What is as hypnotising as a beautiful goldfish circling its bowl, but can help you understand the way a virus can spread? The answer is one of the beautiful interactive simulations produced by VisualPDE ! In this podcast we talk to Benjamin Walker from University College London, and to Adam Townsend and Andrew Krause from Durham University, who together created this online solver of partial differential equations. Such equations describe how quantities change over space and time and therefore used throughout science to describe processes that play out in the real world — from the transmission of airborne viruses to the flow of water during a flood. Ben, Andrew and Adam tell us about their motivation for building VisualPDE and what they can do with it. We met Ben, Andrew and Adam through the Mathsci-comm network for people who communicate maths and data science to non-expert audiences. As you can see by playing with the simulation below, VisualPDE is a great tool for communicating maths research to non-experts, as well as allowing mathematicians to quickly simulate what their mathematical models can tell them. Adam is also part of the team behind the brilliant Chalkdust, a magazine for the mathematically curious. Why not order the latest issue for a Christmas gift? Play with the simulation! Suppose that lots of people are sitting in a sealed room and one of them is infectious. We'll assume that the infectious person is constantly producing virus-laden particles that spread out around them and lose their potency over time. The simulation below shows what this might look like. The colour corresponds to the concentration or amount of the virus in the air. With VisualPDE, we're not just limited to watching a simulation: we can interact with it too. Clicking in the room will introduce some viral particles to the air, as if someone with an infection had coughed (coughing is actually a lot more complicated and is the focus of lots of research). Try clicking to see what difference a cough can make. Though each cough introduces some virus to the room, it looks like it quickly decays away until we can't even tell it was there. So, does this mean we shouldn't be worried about a cough? To explore this further, let's look at the probability (or chance) of getting an infection, which is related but not equal to the virus concentration. Specifically, we'll look at the chance of catching the virus assuming that you'd been in the same location for the duration of the simulation. With VisualPDE, we can do this by switching to the Probability View by pressing and choosing "Probability". Now for the goldfish. People don't always stay still in the middle of rooms. Unsurprisingly, the movement of an infected individual can have a big impact on the spread of a virus. The next simulation is set up so that the source of the infection moves around the room, as if they were a waiter going between tables in a restaurant, perhaps. The air conditioner is turned off, so that the air in the room is still. The Probability View shows the build-up of a ring of likely infections as the infectious person circles the room. A quick look at the Concentration View shows their circular path, leaving a trail of viral particles behind them. To find out more about this simulation and how to explore it, go to the VisualPDE site. For years, she have been told, ‘stop dreaming, get back to earth and learn how to become successful with a 9-5 career.' she would listen to these pieces of advice whilst continuing to write songs when everyone else slept. As the years went by, the voice in my head said my purpose in life is connected to music. It told me not to give up, however my fear and insecurities held me back until the 2020 pandemic. It was this time that made me realise how priceless time really is. During lockdown, Ewelina went for long walk along the coast line as she was walking, she came across a stone in the shape of a heart. She believes this was a sign from God to carry on with what I love doing - music. She began working harder and harder more that ever before so I could improve. She has learned to believe in herself, no matter what others said. Ewelina has learned to love herself and embrace her progress, her voice is no unique. I hope you enjoy our time together. There's no mistaking Austin band the Ransom Brothers' major musical influence; those slide and twinned guitar riffs, fierce fiddle solos and bluesy, soul-infused melodies pay proud homage to the Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band and other '70s Southern rockers, though the band also pledges allegiance to red dirt, outlaw and outlier country, jam bands. But it's definitely their own musical chops and songwriting skills on display in each track of their debut album, Resurgence.“Our goal has always been to be ourselves and write and play what inspires us,” says lead singer and guitarist Sean McHargue, who formed the band with fellow Texas State University graduate Daniel “Sal” Solis (guitars, mandolin). They were a duo when they came up with the name, inspired by Jimmy Stewart's character in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, but have since added bassist Phil Eckhardt, drummer Aaron English, fiddler John Thomas and keyboardist James Rodman.“We all have our own styles and nobody tells anyone what to do; we just throw shit in the wok and see if it comes out crispy. It usually does,” says Solis. But the blend of past and present on Resurgence is intended to serve as more than the band's calling card: They also hope to reinvigorate some musical corners that have gone little stale.www.TheRansomBrothers.comwww.thetroutshow.comThanks for listening for more information or to listen to other podcasts or watch YouTube videos click on this link >https://thetroutshow.com/

