Well.. some pretty bad shit happened this week. It is the reason that we decided to take a week off from recording. It is also the reason that Bob and Vinny spent a good portion of their Sunday picking out clips from episodes 16-30 for you all to relive and enjoy. Also, Vinny killed most of a bottle of Gentleman Jack while doing his episodes and yeah.... not his best idea. Oh well. Hope you all have had a great week, and have a great week this coming week.New episodes drop every Monday morning at 4AM.The musical artist's heard throughout this weeks episode are thetreeskill, PAWN, Last Gasp, Settle Your Scores, Crafter, Psychic Void, & Narco Debut. Things got real this morning. With all this bacon how could it not. We dove into a bathtub full of 4 types of bacon, 2 types of bread, & 2 styles of egg. We accidentally double booked some killer guests, so we just made sure they both came on.New episodes of Breakfast at Steveny's drop every Monday morning at 4AM!
Kai and George Esbensen, Micro-Ed Software I first heard about the Micro-Ed software company when a member of the Atari community sent me a batch of educational cassette tapes to digitize. The tapes had titles like Maps and Globes, Punctuation, and Spelling Level E. Intriguingly, the tape labels said "Micro-Ed, creators of more than 2,500 programs, pre-school through adult." 2,500 programs? Why had I never heard of this company? I asked 4AM, a software preservationist specializing in the Apple II — and specializing in little-known educational software — if they had heard of the company. The answer was also no. So I started to research. A two-page advertisement in Compute! magazine issue 4, May 1980, provided my first glimpse into the company: "LOOK at all the MICRO-ED programs for the PET!" The titles listed include Agreement of Subject and Verb; Run on Sentences; Higher, Same, Lower; Word Demons; and (oddly) Usage Boners. Many of the software tapes were sold in packs, for instance $84 for a pack of 12 elementary school programs. $49.95 for a grade's worth of spelling lessons on 7 tapes. An item in the Washington Apple Pi journal, four years later, January 1984, intrigued me: "$10,000 EDUCATIONAL SOFTWARE GIVEAWAY. Micro-Ed Incorporated has announced its willingness to donate up to $10,000 worth of software to any school district, Special Education cooperative, or parent group willing to establish a school-to-home lending library. No limit has been established on the number of grants Micro-Ed will make. The donation is not contingent upon the purchase of any Micro-Ed products. ... Thorward Esbensen, Micro-Ed's president, 'envisions the establishment of a free lending library of educational software for families.'" Less than a year later, in November 1984, the Commodore magazine The Transactor (v5n3) wrote that Micro-Ed had donated "more than a half million dollars worth of its instructional programs to school systems" for those free software lending libraries. So. Micro-Ed was established in 1979 by Thorward (Tory) Esbensen. Based in Eden Prairie, MN, the company specialized in low-cost educational software. The software, written in the BASIC programming language, was available for Commodore PET, VIC-20, and Commodore 64, Atari 8-bit, Apple II, TRS-80, and Texas Instruments computers. Micro-Ed's best-known title was perhaps "Trail West," an Oregon Trail-like game. Mr. Esbensen died in 2012. I interviewed two of his sons, both of whom worked with their father at Micro-Ed. First, I talked with Kai Esbensen, the youngest in the family. Kai told me in email: "My siblings had all moved out by the time Micro-Ed was in motion, but I lived it. Helping out with Micro-Ed was my first paid job, in 2nd/3rd grade, and I was still on the payroll helping out through age 22." This interview took place on May 28, 2020. ... Next, I talked with Kai's older brother, George Esbensen, who was a salesman for Micro-Ed, and later was president of Cycle Software Services, a software duplication company that spun off from Micro-Ed. This interview took place on June 3, 2020. Let's walk it all through. Jason Scott, recently voted “Least Likely to Be 4AM” but also voted “Most Likely to Work at the Internet Archive” presents historical work of 4AM, introduces the audience unaware of the scope of 4AM's work to what has gone on over the past few years, and hopes to bring the hundreds of new visitors to Virtual Kansasfest just what they have been missing.

