COLUMBUS, Ohio (BP) – It happens with a couch or mattress. It happens with two chairs facing each other across a table. While refugees' initial days and months in America can be complex and filled with paperwork and immigration meetings, churches have learned there are direct, simple ways to meet needs. Not long after it began six years ago, Living Hope Church in Columbus was helping deliver donated furniture on behalf of a group of non-profit organizations. It became apparent that the items were going toward a growing migrant population consisting of those from the Middle East and Central America. The white, middle-class community that Aaron Taylor, Living Hope's pastor, had grown up in was rapidly changing. Members of Living Hope Church in Columbus, Ohio, load items for its ministry center / Photo by Aaron Taylor “There are pockets of these communities around with people moving in from all over the world, and it opened our eyes,” he said. The need grew, and soon the church took it on as its own. It began with a question to their non-profit partners: What would they like to see available to the refugee population? The answer was a furniture store. “About five months after that, we opened a ministry center next to our church that now serves 12-20 families a month on average,” Taylor said. “It stays stocked through approximately 12 non- or for-profit groups, so it doesn't cost the church.” Sometimes new mattresses arrive by way of a nonprofit donation. Coffeemakers and toasters get to the shelves through Walmart overstock. Recliners and other furniture items with small scratches or dents that prevent them from making the showroom floor are more than suitable for clients of the Living Hope ministry center. “When we step in, in many cases we're able to provide the large items for, say, a two-bedroom apartment,” Taylor said. “It changes the game for families.” One essential need has brought major benefits to children trying to acclimate to American schools. “We've provided children with beds and have heard back from school counselors that the child came to their school and had low grades and was always tired. They would have a lot of emotions to process still,” Taylor said. “They'll get a bed of their own and six or eight weeks later the counselors will say it isn't the same kid. Their entire demeanor has shifted.” Further east, about 20 members of Pillar Church in Dumfries, Va., help with the English as a Second Language classes that benefit primarily those who have fled Afghanistan since the Taliban retook the country in 2021. Pastor Colby Garman said the benefits go both ways. “The conversations with our people have brought another level of understanding [for the situation],” he said. “It puts a face on what is a challenging problem and what it's like to build a new life in America.” His wife Annie taught ESL for years in public schools and brought those concepts to the English immersion classes. The people his church serves are not believers, but the time together has led to discussions about faith. “Many of them had family members who were killed and they're trying to figure out what's next. It has become an open door for the Gospel,” said Garman, whose church lies just south of Washington, D.C., and is located near Marine Corps Base Quantico, where more than 3,700 Afghan refugees were received and cared for when the Taliban took over. In Columbus, Taylor has seen similar benefits to his church stepping forward to help. “It's been good for us,” he said. “I remember [former SBC president] J.D. Greear asking years ago that if our church closed its doors, would the community know we were gone? This has been a good way for us to establish a presence for our church that is meeting a tangible need. “It has also led us to become a multilingual, multiethnic church. We have people from seven nations. Our worship services are two languages.

Texas jurors convicted 39-year-old Raymond Antonio Rivera of murdering his girlfriend by throwing her off the balcony of her apartment in Killeen, Texas. The incident, which occurred on June 25, 2020, at the Henderson Garden Apartments, resulted in the death of 50-year-old Nilsa Maria Arce. The tragic events unfolded in broad daylight, witnessed by horrified onlookers. Witnesses testified that an argument between Rivera and Arce escalated before Rivera hurled the victim off the balcony. What proved fatal, however, was Rivera's subsequent act of throwing an orange recliner, weighing as much as 50 pounds, onto Arce's body below. The impact led to a broken neck and numerous other severe injuries, ultimately resulting in Arce's death in the following days. During the trial, witnesses recounted the horrifying scene, with one witness, Roxanne Rodriguez, describing how Arce was breathing heavily before the fatal blow. Rodriguez testified that she saw Rivera throw the recliner onto Arce's face, after which all sounds ceased. Rivera continued to throw objects off the balcony, creating a pile atop the victim. “I heard a woman and a man arguing and then I heard, ‘Aaah!' and I heard Miss Nilsa hit the ground,” she testified, “I looked at my partner and I said, ‘Did he just throw her over the balcony?'” She ran to get help at an auto body shop across the street. “By the time we got back, so much stuff had been thrown that it looked like a pile of trash on top of her,” Rodriguez said, during her testimony on Tuesday morning. She said that only the victim's feet could be discerned from the pile of furniture and other household items. Another witness, U.S. Army veteran Aden Puente Santiago, testified to removing the recliner from Arce's body in an attempt to administer first aid. However, Arce remained unresponsive, prompting Santiago to call for emergency assistance. Rivera attempted to flee the scene after the murder, but eyewitnesses intervened, leading to his apprehension by the Killeen Police Department. Witnesses recounted pursuing Rivera for blocks until authorities arrived to detain him. The conviction carries significant repercussions for Rivera, who faces a potential century-long sentence for the murder of Arce. His sentencing is scheduled for May 30, marking the culmination of a lengthy legal process that began with questions about Rivera's competency to stand trial. This weeks Thoughts Off The Stem are infused with Nugz Pheno Hunter Pixie Stikz a 27% THC Sativa. For the Prer-Roll I'm smoking the Recliner, Movie Night hash infused blunt, a 29% THC hybrid. These were supposed to help me focus. They did not. They basically turned me into one giant brain fart for the show.Since I was all on my high horse about road rage last Sesh. It got me thinking about all the times us dudes get all agro and like to profess our our ability to kick butt and fight man hunting animals. That's right some times our bravado has us thinking we are the baddest people on the planet. This got me thinking about the time I was told about one individuals confidence in their capabilities to fight a wolf with his bare hands. That's right they thought they could take a wolf. They barely went outside yet killing a wold was easier than making Kraft Dinner in their mind.Let's just set the record straight. You're not killing a wolf with your bare hands. However the topic of this podcast is a list of people who did manage to fight off animals that tried to kill them.Yup my obsession with life continues. These people are definitely tougher than me. I'm pretty sure they are tougher than you and you won't believe the stuff they did to escape the jaws of some of the most ferocious animals on the planet. We've got a guy who bit a python, a woman who fought off a tiger with garden tools, a woman who saved her husband from a mountain lion with a ball point pen, a taxidermist who stangled a cougar and guy who beat up a tiger with his bike. There's a few more on the list but you get the point. We can't be to sure about how tough we really are until we meet that kind of adversity.Since we are discussing a train wreck mindset and reading stories of insanely tough individuals. I thought it would be fitting to tell you a little bit about how this seshisode came to be. It was full of adversity and problems. Took me 5 attempts to record and a mess of a show to sift through to find the better points I made. So hopefully my mistakes and the issues I encountered in creating this sesh give you a little something relatable. I know it's not on the level of being half way down a sharks throat and stabbing your way out, but it's adversity none the less. I hope I made something out of nothing on this one and that you ultimately enjoy the sesh!Don't forget to like the podcast, subscribe to the channel and check out Tots420.com