Members Aaron and Liz English Shares Land Academy Success Stories (LA 991) Transcript: Steven Butala: Steve and Jill here! Jill DeWit: Hello! Steven Butala: Welcome to the Land Academy Show, entertaining land investment talk. I'm Steven Jack Butala. Jill DeWit: And, I'm Jill DeWit broadcasting from the sunny Southern California. Steven Butala: Today, Jill and I talk with members: Aaron and Liz English. And, we talk about their land success, Land Academy success stories, or maybe some of where they haven't had so much success. Steven Butala: So, just to start it off, and before we get into the real topic, let us know please how you got here? How you got to this moment with Land Academy? Aaron English: Well, I got into the land business about ten years ago, and did the whole Jack Bosch thing, and said, "Go to the county, get a mailer or get the data." And, I'm like, "Okay." And then you get the data, and it's like, "What? What is this?" You know... I was like, "Okay, I can't do this." So, I end up buying a list from China, sent a mailer out and just got a bunch of hate back, so I backed it for like ten years. And then, just about two years ago, I found you guys and went out specifically looking for land investors and land investing, came across your podcast and pulled the trigger. And so, here we are. Jill DeWit: Awesome! Aaron English: How long ago did you join? Liz English: Two years. Steven Butala: Two years ago? Liz English: Yeah, yeah. Aaron English: Yeah. Steven Butala: Has it worked out? I mean, are you doing deals? Liz English: Yeah. Aaron English: Yeah. We're doing lots of deals. I think we're about 150-160, something like that. Steven Butala: Wow! What's a typical deal for you guys? That's great! Aaron English: As far as money goes, or...? Steven Butala: Yeah, like buy it for 5000, 10 acres in, I don't know, some Western State. Sell it for 22, in terms or cash, or what's a typical deal? Liz English: We did a lot of terms before, and we don't want to do anymore because it's a pain in the butt. Talk to a lot of interesting people that are time wasters. But now, we're doing more, bigger deals and selling them cash because we kind of graduated out of- Aaron English: All cash, for sure. We stopped doing notes about last month. Just chasing too many people, and too many people with sob stories and they're like, "We got to take this property back now." You know, it's just a pain. Just cash. Jill DeWit: It sounds good. I mean, a lot of people are... if you have the, I don't want to say stomach for it or what the right word is, but if that's your thing, yeah, you can quickly get how many... you know, coming in a month. But, you have to babysit them a little bit, as you know. There's always one that needs something, and somebody's not available. And, even though with us, I'm like I would say, "What do you need? Do you want me to..." It's like, "I get paid on the third, could I make the payments come out on the fifth?", "Fine." And, they're still always a little something, and I'm like, "This is just a lot of work." And then, of course, then they go dark, and you're like, "Darn it!" You know, I don't want to take it back. I like the payment thing and they're gone. I kind of feel bad for you, but now I got to do it all over again. So, I get it. Yeah. Liz English: We've had some people that are being great all along, but it's just those few people that want to change it up, their credit card every month, or miss a payment,

"It's hard to appreciate the Earth when you're down right upon it because it's so huge. It gives you in an instant, just at a position 240,000 miles away from it, (an idea of) how insignificant we are, how fragile we are, and how fortunate we are to have a body that will allow us to enjoy the sky and the trees and the water ... It's something that many people take for granted when they're born and they grow up within the environment. But they don't realize what they have. And I didn't till I left it.'' -- Jim Lovell, Apollo 8 and 13. Greeting Fellow Runners… The average distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,403 km, that’s 238,857 miles. To put that into perspective, it’s exactly 2,462 miles or 3,961 km between New York and Los Angeles…so the moon is 156 times the distance away from the Earth as New York is to LA. When the Apollo Astronauts went to the moon, they noticed a few things which probably should have been obvious and expected. First, the moon is dead; Buzz Aldrin stepped out of the lunar lander, looked around and gasped “Magnificent desolation”. He witnessed first hand that the moon is beautiful, but void of life. The second thing the astronauts noticed when they looked back at the earth was that it was the only thing in the sky that had any color. It shone of deep blues, white wisps, dark greens and browns. The Earth was, in fact, a magnificent oasis of life. The third thing the astronauts realized when they stood on the surface of the moon was that, if they lifted up their arm and stuck out their hand, holding