If you’re anything like me when I first started my side hustle, you might have found yourself thinking… “I already have so much to do, how am I gonna find the time to build my business too?” But then I looked at how I was spending my time. Waking up at 7AM and lazily watching Bravo reality TV as I slowly got ready to drag myself into a day job that I hated. Leaving for work at the last minute and trying to come home as early as possible just like everyone else, which had me sitting in rush hour traffic. Binge-watching Netflix after dinner and on lazy weekend days. Scrolling Facebook in my spare moments to see what my old high school friends were up to. Never planning ahead, always reacting to circumstances around me. And I wished my life was different. I wished I made more money, doing something that I actually loved, that I worked from home and had more freedom. I might have felt busy at work… but outside of work I had plenty of opportunities to work on my dream. But I’d let myself get hacked.  And exactly what this week’s guest is here to talk about. How we let our lives get hacked, how we pay for all the “free” things we spend our time on with our attention, and how it’s stealing our dreams from us. Kary Oberbrunner is an author, coach, and speaker who helps individuals and organizations clarify who they are, why they're here, and where they're going so they can share their message with the world.  And he’s here today to show us how to become Unhackable so that we can succeed in business and life. Everything Kary talks about is so impactful and powerful.  If you love this episode, which I know you will, be sure to check out Kary’s brand new book, Unhackable, coming out this Saturday, October 24th! Kary and I talk about: Kary’s journey as a pastor, to side hustler, to author and publisher Kary’s powerful lessons on failure Why you should break down your projects into smaller steps Important questions you should start asking yourself The one belief Kary had to change about himself to get where he is today My favorite quotes from Kary: “I believe we were all meant for a great purpose” “When you get hacked, that means you get distracted, you get diverted” “The fuel to become unhackable is enthusiasm” Bio: Kary Oberbrunner is an author, coach, and speaker who helps individuals and organizations clarify who they are, why they're here, and where they're going so they can become souls on fire, experience unhackability, and share their message with the world. As a child and young adult, Kary overcame a paralyzing speech disorder and an addiction to self-injury. In the past twenty years, he’s ignited over one million people with his content. He lives in Ohio with his wife, Kelly, and three children. However, it was a walk to Kerry Park at 7AM on a Sunday morning that allowed me to finally understand who I was and what I wanted for the next chapter of my life.

It's New Orleans: Happy Hour

Seriously, you have no idea how easy it is to be a best selling author. When you see a book on the best seller list of Amazon, don’t you assume that it must be selling hundreds of thousands? Try 800. Not 800,000, just 800. That’s what both the authors on this Happy Hour tell us. Dr Chris Yandle gets up around 6AM. By around 7AM he’s jotting down a clever line that he’s dreamed up since 6AM. He puts the clever line on a piece of paper and slips it into his daughter’s book bag. (This is not the plot of a novel, btw, this is what actually happens in the Yandle household in Mandeville.) So, anyway, after Dr Chris has a bunch of these notes he writes them up into a book called Lucky Enough, which turns out to be a prophetic title ‘cause he’s lucky enough to sell out of the whole run and be a big deal in the non-fiction world and seriously that’s only about 600 books later. You’d be forgiven for not believing these numbers could possibly be true, but then Fermin Ceballos confirms them. Fermin is also the author of a book called Pisadno Mi Sombra, which you have probably already gathered is in Spanish, and there’s some English in there too. Fermin is also shocked at his successful book sales of around 800 books – and both of our authors are working on their second books! Fermin also happens to be a talented musician, which is his primary job. There’s a parallel world of Latin music in New Orleans and the South in general in which Fermin is a star, and deservedly so. You can also catch him online on the Band Together benefit concert to raise money for Covidly-unemployed musicians. Connie Bellone is not an author or a musician but she does live on the Northshore, in delightful Madisonville. However, most of her work is done on the Southshore, brightening the lives of under-privileged children with her Health & Education Alliance of Louisiana, aka HEAL. Just as an aside, she is not killing wild turkeys over there in Madisonville, though there is apparently no good reason not to. Andrew Duhon and Fermin Ceballos team up as best one can on Zoom on a beautiful Andrew Duhon tune, Promised Land. Photos by Jill Lafleur.