Welcome to the Hustle System Podcast! -Where Art Meets Commerce- Today, it is my absolute pleasure to interview Brandon Carter (@kingketo) Brandon is from South Side Chicago, where life wasn't always that easy and he is the definition of a rags to riches story, which is something he is describing in detail during our talk. Like i mentioned above, life wasn't easy for Brandon, and the environment he grew up in, almost pushed him onto a path of life which most probably wouldn't have ended well for him. He realized that and what sparked the change for him were a few unforeseen events which involved close friends, and the main catalyst was the suicide of his father. Witnessing these events made him turn his life to 180*, and he decided to push all of his focus into training people at the gym, which was something he was doing before as well. During this time he held 3 jobs, became a voracious reader and started waking up at 4AM everyday, and started focusing more and more on idea of taking his personal training to an online platform. In this aspect he was a pioneer, as he is probably one of the first trainers to take his business online and create the impact he desired. All of this didn't come without trials and tribulations, as he mentions in the podcast, but eventually he figured how to make it work, and reach and help people and also earn accordingly. As the visionary that he is, he decided to help other trainers by showing them how to move their business in the online space as well and to maximize the impact they could have doing it this way. He created the unique HIGH TICKET TRAINER coaching platform for trainers to discover how to find their niche in fitness and separate themselves from the competition. Good Wednesday Morning from the WGBH Morning Edition team. The midway point of the week has arrived and Joe Mathieu is about to start a ‘Fireworks Patrol’ for his Boston-area neighborhood, the fireworks flew even as late as 4AM on his drive in to the station. Despite the rainy April and May, our area is already looking at a possible drought and which could mean water restrictions this soon in the season. And some promising coronavirus news coming out of a Boston University study that may have implications on stocks later this morning. Thanks as always for waking up with WGBH Radio.

Today's episode is not a regular episode, and I am not a regular Vera today either. I was so angry recording this episode. When I was listening back to it, I felt bad for the Vera who recorded it. I was angry that some Africans still don't know that they're Black in America, but I was angrier at the situation that calls for Africans to be reminded that they're Black too. Some days ago, I did not go to bed till about 4AM because I was watching the news, watching buildings burn, and watching my people mourn. By the time I went to bed, you could cut my emotional tensity with a knife. I felt like I was carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders, and no one's shoulders were made to carry the world's weight. As if Coronavirus isn't bad enough, we also have to deal with the fact that African Americans are disproportionately dying from this disease, and just when the lid is about to pop off, we also have to deal with Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor and Amy Cooper --- and now, George Floyd.I'm angry. And while I'm trying to maintain some sanity, I have to deal with Africans. Even the ones who have not crossed their villages in Africa have an opinion on African Americans.Yes, I'm angry.BEFORE YOU GO, PLEASE RATE AND LEAVE A WRITTEN REVIEW ON APPLE PODCASTS. Production and Sound Design by Kevin Seaman 4 A.M.by Kenneth FearingIt is early evening, still, in Honolulu, and in London, now, itmust be well past dawn; But here, in the Riviera Cafe, on a street that has been lost andforgotten very long ago, as the clock moves steadily towardclosing time,The spark of life is very low, if it burns at all. And here we are, four lost and forgotten customers in this placethat surely will never again be found,Sitting, at ten-foot intervals, along this lost and forgotten bar,(Wishing the space were further still, for we are still too closefor comfort)Knowing that the bartender, and the elk’s head, and the portraitof F.D.R.,(All gazing at something of interest beyond us and behind us,but very far away)Must somehow be aware of us, too, as we stare at the coldinterior of our lives, reflected in the mirror beneath and inback of them. Hear how lonely the radio is, as its voice talks on, and on, un-answered;Notice how futile is the nickel dropped in the juke-box by acustomer,How its music proves again that one’s life is either too humdrumor too exciting, too empty or too full, too this, too that;Only the cat that has been sleeping in the window, now yawningand stretching and trotting to the kitchen to sleep again --Only this living toy knows what we feel, knows what we are, really knows what we only think we know. Soon, too soon, it will be closing time, and the door will be locked; Each of us will be alone, soon, with something ravaging fora name --(Our golden, glorious futures, perhaps).Lock the door now and put out the lights, before some terriblestranger enters and gives, to each of us, an answer that isthe final truth. They say the Matterhorn at dawn, and the Northern Lights ofthe Arctic, are things that should be seen; They say, they say --------- in time, you will hear them say anything, and everything. What would the elk’s head, or the remote bartender say, if theycould speak? The booth where last night’s love affair began, the spot wherelast year’s homicide occurred, are empty now, and still.