it out to towards the little blue bubble that was hanging in the lunar sky, they could cover the entire Earth with their thumb. Everyone who has ever lived was hidden behind that thumb. The entire history of the human civilization was hidden behind that thumb, every creature that had ever swam, crawled, slithered , hopped, walked, or flew had lived (or were living) their whole lives, hidden behind that thumb. Wally Schirra, the astronaut who flew around the earth on Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions once said “I left Earth three times. I found no place else to go.” Think about the profoundness of that statement. He found no place else to go because there IS no place else to go. Seen from space, this little blue bubble we run upon is our home and is very likely to be the only place in the entire Universe that we will ever be able to live. I know that we’re talking about going to Mars and we can imagine a future where we terraform planets or create starships to take our descendents to extra-solar planets over the course of a millennium; but this one planet that we live upon is a precious bubble of life in space. It’s our home, it’s small, and we have to take care of it. But today, I’m going to suggest that before we can take care of this little blue bubble that we first take care of each other. Perspective might be the key to that. I’m a science fiction fan. I love “Star Trek” and “Star Wars” and anything to do with space travels and alien encounters. I’ve often wondered what alien visitors to Earth would think as their spaceship got close and they saw this little blue bubble of life. Wouldn’t they assume that all of the intelligent creatures of the indigenous civilizations on this planet lived in peace and harmony as a single tribe of the human species? Wouldn’t they believe that conflicts would be rare on such a tiny world where global cooperation was the only logically sensible way for such creatures to co-exist. Wouldn’t they expect that such creatures, born of the same species, evolved from the same ancestral lineage, and with essentially similar physical features…would live, love, share and care for each other throughout their short lives? On this podcast, I’ve tried to make the point that if we’re going to live up to those expectations (and as the so called intelligent self aware species on this planet, I think we should probably make peace, love and understanding a common goal) and if that’s a noble and good goal, then it has to start somewhere. Where’s it going to start? With religion? Maybe…but religious differences hasn’t been particularly effective with the whole “ensuring world peace thing” over the last thousand years. I’m saying that as a devote practicing Roman Catholic…religion without the underlying foundation of tolerance, understanding, acceptance, charity and love for all of the people on this little blue bubble, no matter how they worship or what they believe…isn’t helpful to a world in desperate need of peace. Will the goal of such peace start with governments? Ummm…I’m not very good with understanding the whole socio-political strategy of the modern world, but I’m pretty sure there are a few wars going on that started because “So and So said that So and So had weapons and the other guy called So and So part of the axis of evil…and…ahhh…my head it going to explode!! No: world peace and the idea of a planet of creatures living together in harmony is not going to start with any of the traditional avenues of diplomacy, it has to start WITH US. You are a runner. You are now running in a global event with friends from all over the world. We all have our differences, we all carry our baggage of fear and shame, anger and frustration with us…but that’s okay: that’s part of being human. The one thing I can say that we have going for us, as runners, is that we do not hate. Today we’re not individuals from other countries and cultures: today we are all runners: fellow runners. It doesn’t matter what you look like, how you dress, or what you do in your spare time. Right now, this moment, you are out sharing an experience with other human beings who are feeling the same heart pounding exertion that you are feeling. And it’s a good feeling, tiring, yes…but think about it: we are living our lives to the top as the good animals we were always meant to be…out here, we can imagine a world full of friends who believe in the ideals of love, joy and peace…out here we can afford to be a little idealistic and possibly naive…because we’re running a race that transcends borders, cultures and rules that have been set in place to keep us apart. You are a runner; and when you live your life as part of a community where you have friends all over the world, as you do, you begin to appreciate each other more, you begin to see the world from each others eyes and perspectives. If each of us, running across the Earth could imagine the view of our planet from the surface of the moon, or Mars or from the very edge of our solar system and beyond, we’d have to appreciate how precious this little blue bubble really is…and more importantly, how precious we are to each other. You and I are fellow runners…and we set positive examples for every human being that lives on this little blue bubble in space…and when it comes to having a world full of healthy, happy, peaceful, kind, generous and thoughtful creatures…it all starts with us.