Today's story is about when Shawna's mom refused to wake her up in the morning because of the way Shawna acted. Fast forward to today and Shawna is very energized and excited to speak to groups at 7AM. What changed? Shawna realized that she has a high self that she can step and walk into. Problem and Stress - People have 2 versions of their true authentic self - a high self and a low self. These are not good/bad types of you. But more like motivated and proactive self vs depressed and reactive self. You have the power to operate in the higher self, but it is your choice. Solution and Examples: Focus on what you can control and move towards the things that lead you to "flow" or "put you in the zone". You have to prime the pump to get yourself going. Maybe use pictures, music, walks in nature, cards from loved ones, etc. to get you focused on your purpose in life. Only make decisions when you are in your high self. Be aware of when you are in your low self.

She has been a professional photographer for over 30 years, and photography educator since 2011. Darlene provides valuable articles on her site, has a free ebook, and offers online photography courses, as well as photography travel tours. Her next tours are to Morocco in April and Peru and India in the fall of 2020.As sometimes happens, things didn’t go exactly as planned and, also thanks to a broken foot, Darlene had to wait more than two years before she could come to Venice. She finally did just recently and that was a perfect opportunity to interview her again and ask about her impressions of Venice and the Carnival. We recorded the interview in busy St. Mark’s Square and, even though it was still 7AM, there was a lot going on. It was also quite windy, so the audio quality wasn’t the best, but everything is still perfectly intelligible. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

