her favourite horse books and resources- including 2 authors that are completely new to me which I'm excited to read Her personal horse goals for the future Plus so much more!

I stumbled across the amazing Connie Colfox on Horse & Country TV watching her use positive reinforcement to help top eventing riders with ‘problem' horse behaviours.   She was able to really impress these riders with how quickly she could change these talented horse's minds about something they were struggling with.    In the words of Connie: “We really want horses to feel comfortable in the world they live in. By giving them a broad grounding with positive reinforcement we build trust to take on the challenges we encounter together”.   I was particularly interested in what she said around the 23-minute mark of this episode, and I agree that what she mentions here is a huge part of horses performing beyond their natural capabilities - and conversely why sometimes performance drops despite better riding!   I found Connie to be extremely humble, despite her decades of horse experience and knowledge, and she shares a balanced view and open approach to horsemanship, forever observing and learning from the horse.    If you have a horse with some ‘problem' behaviours or you are a performance rider curious about how positive reinforcement could help your horse, you will love this episode with Connie! She hopes very much that a great number of riders will be able to experience serious enthusiasm for classical horsemanship in its true and original sense. Anja runs her own farm and equestrian centre called "Gut Rosenhof" in Germany, she teaches numerous clinics and seminars in the United States, England, and all around the world.  Anja's training philosophy is that Dressage is here for the horse and not the horse for the dressage, and she prides herself in adapting to the individual horse's personality, solving any problem in a sensitive, horse-friendly way. Anja focuses on the natural movement of the horse using gymnastic exercises to help horses find balance mentally and physically. She believes that each rider should contribute to their horse living a long, healthy and happy life which can only happen with a correct and holistic approach to horse care and training.   In this episode, we discuss:   Anja Beran's journey to classical dressage Partnership, harmony, personality, balance, body and mind as a basis for training horses Riding with ‘invisible aids' A holistic approach to horse's happiness The issues with nosebands and auxiliary/side reins The origins of dressage and how it has changed over the years The potential future of modern dressage competition What the ultimate contact should feel like from a young horse to advanced Classical dressage as a form of physical therapy for horses How classical dressage has transformed the lives of horses destined for euthanasia Her favourite classical masters & their books What is meant by riding the horse from back to front Anja's mission to have ‘sustainable' horses who are healthy, happy, and motivated into their old age And so much more!   Anja has an important message to share with the world, and I hope that many riders will draw inspiration from how she rides and trains horses, knowing that dressage should be FOR the horse!   ____ Links to Anja Beran's Beautiful books: https://www.anjaberan.de/en/about-us/publications https://www.amazon.com.au/s?k=anja+beran&crid=1REUR30AVU6DM&sprefix=anja+%2Caps%2C421&ref=nb_sb_noss_2   ____ FIND OUT MORE ABOUT ANJA HERE: https://www.anjaberan.de/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100043906910677 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/anjaberan.foundation/   ____ EXTRA RESOURCES TO HELP YOU AND YOUR HORSE:   Discover a deeper connection & communication with your horse with this free mini-course at www.amaliadempsey.com/ccmc   Sign up for weekly Horsemanship Breakthrough emails, where each week I send you a little bite-sized horsemanship breakthrough that has helped me on my journey, in the hope that it will also help you with your horse. "Liberty is something that he feels, rather than what he does” ~Nadine Lindblom   Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast Ep 47: Equine Veterinary Medicine & Liberty as a Mindset with Nadine Lindblom    Nadine has worked closely with horses for the past 16 years. During this time, she has had the opportunity to learn from several fantastic trainers; however, she says the most profound lessons have been from the horses themselves!  In 2020, Nadine graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours). Studying and working as an equine veterinarian has helped Nadine understand horses on an even deeper level!   Nadine preaches that in order to have a horse that is willing and able to engage, connect and use expressive movement, he needs to be healthy and free from pain/discomfort and stress. Nadine believes it is important for horse owners to learn to recognize the subtle signs to be able to help their horse sooner rather than later.    Therefore, Nadines work with horses which she calls the Balanced Art of Liberty also focuses on the pillars of equine health as well as training the eye to notice the small but critical changes in equine movement, posture and behaviour.   In this episode, we discuss: Nadine's horse journey into liberty training and veterinary medicine Her background and experience with traditional riding, trick training, liberty training, natural horsemanship, and the academic art of riding Liberty training where the horse feels they have no choice vs allowing the horse to say no The use of non-escalating pressure and rewards in training How studying/practising as a vet has influenced the way Nadine works with horses Nadine's foundations for liberty training How to have a happy & enthusiastic horse The pros and cons of anthropomorphising All the usual fun Horsemanship Breakthroughs questions! Meg has loved horses all her life, dabbling in pony club as a kid, and progressing to competing in dressage, showjumping, and eventing in her twenties. Meg describes herself at that time as being fearless and that meant she could have a lot of fun. In her thirties, she got married and had babies- and suddenly was not so fearless anymore.  Meg is now in her forties and has learned to be patient, to take things slow, and improve her communication with her horse. She feels at ease with herself knowing she doesn't need to compete to prove she is a capable horseperson.  Meg describes her philosophy with horses as always being kind, slowing down, and listening to your horse. Meg says she also loves the intention of balance as this is not only for her horses, but her family and life in general. Meg loves learning and whilst her life is sometimes crazy chaos she loves the ride.   I came across Meg when she signed up to my Horsemanship Fundamentals Academy, and I began teaching Meg through pivo lessons which has been a lot of fun! In this episode, we talk about Meg's horsemanship journey and how she overcomes the challenges of balancing life and work whilst pursuing her horse goals in a way that is true to her values around training horses. You will love Meg's contagious positive energy and the lessons she shares around her horses Gally, Patch, & Mr Jones.   If you're a mum and rider with goals you will be inspired by Meg's story.     Find out more & connect with Meg on Instagram at @field_of_bays     Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or amaliadempsey.com    ************* Have questions or suggestions for future episodes? Connect with me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/amalia_horses/ Get the free connection & communication mini-course at https://ww.amaliadempsey.com/

Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast Episode 23 An Interview with Bethany Tuskey on classical dressage, liberty, and self-development.   “Keep Moving Forward!”   Bethany's love of horses began at an early age. She now has over 15 years experience working with horses and has been instructing and training for over 10 years. Bethany has dedicated her life to learning the art of horsemanship from master horse trainers. She has studied classical dressage, liberty work, work in hand, and long reining and has recently taken up the challenge of learning vaulting. Bethany has taken what she has learned from other trainers as well the horses, and combined in with her Christian faith to create a unique style of training based on love for the horse, the desire to help her horses to become better versions of themselves, and the desire to build partnerships with her horses based on mutual trust and respect. In addition to dressage work, Bethany is able to take her partnership with her horses to a whole new level by working with them at liberty, where there is nothing connecting her to the horse and the horse has the freedom to do as he wants. Working with horses at liberty creates a relationship with your horse that will transcend anything you have experienced before. Bethany enjoys performing with her Andalusians at various shows and exhibitions. It is her goal to share her unique training style and show people how they too can take their relationship with their horse to a whole new level.

Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast Episode 22 Intrinsic Motivation for Healthy Movement with Kathy Sierra "Nature as an ally instead of adversary”   Kathy Sierra has ten years working in human sports medicine as a training director in Los Angeles. She then went back to school for computer science, working after as a game developer and software architect. Kathy eventually worked in Hollywood and taught “interaction design for intrinsic motivation” at UCLA Entertainment Studies and Universal Studio, and went on to create an educational book series in technology that sold over 2 million copies.   Horses have been a lifelong passion, but not her profession. However, when her beloved horse Draumur was nearly euthanized, Kathy felt it was her fault, so she took everything in her background on motivation, learning psychology, neuroscience, and movement science, and synthesized a path forward to help him when conventional methods failed.    Eventually other people saw them and began to ask for help with their horses, so she created the philosophy and principles of Intrinzen. She lives on a small island near the border of US/Canada with her husband and 6 horses.