It’s been a minute since we brought you the kind of good old-fashioned spooks that CotV is usually all about, and what better topic to set the tone for scary than the unsettling Navajo legend of the Skinwalker. We discuss the lore behind these peculiar beings, before reading some stories by those misfortunate enough to have possibly encountered them in person. So lock your doors, shut your curtains, and stay off desert roads between 2 and 4AM - things are about to get creepy.

I hope you’re both staying safe and healthy :) I’m so grateful for all of the Book Riot podcasts for maintaining a sense of normalcy in my current routine. With that said, I’m looking for a recommendation to keep me completely engrossed. The past two weeks have left me stressed and anxious, so a book to distract my thoughts would be amazing. I haven’t had one of those “stay up reading a book until 4AM” nights in YEARS. I really want something to grip my attention from the beginning to the very end. I would prefer something that isn’t super high fantasy, but other than that, I’ll read just about anything! I’m looking forward to your recs! :) -Haley 2. Hi ladies! I hope you two are doing well. My request seems sort of silly and easy, but I trust both of your opinions so much, and wanted to hear what you had to recommend. When I was younger I used to read Literature with a capital L. A lot of classics, and literary fiction, but during college as a double major in Classics and English, I stopped reading literary fiction because I had to read a lot of it for class, and therefore started gravitating more towards fantasy, and sci-fi, and a bit of romance too. Now that my time in college is coming to an end (and I'm stuck at home taking classes remotely because of Covid-19), I want to try my hand at getting back into literary fiction. In the past I've loved A Little Life, The Secret History, The Goldfinch, and The Mothers, to name a few. Books I've read recently and loved were Red White and Royal Blue, everything China Mieville has ever written, The Broken Earth Trilogy, The Daughter of the Forest, Among Others, and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell. I feel like I've been so apart from literary fiction for so long I'm not actually sure what stories in the genre I would be interested in anymore. Any suggestions you two could give would be much appreciated. Sorry for the overly long ask, but I thought specificity would be useful. -Mariposa 3. Hi! Due to the recent quarantines I've had to cancel a couple of my upcoming trips and I'm pretty bummed about it. I was hoping you could recommend some travel-ish books that will make me feel wanderlust even when I'm self quarantining. You guys are awesome, I can't wait to see what you recommend! -Kait 4. TIME SENSITIVE***Hi! I am starting a new book club, and we are wanting to read a historical queer book as our first read ("historical" really means from whenever :) ) Do you have any suggestions? (I already am aware of Tipping the Velvet, The Color Purple, Stone Butch Blues, Fingersmith, Giovanni's Room, A Little Life) Thanks so much in advance. -Monica 5. Hi ladies! Love the podcast, it’s a bright spot of my week. Recently my college shut down for the remainder of the semester due to corona fear, leaving me to take online classes at my parents house, states away from all my friends during my final semester my senior year (looks like we won’t even have a grad ceremony). Needless to say this left me pretty bummed and I don’t have a great relationship with my parents, so being here isn't exactly great for my mental health. Do you guys have any fun books to recommend? I particularly like sci-fi and fantasy (high, urban, etc.). It doesn't necessarily have to be funny, or lighthearted, I more want a book that will engross me and make me not think about my life for a little bit, if that makes any sense. One caveat no romance please. I left for spring break having just started seeing someone and now with school canceled we are states apart and I don’t know if/when we’ll see each other again, so that relationship is basically done. So now the thought of romance makes me really sad. Thank you both in advance! -Anonymous 6. Hi ladies! I am going to Italy late April/early May and was hoping for some book recommendations to get me even more pumped for my trip. We are staying in Rome and the Amalfi Coast. I am open to any suggestions, whether it be fiction (any genre or YA ok too) that take place in these areas or some non-fiction to learn about the history, art, culture, food, etc. Love your show and thanks in advance! :) -Erika 7. Looking for a fantasy novel that feels like Lord of the Rings but has some non heteronormative romance in it. I love fluff romance and don't mind sex scenes as long as there isn't an "eggplant" involved. I haven't read a good fantasy novel since I was a kid and I liked Eragon, Harry