E5: 5 Simple Practices for Gift Officers

Friday5 with Tammy Zonker

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 4, 2020 6:50

By Tammy Zonker, Fundraising Strategist & Keynote SpeakerAnyone who manages a portfolio of donors can benefit from these practices. In many ways they’re common sense, but I assure you – they are not common practice. And believe me, I’ve learned some of them the hard way! #1 Be knowledgeable about current eventsListen to NPR, CNN, your favorite local news channel. Read your local paper and business publications, as well as national publications. The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today. Digital subscriptions aren’t that expensive and make reading something you can do right from your phone or tablet. Now, there is a fine line between being knowledgeable and being a know-it-all. Remember, you are Switzerland most of the time – meaning, you are neutral. Especially in these turbulent political times. This reading equips you to engage well in conversation and establishes you as an intelligent, well-read and credible person. #2 Know your donorsAsk open-ended questions. Listen to their answers. Notice the little things. Act thoughtfully based on what you learn. What time of day do they prefer to meet? I worked with a high-net worth gentleman who owns an investment firm. He doesn’t like to meet during trading hours. So, when I propose a meeting it’s never between 9:30 & 4 Eastern time weekdays. I’ve worked with an incredible 85-year-old lady who’s a night owl. I know never to call her before 10AM. There’s another gentlemen who’s an Executive VP at a Fortune 500 company. If I want to meet with him, I know it’s 7AM for breakfast at his private club a few blocks from his office. He orders the omelet with a side of blueberries. Notice the small things.  Know their children’s names, their pet’s names, their favorite flower. Not necessarily by asking direct questions, but by observing and listening intently as they talk about their life. It shows your donors that you care. It says I see you. I value you. You are more than a source of contributions. They deserve that respect and care. #3 Keep it cleanKeep your car clean. Keep your office clean. Keep your language clean. Let’s break that down. Keep your car clean. Even if you don’t PLAN to have a donor in your car, spontaneous requests can happen. Once I met with an incredibly generous donor, Marilyn in our office. At the end of the meeting she shared that her husband dropped her off to meet with me, before heading to the Tiger’s game. Could I give her a ride or call her a taxi? Well, of course I drove her the four blocks to the ballpark. Thank goodness my car was clean. How many times has someone asked you for a ride, and you had to quickly unload the passenger seat of materials, fast food wrappers and water bottles? It happens. You’re busy. But you need to keep your car clean for these unexpected occasions. Keep your office clean. How many times does a donor drop by, because they were in the neighborhood? I’ve even had planned donor meetings with a scheduled conference room, but when I arrive another meeting has run over – and we end up meeting in my office. Is your office donor-ready? Or would you be embarrassed by the clutter or confidential information visible on your desk? What’s written on your whiteboard?  Keep your language clean. Seems so obvious, right? But what if your donor routinely uses colorful language? Does that give you permission to fly the f-bomb flag? No, it does not. It will diminish your professionalism and credibility in the eyes of your donor – consciously or unconsciously. It just will. And even if you don’t agree with me – is it worth the risk? PAUSE PAUSE #4 Stay positiveNever let insider politics and cultural frustrations seep into donor conversations. No gossiping. No complaining. Ever. #5 Every donor interaction, every outreach contact needs to be entered into your donor database. Obviously, it serves you and your ability to reference all the details and activities, but it serves your donor. With development staff turning over every 18 to 24 months, it can get annoying for donors to share “one more time” why they love and support your organization. If you really love your donors and your organization, you owe it to them to keep good records. It’s not easy. I struggle sometimes too. But it is important. Those are 5 simple practices for fundraising gift officers. I hope you enjoyed this episode of Friday5. If you did, please comment below and share on social media and be sure to tag me @TammyZonker so others can see your comments. If you liked this Friday5 episode, make a comment below and share it. Radio Muse, le programme radiophonique européen de découvertes musicales ! This is the ninth edition of Radiomuse, again from Radio Študent in Ljubljana, Slovenia. This time we showcase three local artists, the punk rock trio 7AM, the local singer-songwriter tovariš strmoglavljen and the imaginary folk trio Širom. First we feature the slovenian-german do-it-yourself rock band 7AM. On bass and vocals Anabel, on guitar and vocals also Mičo and Davor on drums play loud and relentless rock music. In the last few years they have released some demos, cds, vinyls and tapes, which are all avaliable on their webpage. They do it all themselves but – as Mičo said in the interview featured in this broadcast – not because they want to, but because they must. The second interview and music presentation of the show is dedicated to tovariš strmoglavljen, also a strong DIY artist, siner-songwriter and band member who's worked with many local acts trough the years and in one or another form released at least eleven solo an collaborative albums as tovariš strmoglavljen, most of which are available on his bandcamp page. This time we dedicate our time to play the music from his last collabotative project with his band PSIHEDELAVCI. We also talked with Iztok Koren from the trio Širom. More than a dozen instruments can be found in the repertoire of Iztok Koren, Samo Kutin and Ana Kravanja and at least as many given musical forms that can be perceived as an inspiration behind the character of this ensemble playing imaginary folk music by their own words. Širom has released two albums before and in 2019 they are releasing a new record titled A Universe that Roasts Blossoms for a Horse.

Corporate culture perpetuates the idea that we need to fake it ‘til we make it, pretending to have all the answers and projecting confidence in our abilities—whether we feel it or not. But what if there are advantages to not knowing? What if living rich, creative entrepreneurial lives requires that we let go of what we think we know, step into new territory and expand our mental map of the world? Today, Jeffrey considers the benefit of naïveté in creativity and entrepreneurship with Sequoia Blodgett, former music video director and founder of Commas, a tech platform designed to help founders build sustainable businesses. Sequoia shares her journey from directing music videos to the tech world, explaining what she did to secure VC funding for her first company and how the failure of that venture led to the creation of Commas. She addresses the vast disparity of women of color in tech, discussing the unconscious bias prevalent on both sides of private equity and her mission to even the playing field for multicultural entrepreneurs. Listen in to understand how travel enhances creativity and learn how to navigate your own knowledge gaps in the pursuit of an excellent life. Mr. Malone is in a somewhat bad mood throughout this whole episode. Maybe it was the gardeners blowing leaves at 7AM, the brittle LA weather or the movie Hocus Pocus? In any case, I had a wonderful time with the children, Charlie Marie and JRod! xx