Potter, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Cirque Du Freak. I want something that isn't necessarily YA though as I prefer books geared more towards adults. -Jean (they/them) Books Discussed My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell (tw: sexual abuse of children) Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (tw: harm to children) Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo Disoriental by Négar Djavadi, translated by Tina Kover How to Be a Family by Dan Kois A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid The Confessions of Frannie Langton by Sara Collins (tw: slavery and associated violence) Orlando by Virginia Woolf A Winter’s Promise by Christelle Dabos, trans by Hildegard Serle Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Tasting 67 will go down as one of our favorites yet. This highly regarded, yet vastly underappreciated brewery is located in Seattle, and is simply known as Fremont Brewing Company. We were joined by our buddy Nick Abeyta and a new guest and friend, Jonathan, to enjoy these delicious offerings. We drank some high ABV beers so the night quickly got out of hand, but we had a great time as usual. Thanks for listening and Till the Last Drop! Beer Line-up: Barrel Aged B-Bomb Coconut Edition (Imperial Winter Ale), Barrel Aged Dark Star Coffee Edition (Oatmeal Stout), Unicorn Tears collab between Perennial Artisan Ales (Imperial Stout Aged in Whiskey Barrels with Tart Michigan Cherries), Barrel Aged B-Bomb Coffee Cinnamon (Imperial Winter Ale), Barrel Aged Dark Star Chocolate Vanilla Maple Syrup (Oatmeal Stout) and Barrel Aged Brew 3000 (Barleywine), from Fremont Brewing Company. Spotlight: Funky Blender Preserves Raspberry + Peach by Casey Brewing and Blending. Break Music was 4AM by KaizanBlu Intro and Exit Music provided by bensound.com

Waking up at 4AM for the Monsters In The Morning Show can be tough. That alarm goes off and all you want to do is go back to bed. I have good mornings and some bad ones. But I have found 5 things to NEVER do in the morning because they are sure to send your mornings into the dumper with the quickness. I try and avoid them every morning and when I do my mornings tend to kick ass. If you are even able to do a couple a day it will really help to jump start your day and get you towards your goal of having a fun and productive day.

Why Listen: If you listened to my conversation with Stacy Bare or my recent conversation with Dan Cnossen - if you liked the flavor of those conversations, you’ll love this episode. I shut up as much as possible during my time with Micah - he is a force to be reckoned with. He had a thriving career until 9/11, where he was in New York when the towers fell. He ran into the towers, dragging out whoever he could, and swore in that moment to kill whoever was responsible. He wanted to be an Army Ranger, he ran into a Navy recruiter on the way to enlist, and signed up to become a Navy SEAL instead. After ten years as a Navy SEAL and 4 years as Paramilitary, he moved to Montanta. Wackinenss ensued. It led him to start a non-profit called Heroes & Horses. I’m betting money that you will donate to this organization before the episode is over. It’s incredible. In the show notes we have a link to Micah’s TedX talk - in it, Micah talks about how important struggle is. This is something he learned in his 1,110 days - 13 deployments - in which he was deployed to combat zones, but even more so when he returned. We talk about Micah’s struggles, and how we’re doing that to the Veteran community by often coddling them - doing the work for them - prescribing them medications, trying to keep them from the very pain that will heal them. And so, Micah and his team take a different approach. They take 30+ Veterans into the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights where they face austerity and challenge. They have water, coffee, meat and veggies… not a whole lot else. They ride 400-500 miles on horses. They learn to shoe horses. They take philosophy courses. They wake up at 4AM to workout, and work all day until 10PM. They provide tools so that each individual can mine who they are. About Micah Micah Fink is the CEO of Heroes and Horses, where for the last five years he has offered combat veterans an alternative solution for defining and approaching their physical and mental scars – a solution that does not include the overprescribing of medication, or traditional psychotherapy, but rather the opportunity aand tools to redefine their purpose, rediscover their inner-strength, engage in a practice of self-responsibility, and maximize their potential. He started out in the Navy, where he served for ten years as a Navy SEAL and four years in paramilitary service. Since then he has also worked as a professional speaker for Free Matter, as well as the Executive Producer of the film, 500 Miles.
